Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Barry Can’t Swim - Loner LP (Ninja Tune)

Following a meteoric rise over the past couple of years, 2025 will see Barry Can't Swim cement his place at the upper echelons of dance music with the release of sophomore album Loner. The album title sums up the philosophy which Barry went into the album making process with. Despite his gregarious presence on and off the stage, Barry himself has always been an incredibly thoughtful and introverted person. It's only now, after the last several years of pushing himself, that he's been able to embrace this side of his personality and present it to the world. Anticipation could not be higher for this album, Barry is not only the biggest breakthrough artist in electronic music over the past two years, he's one of the most in-demand artists across all genres on the planet right now. [Indie exclusive gold with red ink spot vinyl.]

Biosphere - The Way of Time LP (AD 93)

Biosphere's album The Way Of Time takes loose inspiration from Elizabeth Madox Roberts' novel The Time Of Man, sampling Joan Lorring's voice from the 1951 radio play adaptation of the novel. Biosphere's signature ambient loops, soothing arctic synths and melodies combine with Lorring's sweet, wistful and deep-south wonderings to create a record that is both deeply human and searching.

Gina Birch - Trouble LP (Third Man Records)

Trouble is a patchwork of sorts: it's 11 songs are not only eclectic in genre, but play like stitched-together vignettes, fly-on-the-wall scenes in which Gina describes meeting a stranger on a train, or a flare up with her teenage daughter, or the nostalgia of driving past a certain part of your neighborhood that's been unchanged for as long as you can remember. It's the politics of the everyday, a work that is feminist not because of slogans or placards, but because it's a candid portrait of a female artist simply existing. [Indie exclusive ‘brush stroke’ cream with white vinyl.]

Brighde Chaimbeul - Sunwise LP (Tak:Til / Glitterbeat)

"This record follows the embrace of winter time; the closing in of darkness, the cold, the pull to turn inward. But also, the customs of the season, and gathering for the ceilidh: songs and stories told round the fire; where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur." Thus, smallpipes player Brìghde Chaimbeul introduces her third album, a release which comes after two years of incredible acclaim for its predecessor Carry Them With Us, which was celebrated by such diverse places as The Guardian (Best Folk Album Of 2023 #7) and The Quietus (Best Albums of 2023 #13). Sunwise is more a solo record than Carry Them With Us, steeped in folklore and tradition but also embracing minimalism, experimentation and the eternal presence of the drone. Her love for this music, these traditions and shared stories, shines through everything she does: "It's a music and language that has survived so much and for so long -- it's the music of people. It's music of the land. And I think it's extremely relevant to hold on to that and learn from that in current times."

Clipse - Let God Sort ‘Em Out CD/LP (Roc Nation)

In the 15+ years since Clipse's last album hit the shelves of record stores, the music world has been upended several times over. Through it all, enthusiasm for the duo from Virginia never waned. 'Let God Sort 'Em Out' - Clipse's new independent release in partnership with Roc Nation Distribution - is one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent memory, a fact that underlines the singular talent and lasting influence of Pusha-T and Malice. [Indie exclusive clear vinyl.]

Brent Cobb - Ain’t Rocked in a While CD/LP (Ol’ Buddy Records)

Channeling his ear-ringing live show, Ain't Rocked... is the first album from Cobb to be recorded and billed alongside his trusted touring band, The Fixin's. And for Cobb, it marks a return-to-form for an artist who's collaborated with hard-rocking Texas band Whiskey Myers and country-rock favorite The Steel Woods. - This album is a point of reference. It's not that I've never rocked before. Just ain't rocked in a while... When I'm with The Fixin's we sorta put on a rock show too and really... that's nothing new. We recorded live straight to tape for this project. [Indie exclusive white vinyl.]

