Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Billy Allen + The Pollies - Black Noise LP (Single Lock Records)

There is a ferocious Southern engine inside of Billy Allen + The Pollies' debut album Black Noise. It thrums to life atop a classic rock chassis and expertly weaves in and out of gospel, grunge, funk and soul along its eleven-song journey. From the explosive top of the album (a liberating anthem of self-worth called "All of Me") to the spiritually haunting final track (the wurlitzer fueled "Go on Without Them") Black Noise is a genre-defiant haymaker that lands. [Limited edition purple vinyl.]

Botch - 061524 CD/LP (Sargent House)

Influential hardcore innovators Botch's impact on aggressive music is undeniable. Their chaotic, math-laced brand of hardcore helped shape the genre’s landscape well after the band’s abrupt breakup in 2002. For years, a reunion seemed unlikely—until a chain of unexpected events brought the original lineup back together for the band’s first new recording in over 20 years. "061524" is a blistering, unflinching document of a band reawakened—not as a legacy act, but as a vital force. The album showcases the energy, grit, and heart of a group that’s not only older and wiser—but more rehearsed and way more ambitious. The performances are tight but still full of the raw unpredictability that defined their early years.

Chappell Roan - "The Giver" 7" (Island Records)

Chappell Roan’s “The Giver” 7-inch features the songs "The Giver" and "Fix It In The Morning (Demo)" and is available on 5 different color variants: The Construction Worker [Neon Orange vinyl], The Dentist [Neon Pink], The Lawyer [Aqua], The Plumber [Swirl color vinyl], and The Private Investigator [Silver].

Frankie Cosmos - Different Talking LP (Sub Pop)

Different Talking, the sixth and, so far, best album by NYC indie-rock four-piece Frankie Cosmos, seems to exist across time and space, as we all kind of do. It's a collection of fragments and memories, remembered places, and reinterpreted feelings that adds up to a lucent, humming whole: a sturdy, worldly indie-rock record about aging and the passage of time that nonetheless manages to feel sharply current. [Limited edition red vinyl ‘loser edition’]

Deep Blue Something - Lunar Phase CD/LP (Flatiron Recordings)

Lunar Phase, the new LP from alt-pop group Deep Blue Something, is at once a love letter to the genre-agnostic musical landscape of the early 90s and very much of the moment. Perhaps best known for their hit single "Breakfast at Tiffany's" which reached the top 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became a global hit in 1995, culminating with a U.K. #1 in 1996, the band's music encompasses a range of styles, from dream-pop to alternative rock, pop, and post-grunge. [Limited edition translucent blue vinyl.]

Durry - This Movie Sucks CD/LP (Big Pip Records)

This Movie Sucks is the sequel to Durry's debut album, Suburban Legend. It asks what happens after the movie credits roll, after the band moves out of the garage, after the lifelong dream is achieved... and finds that after "happily ever after" just comes real life. Produced by Phil Odom (Say Anything, Code Orange, Turnover), This Movie Sucks takes the nostalgic pop-punk riffs of their earlier work and cranks them up to 11, turning earnest songs about toxic online behavior, crushing minimum wage jobs, processing grief, and taking accountability into fist-pumping sing-along anthems.

Elli - Elli LP (Horisontal Mambo)

Elli presents her highly-anticipated self-titled debut album on the Horisontal Mambo label, founded by Nordic disco legend Prins Thomas. This 12-track album marks the beginning of a new era in her sound, introducing a bold and fresh take on cosmic synth pop. Blending ethereal soundscapes, cinematic textures, and euphoric '80s-inspired energy, Elli's debut promises an immersive musical journey. She explains, "The album captures a variety of emotions -- moments of nostalgia and transcendence. It explores the space between euphoria and melancholy, creating a sense of timelessness." From the tender, inviting pulse of "New Muse" to the introspective beauty of "In My Field of Experience," the album offers a wide-ranging experience, moving between euphoric highs and quiet moments of reflection. It's a work of contrasts, an exploration of the personal. An honest debut.

Enji - Sonor LP (Squama)

For a few fleeting moments during a sunset, the sky is cast a vivid shade of amber. A dramatic flare of color, a moment belonging to both the day and the night. It is within this vibrant, ephemeral world, that Mongolian-born, Munich-based Enji has written her new album Sonor. Sonor is a reflection of Enji's personal evolution and the complex emotions that accompany living between two worlds. The album's themes revolve around the unplaceable feeling of being between cultures, not as a source of conflict, but as a space for growth and self-discovery. Enji explores how distance from her traditional Mongolian roots has shaped her identity, and how returning home brings a heightened awareness of these changes. Backed by a band of renowned jazz musicians (Elias Stemeseder on piano, Robert Landfermann on bass, Julian Sartorius on drums and co-composer Paul Brändle on guitar), Enji isn't just revisiting tradition, she's distilling the feeling of home, of small joys that reveal their significance only when viewed from afar.

