Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
AFI - Silver Bleeds the Black Sun... CD/LP/cassette (Run for Cover)
With their twelfth album, AFI are once again at the start of a bold new chapter, only this time they've even managed to surprise themselves. How does a band that's known for creative upheaval still find ways to push themselves out of their comfort zones? "We started with something that sounded like Echo & the Bunnymen," explains guitarist Jade Puget, who produced and engineered the album. "But eventually we ended up with this melange of death rock and post-punk-all this stuff from the late '70s and early '80s that we grew up on, like Sisters of Mercy, and Bauhaus, and Siouxsie and the Banshees." The goal became making an album with a singular mood, something dreamy and ethereal, and the band members found themselves diving headfirst into influences that had always been deeply embedded in AFI's musical core, but now were being brought to the forefront. Silver Bleeds the Black Sun... is dark and otherworldly, but also grandiose and stately, biting and beautiful in equal measure. [Limited edition indie-exclusive "First Run Club" white & violet color vinyl pressing.]
Author & Punisher - Nocturnal Birding CD/LP (Relapse)
After celebrating 20 years since the inception of Author & Punisher in 2024, founding composer, vocalist and mechanical engineer Tristan Shone embraces the project's broadest scope to-date with Nocturnal Birding. Shone has welcomed collaborators in the past, but guitarist Doug Sabolick (Ecstatic Vision, Plaque Marks, A Life Once Lost, etc.) is the first genuine bandmate in Author & Punisher, contributing creatively on guitar in ways that shape the persona of Nocturnal Birding, complementing Shone in melody and wrought tonal heft. There is literal birdsong all over Nocturnal Birding, and transposing those melodies and rhythms to guitar became the root of the material, representing a rare coming together of the natural world and mechanized sounds. [Limited edition orange & blue merge vinyl pressing.]
Ava Luna - Ava Luna LP (Western Vinyl)
Ava Luna's self-titled album is an introspective and grounded collection that marks a significant evolution for the quartet. Following the departure of Kye (fka Becca Kauffman) in 2019, Ava Luna re-emerges with a focus on the fundamental elements of drums, bass, and the dual vocals of Carlos Hernandez and Felicia Douglass. This back-to-basics approach was a conscious decision to move away from the expansive, "cosmic" feel of their previous album, Moon 2. Moving beyond traditional lead and backup roles, Carlos and Felicia's voices dance, weave, and harmonize, often blending into a singular, almost supernatural entity. Ultimately, Ava Luna's self-titled album paints an intimate yet exaggerated portrait of NYC, a cacophony of jagged post-punk, funk, and dance beats giving way to lush strings and spacious minimalism.
S. Carey - Watercress LP (Jagjaguwar)
There's a cool, clean strum that introduces Watercress. An immediately noticeable shift in mood from the last time we checked in with S. Carey. He was heavy-hearted on 2022's 'Break Me Open' - crestfallen and reckoning after a big love lost. And so, Watercress sets us off with the ringing of hard-won hope. These guitar-forward songs are in many ways an extension of 2018's beloved 'Hundred Acres.' The guitars are driving the bus. The drums are the backbone. And Sean's voice is telling the tale. Seems like a simple recipe but there's more nuance here than highwire act. Sean Carey has been a vital organ of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver project for over fifteen years. Beginning with 2010's 'All We Grow,' Carey's four albums and some epic EPs have all been, in ways both overt and subtle, naturalistic explorations of landscapes of the heart and of the real world, each crafted with the patience of a true fisherman and the acumen of a folk-jazz phenom.
Deaf Club - We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness CD (Southern Lord)
Deaf Club continues their scathing indictment of society with their second full-length album, being released on Southern Lord and Three One G: We Demand a Permanent State of Happiness. Fast wit and faster blast beats are mainstays of the band, but there is also a sense of growth. This is their strongest songwriting yet, incorporating more hooks and good old-fashioned moments to mosh while staying as weird as ever. Raygun guitar riffs and unexplainable sounds abound. Justin Pearson, Brian Amalfitano, Scott Osment, and Jason Klein excel at inciting emotion in the face of apathy and voicing disgust amid a world rapidly burning.
