Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Aesop Rock - Black Hole Superette CD/2xLP/Cassette (Rhymesayers)
Entirely self-produced, Black Hole Superette is one of Aesop Rock's most technically accomplished works to date. The album's intricate beats and complex structures provide the perfect backdrop for his expansive lyricism, balancing cerebral exploration with emotional depth. From the reflective 'Movie Night' and the eccentric 'Send Help' to the wistful 'Black Plums,' Aes channels the spirit of a mad scientist, experimenting with sound and concept in ways that defy the ordinary. With a stellar lineup of collaborators that includes Lupe Fiasco, Armand Hammer, Hanni El Khatib, Open Mike Eagle and Homeboy Sandman, Black Hole Superette is dense and kinetic, an album that deftly navigates between complexity and instinct. It's clear this project stands as one of Aesop Rock's most multifaceted and ambitious works yet.
Anberlin - Nevertake CD/LP (Equal Vision)
Since original vocalist Stephen Christian stepped out of the band and was replaced with Matty Mullins (Memphis May Fire), Anberlin hasn't slowed down. They released two new songs last year with Mullins on vocals on their latest full-length Vega, which united two previously-released EP's with Christian still on vocals, and then released a standlone single featuring Matty later in the year. Now, to celebrate 20 years of the band's album Never Take Friendship Personal, the guys have re-recorded the album with Mullins at the mic, releasing it under the title Nevertake.
Matt Berninger - Get Sunk CD/LP (Concord)
Matt Berninger is the vocalist and lyricist for Grammy Award-winning band The National. His songwriting has long garnered praise for it's poignant clarity, jagged-edged wit and intimately emotive melodies. His second solo album, Get Sunk, is not an autobiographical album, but the narrator is processing how he became himself. Who is he compared to the kid on that sepia-toned farm? What is his idea of happiness? What the hell are we all searching for? Get Sunk is an ode to the infinite. The others that make us who we are; the possibilities our paths can take and the abyss of both misery and bliss.
Cecilia Castleman - Cecilia Castelman CD/LP (Glassnote)
A Nashville native, Castleman cut her debut record at Henson Recording Studios in LA with Don Was, immersing herself not just in a different wavelength of creative energy but a place steeped in an entirely different musical history. “You walk in and feel a wave of energy unlike anything I’ve ever felt before,” she says of the experience. “Being in an environment like that with all of these legendary musicians like Pino Palladino, Abe Laboriel Jr., and Benmont Tench was exciting for me.” Fans of HAIM and Maggie Rogers will find plenty to love in the album, from the minimalist guitar backdrop of “It’s Alright” to the regret-tinged “You Go Thru Girls Like You Go Thru Cigarettes.” It’s a genre-blending collection, invoking modern notes of country to pair with easygoing pop melodies and fuzzy, rock-adjacent instrumentals in places.
Civic - Chrome Dipped CD/LP (ATO)
One of the most exhilarating bands in recent years, Australian band Civic reimagine proto-punk for an era of endless uncertainty. On their new album, Chrome Dipped, they push themselves and their sound even further. The title speaks to a desire to break down barriers. "I like the idea of Chrome Dipped being a mindset. It's like a casting of your character, or like an outer shell. One of the main objectives for this album was to make a drastic turn in our sound. Break the mold, melt the steel."
Miley Cyrus - Something Beautiful CD/LP (Columbia)
Miley is back with her highly anticipated 9th new studio album, Something Beautiful. Something Beautiful features 13 new tracks written and produced by Miley and executive produced by Miley and Shawn Everett.
Angel Bat Dawid & Naima Nefertari - Journey to Nabta Playa 2xLP (Spiritmuse)
Journey to Nabta Playa is a remarkable collaboration between composer and vocalist Angel Bat Dawid and interdisciplinary artist Naima Nefertari (aka Karlsson). The album is a journey in sound and sisterhood rooted in the artists’ historical exploration of an ancient stone circle in Nabta Playa, a deeply sacred astronomical site in the remote deserts of ancient Nubia. Their historical research of the site acts as a point of departure for the story this album tells and embodies more than just a musical testament; it is a spiritual and sonic journey into a lesser-told piece of history. This 180g black classic 2xLP gatefold album comes with an obi and original art by multi-disciplinary artist Nep Sidhu, a painting by Kahil El’Zabar, and it contains a beautiful booklet including texts by Neneh Cherry, Imani Mason Jordan, Tej Adeleye and Dr Adam Zanolini.