Mark Fry - Not On the Radar CD/LP (Second Language)

First studio album in 11 years for Normandy-based, English psychedelic folk musician/painter, Mark Fry. When 19-year-old Mark Fry recorded his debut album 'Dreaming With Alice' for RCA sublabel, "It" in Italy in 1971, little did he know that it would become a much-sought-after, much -bootlegged "acid folk" classic three decades later, with millions of Spotify plays. Fry, an acclaimed painter in the interim, returned to making music in 2008 and has released three more acclaimed studio albums - this, 'Not On The Radar,' is the fourth. These days, far less "acid" than in his youth, Fry still knows his way around a beautiful melody. The new album, recorded with musician friends at his Normandy home studio and produced by David Sheppard (Ellis Island Sound/State River Widening) is resplendent with love songs, the beauty of nature and the passing of time.

Gasoline Lollipops - Kill the Architect CD/LP (Alp)

Over the course of six albums, Gasoline Lollipops have explored the far corners of amplified American roots music. They've been genre-benders and boundary-breakers, fusing the ferocity of punk-injected rock & roll with the rawness of folk music, the storytelling of country, and the soul of roadhouse R&B. On Kill the Architect, they team up with longtime Los Lobos member Steve Berlin to distill that ever-evolving sound into something signature and distinct. Partially inspired by frontman Clay Rose's compositions for a modern ballet based upon the tale of Samson and Delilah, Kill the Architect tackles big themes - including connection, balance, identity, and the search for one's true self - with an ever bigger sound, veering from heavy-hitting rock anthems to lighter, country-influenced folksongs. Produced by Berlin during a series of live-in-the-studio performances and brought to life by a band of hard-touring, finger-bleeding road warriors, Kill the Architect captures a band firing on all cylinders with their tank filled to the brim, and their wheels pointing toward a horizon of their own making.

Nick Govrik - One More Time For the Man LP/CD (Del Rio Records)

One More Time For The Man is Nick Govrik's debut solo album (Del Rio Records). A 10-song effort, the record is a masterclass in country soul storytelling and old-school R&B authenticity delivered by this Nashville songwriter and bassist. One More Time for the Man isn’t just a collection of tracks—it’s a cohesive body detailing Govik’s Nashville-bred Gen X journey. Produced by guitar phenom Tom Bukovac, the record’s legitimacy and believability is solidified by a bill of all-star friends and musicians—Will Hoge, Ed Jurdi, Guthrie Trapp, Wendy Moten, Jimmy Wallace—who have appeared throughout Govrik’s career. Coined by critics as “a cross between Randy Newman and Sly Stone,” Gorvik’s fusion is truly realized on the album. Don’t miss Nick when he and his band rock the shop on Saturday, June 28th, at 4:30PM. Free and all ages!

Greet Death - Die In Love CD/LP (Deathwish)

Imagine an even more laid-back Khruangbin, soundtracking a vintage Billy Dee Williams malt liquor advert, remixed by Zero 7, and you're in the right zip code. Kaytranada - Timeless CD/2xLP (RCA)

When KAYTRANADA left the 2021 Grammys with two awards (Best Dance/Electronic Album for 2019's BUBBA and Best Dance Recording for "10%"), he made history as the first Black and first openly gay artist to win the former category. The industry recognition was long overdue for the producer, who had been building a devout following for nearly a decade. "In my mind I was finally a true artist," he tells Apple Music's Zane Lowe. After relocating to Los Angeles, he channeled that confidence into making his third solo album, TIMELESS: "It felt more serious-more legit. I was still having fun making TIMELESS, but making BUBBA was another type of fun where I didn't really take it seriously." Like it's predecessor, TIMELESS is a collection of club grooves for catching a vibe. It's packed with guests who effortlessly acclimate to KAYTRANADA's singular sound while imprinting their own touch. Ravyn Lenae offers breathy seductions on the hard-edged R&B of "Video," and Thundercat delivers comical disses in soothing falsetto on the jazzy hip-hop of "Wasted Words." Back-to-back tracks "Do 2 Me" (featuring Anderson.Paak and SiR) and "Witchy" (featuring Childish Gambino) hit an energy peak, their tales of late-night infatuation framed by sultry, body-enveloping production.

Drawing not only on his extensive experience as a composer and live instrumentalist, but also on the countless studio production and mixing sessions he has taken part in the course of his many projects (in solo, with SUNN O))) or KTL, to name but a few), Stephen O'Malley's work on this new piece is ambitious, engaging in an inspired research that delves into the deep intricacies between polyphony, intonation and timbrality, enhanced by melodic motifs.

Jim O’Rourke - Shutting Down Here Cd/LP (Shelter Press)

Shutting Down Here is a special work. Symbolically, it covers a period of thirty years, between two visits by Jim O'Rourke to the GRM, the first, as a young man fascinated by the institution and his repertoire, the second, as an accomplished musician, influential and imbued with an aura of mystery. Shutting Down Here is a piece shaped like an universe, a heterogeneous world in which collides the multiple musical facets of Jim O'Rourke: instrumental writing, field recordings, electronic textures and cybernetic becomings, dynamic spaces, harmonic spaces, silent spans.