Leroi Conroy - A Tiger’s Tale CD/LP (Colemine)

Steeped in equal parts golden age hip-hop sensibilities and lost 60s and 70s film scores, the debut LP from Leroi Conroy weighs in heavy and has been years in the making. The first two tracks from the album were released in 2017 as a 45, which were sampled in the years that followed by DJ Premier, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Macklemore, Phantogram, and more. But after it's release, Terry Cole aka Leroi Conroy spent much of his time growing his indie soul label Colemine Records and producing records for others (Okonski, Parlor Greens, Wesley Bright, Black Market Brass, Kendra Morris, Rudy de Anda, Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio, Andrew Gabbard) as opposed to his own. Now, eight years after many of the rhythm tracks were put to tape on the trusted Tascam 388, Leroi Conroy's debut LP, A Tiger's Tale, will be released. The album is conceptualized as a hypothetical soundtrack to an alternate telling of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. The narrative here being man's quest to tame and bend nature to his will... and nature's response. The album is a mix of triumphant instrumental scores alongside absolutely grim, dark, and at times dissonant moody tracks. The underlying element of hip-hop's sample culture is obvious throughout and there's no doubt many of these tracks will be flipped in the years to come. Sonically, the record fits right in the cut alongside many other Colemine instrumental artists: dirty lo-fi drums, blaring horns, wah guitar, Hammond organ, and plenty of cinematic sprinklings like flute, nylon guitar, and vibraphone. Drums are courtesy of Cole's longtime collaborator Rob Houk and are truly the backbone of the record. And with a couple of features from Coleman artists Kelly Finnigan and Jimmy James, the record is truly a family affair. [Limited edition pink with blue swirl vinyl.]

Facta - Gulp LP (Wisdom Teeth)

Facta returns to Wisdom Teeth with Gulp: a zippy, hi-def mini-album full of scrambled vocals, blown-out basslines, dripping synths and spring-loaded grooves that together map out his playfully psychedelic corner of contemporary club music. The record brings together a range of the producer's distinct creative strands into a sharp, cohesive whole, synthesizing influences of '00s minimal, tech house, UK soundsystem music, ambient electronica, dub and more in a way that feels effortless and personal. Generative vocal hooks melt and warp into strange fluid forms, while synths stretch, detune, bend and dissolve into space before snapping back into shape again. Keyboards mirror human vocal formants, forming melodies that feel at once organic and alien. Basslines warp and distort, as if being re-molded out of different synthetic properties. Across the record there's a commitment to expressing simple or familiar ideas in new and unexpected ways, whilst experimentations and innovations are presented clearly and intuitively.

Hannah Frances - Keeper of the Shepherd LP (Fire Talk Records)

Amidst peeling birch, sundried and fragrant husks, a flooded riverbed, and a solemn, wet, echoing cave, Hannah Frances returns with a dense and daring album, ‘Keeper of the Shepherd.’ This album is a rebirth in every sense of the word, showcasing Frances’ virtuosic songwriting, arrangement, and musicality, while displaying a deep and churning emotional vulnerability. A classically trained vocalist and self-taught guitarist with virtuosic dynamism, there is no singular way Hannah grips us with her complex guitar work and storytelling. Through profoundly cutting lyricism, masterful fingerpicked polyrhythms, and a colossal voice, Frances’ unorthodox sound melds avant-folk, progressive rock, and jazz. NPR's Ann Powers calls Frances “a stunning vocalist and songwriter.” [Limited edition birch white vinyl.]

Giveon - Beloved CD/LP (Epic)

BELOVED is the highly anticipated second full-length studio album from seven-time GRAMMY®-nominee and multiplatinum-selling R&B singer-songwriter, GIVĒON. With his smash single “TWENTIES,” and “RATHER BE,” the singer continues to show his growth, both as an introspective songwriter and an empathetic human being.

Gwenno - Utopia CD/LP (Heavenly)

Utopia, Gwenno's fourth solo album, is an extraordinary exploration of her continuously evolving self. If the singer regards her first three solo records 2014's y Dydd Olaf, 2018's Le Kov and 2022's Tresor as "childhood records", rooted in her upbringing, her parents, her formative identity, then Utopia captures a time of self-determination and experimentation. These are songs of discovery, of the years between being someone's daughter and becoming someone's wife and someone's mother. They range from floor-fillers to piano ballads, via contributions from Cate Le Bon and H. Hawkline, and encompass William Blake, a favorite Edrica Huws poem, and the Number 73 bus. It is her finest work to date. [Limited edition pink vinyl.]