Sterling Drake - The Shape I’m In LP (Soul Step)
Sterling Drake continues his run of his rustic and authentic Country & Western music with "The Shape I'm In." It's hard to find authentic Western music these days but Sterling Drake clearly lives these songs. For fans of Charley Crockett, Colter Wall, and Wyatt Flores.
Anderson East - Worthy CD/LP (Rounder)
Anderson East is a Nashville staple and respected part of the creative community. Singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer. Recently producing work from Lukas Nelson, Allen Stone, and more, East comes full circle with Worthy; the culmination of years of creative endeavors, taking the bits that were meaningful or impactful and laying them all on top of each other. The full album is immediately arresting, spectacular from top to bottom. [Limited edition translucent sea blue vinyl.]
Foxwarren - 2 CD/LP (Anti-)
Foxwarren, the Canadian indie collective fronted by Andy Shauf, returns with their sophomore album. Joined by his fellow Canadian childhood friends and close collaborators Dallas Bryson (guitar), Darryl Kissick (bass), Avery Kissick (drums), and Colin Nealis (multi-instrumentalist), the eclectic sound of '2' - weaving genres ranging from folk to psych rock to downtempo - coincides with Shauf's curiosity and desire to incorporate a Native Instruments Maschine MSK3 sampler into his process. There is something uncanny about the feeling of these songs, the way bits recorded in different rooms amplify your attention, listening for how these layers lock. But their true connective tissue is the generous and gentle ways Shauf and the rest of Foxwarren move with melody. [Indie exclusive opaque sky blue vinyl.]
Michael Franti & Spearhead - Welcome to the Family CD/LP (Boo Boo Wax)
Every one of us has a family of origin-the one we're born into-and a family we're raised in, which, for some, like myself, may not be the same. Then there's our chosen family-friends and community-the people we gather around us, love, and trust. We also have a musical family, and when you put all of those together, they form the world family. Right now, the world is in a time of upheaval, change, and uncertainty, leading to anxiety and fear for so many. This album is about channeling those emotions-what I experience every day-and translating them into songs that others can connect with.
Garbage - Let All That We Imagine Be the Light CD/LP (BMG)
Eighth studio record from Garbage, recorded at Red Razor Sounds in Los Angeles, Butch Vig's studio Grunge Is Dead, and Shirley Manson's bedroom. The record was produced by the band and longtime engineer Billy Bush. All the hallmarks and signatures for which they are known are present here. The album is unmistakably Garbage. [Indie exclusive ‘pearl sunrise’ color vinyl.]
Joe Harvey-Whyte & Bobby Lee - Last Ride CD/LP (Curation)

The duo is well known in the UK americana scene, Bobby Lee has released three critically acclaimed records via American Primitive stalwarts Tompkins Square Records and Joe Harvey-Whyte is one of the UK’s most in demand pedal steel guitar players, known for being a member of The Hanging Stars and his session work with artists as diverse as Alabama 3, Billy Bragg and Susanne Sundfør
The Haunted - Songs of Last Resort CD/LP (Century Media)
Swedish deadly Thrash Metal pioneers and purveyors THE HAUNTED are back with a bang! A first release in 8 long years, THE HAUNTED finally return to the spotlight and re-energized with their 10th studio album.
Iglooghost - Tidal Memory Exo LP (Luckyme)
Tidal Memory Exo is the third album from Bristol-based musician Iglooghost, whose untethered music and forensically detailed worldbuilding has gained him an avid following. Made while squatting in an old MOT garage on the Kent Coast, Tidal Memory Exo sees Iglooghost take the fore as a vocalist for the first time. The album takes place in a coastal town cut off from the mainland and plagued by a never ending storm, where the locals have created their own music scene with genres such as ‘sporestyle’ and ‘tektonikore’. Like previous records, there is a seemingly endless amount of lore to delve into on Tidal Memory Exo.
Vijay Iyer - Defiant Life LP (ECM)
Anchored in the idea that, despite all obstacles, the human experience casts a net of possibilities, Defiant Life - Vijay Iyer and Wadada Leo Smith's second duo recording for ECM - proves a profound meditation on the human condition and both the suffering and resilience it entails. Recorded within two days at Lugano's Auditorio Stelio Molo, Defiant Life was produced by Manfred Eicher. "This recording session was conditioned by our ongoing sorrow and outrage over the past year's cruelties, but also by our faith in human possibility." - Vijay Iyer
Ruston Kelly - Dirt Emo Vol. II (Rounder)
Ruston Kelly has established himself as an essential voice, capable of transforming his unsparing self-examination into moments of sublime catharsis. With a lyrical sensibility that constantly shifts from candid to poetic, the South Carolina-born singer/songwriter imbues his songs with equal parts nuanced confession and punk-rock irreverence. Dirt Emo was born out of that influence. It is having peripheral elements of folk, americana, or country wrapped up in a confessional expression drawing. Vol. 2 features 5 tracks on "very sick" transparent blue color 12" vinyl with etching on Side B.
