Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Algernon Cadwallader - Trying Not to Have a Thought CD/LP (Saddle Creek)
Trying Not to Have a Thought, arriving September 12th via Saddle Creek, isn’t just the first Algernon Cadwallader album since 2011’s Parrot Flies. It’s also the first with their original lineup—vocalist-bassist Peter Helmis, guitarists Joe Reinhart and Colin Mahony, and drummer Nick Tazza—since Algernon’s seminal 2008 debut, Some Kind of Cadwallader. Shortly after that album was recorded—and long before it was heralded as a lodestar for the 2010s “emo revival”—Tazza and Mahony departed the band. Despite their looming influence on the aforementioned “revival,” Algernon broke up in 2012 following the release of Parrot Flies and remained stubbornly deceased until their fiendishly anticipated resurrection in 2022. Algernon Cadwallader are certainly cognizant of their cult legacy, a status that's transformed their fanbase into a unique convergence of graying punk lifers and fresh-faced teens who first discovered “midwest emo” on TikTok. Given the long gap between albums and the critical acclaim they’ve garnered in that time, it would’ve been understandable for the guys to feel pressured to live up to their own standards while making this new record. Thankfully, the opposite was the case. With Trying Not to Have a Thought, Algernon Cadwallader juggle intrinsic musical connection and shrewd lyrical intention with remarkable poise.
Between The Buried and Me - Blue Nowhere CD/2xLP (Inside Out)
The 11th studio album by progressive metalcore band Between the Buried and Me. Available in indie exclusive coke bottle clear and standard light blue and orange color vinyl.
Rafiq Bhatia - Environments CD/LP (Anti-)
Oscar-nominated composer Rafiq Bhatia has only deepened his status as "one of the most intriguing figures in music today... who refuses to be pinned to one genre, culture or instrument" (New York Times). On his new album Environments, Bhatia makes sculptural, meticulously crafted music that finds common ground among ecstatic avant-garde jazz. New technological integrations have allowed Bhatia to merge his last decade of development as an electroacoustic composer back into his practice as an improvising guitarist, using real-time sampling and manipulation to express and develop multiple worlds of sound at once. Rafiq has previously co-scored Marvel's Thunderbolts and the Oscar-nominated soundtrack for Everything Everywhere All AT Once with his bandmates, Son Lux.
Buscabulla - Se Amaba Asi LP (Domino)
Se Amaba Así-which loosely translates to "The way they loved"-sees Buscabulla co-founders Raquel Berrios and Luis Del Valle devoting their eagerly awaited second album to the ruthless examination of their private life as a couple, instrumentalizing myriad strains of Latin music to explore their most intimate struggles as both artists and lovers. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]
Dance Gavin Dance - Pantheon CD/LP (Rise Records)
Sacramento rock virtuoso's Dance Gavin Dance return with new album Pantheon, their first since 2022's Billboard Top 10 album, Jackpot Juicer. [Limited edition cobalt/orange smush splatter vinyl.]
Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Innern CD/LP (Season of Mist)
Since forming in 2009, Der Weg Einer Freiheit has carved out a singular place in modern black metal, blending relentless intensity with a philosophical core. Rooted in the genre's foundations yet constantly evolving, the German quartet is known for it's emotional depth, compositional complexity, and striking live presence. On their sixth album Innern, the band turns inward with devastating clarity. Each of the six tracks offers a meditation on human fragility and existential transformation, shifting between blistering aggression and haunting serenity. The interplay between soaring guitars, pulsing bass, and intricate percussion frames Nikita Kamprad's visceral vocal performance with precision and raw urgency. Produced, mixed, and mastered by Kamprad himself, the album captures both immediacy and atmosphere-placing the listener in direct confrontation with the void.
Die Spitz - Something to Consumer CD/LP (Third Man Records)
When the Venn diagram of passion, friendship, identity, and artistry collide, it can feel as if fighting words are spitting from your veins. And as postmodern society crumbles, Die Spitz giddily bounce between a dozen different ways to push back. If the world of rock music were an ice cream shop, the Austin quartet have sampled each flavor, flipped the freezer over, and started dancing with the employees they helped unionize. On their debut album, Something to Consume, Ava Schrobilgen, Chloe de St. Aubin, Ellie Livingston, and Kate Halter fight against the inescapable consumption that surrounds life. "There's a political side to it, but addiction and love can also be all-consuming," Livingston says. And as the foursome trade off instruments, swapping songwriting and vocal duties, and generating powerful songwriting in concussive bursts, Die Spitz have created their own little pocket of the world where we can all stand on the edge together. [Indie exclusive green vinyl.]
