Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Alestorm - The Thunderfist Chronicles CD/LP (Napalm)
Eighth studio album by Scottish heavy metal band Alestorm. Following Seventh Rum of a Seventh Rum and last year's Voyage of the Dead Marauder EP, the pirate metal legends reunite with producer Lasse Lammert for another wild ride.
Badflower - No Place Like Home LP (John Varvatos Records)
In true Badflower fashion, the Nashville-based rockers return to make hard topics bearable with their new album, No Place Like Home, the long-awaited follow-up to their 2021 sophomore record. Taking the time to get things right, frontman Josh Katz leads us through personal tales of paranoia, regret, and even pet loss, that somehow remain universally relatable and pleasantly palatable. The band's signature ability to coat uneasy subject matter in self-deprecating disarmament makes this album go down smooth.
William Beckmann - Whiskey Lies & Alibis LP (Warner Nashville)
With a voice made for heartbreak and a style rooted in tradition but built for now, William Beckmann brings timeless storytelling into sharp, modern focus. A 12-song masterclass in heartbreak, resolve and reckoning, WHISKEY LIES & ALIBIS is a layered country album that captures the sting of lost love and the clarity that follows. For his major label debut on Warner Music Nashville, Bechmann wrote eight of the album's tracks alongside some of Nashville's most elite songwriters, painting vivid portraits of lonesome nights, blurred truths and hearts that refuse to quit.
Benét - Make ‘Em Laugh LP (Bayonet)
Benét's new album 'Make 'Em Laugh' is dynamic, vibrant, and genre fluid. Featuring friends like Faye Webster, Margaux, and AnnonXL, Benét's warm vocals shine on contemplative indie-rock tracks like "Pieces Of Me" and "Demon." On "Too Scared to Say," and he employs autotune to convey a sense of swirling confusion, a sentiment that intensifies on experimental electronic track "Slimmer." This is music that wonders about the big life questions that connect us all and that finds solace in community. If the album is a game of Clue, it's one that captures all the insights and stories of the myriad players in the room as much as it focuses on the outcome of the game itself.
Benson Boone - American Heart CD/LP (Warner Records)
Benson Boone is quickly soaring to global pop stardom on the heels of a breakout year in 2024. His brand new album American Heart builds upon that success and expands his sonic landscape, creating a project that feels both larger-than-life and sincere at its core. Boasting lead single "Sorry I'm Here For Someone Else" in addition to standout tracks like "Mystical Magical," "I Wanna Be The One You Call," "Young American Heart," and the deeply personal "Momma Song," American Heart sees Benson hone in on compelling narratives and a rock-tinged, 70s pop sound that delivers a sense of nostalgia while feeling fresh and inventive. [Limited edition red, white & blue marble vinyl.]
Carcass - Torn Arteries LP (Nuclear Blast)
Carcass's ability to intricately dissect the innards of death metal, and display them for us to sonically understand has been their point of excellence for over three decades. Most will find that the only real struggle when indulging in TORN ARTERIES is fighting the desire to start it over the second it finishes. It covers substantial new ground for a band with such a reputation, while still retaining that addictive, time honored Carcass sound that has come to represent the face of true death metal. [Limited edition translucent lime color vinyl.]
Loyle Carner - Hopefully LP (Republic)
Loyle Carner’s Hopefully! is a luminous, deeply personal exploration of fatherhood, identity, and artistic reinvention, marking the south London rapper’s most tender and experimental work yet. Building upon the introspection of Hugo (2022), this record takes listeners into Carner’s emerging domestic world. [Limited edition crystal clear vinyl.]
Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer - Different Rooms CD/LP (International Anthem)
Different Rooms sees the return of LA electronic duo Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer (collectively recorded for Beyonce, Makaya McCraven, Ariana Grande) on their second LP, following the lauded 2022 "Recordings from the Åland Islands" and 2024's collaboration with Ariel Kalma. Standout track "Long and Short Delays" features dense synthesis work from Chiu and layered string arrangements from Honer, expertly mixed into a swirl of a sonic experience.