Matt Jencik & Midwife - Never Die CD/LP (Relapse)

Despite the outright denial in its title, death is present in every one of the songs on Never Die, the collaborative album from Midwife's Madeline Johnston and Matt Jencik (of Implodes, Don Caballero, and Slint’s live band). Following a number of ambient drone instrumental albums, Jencik felt the need to set himself a new creative challenge: to write vocal-heavy songs. He worked on them alone in his basement, recording directly to a four-track cassette. He sent those demos to a different collaborator to tinker with before that partnership eventually dissolved. Then, he thought of Madeline: the way her voice tended to glower in her songs, as well as her commitment to minimalism, which fell squarely within the project’s aesthetic and spiritual impulses. Never Die offers a calm confrontation with the dour inevitability that bookends our lives. [Limited edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Kokoroko - Tuff Times Never Last CD/LP (Brownswood)

'Tuff Times Never Last' is a spirited and vibrant collection of songs serving as an optimistic reminder to tightly hold and embrace the many dualities that occur in life. Over the course of the 11-song suite, the album explores togetherness, community, sensuality, childhood, loss and above all perseverance. Initially drawing inspiration from a viral social media meme, co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth said of the title's origins and meaning: "It's from the meme but it's also true stuff. Although we're reflecting on joy and celebration, you realize that a lot of that beauty comes out of challenges and difficulties. It felt like a natural truth that we discovered whilst writing". The accompanying artwork was painted by Luci Pina, the acclaimed illustrator whose work has been sought and commissioned by the likes of The Cut, Soho House, DICE, Apple Music and It's Nice That. Largely eschewing the afrobeat jazz of their previous work, the new album instead pulls from British R&B from the 80s, neo-soul, West African disco, bossa nova, lovers rock and funk. Sonically taking cues from the likes of Loose Ends, Don Blackman, Common, Sly & Robbie, William Onyeabor, Patrice Rushen, Ofori Amponsah and Cymande. [Indie exclusive purple vinyl.]

Nate Mercereau / Josh Johnson / Carlos Nino - Openness Trio CD/LP (Blue Note)

Openness Trio is the debut album by a unique collective comprised of guitarist and producer Nate Mercereau, saxophonist Josh Johnson, and percussionist Carlos Nin-o. Free-thinking creators who bring a depth of experience from wide-ranging collaborations with the likes of Andre 3000, Meshell Ndegeocello, Kamasi Washington, Shabaka, Jeff Parker, Makaya McCraven, and many more, the trio presents a profound musical offering born of deep communication, immersive emoting, exploration, discovery, and trust. The album is five recordings from five different sessions all around Los Angeles and Ventura county - outdoors in the hills of Ojai with a view of the Topatopa Mountains, an intimate living room setting in Elysian Park, in an Oak Tree Cathedral at the Churchill Orchard in Ojai, a Garden of Electronics in the courtyard of an Echo Park home, and a recording session under a pepper tree at Elsewhere in Topanga Canyon.

Julien Mier - Gradually LP (Lapsus Records)

Gradually, the latest album by producer and composer Julien Mier, is a sonic journey that delves into the transitions of life, identity, and the blurred boundaries between art and personal growth, reflecting an urge to break free from rigid musical genres and get closer to his most fundamental expression. The album is composed of nine tracks divided into three sections, each representing a distinct cultural and linguistic influence. The first section draws on Mier's French heritage, evoking the feeling of childhood memories bathed in a warm, nostalgic glow. This fluid, atmospheric section mirrors the soft, ever-changing air, symbolizing a time of pure, untainted intention. The second section channels the influence of Mier's childhood in a small Dutch dune village. These tracks are grounded in the hard-edged textures of electronic dance music, a genre that introduced him to a world of rhythm and movement. The final section dives into the exploration of the world beyond familiar borders. Mier's relocation from the Netherlands to Australia in 2016 is reflected in these pieces, which grapple with the contrast and complexity of different cultures and environments. The music here is marked by tension, conflict, and the erosion of once-solid forms -- symbolic of the digital and ecological storms that shape our modern existence.