Fruit Bats - Baby Man CD/LP (Merge)
Baby Man, the new album by Fruit Bats, is like nothing else in Grammy-nominated songwriter Eric D. Johnson's catalog. Little in the arc of his career-including Fruit Bats' evolution from home recording project to rollicking roadshow, his solo output, and his work with Bonny Light Horseman-points the way to this album, in which his only accompaniment, aside from the occasional blush of synthesizer, is a guitar, banjo, or piano. Save for producer Thom Monahan, reuniting with Johnson for the first time since Fruit Bats' 2019 breakthrough Gold Past Life, it's just Johnson in the room, meaning that when the turntable's needle meets Baby Man's groove, it's just him and the listener, mutually in for a reckoning. Monahan's return to the booth was vital: having mapped the outer limits of Eric D. Johnson's musical imagination, nobody was better equipped for the deepest trip yet into his soul. Baby Man is an intimate album, but rather than deliver a stripped-down or back-to-basics approach to the Fruit Bats sound, it's introspection is rendered at epic scale.
Guerrilla Toss - You’re Weird Now CD/LP (Sub Pop)
When NYC-based experimental dance punks Guerilla Toss, active since 2011, were in Vermont recording their new full-length album You're Weird Now, frontwoman Kassie Carlson would prepare what she called 'punk lunch': a communal meal made by raiding the studio fridge for whatever was left and assembling a sandwich from the most random ingredients imaginable. Regularly joining punk lunch were two legends from their own corners of the weird music world: Stephen Malkmus (Pavement, The Jicks) and Trey Anastasio, Phish guitarist and owner of The Barn; the recording studio where Guerilla Toss were making You're Weird Now, with Malkmus in the producer's seat. Engineer Bryce Goggin, who has worked with Malkmus since Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, and Ben Collette, Phish's longtime engineer at The Barn, were also part of the crew. Guerilla Toss' fifth album and second for Sub Pop is a hugely creative and joyful statement about the joy of creativity. With You're Weird Now Guerilla Toss reclaim the word "weird" for everyone brave enough to let their freak flag fly and stay true to their artistic vision no matter what-a way riskier act than it's ever given credit for, and one that requires a certain amount of serene self-confidence that it takes time and effort to cultivate and sustain. And they do so with the enthusiastic support of their musical predecessors: a standout moment arrives with "Red Flag to Angry Bull," which builds to a campfire sing-along-worthy outro featuring Malkmus and Carlson duetting over a chatty, classically Phish-y (there's really no better word for it) solo from Anastasio. [Indie exclusive yellow vinyl ‘loser edition’
Michael Hurley - Broken Homes and Gardens LP (No Quarter)
Broken Homes and Gardens, the final studio album from Michael Hurley, was completed in March 2025 just before Hurley left for his final shows in Asheville and Knoxville. He had been working on these 11 tracks for the past three years at The Rope Room studio in Astoria, Oregon with the same crew as his 2021 LP The Time of the Foxgloves (Kati Claborn and Luke Ydstei of The Hackles and engineer Brian Bovenizer). As was common with Hurley LP's: there are re-workings of older compositions ("Indian Chiefs and Hula Girls", "Abomidable Snowman") alongside new songs ("Fava", "The Monkey") making for a brilliant final collection, and capping off one of the most consequential bodies of work of any American songwriter.
In The Pines - Sunbeam Dream LP (Colemine)
The new album from In The Pines, Sunbeam Dream, takes the band's shoegaze-informed psych rock and raises the bar. With a heavier emphasis on synths moving from a textural element to a main character in the band's sound (courtesy of a 1971 resuscitated Mellotron), the band stakes a claim in the lineage of the grandeur and grit of albums like The Verve's A Northern Soul or The Charlatans (UK) self-titled album where both bands' production seemed to match their creative vision. With Sunbeam Dream, everything feels both brighter, crisper while at the same time delightfully swimming in a twilight haze that surrounds each element.