David Lowery - Fathers, Sons and Brothers CD/LP (Cooking Vinyl)
New release from the former Cracker frontman. "This is the second in a series of albums that are autobiographical. This mostly covers the period 1989 to 1996. I do this not so much to tell my story but also tell the stories of others who have shared their lives with me."
MIKE - Showbiz! 2CD/2LP (10k)
Showbiz! is the tenth solo album by MIKE, released via his own label 10k. Widespread acclaim includes Pitchfork 'Best New Music', who proclaimed it's "the young artist’s greatest accomplishment thus far". It sets a new benchmark for himself and his contemporaries as he steps into the next chapter of his career as a proven, essential voice in hip hop this decade. The record features 454 and duendita, alongside guest production from Thelonious Martin, Salami Rose Joe Louis, Jacob Rochester, Anysia Kym, Harrison (SURF GANG), ShunGu, Laron and redLee.
Minus 5 - Oar On, Penelope CD/LP (YepRoc)
Cult hero Scott McCaughey is one of rock n’ roll’s greatest comeback stories. As a member of more bands than you can name (R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows, Filthy Friends, Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 to list a few…), Scott’s underground and ever-rotating supergroup of The Minus 5 has remained one of the most enduring projects of his storied journeyman career. After Scott suffered a nearly-fatal stroke in 2017, it was under the The Minus 5 name that he put out the recordings of Stroke Manor, featuring the original songs that detail his recovery through music therapy. Oar On, Penelope! is The Minus 5’s first album of original material in over half a decade and features help from some of his most trusted allies: Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Debbi Peterson (The Bangles), Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks), Spencer Tweedy and was recorded and mixed by legendary engineer Ed Stasium (The Replacements, Ramones, Talking Heads, you name it!). [Limited edition wine dark sea swirl vinyl.]
Mt. Joy - Hope We Have Fun CD/LP (Neon Gold)
Mt. Joy delivers their most raw and reflective album yet with their fourth LP, Hope We Have Fun. Capturing the highs, lows, and unforgettable moments of life on the road with soaring melodies and soul-stirring lyrics. From the anthemic "Highway Queen" to the introspective "In The Middle," this record cements the band's place at the top of indie rock - just as they take their biggest leap yet onto arena stages across the world. [Indie exclusive clear vinyl.]
The Pine Hill Haints - Shattered Pieces of the True Cross LP (Single Lock Records)
Shattered Pieces Of The True Cross is the latest long player from Alabama's haunted artists, The Pine Hill Haints, a collection of southern psychedelic tunes captured and recorded live at the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, engineered and mixed by Single Lock founder and Grammy-winning producer/engineer Ben Tanner.
Rivers of Nihil - Rivers of Nihil CD/LP (Metal Blade)
Sixteen years and five albums after the Pennsylvania band's formation, progressive death metal progenitors Rivers of Nihil are upping the ante with their 2025 self-titled album Rivers of Nihil. Traditionally, a self-titled record can signal a return to basics and/or a fresh beginning, and in 10 powerful songs, it's clear that both those factors are in play. Founding bassist Adam Biggs became the band's new lead vocalist/bassist in 2023; the same year marked the appearance of additional guitarist Andy Thomas (ex-Black Crown Initiate), whose vocals also play prominently on Rivers of Nihil. [indie exclusive ‘adenochrome’ vinyl.]
Ty Segall - Possession CD/LP/Cassette (Drag City)
Ty hits the big sky trail of our good ol' frontier empire, discovering non-stop bangers and inspired new sonics around every bend. With lyrics co-written by longtime collaborator, filmmaker Matt Yoka, Ty's glittering rhythm arrangements move with fresh scansion, inviting in sweeps of strings and horns to further the charge righteously. You're invited too! Don't miss the trip - the country inspires awe from up on Ty's high-octane ride.
Lea Sen - Levels CD/LP (Partisan)
Levels is a deeply immersive journey through memory, self-discovery, and emotional growth - imagined as a surreal, liminal hotel where each room holds a different chapter of her life. Blending experimental pop with slinky R&B, woozy trip-hop, and warm, smudged guitars, the record plays with the tension between reality and dreamlike abstraction. Inspired by her own coming-of-age, Lea Sen explores the spaces that shape us and how our perceptions shift over time. [Limited edition pink vinyl.]