The Diasonics - Oriole b/w Chickadee 7” (Record Kicks)
Cinematic funk visionaries The Diasonics drop a new disco-funk 45 vinyl with two killer tracks tailor made for DJs and cinematic funk fans. Only 500 copies pressed wordwide, instant collector’s item.
Dorio - Super Love 3 LP (Earth Libraries)
Dorio is the musical outlet of Texas multi-instrumentalist and producer Chad Doriocourt with songwriting partner Rachel Rascoe. Super Love 3 is the project’s third studio album. Colorfully elegant indie pop production carries throughout the LP, Dorio applied his affinity for orchestrally-inspired live instrumentation to the cut-and-paste methodology employed across hip-hop and dance music. Aligning those influences, Flood Magazine recently described Dorio’s sound as “an upbeat form of bubblegum-pop and hip-hop percussion that recalls the recent neo-psych output of Stones Throw Records.” The songwriter brought in drummer CJ Eliasen to rework Dorio’s own version of a funky 90s-does-70s beat. Such reverse engineering occurred in his Austin-based home studio, where Dorio first met CJ while recording and producing other bands’ music. RIYL: Stereolab, Broadcast, Peel Dream Magazine.
Eartheater & Shygirl - Shark Brain b/w Dolphin 7” (Chemical X)
Glow-in-the-dark 7" vinyl, lenticular cover artwork. Critically acclaimed producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Eartheater teams up with London's breakout star Shygirl for new double single "Shark Brain / Dolphin." Despite the longtime friendship and collaborative relationship between the two luminaries, this marks the first official collaborative release from the pair outside of remixes. The concept of "Shark Brain / Dolphin" came together due to the symmetry of the human anatomy with that of sharks and dolphins, which is reflected on the stunning lenticular cover artwork. "Shark Brain" was produced by Eartheater alongside Andy Morin of Death Grips, while "Dolphin" was produced by Eartheater alongside Tony Seltzer and Inef Coupe.
S.G. Goodman - Planting By the Signs CD/LP (Slough Water Records)
S.G. Goodman returns from the Western Kentucky bottomland with her latest full-length album, Planting by the Signs, on her very own Slough Water Records via Thirty Tigers. Composed of songs inspired by love, loss, reconciliation, and the aforementioned ancient practice - how planting a garden, or weaning a baby, or getting a haircut are best timed in accordance with the cycle of the moon. A concept diametrically opposed to the tech-obsessed, profit margin-driven mania swirling around us. Through exploring themes related to planting by the signs, Goodman hopes to help herself and others reconcile this jarring disconnect, as well to pass along the story of the practice. Eleven tracks highlighted by the critically-acclaimed and award-winning artist's singular voice and her penchant for juxtaposing vulnerable folk music with punchy rock 'n roll, replete with chiming guitars, ethereal atmospherics, and her DIY ethos. Goodman provides a timely reminder that the only way forward is together, and that we must always take into account humanity's dependence on and responsibility to the natural world. [Indie exclusive red vinyl.]
Haggus - Destination Extinction CD/LP (Tankcrimes)
Ski masks. Pitch shifters. Debaucherous live shows. This is what you think of when you think of mincecore. And when you think of mincecore, you think of HAGGUS. Wasting no time at all, HAGGUS abruptly conquered the DIY grind and punk scenes quickly becoming the ugly face of an entire sub-genre they call mincecore. With a meticulously crafted blend of crust punk and goregrind, they layer almost-poppy guitar riffs with repulsive, pitch shifted vocals – and there isn’t a band on the planet that can replicate their infectiously brutal sound. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]
Haim - I Quit CD/2xLP (Columbia)
HAIM's highly anticipated fourth studio album, I quit. The 15-track album was written primarily by HAIM and Rostam Batmanglij, with production by Batmanglij and Danielle Haim. [Indie exclusive translucent blue vinyl.]