Ruston Kelly - Pale Through the Window CD/LP (Rounder)
From feeling "spiritually and creatively listless" to falling in love and surrendering to a higher power, Ruston Kelly's "Pale, Through The Window" propels fans through a transformative three-month chapter in Kelly's life. [Indie exclusive green vinyl with signed insert.]
King Princess - Girl Violence CD/LP (Section 1)
Girl Violence is the third album from King Princess. Written after walking away from a long-term relationship, a major label deal, and a city that dulled her spark, the album captures the chaos, clarity, and catharsis of starting over. Since her breakout with "1950" - a Platinum-certified anthem with over a billion streams - King Princess has carved out a singular space in modern pop. Now, she takes full creative control with a record that's emotionally feral and sonically fearless. [Indie exclusive orange vinyl.]
Jens Lekman - Songs for Other People’s Weddings CD/LP (Secretly Canadian)
Jens Lekman is an accidental wedding singer. But he's also a wedding singer for a reason. Ever since his 2004 song "If You Ever Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding)" he has had a side gig fielding requests from strangers to sing at their weddings. For over twenty years, he's had a particular vantage point from which to see the role love songs can play in our lives. In 2020, he and novelist David Levithan co-conceived a novel-with-music, Songs from Other People's Weddings. Originally this album was meant to contain the songs from the weddings in the book, but as the novel came together, Lekman began to imagine what happened between the book's chapters. The book and the album eventually became intertwined but also found their own paths. The book remained the structure of the story, but the album sometimes snuck behind the scenes. Stories from the songs made their way into the book and vice versa. The result is an exploration of what we sing about when we sing about love - euphoria, doubt, dislocation, tenderness, conflict, playfulness, gratitude, ingratitude, longing, belonging, questioning, answering. It's very much about a relationship and how it's reflected through the relationships and weddings of others, but most of all it's a lovesong to lovesongs. [Limited edition opaque yellow vinyl.]
Lorna Shore - I Feel the Everblack Festering Within Me CD/LP (Century Media)
Lorna Shore has scaled unexpected heights, played to the biggest crowds of their career and literally walked through fire to arrive at I Feel the Everblack Festering Within Me. This New Jersey quintet's latest album picks up where they left off on the now classic Pain Remains. While the album's first single, "Oblivion" is classic Lorna Shore, it's with the likes of the anthemic "Unbreakable", the pathos-driven "Glenwood" or the triumphant guitar melodies of "Lionheart" that you can hear the sound of extreme metal pushing through it's own boundaries, informed by topping huge festivals and bashing through arenas with the likes of Gojira and Mastodon. Lorna Shore's ascent has been nothing short of breathtaking and I Feel The Everblack Festering Within Me is nothing short of their career defining album. [Indie exclusive light blue marble vinyl.]
Carson McHone - Pentimento CD/LP (Merge)
Pentimento is an audacious and rewarding record. It is also a reckoning: How can love and beauty exist in the presence of brutality? Disquietingly. Dissonantly. Against it's shadow and bearing it's mark. This is what McHone and her collaborators capture on Pentimento with the subtlety of watercolor painting and the richness of verse, in ghost vocals and child voices alike. Every layer is a universe unto itself, revealing the pulse that animates Carson McHone's creative drive. Arranged here and expressed as a whole, it constitutes a masterpiece.
Meredith Moon - From Here to the Sea CD/LP (Compass)
Meredith Moon's third album, From Here To The Sea, finds the Canadian-born songwriter and instrumentalist taking a slight detour from the Appalachian old-time roots of the album's predecessor, Constellations. Produced and recorded in Ontario and Nashville by Colin Linden (Lucinda Williams, T-Bone Burnett, Bruce Cockburn) and featuring Rebecca Lovell (Larkin Poe), Lillie Mae Rische & Dominic Davis (Jack White), Julian Taylor, George Receli (Bob Dylan), and Jerry Douglas, among others, the album explores avenues of blues, folk, and folk-rock, and even incorporates elements of old-time jazz. Moon's signature instrument - the banjo - still makes an appearance, along with the roots music that shaped her sound, but instead of being the anchor to the sonic pallet, it creates a subtle backdrop as she allows her songwriting to take center stage. [Limited edition lavender vinyl.]