Amina Claudine Myers - Solace of the Mind LP (Red Hook)

Solace of the Mind is a profoundly lyrical solo album from pianist, organist, vocalist, and newly minted NEA Jazz Master Amina Claudine Myers. This extraordinary recording, a follow-up to her critically acclaimed duo with Wadada Leo Smith (Central Park's Mosaic of Reservoir, Lake, Paths and Gardens, released via Red Hook in 2024), stands as a testament to the uncompromising vision of a seasoned leader in creative music. Available on transparent vinyl.

Tami Neilson - Neon Cowgirl LP (Outside Music)

The Neon Cowgirl, towering over Broadway in Nashville like the patron saint of heartbreak, watched Tami Neilson grow up. Basking in her glow, Tami walked wide-eyed into the Ryman Auditorium as a 16-year-old - and she dreamt of taking her place on that stage ever since. After spending half a year on a coast-to-coast tour of North America with her young family in a 40-foot motorhome, Tami returned to New Zealand to record a collection of songs inspired by her pilgrimage. This lovelorn letter written on 4 wheels over blacktop became Neon Cowgirl. From the barnburner "Borrow My Boots"- a celebration of sisterhood written and performed with Ashley McBryde and Shelly Fairchild featuring guitar-prodigy Grace Bowers - to the dreamy duet of the title track featuring Neil Finn, to Tami's soaring ode to Roy Orbison "Foolish Heart" and the smoky "You're Gonna Fall" recorded with JD McPherson, Neon Cowgirl leaves no emotion unexamined, no stone unturned. [Indie exclusive neon pink vinyl.]

Gigi Perez - At the Beach, In Every Life CD/LP (Island)

Singer-songwriter-producer Gigi Perez releases her highly anticipated, self-produced debut album, At the Beach, In Every Life. The passionate, poetic, and powerful body of work centers around themes of grief, love, faith and religion. Notably, the album processes the aftermath of losing her beloved sister Celene, immortalized on songs like "Fable," and the love that ultimately helps her through her grief, as heard on the breakout hit, "Sailor Song." Gigi is ready to invite everyone behind the curtain on her debut release.

Plunky & Oneness of Juju - Made Through Ritual CD/LP (Strut)

First international album in over 30 years by the Afro-jazz legends Plunky & Oneness of Juju from Richmond, Virginia. Cross-generational collaboration between Oneness bandleader Plunky Branch, his son Jamiah Branch and son of Black Fire founder, Jamal Gray. Exclusive cover artwork by Ivorian artist Maxime Manga.

Saagara - 3 LP (Glitterbeat)

The third installment of this acclaimed collaboration between Polish producer/multi-instrumentalist Wacław Zimpel and four virtuosic musicians from the Carnatic musical tradition of southern India: percussionists Giridhar Udupa (ghatam), Aggu Baba (khanjira) and K Raja (thavil) and violinist Mysore N. Karthik. It's a buzzing juxtaposition of dense Indian rhythms and pulsating electronic patterns, an album of deeply transformative compositions that navigate tradition and experimentation as they move towards the universal. The Saagara project was first initiated during a jam session in Poland more than a decade ago by Zimpel and one of the most prominent Indian percussionists Gitridhar Udupa (ghatam). With the 1976 album Shakti with John McLaughlin in mind, particularly its virtuosic blending of Western melodic-rhythmic concepts with Carnatic ones, Zimpel wanted to create something that would continue that ethos but with an individualized approach. His deep fascination with minimalism, tinged with electronics, helped shape the project's concept as did the grooves and sounds of Carnatic music's most prominent instruments.

Surprise Chef - Bully Ball b/w Consulate Case 7” (Big Crown)

Surprise Chef press two standouts from their latest album Superb on a 7" for a straight fire two-sider. The A side "Bully Ball" kicks in the door like the fellas have something to prove... Thundering drums start the affair then a haunting piano riff, guitars, bass, and glockenspiel trade places pushing through the speakers and mesmerizing the listener. The B side "Consulate Case" is another turn it up to the red banger that is sure to fill the dance floor. The rhythm section is full blast right out of the gate and the synth teases in a lush piano part that puts this one over the top and commands your attention.