The Diasonics - Ornithology CD/LP (Record Kicks)
On their sophomore album, the Moscow-based instrumental outfit The Diasonics return with Ornithology, a sophomore album that pushes their sonic boundaries forward while staying true to their unmistakable style. Recorded at their custom-built Studio 23-housed in a repurposed Soviet-era lamp factory-the album captures the result of two years of intense creative exploration and experimentation. With their signature blend of cinematic funk, Eastern-flavored melodies, instrumental hip-hop and analog soul, The Diasonics have carved out a unique space in the global funk scene. Ornithology marks a new chapter: inspired by recurring avian themes in their surroundings, from trains and stations to local folklore and the cries of birds circling their studio, the record channels ideas of movement and freedom, both thematically and musically.
Dodie - Not for Lack of Trying CD/LP (Decca)
Not For Lack Of Trying explores the English singer-songwriter's journey with mental health over the last decade. "I have only been able to deal with parts of life in bite-size pieces. These songs are packaged reflections of those pieces - exploring heartbreak, yearning for meaning, and joy amidst depression."
Dwarfs of East Agouza - Sasquatch Landslide CD/LP (Constellation)
A landslide of molten psychedelia, ecstatic groove and heat-haze improvisation, Sasquatch Landslide finds The Dwarfs of East Agouza further expanding their singular fusion of North African rhythm, shaabi rawness, and freeform noise-jazz. On their Constellation debut, the Cairo-born trio-Maurice Louca, Sam Shalabi, and Alan Bishop-delivers their most focused and tactile album to date. Everything here unspools and overlaps: saxes loiter, guitars twang, organs shimmer, and drum loops skitter in constantly morphing arrangements.
Carter Faith - Cherry Valley CD/2xLP (MCA)
Rising country star Carter Faith presents her highly anticipated debut album, Cherry Valley. The album features 15 tracks including, “If I Had Never Lost My Mind…” and “Grudge.”
Gatlin - The Eldest Daughter CD/LP (Dualtone)
On The Eldest Daughter, Florida-born artist Gatlin delivers her most intimate, defiant, and emotionally raw work to date - a record that navigates identity, independence, and the legacy of growing up under the weight of expectation. Both a reclamation of self and a fearless confrontation of her past, the album chronicles Gatlin's journey through queerness, mental health, familial relationships, gender confidence, and creative self-discovery, all with unflinching honesty and cathartic wit. [This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Brennen Leigh - Don't You Ever Give Up on Love CD/LP (Signature Sounds)
Always and assuredly precise in her ability to craft country music of the highest caliber, Brennen Leigh's latest album - the uncompromisingly titled Don't You Ever Give Up On Love - is packed full of playful ear worms, tender tearjerkers and honky tonk quintessence that two steps straight to the heart. Deemed by No Depression as "an adventurous artist wholly and authentically herself," Leigh embodies classic country that speaks to the heart. As renowned for her musicianship as for her writing, Leigh's pure country voice, masterful flatpicking, hard hitting, incisive lyrics and vibrant melodies dazzle on Don't You Ever Give Up On Love.
Orbit Culture - Death Above Life CD/2xLP (Century Media)
The Swedish quartet's Century Media debut, "Death Above Life", is not merely a statement of how far the band has come, but it is the sound of metal in the most modern sense. "This record represents change, a new beginning," says Orbit Culture guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Niklas Karlsson. "It brings up a lot of good and bad emotions but it's a big change for the better. It feels like a rebirth." From the album's scorching opener, "Inferna" to it's clench-fisted title track to the elegiac closer, "The Path I Walk", It's clear: Orbit Culture is at the top of their game. [Indie exclusive coke bottle green vinyl pressing.]
Pigeons Playing Ping Pong - Feed the Fire 2xLP (No Coincidence)
With their eighth studio album, Feed The Fire, Pigeons Playing Ping Pong unveil a triumphant new chapter. Building on their signature blend of funk, rock, and jam, the band pushes forward with inventive arrangements, unique time signatures, and an ever-expanding sonic palette. PPPP's 12-track expedition ventures into uncharted territory while staying grounded in the improvisational spirit and funk-fueled roots that have defined their sound for over 15 years.