Shura - I Got Too Sad For My Friends CD/LP (Play It Again Sam)
Five years after her critically acclaimed album forevher, Shura is back with her highly anticipated third studio album I Got Too Sad For My Friends. A pastoral blend of chamber pop, sixties folk and campfire Americana, it builds Shura's introspective songwriting out into a vast landscape more tranquil than the soulful bounce of forevher, and more rustic than the brooding synth-pop of her 2016 debut Nothing's Real. Though it's an album rooted in themes of depression and loneliness, I Got Too Sad For My Friends is far from downcast. Instead, it stays fully present in it's feelings and plunges it's fingers into the earth - even when it can be painful to do so. Produced by Luke Smith (Foals, Shygirl, Depeche Mode) and featuring collaborations with Cassandra Jenkins, Becca Mancari and Helado Negro, it retains Shura's usual crystalline sound and precision while introducing a different kind of warmth and earthiness.
Skullcap - Snakes of Albuquerque CD/LP (Cuneiform)
Janel Leppin : cello, Minimoog - Anthony Pirog : guitar - Mike Kuhl : drums - These long-time collaborators and three of the busiest musicians in the Baltimore/DC-area finally give themselves a name and release their first album together! Janel Leppin is firmly established as a mover and shaker for her work on multiple instruments and muliple genres with Priests and her own ensembles Janel and Anthony and Ensemble Volcanic Ash. Anthony Pirog's work has been called "otherworldly - feverish in it's delivery and interstellar in it's complexity" by Guitar. Com and he has performed all over the world in the punk/jazz group The Messthetics. Mike Kuhl has performed in jazz, rock and improvised music settings, with Tom Tom Club, Dave Liebman and many others. He has worked as an educator at Towson University and is a first call drummer for any situation. Snakes of Albuquerque is a record of instrumental rock that doesn't sound like anyone else. With this instrumentation, how could it?
Alan Sparhawk - Alan Sparhawk with Trampled By Turtles CD/LP (Sub Pop)
No one can help you build something beautiful quite like those who know you best. Alan Sparhawk knows this well. In his years in Low, he built decades of stirring music with his wife and lifelong creative partner Mimi Parker. In recent years, he has performed around Minnesota with his son Cyrus in DERECHO Rhythm Section, a funk band that also frequently features his daughter Hollis on vocals. There's an irreplaceable naturalism that comes with this kind of dynamic. Those who know you understand you. They love you. They want to help you bring your greatest passions to fruition. So it made sense that Sparhawk would turn to fellow Duluth musicians Trampled by Turtles to realize his latest record. As friends and mentees of Low's, taken under Sparhawk and Parker's wing from their earliest days as a bar band, Trampled by Turtles have performed with Sparhawk countless times over the years. The Duluth ties run deep: "There's a certain vibe that has to do with underdog syndrome, coming from a small town," Sparhawk muses. "Some of it is the weird grind and slackness that being at the mercy of Mother Nature puts in you. It humbles you." The two artists hold the kind of ironclad bond. Following Parker's passing in 2022, Trampled by Turtles invited Sparhawk to join them on tour to give him a space to be surrounded by friends. Occasionally, he would join them onstage. The outpouring of love was palpable every time they played together, a surge of warmth. When playing together is that powerful, why stop there? In winter, 2024, Sparhawk and Trampled by Turtles created With Trampled by Turtles, a record exactly as it's name implies: Collective. Communal. Fraternal. Empathetic.
The SteelDrivers - Outrun CD/LP (Sun)
The SteelDrivers celebrate their 20th anniversary with their seventh studio album, Outrun, via Sun Records. The Nashville-based bluegrass band simultaneously defies the traditions of the bluegrass genre and redefines it for generations to come, expertly weaving in rock, soul, blues, and Americana. "We wanted to create a record that felt timeless and musically connected to our past, and honor our founding member, Mike Henderson who passed away in 2023." [Limited edition whiskey brown vinyl.]