The Swell Season (Glen Hansard) - Forward CD/LP (Masterkey Sounds)

The Swell Season is back. After reconvening for a limited number of sold-out shows, including Radio City Music Hall in New York, the duo returns with new music. A studio session that started out as an effort to create a couple of new songs for tour, ended up yielding a full-length album, fittingly titled "Forward" their first full length album in 16 years after the huge global success of their Oscar winning turn in the film "Once".

Ketch Secor - Story the Crow Told Me CD/LP (Equal Housing Op Records)

Ketch Secor is a merry ringmaster, passionate professor, modern Beat, and unassuming virtuoso. 'The Story the Crow Told Me' is his solo debut album, tracing the journey from street busker to founding Old Crow Medicine Show, now a Grammy-winning, Opry-member band behind the double-platinum hit "Wagon Wheel." Produced by Jody Stevens, the album features Marty Stuart, Molly Tuttle, Willie Watson, Jaren Johnston, and an ode to Nashville with help from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. [Indie exclusive blue vinyl. Tarta Relena - És pregunta LP (Latency Recordings)

The second album from Catalan vocal duo Tarta Relena. Founded by Helena Ros Redon and Marta Torrella i Martínez, Tarta Relena explores the rich vocal traditions of the Mediterranean, singing in languages such as Classical Greek, Italian, Spanish, Latin, Catalan, Ladino, and more. Their music blends sacred and secular influences, drawing inspiration from flamenco, lyrical song, traditional music, and electronic experimentation. The album is a conceptual journey through fate, knowledge, and the struggle to reconcile our future selves with present realities. Influenced by Mediterranean folk, Georgian laments, and the mystic works of 12th-century visionary Hildegard von Bingen, Tarta Relena crafts a vibrant sonic world where the past and future converge.

Wet Leg - Moisturizer CD/LP (Domino)

Moisturizer is the bold, second album from Wet Leg, the Isle of Wight five-piece founded by Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers. Joined by Ellis Durand, Henry Holmes, and Joshua Mobaraki, Wet Leg has spent the past few years on the road, evolving into a feral, electrifying live force. This new record captures that energy, delivering a sound that's tighter, bolder, and more self-assured, yet still brimming with the same quick wit and raw, unrefined energy. - Isolated in a remote house in the countryside, moisturizer was written in a creative frenzy, diving into themes of obsession and all-consuming love. While their 2022 debut earned Grammy wins and chart-topping success, Moisturizer brings the bite: brash guitars, heavy beats, and a fearless devotion to feeling everything-all at once. [Indie exclusive clear vinyl.]

The Wildmans - Longtime Friend LP (New West)

The Wildmans are a brother sister led band. The tale of this duo’s journey starts early when sister and brother Aila and Eli Wildman were at the mere ages of 5 and 7. The siblings were born and raised in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, a veritable hotbed of old-time, bluegrass and all ilks of mountain music. The Wildmans first started touring locally with their mom Deb on bass under the name of the Blackberries. As they entered their teens, the siblings branched out to form their own band with a host of different bandmates and Eli sharing equal time on the guitar, eventually recording their first self-titled release and performing at beloved festivals throughout the area. As soon as they were old enough to drive they have been venturing across the country, delighting new audiences and taking home first place in band competitions at Freshgrass in North Adams, Massachusetts, and the storied Rockygrass in Lyons, Colorado, while simultaneously honing their chops at the Berklee College of Music. Along the way they have shared the stage with Billy Strings, Bela Fleck, the Steep Canyon Rangers, Oliver Wood, Sierra Hull, Molly Tuttle, Dori Freeman and many others.

Limited edition.

Fear Factory - Concrete LP (Real Gone Music)

This 2002 album was the last of L.A. band Fear Factory's amazing run of albums for the Roadrunner Records, but it was actually the first. Huh? Let us explain-or better yet, you can read the two sets of liner notes that accompany the package. Briefly, prior to signing with Roadrunner, Fear Factory recorded an entire album in 1990 with producer Ross Robinson. The band and Robinson had a falling out, but, ironically, it was a cassette recording of that album that got them signed to Roadrunner. Once Fear Factory blew up with the release of 1995's Demanufacture, Roadrunner acquired the rights to the album from Robinson, but waited to release it until 2002, when the band went on hiatus and left the label. But more interesting than the story behind the music is the music itself. For Fear Factory fans, Concrete is an absolute treasure trove-half of the songs are new, while the other half showed up in rerecorded form on their debut album Soul of a New Machine (and especially sharp-eared Fear Factory fans will notice bits and pieces of the new songs that showed up on subsequent albums). Above all, though, Concrete sets it in stone that very early on, Fear Factory had perfected the heavy verse-melodic chorus formula followed by so many nu-metal bands to come. For its first-ever LP release, we've remastered Concrete for it's pressing in gun metal grey vinyl.

