Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Amorphis - Borderland CD/2xLP (Reigning Phoenix)

Borderland is the fifteenth studio album from Finnish metal legends Amorphis, continuing their tradition of blending progressive metal, melodic death metal, and folk influences. Produced by Jacob Hansen, the album explores themes of myth, shadow, and transformation, set against Amorphis’s signature heavy riffs and atmospheric soundscapes. The record reflects on the fragile boundaries between light and darkness, despair and hope. [Green / blue marbled vinyl pressing.]

Automatic - Is It Now? CD/LP

The third album from Automatic, Is It Now? sees the Los Angeles trio hone their sound, pairing topical, irreverent lyrics with danceable “deviant pop” songs. Produced by Loren Humphrey (Arctic Monkeys, Cameron Winter), Is It Now? is Automatic’s boldest and most urgent music to date. [Black and blue half-and-half vinyl pressing.]

Biffy Clyro - Futique CD/LP (Warner)

The first full-length from the Scottish band since 2021. 'Futique' delves into our relationship with memory and what we cherish across time. Informed by reflections on the digital age's impact on memory and the band's own remarkable journey from teenage friends to alternative rock giants, 'Futique' explores the challenges and enduring connections that define them. It's a powerfully relatable narrative from one of Britain's most beloved bands, reminding us to appreciate what we have. [Indie exclusive silver & black splatter vinyl pressing.]

Blue Lake - The Animal LP (Tonal Union)

Blue Lake reveals his most ambitious album yet, which finds its visionary creator Jason Dungan harnessing the collective alchemy of his band, with ten spirited tracks that resonate with a powerful directness, evoking an ecological connection to the wider world. On the gracious album opener "Circles", which sees the group embrace in choral unison, like in birdsong, voices echo as a part of the surrounding sonic environment. The band are foregrounded and formidable in their delivery, forming a rich, acoustic accompaniment to Dungan's zither strokes, earthy guitars and percussive patterns.

Bright Eyes - Kids Table LP (Dead Oceans)

Following the band's 2024 visceral and hook-filled Five Dice, All Threes, the new EP exists as both a partner-in-crime to that album, and a self-contained world all of its own. "Kids Table" and "Dyslexic Palindrome" both feature Hurray For The Riff Raff's Alynda Segarra, a continued creative partnership following the two bands' recent tours together and viral live version of Bright Eyes fan-favorite, "Lua." And while a Bright Eyes ska song was likely not on this year's bingo card, "1st World Blues," cowritten with Alex Orange Drink (So So Glos), makes a case for a third wave of the genre, with its biting take-down of contemporary American civilization decline, propelled by gang vocals and an infectious off-beat rhythm.

Brothers Comatose - Golden Grass CD (Swamp Jam Records)

Golden Grass is the band's fifth album. We wrote it about the current wave of string bands coming out of California that are creating a new take on an old style of music. They start with their foundations in traditional bluegrass and incorporate folk, rock, and jam elements to form that Western "Golden Grass" sound. Lots of great string bands have come out of California, like AJ Lee & Blue Summit, Molly Tuttle, and even going back to Old & In the Way who were trailblazers for this type of sound. It's about taking the heart and soul of bluegrass and infusing it with everything we love about music today.

Mariah Carey - Here for It All CD/LP (Gamma)

Here For It All is Mariah Carey's new project with gamma. This album marks the start of a bold new era for Mariah. It balances her legacy with fresh cultural relevance and pop significance.

Neko Case - Neon Grey Midnight Green CD/LP (Anti-)

As if cosmically enacted, Neko Case breaks to the surface once again with the new album Neon Grey Midnight Green and reminds listeners that she is one of our greatest living songwriters - perpetually becoming more fearless and adventurous. The Grammy-nominated iconoclast's ninth LP is self-produced and her biggest-sounding and most intimate-feeling release yet. [Indie exclusive clear frosted vinyl pressing.]

Clover County - Finer Things CD/LP (Clover County)

Clover County is a collector - of life lessons, love letters, bottle caps, ticket stubs, and ones that got away. With the newfound perspective of her twenties, the 24-year-old singer-songwriter packages these memories and mementos from adolescence into her radiant debut album, aptly named Finer Things. Clover blends the twang of timeless country songwriting with tongue-in-cheek observations on modern love. The result is a coming-of-age soundtrack that honors the blessings in disguise, the young loves that come and go, and the ephemera you pick up along the way. [Cream colored vinyl pressing.]

The Cords - The Cords LP (Slumberland)

The last few years have been quite a whirlwind for Scottish pop duo The Cords. Sisters Eva and Grace take their cues from forebears like Dolly Mixture, Shop Assistants, Heavenly and Tiger Trap, reinvigorating the C86 sound with style and infectious enthusiasm. Recorded over the course of six days with Jonny Scott (CHVRCHES), their self-titled debut album is some of the most vital indiepop we've heard in years, bursting with boundless energy, youthful confidence, lively melodies and most importantly terrific tunes. From album opener (and first single) "Fabulist" to the heads-down rush of "October," from the punk-ish thrill of "You" to the instant classic "I'm Not Sad," The Cords have crafted a debut that handily transcends their influences and shows their firm grasp of all that makes great, timeless *pop*.