Hotline TNT - Raspberry Moon CD/LP (Third Man Records)
Following the release of their triumphant breakthrough album 'Cartwheel' in 2023 on Third Man Records, which gained widespread critical acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork (8.4/10 Best New Music) and Stereogum (Top 10 Albums of 2023 - "riveting, restless shoegaze packed with massive hooks"), NYC's Hotline TNT are back with their best album yet. [Indie exclusive ‘sapphire slush puppy’ (I.e. blueish) color vinyl.]
Elijah Johnson - Stupid Soul LP (Strolling Bones Records)
Stupid Soul is either Elijah Johnston’s 4th record or his 7th, depending on who you ask, but possibly the first you’ve heard. The logical next step in a career of slow burns, Stupid Soul is neither a record of morose self-reflection nor a frenetic series of genre experiments, settling into a comfortable steady pace: a record built to fit like a glove. Performed by a small team including Johnston’s brother, manager, and long-time producer, the record is full of small wonders and live band energy, the sound of four close-knit collaborators in pursuit of something timeless.
Jess Kerber - From Way Down Here LP (Felte Records)
Nashville's Jess Kerber first picked up a guitar at the age of 12, and her precocious drive to experiment with different tunings and picking styles - influenced by kindred spirits like Joni Mitchell and Susan Tedeschi - led to the development of a unique sonic palette and authentic, personal approach to songwriting. Inspired equally by her upbringing in Louisiana and studies at Boston's Berklee College of Music, debut album From Way Down Here highlights the dynamism and depth of her gorgeous voice and thoughtful, humanistic lyrics, as well as the refined intricacy of her guitar playing. [Limited edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]
L’Eclair - Cloud Drifter CD/LP (Innovative Leisure)
Growing up in Bulgaria in the late 1990s, brothers Stef and Yavor Lilov were shaped in a myriad of unseen ways by the centuries-old folk music that filtered through their daily lives. It helped mold their creative spirit and inspired them to begin making noise together at a young age, and that unique and intuitive creative alchemy has been a foundation of guitarist/keyboardist Stef and drummer Yavor’s band L’Eclair since they formed it in their adopted home of Switzerland a decade ago. After spending the past two years meticulously crafting Cloud Drifter, their fourth album and debut for revered U.S. label Innovative Leisure, L’Eclair is for the first time now led by the Lilov siblings. The result is an album seamlessly melding modernity with nostalgia and played with a robotic tightness that remains deeply human.
Lots of Hands - Into A Pretty Room LP (Fire Talk)
A collage of reworked demos, freewheeling session standouts, and swatches of instrumental electronics, into a pretty room offers a touching rumination of grief and loss, growing up and letting go. Billy Woodhouse and Elliot Dryden, the core duo behind Lots of Hands, first connected in a Newcastle school music program at age 16. Following years of cultivating a dedicated fanbase across 3 self-released records, into a pretty room marks the duo's first truly collaborative effort. [Limited edition green vinyl.]
Matmos - Metallic Life Review LP (Thrill Jockey)
Metallic Life Review is the sound of two people who have collected field recordings of metal objects from around the world for years of their lives together, collaging their magpie hoard into rhythmic patterns, sometimes writing melodies and basslines, but sometimes just letting sound be sound. Patient gathering yields to ADHD editing. Painstakingly made but blink and you’ll miss it. Is it music or is it noise? It is without a doubt exceptionally beautiful music wrought from metal detritus. By employing the strong contrast between a harsh industrial clatter-fest and a sweeter melodic dimension that acts as a deliberate counterforce, Matmos created an album that is utterly delightful. [Indie exclusive translucent blue vinyl.]
James McMurtry - Black Dog & The Wandering Boy CD/LP (New West)
When his father died in 2021, James McMurtry went through his effects and discovered a rough pencil sketch of himself as a child. “I knew it was of me, but I didn’t realize who drew it. I had to ask my stepmom, and she said it looked like Ken Kesey’s work back in the ‘60s.” The Merry Pranksters—Kesey’s roving band of hippie activists and creators—stopped by often to visit Larry McMurtry, his wife Faye, and his very young son James. He held on to that drawing as he worked on a new album, The Black Dog & the Wandering Boy, his eleventh. It’s a collection of rough-hewn story-songs and richly drawn characters sketches that have elements of Americana—rolling guitars, barroom harmonies, traces of banjo and harmonica—but sound too sly and smart for such a generalized category.