Vernon Reid - Hoodoo Telemetry CD/LP (Players Club)
If you've followed the beats of his half-century career, you'll know Vernon Reid as an artist who paints in every color. Depending on the era you dive into, you'll find the New York polymath pinballing between jazz, metal, punk, funk, electronica and hip-hop, cutting heads with collaborators as eclectic as Mick Jagger and Public Enemy, endlessly shedding his skin yet always speaking his truth. "Hoodoo Telemetry," considers the 66-year-old of this kaleidoscopic opus," is like a piece of my all-over-the-place mind. I was in different spaces with these songs: some are new, others are reclamations of material from a long time ago. But suddenly, I found the focus and it was very clear to me: I gotta do this now." Hoodoo Telemetry isn't a linear piece, but a thrillingly tangled tapestry of genres, collaborators and material from different time periods. Its energy and chaos seems to reflect and challenge what Reid considers the tumultuous socio-political backdrop it will soundtrack. [This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Rocket - R is for Rocket CD/LP (Transgressive)
The Los Angeles-based band's debut album is a joyride through sonic terrain that is gloriously loud, anthemic, bombastic and beautiful, with instantly captivating songs that achieve the rare feat of evoking nostalgia while sounding completely new. The band's jagged, fuzzed-out sound has antecedents in '90s guitar bands like Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine, but Rocket are doing something uniquely their own with those touchstones. It's no wonder they are widely considered one of the most promising guitar-forward bands of their generation. [Vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Sydney Rose - One Sided LP (Alternate Side)
On her debut album One Sided, 20-year-old Georgia native Sydney Rose wrestles with growth: growing up, growing apart, growing within. While the singer/songwriter's 2022 EPs You Never Met Me and This Kind of Thing Doesn't Last showcased intimate lyricism with the help of understated synths, muted drum machines, and stacked harmonies, One Sided returns to her stripped-back roots, offering tenderhearted meditations on childhood, love, and the evolution of friendship, with a guitar in hand. After her February 2025 single, "We Hug Now," had huge viral success, Sydney Rose has sold out shows all over the US, UK, and Europe. [Black Ice vinyl pressing.]
Say She She - Cut & Rewind CD/LP (drink sum wtr)
There's nothing more resonant than the human voice. It contains timbres and textures no other instrument can replicate, but most importantly, it's immensely powerful: One voice can spark an uprising, but many voices in unison create a movement. Nya Gazelle Brown, Sabrina Cunningham, and Piya Malik, the three women who front NYC punk-chic, discodelic band Say She She, understand how to wield such power. They soar above irresistible grooves, locking together in gorgeous three-part harmonies that cleverly disguise the feeling of righteous rebellion permeating their music. Theirs is a multi-pronged call to action: Move your body, expand your mind, and recognize your strength. [Red vinyl pressing.]
Janet Simpson - Can I See You Tonight? LP (Cornelius Chapel Records)
Janet Simpson is a force of intuition. The Birmingham legend has shared her presence as a deep, patient listener and her fierce power as a singer, guitarist, and keyboardist to bands like Wooden Wand (World War IV), Delicate Cutters, Teen Getaway, and Timber. But on Can I See You Tonight, Simpson's unmatched prescience is channeled toward her own visions, expansive yet spellbindingly intimate. The follow-up to her stunning solo debut Safe Distance (2021), it's a wryly observant alt-country tapestry with frayed edges that gesture toward Simpson's history in DIY and punk scenes.
Ches Smith - Clone Row LP (Otherly Love Records)
Drummer/composer Ches Smith debuts his inventive new two-guitar quartet – featuring Mary Halvorson, Liberty Ellman and bassist Nick Dunston – on the striking new album Clone Row. Anyone who has paid attention to the creative music scene over the last couple of decades might be tempted to suspect that Ches Smith has cloned himself a few times over. It’s sometimes hard to believe that a single person could accomplish the dizzying breadth and wide-ranging invention of the drummer/composer’s prolific career. As a composer, Smith finds endless possibilities in this seemingly limited instrumentation, weaving together varied threads from his divergent earlier projects in ways that sound not quite like any of them.