Buddy and the two Juniors were relaxed, cutting familiar tunes like Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man" and their own off-the-cuff originals, including "Buddy's Blues." Additionally, two improvised tracks were recorded in a single burst of creative energy: "Riffin'" and "Talkin' 'Bout Women Obviously," all making for a fresh, inviting and inspiring album. With the album's hit eponymous track along with other classics like "Mardi Gras Mambo" and "They All Ask'd for You," Fire on the Bayou is a fantastic blend of the blues, dance and funk grooves that continues to define the New Orleans music scene and is one of the many examples of why The Meters are considered New Orleans royalty. To honor the album's 50th anniversary, this album has been cut from the original tapes by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and is pressed locally on 180 gram premium-quality vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing's brand new plant in Oxnard, California as part of the new Rhino Reserve line.

In August of that year, the band set up at Emerson, Lake & Palmer's legendary Manticore Studio in Fulham to rehearse and showcase their new lineup. Orbital - Orbital 2 LP (London Records)

NME awarded it 9/10 in their review, and it was chosen as one of Mixmag's best albums of all time. Standout track, "Halcyon + On + On", became an instant classic, known for its ethereal atmosphere and haunting vocal sample from Opus III's "It's a Fine Day." The track's dreamy progression and uplifting yet melancholic tone made it a staple in film soundtracks and DJ sets, embodying the emotional depth electronic music could achieve. "Impact (The Earth Is Burning)" is another defining moment, an evolving journey of layered breakbeats and dynamic synth arrangements, reflecting the duo's ability to create both club-ready and introspective music. Meanwhile, "Lush 3-1" and "Lush 3-2" demonstrate Orbital's knack for crafting intricate, evolving grooves, balancing pulsating rhythms with melodic flourishes that keep the listener engaged.

Various Artists - Born in the City of Tanta - Lower Egyptian Folklore and Bedouin Shaabi from Libya's Bourini Records 1968-75 LP (Sublime Frequencies)

Egypt's "official" popular music throughout much of the 20th Century was a complex form of art song steeped in tradition, well-loved by the middle and upper classes, and even accommodating to certain non-Arabic influences. It was highly structured by professional musicians working an established industry centered in the capitol, Cairo. However, far from the bustling cosmopolitan center of Cairo, north and northwest, in towns like Tanta and Alexandria and extending across the Saharan Desert to the Libyan border, dozens of fully marginalized artists were developing a raw, hybrid shaabi/al-musiqa al-shabiya style of music, supported by smaller upstart, independent labels, including the short-lived but deeply resonant Bourini Records. Bourini released 7-inch 45 RPM singles by 15 artists, all but one of them Egyptian, igniting brief careers for Alexandrian singer Sheikh Amin Abdel Qader and the blind Bedouin legend Abu Bakr Abdel Aziz (aka Abu Abab). The tracks compiled here comprise a full range of styles covered by the label, while highlighting some of its most gobsmacking moments, from Basis Rahouma's beastly transformation into a growling and barking man-lion by the end of "Yana Alla Nafsa Masouda," to Reem Kamal's hopeful-if-bitter handclapping party pivot "Baed Al Yas Yjini," which descends into an almost Velvet Underground outro-groove of nihilistic dissonance.

Warda - Wemalo LP (Wewantsounds)

Wewantsounds reissues another Warda classic from the '70s, Wemalo, originally recorded in 1975 by the legendary Arabic Diva who has been sampled by Jay-Z and J Dilla. The album blends traditional Arabic music with 1970s grooves, showcasing Warda's distinct vocal style. She is accompanied by a full-sized orchestra, updating the classy traditional sound with modern instruments (electric guitar, organ). Wemalo was penned by composer Baligh Hamdi. This reissue features newly remastered audio, original cassette artwork and a two-page insert with a new introduction by Mario Choueiry from the Institut du Monde Arabe. Wemalo ("So What") was recorded live in 1975, during the peak of her career. Partnering with her new husband, renowned composer Baligh Hamdi, she created a series of albums filled with lengthy, hypnotic compositions that showcased her commanding voice and ability to captivate audiences. Merging traditional Arabic music with modern instrumentation -- including electric guitar and organ (likely played by Hany Mehanna) -- the album unfolds into several mesmerizing sections, highlighting Warda's superb singing.

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan 2xLP (Third Man Records)

Recorded on the stairway of Jack White's home in the Indian Village neighborhood of Detroit, this album features marimba, tympani, mandolin and bells, as well as the usual guitar and drums and piano. Described by someone as an "oddball masterpiece," it was not commercially released on vinyl until ten years after its initial release. Now in celebration of it's 20th Anniversary, Get Behind Me Satan will be released on 2LP, one red and one clear disc, both including black wisps

Frank Zappa - Cheaper Than Cheep 3xLP (Zappa Records)

In 1974, Zappa recorded a TV concert movie in his private rehearsal hall, but there were tech issues that caused the video to be shelved in the 'Vault' for 50 years. Now, with advanced post-production, we present Cheaper Than Cheep, revealing the newly restored original vault audio masters. This stand-alone soundtrack configuration comes as a 3-LP set on 180-gram black vinyl accompanied by an extensive booklet with rare, unseen images and liner notes from Ruth Underwood and Joe Travers.