Sally Anne Morgan - Second Circle: The Horizon LP (Thrill Jockey)
Sally Anne Morgan is an artist and naturalist in the purest senses. Raised on old time and Appalachian folk traditions, Morgan’s artistry embodies the rich life of the communities and natural world she surrounds herself with. Based in Alexander, NC on the edge of Appalachia and the Pisgah National Forest, Sally’s blend of traditional technique and distinctly modern compositional approach are infused with the sounds of her garden, surrounding pastures, forests and mountains. “I wanted to capture the feeling of walking outside and just encountering organic nature sounds, some with patterns, some with a randomness that also verges on its own kind of pattern,” notes Morgan. “Old time fiddle music is the seed that grew into the part of my brain that makes music, and everything I do somehow seems to come back to that” she concludes. Abstraction in pursuit of free exploration of that which can’t be put into words balancing with an intentional structure of song lies at the album’s core.
Lukas Nelson - American Romance CD/LP (Sony Nashville)
Lukas Nelson came of age in the dives and diners of this country and his itinerant life showed him America as few others get to see it. Nelson ponders his relationship this country with all its joy and heartbreak on American Romance, his first solo album. Recorded by Grammy Award-winning producer Shooter Jennings, it shows the singer-songwriter expanding his sound while doubling down on the fundamentals of his artistry. “It’s been a long and inspiring journey in the band,” he says. “This is an opportunity to experiment with some new colors in the palette.”
Odesza - Music To Refine To: A Remix Companion to Severance LP (Foreign Family Collective)
Three-time Grammy-nominated duo ODESZA have teamed up with executive producer Ben Stiller to extend the world of his hit Apple TV+ show Severance across a new 7-track EP, entitled "Music To Refine To: A Remix Companion to Severance" adding their unique signature to the unmistakable sounds of Theodore Shapiro’s Emmy Award-winning compositions. [Limited edition ‘pearl sunrise’ translucent vinyl.]
Joshua Redman - Words Fall Short CD/LP (Blue Note)
Joshua Redman's second Blue Note album, Words Fall Short, is a collection of original compositions that serves as the introduction of his new quartet, featuring pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris and drummer Nazir Ebo, which formed as a working band for the world tour behind the saxophonist's label debut - where are we. As the quartet performed steadily on the road, Redman felt a vibe developing and was inspired to bring them into the studio to record a set of music he had composed during the pandemic that embraced the shifting moods of wistfulness, sadness and resolve. The album also features special guest appearances by saxophonist Melissa Aldana, trumpeter Skylar Tang and vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa.
Sleigh Bells - Bunky Becky Birthday Boy CD/LP (Mom+Pop)
Sleigh Bells - comprised of producer/guitarist Derek Miller and singer Alexis Krauss - release their seventh album, Bunky Becky Birthday Boy. A celebration of the pair's unbelievable friendship, the album also greets a brand-new (and every bit as explosive) chapter of Sleigh Bells. [Limited edition translucent pink & blue splatter vinyl.]
Suzzallo - Quiet Year CD/LP (Suzzallo)
Suzzallo (pronounced Süe-zahh-Lōw) is a new Seattle based rock band fronted by Rocky Votolato. After the devastating loss of his child in a tragic car accident, Votolato created an entire new world inside of aggressive rock songs that transmute extreme grief into something healing and beautiful. Suzzallo's debut album "The Quiet Year" is an explosive eulogy filled with cathartic alt-rock anthems that bring the energy of the 90's back to life.