Daffo - Where the Earth Bends LP (Concord)

The debut album from an essential new voice on the indie rock scene. Produced and mixed by Rob Schnapf (known for his work with Elliott Smith, Beck, Cat Power, and more), Where the Earth Bends encompasses an intimate yet frenetic sound that perfectly mirrors the album's emotional intensity. On this record, singer/songwriter Daffo brings an unexpected beauty to the most uncomfortable of feelings. [Blue vinyl pressing.]

Multi-BRIT Award and Mercury Prize nominee Olivia Dean presents her highly anticipated second album, The Art of Loving, via Capitol Records. Dying Wish - Flesh Stays Together CD/LP (Sharptone)

'Flesh Stays Together' is the brand-new album from Oregon bruisers Dying Wish. Following from their highly acclaimed sophomore album 'Symptoms of Survival', 'Flesh Stays Together' is another unforgivably heavy piece of work which blends melodies, crushing riffs and thumbing drums, all tied together to create the unmistakable Dying Wish sound. [Red vinyl pressing.]

Geckos - Geckos CD/LP (Org Music)

Geckøs is the collective spirit of acclaimed songwriter M. Ward, Giant Sand visionary Howe Gelb, and Irish multi-instrumentalist McKowski. Born out of an impromptu recording session that was sparked by an encounter at the wedding of a mutual friend, the project blends the rich flavors of the Southwest with indie folk, Spanish influences, and a touch of desert mysticism.  [Transparent red vinyl pressing.]

Geese - Getting Killed CD/LP (Partisan)

Geese return with their 3rd album, 'Getting Killed'. They tracked the album with Kenneth Blume in 10 fast-paced days. With scant time for overdubbing, what emerged is a chaotic comedy, shambolic in structure but passionately performed, informed by an exacting vision. Big riffs are layered on choir samples; hissing drum machines pulse softly behind screeching guitars. They balance a disarming tenderness with an intensified anger, trading their love of classic rock for a disdain for music itself. [Clear vinyl pressing.]

Guitari Baro - Guitari Baro CD/LP (Chrysalis)

Guitari Baro - meaning "Guitar Conversations"- is a groundbreaking instrumental trio showcasing extraordinary virtuosity. The ensemble features three renowned griot musicians from Guinea and Mali: guitarists Gaoussou Kouyaté and Kerfala Diabaté, joined by master balafonist Lassana Diabaté.
Their project features musical conversations across their shared Mande griot musical heritage, drawing on the entrancing regional styles of the Mande repertoire, while also referencing idioms from jazz, Congolese rumba, rock and roll, Guinean dance bands, and Cuban music, evoking the past and present in sublime, futuristic ways.

Lady Wray - Cover Girl CD/LP (Big Crown)

Lady Wray makes her highly anticipated return with Cover Girl, her third album on Big Crown Records. The celebratory Cover Girl takes listeners on a free-spirited joyride glittered with '60s and '70s-inspired soul and disco, '90s hip-hop and R&B, and perhaps the most defining element, gospel. Following the healing journey that was 2022's Piece of Me, Nicole has performed on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, NPR's Tiny Desk, and toured the world. After this period of growth, Lady Wray is now ready to let her hair down and embrace all of what life has to offer. Reunited with producer Leon Michels (Norah Jones / Clairo / El Michels Affair) for the record, the outcome is effortless and undeniable, a reflection of their longtime collaboration that extends over a decade. [Indie exclusive blue & purple vinyl pressing.]

LCD Soundsystem - Home (Tom Sharkett Edit) 12" (DFA)

An underground favorite gets its official due: Tom Sharkett's edit of LCD Soundsystem's "Home" reimagines the track over a looped Fleetwood Mac drum break. First picked up by DFA after Flo played it on NTS, the edit quickly sparked fan buzz and chatroom chaos. Now pressed to 12", it's a rare crossover moment that connects LCD's legacy with a new generation of DJs and dancers.

Cate Le Bon - Michelangelo Dying CD/LP (Mexican Summer)

It's creation led by pure emotion, Cate Le Bon's seventh record Michelangelo Dying usurped the album she thought she was making. The product of all-consuming heartache, her feelings overrode her reluctance to write an album about love, and in the process became a kind of exorcism. Musically, there is a continuation and expansion of a sound a machine with a heart that has taken shape over her last two records (2019s Reward and 2022s Pompeii) as Le Bon has increasingly taken control of the playing and producing herself. As guitars and saxophones are pushed through pedals and percussion and voices are fed through filters, an iridescent, green and silky sound emerges, with flashes of the artistic singularities of David Bowie, Nico, John McGeoch and Laurie Anderson surfacing and disappearing below the waterline throughout. [Indie exclusive bone white colored vinyl.]