Snooper - Worldwide LP/cassette (Third Man)
Push pull/ Side to side/ This way/ That way/ Can't decide/ Pressure! Pushing in/ Flattened me out from end to end," Blair Tramel sings on "Worldwide," the title track from Snooper's new album. The song captures the dizzying headspace of the band's rapid ascent from the Nashville DIY circuit to global touring and notoriety in far-flung corners of the world's underground music scene. But though the band was feeling the pressure - the song is partially inspired by hydraulic press YouTube videos - all the challenges presented opportunity for transformation. "Worldwide" is a mission statement for the record not just thematically, but also aesthetically, showcasing Snooper's stylistic exploration. Newly inspired by electronic music, the rhythm of "Worldwide" is unrelenting and mechanistic - capturing the frenzied pace at which Snooper's lives were moving, but allowing for release in Tramel's yelps and Connor Cummins' scuzzy guitar breaks. "Worldwide" introduces us to the next chapter of Snooper - more personal, more cathartic, sharper, bolder, catchier. "There's a sweet spot," Tramel says of the evolution that came out of Snooper's whirlwind experience these last few years. "For a moment, push and pull create this beautiful dance. [Indie exclusive clear pink vinyl pressing.]
Taylor Swift - The Life of a Showgirl CD/LP (Republic)
Written and produced with Max Martin and Shellback, who also worked on the 2014 album 1989 and 2017's Reputation. Portofino Orange Glitter vinyl pressing.
Thrice - Horizons / West CD/LP (Epitaph)
Horizons/West (2025) completes the thematic arc begun with Horizons/East (2021), pairing personal reflection with sweeping sonic ambition. Self-produced by the band, engineered by guitarist Teppei Teranishi, mixed by Scott Evans, and mastered by Matthew J. Barnhart, Horizons/West balances cinematic tones with spacious atmosphere. Teranishi calls it "less dense," while vocalist Dustin Kensrue sees it as their first sequel-two halves of a larger emotional and political panorama. Blending post-rock textures from their earlier albums Beggars and Major/Minor, with rhythmic complexity from Horizons/East, the band sharpens its edge without losing nuance. Kensrue's vocals shift from whisper to roar, anchoring meditations on perception, memory, and social influence. [Indie exclusive opaque maroon vinyl pressing. Vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Upchuck - I'm Nice Now CD/LP (Domino)
As KT puts it, there’s never been a moment when she didn’t have rage. As the singer of Upchuck, the Georgia punk band whose music is as sharp as a scythe, KT has felt fierce energy inside her well before she had the band as an outlet through which to channel it. Upchuck’s Domino debut was recorded at Sonic Ranch Studio in Texas with producer Ty Segall. But don’t mistake newfound niceness for weakness. It’s self-preservation. “In this world of constant distractions and stressors it’s important to keep your mind, body, and spirit sane and sound enough to continue through this seemingly never-ending fight,” she says. With I’m Nice Now, Upchuck channels their feverishness into an album that, yes, is filled with rage. But in addition to being a continuation of their musical exorcism, the album delivers a sharp critique of the powers that be, lamenting why they still have to be those in power. [Indie exclusive silver vinyl.]
Wavves - Spun LP (Many Hats)
Wavves recently made a long-awaited return with their first new music since 2021, news of a newly launched Cannabis brand Wavvy Supply Co., and a Los Angeles County wildfire benefit show at Zebulon earlier in the month. Rhino Rocktober release. Reissue of the 1972 live album, remixed by Steven Wilson. [This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Didjits - Strictly Dynamite: The Best of Didjits LP (Touch & Go)
Didjits combined a love of hard rock (AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Cheap Trick), punk (Sex Pistols and, importantly, the metallic art show of The Plasmatics), and fifties rock and roll (specifically Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard). Chaotic live shows would have guitarist and vocalist Rick Sims skillfully turning the audience against him, adding to the frenzy of the stop-on-a-dime crazed rock that they were slowly perfecting. Starting in 1988, Didjits released five full-length albums on Touch and Go Records (including a reissue of their 1986 self-released debut album, Fizzjob) along with two singles and an EP. MTV videos, sold out clubs, tours of Europe and North America followed - ending in 1994 (ironically the same year The Offspring released the platinum selling Smash containing a cover of "Killboy Powerhead" from Didjits' 1990 release Hornet Pinata). Pressed on 180-gram opaque purple vinyl, this LP is an archival legacy of the band from their beginnings in rural Illinois to their dissolution over a decade later.