Thee Sacred Souls - Somebody Knew b/w We Don’t Have To Be Alone 7” (Penrose Records)
Thee modern masters of sweet soul return with two killer 6/8 ballads that explore the messy particulars of love lost and love found. The moody, blues forward "Somebody Knew" tackles the former as singer Josh Lane bares his soul with a tale about a sensitive subject many of us can relate to—processing the shame and pain associated with losing the one you love to another. Tracked during the sessions for Got a Story to Tell and a stand out in their live set, "We Don't Have to Be Alone" is a gorgeous, floaty ballad that deals with two folks coming to terms with the fact that it's ok to find comfort and joy in love at a provisional level.
Tropical F*ck Storm - Fairyland Codex CD/LP (Fire Records)
Genre-bending Tropical F*ck Storm present their highly anticipated fourth album, ‘Fairyland Codex,’ on their new label home Fire Records. Recorded with co-producer Michael Beach at the band’s Dodgy Brothers studio in Nagambie, Australia, the songs on ‘Fairyland Codex’ immerse us in the chaos of a fateful landslide, picking out the characters that litter the impending collapse of society. Acidic, acerbic, anarchic; Tropical F*ck Storm's command of wordplay, undercut by snarling guitars, pulsing rhythms, and explosive salvos, populates a hinterland between light and dark. The vocal interplay between Liddiard and the soaring harmonies of Kitschin and Dunn creates a teetering balancing act that’s intensified by the frantic narratives that evolve from their collective psyche. ]Limited edition magenta vinyl.]
U.S. Girls - Scratch It CD/LP (Matador)
When Meg Remy, the visionary behind U.S. Girls, got an offer to play a festival in Hot Springs, Arkansas in early 2024, she enlisted Nashville-based friend Dillon Watson (Savoy Motel, Jack Name) to assemble a one-time band for the occasion. The show went so well that she decided to ride that energy right back to where the impromptu band initially rehearsed, in Music City, kickstarting the journey toward Scratch It. In ten days, Remy and her band — Watson on guitar, Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs, Loretta Lynn) on bass, Domo Donoho on drums, Jo Schornikow and Tina Norwood on keys and harmonica legend Charlie McCoy (Elvis, Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison) — recorded Scratch It live.
Venturing - Ghostholding LP (Deadair)
New album from Venturing, side project of Jane Remover. "A new album by the artist aka Jane Remover is full of sprawling, fearsome beauty, both compositionally tighter and texturally coarser than their past forays into rock" - Pitchfork. [Limited edition baby pink with black splatter vinyl.]
Kelsey Waldon - Every Ghost LP (Oh! Boy)
There's no real way around it: Kelsey Waldon's new album, Every Ghost, is heavy stuff. Across it's nine songs, she confronts addiction, grief, generational trauma, and even herself - and comes through it stronger and at peace."There's a lot of hard-earned healing on this record," Waldon says. As she sings in the album's title track and first song, "Ghost of Myself," she's put in the work not only to better herself and leave behind bad habits, but also to learn to love her past selves. Compassion is a throughline on Every Ghost, whether it's for Waldon herself, for the person in the throes of addiction in "Falling Down," or for a suffering world in "Nursery Rhyme." The people in Waldon's songs aren't irredeemable - they're struggling.

MJ Lenderman / Wednesday - Guttering EP (Julia’s War)
In 2021 Douglas Dulgarian of the band TAGABOW issued the very first cassette release on his brand new label project Julia's War Recordings. It was a collaborative EP by friends Jake and Karly called Guttering, issued under their pseudonyms MJ Lenderman & Wednesday. Upon it's initial release, Stereogum put it perfectly when they said that "Guttering's six self-recorded tracks present some of the best aspects of both artists' work, setting sighing harmonies against dense power chords and occasionally seasoning the mix with some twangy lead guitar." Fast forward to 2025, MJ Lenderman and Wednesday are two of the biggest names in indie rock. Wednesday had a break out 2023 with the release of their excellent Dead Oceans debut 'Rat Saw God', which landed on a numerous year end lists. In 2024 MJ Lenderman released his Anti debut with 'Manning Fireworks', which catapulted him into indie stardom. A string of sold out tour dates and an equally impressive list of year end accolades followed the album's release.
