Terri Lyne Carrington & Christie Dashiell - We Insist 2025! CD/LP (Candid)
One of the seminal works of jazz as protest, We Insist! Max Roach’s Freedom Now Suite, was first released in 1961 by Max Roach in collaboration with Abbey Lincoln and lyricist Oscar Brown, Jr. on Candid Records. Invoking both the historic pains and hopeful potentiality of the Black experience, Roach created a striking avant-garde vocal-instrumental suite commemorating the centennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and acted as an urgent call for freedom during the civil rights era, which remains poignant as ever today. In honor of Roach's centennial, GRAMMY-Award Winning drummer-producer Terri Lyne Carrington and GRAMMY-nominated vocalist Christie Dashiell have reconceptualized We Insist, paying homage to Roach and Lincoln's legacy by sonically broadening the suite, while being steadfast with the still poignant social justice message - We Insist! Continuing her work honoring jazz traditions, Carrington (the albums producer), acknowledges Roach’s legacy and its continued relevance to today's fight for freedom in order to bring forth a new story of jazz's future. Joining the lineup are many emerging artists that Carrington introduced to Candid Records: Morgan Guerin, Milena Casado, Simon Moullier, Matthew Stevens, Devon Gates, guest percussionist Weedie Braimah, and rising star vocalist Christie Dashiell, filling in the role of Abbey Lincoln. The album has a special cameo appearance by trombonist Julian Priester, the only living musician from the original recording. Together, they impart the story of the "Freedom Now Suite" respecting its jazz tradition, while allowing the influence of other music traditions from the African Diaspora including gospel, soul, funk, Afro-Latin, West African, and blues, with the resounding spirit and urgency that rings true on the original album.

Graham Hunt - Timeless World Forever LP (Run For Cover)
Graham Hunt has an intuitive ability to carve out his own space within the long, confusing history of American pop music. The Wisconsin-based songwriter has spent the past four years hard at work building records that synthesize timeless guitar pop chops with a layered approach to production and a sly lyrical eye. His music balances the surreal with the quotidian, the melodic with the rhythmic, the cryptic with the triumphant-often proving that slacker playfulness and Heartland earnestness are not mutually exclusive. Timeless World Forever - Hunt's first release for Run For Cover - provides closure on a formidable body of songs while opening the gates for a new stage in the artist's long, prolific career. Miller's plaintive voice and sharp lyricism shine, especially in "Lost Again," where he pleads, "I just need you here for a second." Backed by collaborators like Jake Lenderman, Xandy Chelmis, and Ethan Baechtold (MJ Lenderman / Wednesday), Losin' is both elegy and celebration-a testament to the people and places that shape us, even after they're gone. The album closes with a poignant nod to Springsteen on "Thunder Road," a fitting tribute to a man who loved the open road.

Cosey Fanni Tutti - 2t2 CD/LP (CTI/Conspiracy International)
Composed, performed and produced by Cosey Fanni Tutti, this nine-track album moves between propulsive beat constructions and expansive electronic explorations, continuing themes from 2019's acclaimed album TUTTI. It is a personal reflection; a sonic realization of her life, drawing on her powerful inner resolve and expressing it through music. The album finds Cosey making sense of some very tough years, dealing with personal bereavements alongside swinging world events. Centering on her own strength and self will, the album's two distinct parts -- one rhythmic, one more meditative -- are connected by an overwhelmingly positive mood. Even in the more melancholic moments, there's a lightness that she explains is an "acknowledgement that it's alright to be sad, that's part of life, but there is so much joy too in our memories of people we lose and in the moments we share with each other. Joy is our resistance." As a founding member of the hugely influential avant-garde band Throbbing Gristle, one half of electronic pioneers Chris and Cosey, and as an artist channeling her experience in pornographic modelling and striptease, her work on the margins has reshaped the mainstream.
Stephen Vitiello with Brendan Canty and Hahn Rowe - Second LP (Balmat)
Fans of ambient, experimental electronic music, and sound art will be familiar with Vitiello, a New York native, long based in Virginia, who has collaborated with a cross-generational list of greats: Taylor Deupree, Steve Roden, Lawrence English, Tetsu Inoue, Nam June Paik, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Pauline Oliveros, and many more. This album is something different. It may begin in ambient-adjacent territory, but it quickly veers off, and it just keeps zigzagging, taking on elements of krautrock, post-punk, dub, and the groove-heavy interplay of groups like Natural Information Society and 75 Dollar Bill. This stylistic turn is thanks in large part to Vitiello's choice of collaborators. Active since the early 1980s, Rowe -- a violinist, guitarist, and producer/engineer -- has played with, or manned the boards for, a frankly jaw-dropping list of musicians: Herbie Hancock, Gil Scott-Heron, the Last Poets, John Zorn, Glenn Branca, Swans, Brian Eno, David Byrne, Anohni, R.E.M., Yoko Ono, and many more. Canty, of course, is the legendary drummer of Fugazi, the visionary DC post-hardcore group, as well as Rites of Spring before them, and, currently, the Messthetics, a Dischord-signed instrumental trio with guitarist Anthony Pirog and Fugazi bassist Joe Lally.

Marcos Valle - Gara LP (Vampi Soul)
The follow-up album to Brazilian singer, songwriter, and musician Marcos Valle’s 1970’s self-titled long player, Garra continues to express a socially aware stance combined with a playful hodge-podge of samba, bossa nova, baião (a rhythmic beat from the rural northeast of Brazil), black American music, and psychedelic rock. Marcos and lyricist brother Paulo Sergio recorded the disc with some of Brazil’s top studio musicians and created the pair’s most overtly political statement. Recorded amongst sessions for a steady stream of popular TV novella soundtracks—a side gig for the sun-kissed composer—the results tested the military led government’s hand picked sensors, looking over the country’s art and music with sharp eyes for critical or objectionable content. Unfortunately, some of Valle’s peers didn’t’ fare as well and were either exiled (like Tropicália movement icons Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso in 1969) or fled the country for the United States or Europe.

The Wild Magnolias - The Wild Magnolias LP (Jackpot)
In 1970, one of the leaders of the musical Mardi Gras Indian Tribes movement, The Wild Magnolias, became the first band to have a commercial recording released as a Mardi Gras Indian group. The band's legendary performances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival also helped them launch into the recording of their 1974 debut LP-the self-titled The Wild Magnolias which we are so pleased to present to you here. Easily some of the most fantastic New Orleans funk and soul ever laid down on vinyl. Eight songs that don't let up with it's street-beat funk, call-and-response vocals (with lyrics like "just a few puffs to make you feel all right" leading the charge) and a recording that captures the unhinged mania of so many talented musicians crammed into a studio making a stone-cold classic. With The New Orleans Project as their backing band including Albert Roberts (who played with Allen Toussaint & The Meters), Larry Panna (The Gaters), Snooks Eaglin (Professor Longhair as well as the creator of 15 solo records) and Willie Tee (one of the most influential figures in the New Orleans funk and soul scene who arranged & co-wrote on this LP), the NOP beautifully rides along with the assortment of bottles, tambourines, drums and rattles that the tribe members bring to the air. One of the coolest records we've ever had the privilege of reissuing (not to mention it's beautiful beaded front cover artwork that emblazons the front cover and the iconic photo of the band in all their Mardi Gras splendor that graces the back), this LP will turn heads for those who haven't heard it yet, while being a repeat funk classic to those who already have it in their bones. [“You NEED this LP!” —Doyle]