Vincent Lima - To Love a Thing That Fades CD/2xLP (Island)

To Love A Thing That Fades, Vincent Lima's debut studio album, captures the raw emotion of love, grief, and the process of learning to grasp firmly to beauty even as it's fading from view. This 15-track album takes you on a walk of hope, transitioning through emotions like love and loss, and finally arriving at a point of understanding that things aren't any less worthy of love just because they're harder to see. To Love A Thing That Fades is an epic journey from start to finish, offering listeners closure to the long saga Vincent has been sharing since his initial release of "Orpheus" back in 2023. [Gold smoke colored vinyl pressing.]

John Maus - Later Than You Think CD/LP (Young)

Two decades into a boundary-pushing career, American musician, composer, and academic John Maus releases his most powerful work yet: Later Than You Think. Arriving via his new label Young (FKA twigs, The xx, Sampha), the album explores themes of justice, confession, rebirth, transformation, and spiritual warfare, further expanding the liminal space where outsider art collides with art-pop, raw emotion, and intellectual depth. Holding a degree in experimental music from CalArts and a PhD in political science from the University of Hawaii, he’s been dubbed a “philosopher pop star” and “nostalgic futurist” for the way he merges academic rigor with lo-fi synth-pop aesthetics. [Indie exclusive ice blue vinyl pressing.]

Robert Plant - Saving Grace CD/LP (Nonesuch)

Saving Grace is Robert Plant's first album featuring the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's new band of distinguished players, which he calls "a song book for the lost and found." While his recent adventures have centred around Nashville, having reunited with Alison Krauss for 2021's chart-topping, multi GRAMMY-nominated Raise The Roof, it was in the English countryside that Robert Plant connected closely to this diverse group of musicians, who through their own experiences had a shared leaning towards his much-loved corners of evocative song. Saving Grace breathes fresh life into a collection of centuries-old music arranged by Robert Plant, Saving Grace and Sam Amidon, as well as more recent treasures by Memphis Minnie, Bob Mosley (Moby Grape), Blind Willie Johnson, The Low Anthem, Martha Scanlan, Sarah Siskind and Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk's Low. [Indie exclusive fruit punch colored vinyl.]

Tallahassee's Pool Kids are turning up the heat with Easier Said Than Done. Following the critical success of their 2022 self-titled album-hailed by Paste, Stereogum, and Consequence-Pool Kids have been making waves on the road with the likes of Soccer Mommy, PUP, Joyce Manor, and most recently, Beach Bunny. Easier Said Than Done finds the band leveling up in every way, delivering explosive energy, emotional depth, and undeniable hooks that cement their place as one of the most exciting acts in indie rock today.

Sam Prekop - Open Close CD/LP (Thrill Jockey)

Sam Prekop’s work over the last 30 years, whether created primarily on his guitar or on his modular synth, is consistent in its powerful melodicism, delicate arrangements and subtle evolution. Prekop’s singular blend of melody, impressionistic lyricism and quietly intricate rhythms are the core of the singular sound of The Sea and Cake. Since 2010’s Old Punch Card, Prekop’s exploration of modular synthesis and electronic atmospheres has come into its own. Highly skilled at manipulating the sonic interplay, Prekop has established a style all his own, his pieces are complex, expressing real movement as harmonies bloom with granular detail. Open Close unearths new, soulfully human sounds from synthetic textures precisely juxtaposed, its subtle contrasts in texture and rhythm are a free-flowing celebration of sonics as stunning as they are ephemeral.  [Indie exclusive coke bottle clear vinyl pressing.]

Purity Ring - Purity Ring CD/LP (The Fellowship)

On their self-titled fourth album, the Canadian duo have crafted a concept album that serves as the soundtrack to an imagined RPG. Inspired by games like Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, the record tells the story of two hapless characters - embodiments of James and Roddick- on a journey to build a kinder world amid the ruins of a broken one. Roddick reaches into his deepest musical memories to sculpt euphoric, otherworldly soundscapes of vintage digital synths, classical guitar, pan flutes, breakbeats, and haunted vocoders. Along with her unmistakeable sound, James has unlocked an arsenal of vocal deliveries and a joyous, dizzying stream of consciousness in her words. Here with their first self-titled and self-released LP, Purity Ring steps fully into a dream they've been circling for years-one that feels vast, unrestrained, and true to who they've become. [Pink vinyl pressing.]

Sprints - All That Is Over CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Having underlined their status as one of the UK and Ireland's most exciting breakthrough bands with their universally-acclaimed 2024 debut Letter to Self, vocalist and guitarist Karla Chubb, bassist Sam McCann, drummer Jack Callan and new guitarist Zac Stephenson return for their second act as an evolved entity: stronger, sharper and fully assured. All That is Over lays out its cards in a landscape of duality and disparity, anger, ambition and a thousand feelings in between. Its title is taken from a lyric at the centre of "Beg," an uncompromising slice of propulsive punk that seeks the cleansing of new beginnings. Written on tour buses, in soundchecks and very much in real time, it's an album set against the backdrop of a litany of atrocities - the war in Gaza, the wildfires in LA, Trump's executive order denying the rights of trans people - that sees Sprints trying to make sense of a society gone mad.
