The new album from the ever-evolving Southern-soul giants, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, signifies both a reinvention and a reunion, stretching out with the confident experimental spirit of The Alien Coast and (2022) and Angels in Science Fiction (2023), but with a warmer, accessible and fun sound that recalls the exuberance and buoyancy of their breakout debut, Half the City (2014). "The self-titled album is what the band is now." Paul says, "I think the band in general feels reignited. I’ve had this conversation with bassist and co-founder Jesse Phillips, who said, 'I don’t know where we can take this. But we have the opportunity to make any kind of record we want. Before, the band thought, 'How far can we take it?'" Now? "It’s 'What is the band great at? What lessons have we learned?’" 

Co-written and produced by the decorated Eg White, St. Paul & the Broken Bones was recorded at the historic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals by the octet, Janeway, bassist and co-founder Jesse Phillips, guitarist Browan Lollar, drummer Kevin Leon, keyboardist Al Gamble, trumpeter Allen Branstetter, saxophonist Amari Ansari, and trombonist Chad Fisher. Together they wound up with their most cohesive record in several years. Janeway’s lyrical perspective also gives the project a particular focus, and he had plenty to draw from this time out. He was a proud new father, having eased some of the parental anxieties that crept up on Angels in Science Fiction, but he also felt the weight of career confusion. With St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Janeway felt like they’d taken their sonic searching as far it could go—or at least "without doing some kind of death-metal album." But it raised a lot of important questions: "'What are we doing? What is the band now?’ You go through that kind of identity-crisis stuff. What is the band, and is this still creatively satisfying?"

The answer is clear.

"Making this record was a long journey, but I think it’s one of those rare times where it felt really worth it," Janeway says. "It feels very much like a renewed energy. And who knows? We might make our death metal record next."

All who preorder the album for local, store pickup will receive a wristband with their preorder for our 10/10 event with the band. Preorders are limited to total of FOUR TOTAL per customer / household. For each album preordered, you’ll receive a wristband such that two LPs preordered = two wristbands, one CD preordered = one wristband, etc. All who place preorders in advance will receive an email with preorder pickup and event details on or by the day before our event.

After the performance portion of our event, St. Paul & the Broken Bones will signalbums for wristbanded attendees. Wristbands are required for the signing for all 13+ and guarantee entrance to our event. (Wristbands are not required for kids 12 & under attending with a wristband-holding adult.)

Preorders placed for local, event pickup will be available starting at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 10th, the day of our event with St. Paul & the Broken Bones.

Preorders for mail order will be autographed by St. Paul & the Broken Bones and ship out from Grimey’s after Friday, October 10th.

Event preorders for store pickup will be held for three months after the event date. Please pick up your copy of St. Paul & the Broken Bones no later than January 10th.