Swans - Birthing CD/LP (Young God)
"The material contained in this album was largely developed over the course a yearlong Swans tour, during 2023 - 2024 ('The Healers', 'I Am a Tower', 'Birthing', 'Guardian Spirit', 'Rope', and 'Away'), then recorded and further orchestrated and rearranged in the studio. Two pieces were created and performed in the studio ('Red Yellow', 'The Merge'). In all cases the material began with me sitting in my office with an acoustic guitar, singing and dreaming about what would become of these skeletal songs. I'm blessed to have such a stellar group of musicians to work with live (listed below), and through improvisation, endless revisions and an intensity of focus in performance (not to mention endurance), over the course of time the music morphed into what you generally hear on this collection. This album, coupled with the recent live release, Live Rope, constitutes my final foray (as producer / impresario) into the all-consuming sound worlds that have been my obsession for years. We'll do a final tour in this mode towards the end of 2025, then that's it. After that, Swans will continue, so long as I'm able, but in a significantly pared down form. Hints of that direction can be found in a few moments on the current album. In the meantime, my hope is that the music provides a positive and fertile atmosphere in which to dream." - Michael Gira / Swans
Vildhjarta - Där skogen sjunger under evighetens granar CD/2xLP (Century Media)
Swedish progressive metal pioneers Vildhjarta have built a career defined by mystique and groundbreaking artistry, consistently defying expectations. Formed in 2005 in Hudiksvall, the band has established an identity rooted in its darkly atmospheric and technically jarring sound. With its crushing, down-tuned riffs and complex polyrhythms, Vildhjarta sets itself apart with dense harmonic progressions, eerie soundscapes, and a unique blend of chaos and melody that has become synonymous with its name—and its enigmatic war cry, "Thall."
Watchhouse - Rituals CD/LP (Tiptoe Tiger Music)
Rituals, out May 30th, is the newest full length album from Watchhouse (Andrew Marlin & Emily Frantz). This is the first release of all new, original songs since their 2021 self-titled album, which found the duo embracing a new name and a new chapter for the band. - Recorded close to home in 2024 with co-producer Ryan Gustafson (the Dead Tongues), Rituals explores the boundaries between identity and awareness, and how we often confuse our patterns with our truths. The album muses on the endless nature of our evolution, asking questions like: how can we have a positive relationship with change, how can we meet our ends gracefully, and 'is the world on fire or at home in the sun? [Indie exclusive milky clear vinyl.]
Yeule - Evangelic Girl is a Gun LP (Ninja Tune)
Evangelic Girl is a Gun is yeule's most unrestrained and emotionally baring work yet, as they grapple with ideas of a self-destructive identity burning through the canvas of post-modernity. Accompanied by still visual artworks made in collaboration with artist Vasso Vu and a video for the latest single shot by the aforementioned Neil Krug, Ćmiel explores the duality of darkness, as well as their personal history to their role as the "painter." Through the album's hypnotic melodies, they present a portrait of the tortured artist trapped within an image, as Ćmiel's haunting vocals act as an emotional chokehold atop dance beats. Evangelic Girl is a Gun sees Ćmiel putting their own "cyborgian" spin on Bristol trip-hop and '90s gothic. The album features production from A.G. Cook, Chris Greatti, Mura Masa, Clams Casino, Fitnesss and Kin Leonn, Ćmiel's trusted collaborator and co-executive producer of 2023's softscars. Yeule's untreated vocals on the album also contribute to a sense of burning authenticity; rawness emerges as they abandon Auto-Tune. This jarring artistic styling is a turn from their glitchy previous works. As a counter to the emergence of AI, they wanted to imbue their vocals with a "raw, irreplaceable edge". yeule will be embarking on a full North American tour following the release of Evangelic Girl is a Gun.
Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

The limited deluxe reissue is being released in the wake of the 20th anniversary of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the classic selftitled debut album, and it's celebratory 2025 worldwide tour. "Philly indie luminaries/friends (members of Dr. Dog, Mazarin, the Walkmen, and Man Man appear) to collaborate on a wheezy, dark song cycle-cum-inebriated stumble down South Street" Pitchfork "If I want to do something with a particular group of people, I will," Alec Ounsworth said in 2008. This project saw him build a barn studio behind his house and work with friends like Matt Barrick (The Walkmen), Scott McMicken, Toby Leaman (Dr. Dog), Quentin Stoltzfus (Mazarin), and Billy Dufala (Man Man). Skin & Bones emerged as a louche, loose album a woozy blend of barroom rock 'n' roll, trippy desert blues, and Beatlesesque melodies. Wurlitzer and Hammond organ weave throughout, alongside jagged guitars, pedal steel, and saxophone. Barrelling drums and Ounsworth's idiosyncratic delivery tie it together. "Amid creative uncertainty, I tried to offset personal darkness with an upbeat album. Flashy Python reflects that messiness a 'catchy' name for a ship lost in foreboding confusion."

Featuring standout tracks from Lime Garden, SPRINTS, Lambrini Girls, Sunflower Bean, English Teacher, Dream Wife, Panic Shack, Big Joanie and more, this compilation channels the raw energy and rebellious spirit that can only be acquired through caring deeply about the injustices and hatred seen in this world. It is a sonic journey through the angst, passion, fun and freedom found through "sticking it to the Man".