Kassa Overall - Cream CD/LP (Warp)
GRAMMY-nominated jazz visionary and Doris Duke Artist Award winner Kassa Overall presents CREAM. Eight interpretations of hip-hop classics by The Notorious B.I.G., Wu-Tang Clan, Dr. Dre, A Tribe Called Quest, OutKast, Digable Planets, and Juvenile.
Parcels - Loved CD/LP (Because Music)
Loved, Parcels' third album, is exuberant and euphoric, but also reflective. It's an album of unity - with each other, with the listeners, in the grooves - and that's indisputable. "We do have a purpose as a band to our audience: we're giving people joy," says guitarist/vocalist Jules Crommelin. "I see it as spirit, and it's an incredibly powerful thing." Includes "Safeandsound," and "Yougotmefeeling." [Indie exclusive blue vinyl.]
Josh Ritter - I Believe In You, My Honeydew CD/LP (Pytheas Recordings)
Throughout his decades long career, Ritter has established himself as "one of the most perceptive artists making music today" (American Songwriter), releasing twelve albums to date and earning the respect of countless music legends, with artists such as Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Bob Weir having performed and recorded his songs. With the release of 'I Believe in You, My Honeydew,' Ritter shares ten new tracks that further demonstrate the insightful and engaging artistry that he's celebrated for. Produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Langhorne Slim), the new album features Ritter alongside his Royal City Band: Kassirer (piano, organ, synthesizer, accordion), Zachariah Hickman (acoustic and electric bass, thumb piano, mandolin), Rich Hinman (guitars, pedal steel, mandolin) and Ray Rizzo (drums, percussion). [Indie exclusive blue vinyl.]
Saturdays At Your Place - These Things Happen CD/LP (Wax Bodega)
On their second full-length album, these things happen, Saturdays at Your Place take everything that made their early material resonate-twinkly guitars, heart-on-sleeve songwriting, a distinctly Midwestern ache-and stretch it into something even more resonant. It's a record about growing up without growing cold, and it's also a testament to where they're from (Kalamazoo, Michigan) both literally and musically; proof that a band with strong hometown roots can still shake the ground. These things happen isn't an album that provides many answers. Instead, it's a cathartic companion to survival with friends at your side, gear in the trailer, and enough hope to keep showing up. [Limited edition cobalt blue vinyl.]
Ed Sheeran - Play CD/LP (Atlantic)
After closing the chapter on his Mathematics era, Ed Sheeran is finally back and stepping boldly into a fresh new phase for 2025. An artist who has continuously pushed himself, and his craft, into new territory, Sheeran's latest album 'PLAY' sees him collaborating with musicians and producers from across the globe, uncovering a shared musical language that transcends cultural boundaries. By exploring the common threads of scale, rhythm, and melody that connect musical traditions throughout history, Sheeran has crafted a collection of songs that seamlessly blend these influences into a bold, pop-driven sound. This new chapter celebrates diversity and unity, highlighting Ed's artistry in an exciting and transformative way, with PLAY promising to be one of the years defining pop records. [Indie exclusive opaque pink vinyl.]
Silverstein - Pink Moon CD/LP (Unfd)
Following the release of Antibloom, Silverstein returns with Pink Moon: the second chapter in their ambitious 16-song double album, conceived and recorded during a transformative stretch in the high desert of Joshua Tree. Born from the same sessions as Antibloom, the songs on Pink Moon were sequenced with intention, offering a distinct yet complementary listening experience. Known for their meticulous attention to flow and emotional pacing, the band crafted both halves to stand on their own while also telling a broader, interconnected story, one that ebbs and crashes like the desert winds that shaped it. Pink Moon features the only guest appearances on the project, with stunning contributions from Cassadee Pope and Rory Rodriguez of Dayseeker - voices chosen mid-process when the band sensed the need to push certain songs into new sonic territory. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]

Since their formation in 2022, West Texas Exiles have built a rabid hunger in their fans for a full length album. "8000 Days” showcases the talent of their three principal songwriters Marco Gutierrez, Daniel Davis and Colin Gilmore, along with masterful performances by bassist Eric Harrison and drummer Trinidad Leal. The album is full of songs that contrast love and heartache, life on the road and life at home, their hometowns and the new horizons and people they discover on tour.