Home Is Where - I Became Birds CD/LP (Father/Daughter)

I Became Birds is a dizzying tightrope act, dancing between intimate melodies and gently progressive songwriting flourishes with a dexterity that belies their sonic base of aggressive, throat-shredding emotive hardcore. Record Player - Free Your Mind LP (Now-Again)

Previously unreleased disco and boogie from Dayton, Ohio's Record Player, collecting both sides of their rare 45 with more killer music recorded in the late '70s, unavailable to the public until now. In 1979, Record Player privately pressed and issued a solitary 45 on their Gem City Records imprint in Dayton, Ohio. Though they had recorded a host of other songs, and were on the verge of signing to a major label, their trajectory stalled and the band splintered by the early 1980s. In the early 2000s, Record Player principle Charles Jackson surfaced with their unreleased songs. Now, the entirety of their oeuvre is presented here as Free Your Mind, and their story detailed in words by Bret Sjerven. This is a special release for the team at Now-Again and will be perfect for any fan of the deep disco scene that birthed the likes of Luther Davis, Edge of Daybreak, Tomorrow's People, Split Decision Band, and so many others issued by Now-Again, Numero Group, and other like minded labels.

Harvey Scales - Trying to Survive CD/2xLP (Numero)

From his early-'60s days as hip shaker Twistin' Harvey to his late-'70s nights on the light up dance floor in search of a "Disco Lady," Harvey Scales survived scrapes with the pop charts, bankrupt record companies, walk outs, sit ins, strikes, price hikes, lay offs, and under table payoffs over a 40 year career. Compiled here for the first time are Scales' Cuca and Magic Touch recordings, 27 slabs of cracker jack R&B, stomping northern soul, divorce-ridden deep soul, feverish funk, and hustling disco spread across 2 LPs and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket.. Bill Dahl's in depth notes document the entire sordid affair, with dozens of period photos and ephemeral bits illustrating the accompanying 20 page book. So necessary.

It's considered a major influence on bands like U2 and Sonic Youth. This 180g black vinyl edition captures every detail, bringing the album's brilliance to life. This brick & mortar exclusive reissue is part of Rhino’s Hi Fidelity series, newly mastered by Kevin Gray, with additional notes and tip-on jacket. Limited edition.

Various Artists - Spiritual Jazz 18: Behind The Iron Curtain - Sounds Beyond Barriers 2CD / 2 LP (Pt. 1) / 2 LP (Pt. 2)

One of the most politically charged terms of the 20th century, the Iron Curtain was a metaphor for political and cultural division. In a post-war telegram Winston Churchill referred to the fault line that ran through Europe between East and West as "an Iron Curtain is drawn down upon their front. We do not know what is going on behind." In this two-part album, as far as jazz is concerned, Jazzman will showcase, describe and celebrate exactly what was "going on behind." The liner notes illustrate the complex and contradictory history of Soviet jazz, and the tracks chosen cover the key period of the early 1960s to the 1980s. It was during these dark years of the Cold War that the Soviet Union and its satellite states produced a number of outstanding artists playing in a variety of styles. The impact of modernism, from hard bop and Latin to modal and cool jazz, had found its way through cracks in the curtain. The deeply-felt ancestral strains of traditional European folk music were combined with the exciting new and progressive sounds of the West, and a radical, intoxicating brew was created that no amount of guns, tanks or polonium tea could overcome. Available as a 2 CD set and as two double-LP sets (Pt. 1 & Pt. 2).

Colter Wall - Imaginary Appalachia LP (RCA)

10th anniversary reissue of Colter Wall’s LP on olive green vinyl.

Will Orman