The triple-LP topped charts around the world and earned universal acclaim as a rock masterpiece. George became the first Beatle to have a solo #1 single in both the UK and America with the album's lead single, "My Sweet Lord," which introduced his signature slide guitar playing. George co-wrote the album's opening track, "I'd Have You Anytime" with his friend Bob Dylan, who also wrote another song on the landmark album, "If Not For You."
Bobby Hutcherson - Montara LP (Blue Note Records)
A high-water mark of Bobby Hutcherson's 1970s Blue Note output, Montara, is a feel-good album that found the vibraphonist conjuring up an intoxicating hybrid of Latin jazz and fusion grooves from the percolating rhythms of "La Malanga," "Yuyo," and "Oye Como Va" to the alluring "Montara" and "Love Song." This stereo Blue Note Tone Poet Edition was produced by Joe Harley, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original analog master tapes, pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI, and packaged in a deluxe tip-on jacket.
Jason Isbell - Something More than Free CD/2xLP (Southeastern Records)
How does an artist follow a critically-acclaimed breakthrough record like Southeastern? For Jason Isbell, the answer was Something More Than Free. With songs like "24 Frames," "Flagship," and "Children of Children," the 2015 album found Isbell tackling the subjects he knows best: the dignity of work, the difficulty of love, the friction between the present and the past. Something More Than Free further established the North Alabama native as a bona fide songwriter, and also netted him his first two Grammy Awards, for Americana Album of the Year, and for American Roots Song of the Year ("24 Frames.") 10 years later, Something More Than Free has been re-mixed by the legendary Sylvia Massy (Prince, Johnny Cash, Tom Petty), breathing new life into these now classic songs in the Isbell canon. And as a cherry on top, the man has included a b-side here. "Should I Go Missing" is a bluesy jammer highlighted by Isbell's slide guitar playing. [Indie exclusive Denim blue vinyl pressing.]

Originally released in 2005, the album peaked at #9 on the UK chart and marked a more reflective phase for the band, featuring longer, more orchestral compositions. The title references both the French city where it was recorded and the Ramones' 1978 album, Road to Ruin. It features the singles, "Low C," "Fin," and fan-favorite, "St. Petersburg," a captivating and beautiful track with a hint of John Lennon's influence. Arguably their most personal album, it represented a departure from the band's signature upbeat sound. This new, mellow, and introspective direction made the entire album a critical success.

White Boy and the Average Rat Band - White Boy and the Average Rat Band LP (Riding Easy)
White Boy and the Average Rat Band was formed in the unlikely small mountain town of Richlands, Virginia in late 1979 by guitarist and songwriter Michael Matney. Fresh out of high school in 1979, Matney would venture over the mountain to neighboring Tennessee to try his luck in the music Mecca of Nashville. There Matney would join Kriss Famous' longtime established local act "Tabu", replacing Ron Keel as lead guitarist. It was in this arrangement that Matney would be christened with the name "White Boy". His time with “Tabu” and in Nashville would be brief before returning back to Virginia. Once back home, Matney would take a job with a local record store and recording studio owner who would grant him recording time in exchange for employment. There Matney would helm his own project deemed White Boy and the Average Rat Band; writing, composing and producing the self-titled debut. On the project, Matney played all the instruments, in exception to the two separate drummers used to complete the album. In 1980 the White Boy and the Average Rat Band self-titled debut album would be released in a limited number of 300 copies, of which 50 would be lost. They would see very limited distribution, which only added to the curiosity the album would become. Matney would then go on to other projects, such as a live guitarist sitting in with Dr. Hook and as a touring guitarist with David Allen Coe. During which time, unbeknownst to Matney, White Boy and the Average Rat Band's name was gaining somewhat of a cult status amongst record collectors around the globe seeking private press releases and on-the-fringes type rock bands. Riding Easy offers the first official reissue of this lost 1980 album.