Asher White - 8 Tips for Catastrophe Living LP (Joyful Noise)
The Statue of Liberty, as she appears on the cover of 8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living, the new album by Asher White, is in pieces but not destroyed - in progress, being built, not yet complete. Her torch is on the ground, her head somewhere out of frame. Before she was a symbol, she was metal, and living, sweating people riveted her together. The spirit of de/construction characterizes 8 Tips, White's 16th LP overall and first since signing to Joyful Noise. Like White's previous albums, 8 Tips for Full Catastrophe Living darts boldly among varied musical styles. Doom metal splits open into bossa nova; psychedelic rock and power pop flip into industrial techno. Each song emerges from it's composite parts in the studio: White doesn't draft or demo before recording, but builds out her pieces sculpturally, sound by sound. "It's forever collage, forever assemblage," she says of her music. "To me, it has more to do with J Dilla, L.A. beat, and musique concrète than pop songwriting." [Limited edition magenta color vinyl.]
Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...
Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow 3xLP (Heavy Flowers)
Can you believe it? Devendra Banhart's Cripple Crow - originally released by XL in 2005 - is turning 20 years old. This was the 5th album from the Venezuelan American artist who is considered the pioneer of the "Freak Folk" and "New Weird America" movements. To celebrate - Devendra has compiled a reissue of the out of print release that features a 3rd Bonus LP (on Clear Green Smoke!) featuring 9 bonus tracks, including 1 B-Side, 5 previously unreleased demos, 2 previously unreleased live tracks, and 1 unearthed smash hit from the recording sessions. This release is the first on his newly created Heavy Flowers label. The album received a "Best New Music" 8.4 review from Pitchfork upon it's release.
Neal Casal - No One Above You (The Early Years 1991-1998) CD/LP (Royal Potato)
No One Above You (The Early Years 1991-1998) collects 13 previously unreleased demo recordings by the late singer/songwriter. Recorded primarily in the years preceding his classic debut album, Fade Away Diamond Time, producers Gary Waldman, Jim Scott and Jon Graboff remixed the original recordings and added subtle additions of guitars, bass, drums and percussion. The packaging includes an extended recollection by Neal's longtime manager and friend Waldman, detailing the events that lead to Casal's solo career and subsequent evolution into a revered singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Lyn Christopher - Lyn Christopher CD/LP (Real Gone)
Let’s start with this fact: this 1973 record is one of the most sought-after collector’s items of its era. Why? Well, first of all, Lyn Christopher’s self-titled release on the Paramount label is a really fine album, a beguiling blend of pop and R&B sounds featuring the artist’s winsome vocals backed by some of New York’s finest studio cats, like guitarist Hugh McCracken, Blood Sweat & Tears multi-instrumentalist Lou Marini Jr., and future Back Street Crawler keyboardist Mike Montgomery. And “Take Me with You,” the penultimate song on the album, has been sampled by Mobb Deep’s Havoc, LL Cool J, 50 Cent, The Game, and, memorably, by the Smut Peddlers on their 2001 underground classic “One by One.” But there is another very big reason why original copies of Lyn Christopher command a king’s ransom (and no, it’s not because it’s never been reissued in any format). If you know who Chaim Witz and Stanley Eisen are, then you probably already know the answer. That’s right…this album marks the first appearance on record of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS! They sing background vocals on two tracks, “Celebrate II” and “Weddin’”; and supposedly that’s Peter Criss doing handclaps. What’s more, this album introduced legendary engineer Eddie Kramer—who, though unbilled, was engineering the sessions—to Simmons and Stanley, who were still calling their band Wicked Lester. Kramer then produced the four-song demo that got KISS signed to Casablanca, and the rest, as they say, is history! We at Real Gone are thrilled to FINALLY be reissuing this fabled album on CD and light blue vinyl, remastered by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision and complete with liner notes by Bill Kopp that set the stage. A real slice of pop music history that you gotta hear!
