Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Alex Orange Drink - Victory Lap (#23) LP (15 Passenger)
Victory Lap (#23) is the third solo release from Alex Zarou Levine, best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Brooklyn punk band, The So So Glos. Recorded in the midst of his intensive treatment for a rare and serious cancer, these 10 songs capture the intensity of his experience while maintaining an undercurrent of defiant optimism. [Limited edition white vinyl.]
Aya - Hexed! LP (Hyperdub)
hexed!, Aya's second album, confronts the desperation and dysfunction of addiction. Internalised phobias and suppressed traumas haunt the corridors and golden hours once romanticised on 2021's i'm hole; daymares concealed by nocturnal afters-hopping and key bag circles. [Limited edition eco-mix vinyl.]
emptyset - disserver LP (Thrill Jockey)
emptyset’s sixth album builds on their ongoing exploration into the histories of electronic sound and media across the 20th century, considering the intertwined evolution of cosmic rock, minimalism and electronic music, viewed through their prospective dreams and overlapping technological ambitions. The compositions across Dissever draw threads from these pioneering production methods emerging in parallel across the late 1960’s, considering the cross talk between these fields and their radical intentions to carve out the future from differing paths, traversing the mystical and modern, while incorporating elements of the transformative, hypnotic, expansive and transcendent to define new principles within sound.
James Felice - The Little Ones CD/LP (15 Passenger)
On The Little Ones, James joins the long lineage of winking American tearjerkers, the great crying-in-your-beer smart alecks like Warren Zevon, John Prine, or even Tom Waits. With a similar rollicking ease on keyboard instruments, Felice sidles up next to Dr. John and bears Randy Newman's torch, frequently squeezing the blood of a catchy chorus from the stone of an unlikely song subject. His sometimes wounded, side-of-the-mouth vocal delivery brings longtime collaborator Bright Eyes to mind. [Indie exclusive milk chocolate color vinyl.]
Kelly Finnigan - Keep Me In Mind b/w Let Me Count the Reasons 7” (Colemine)
Kelly Finnigan has teamed up with soul music legend Renaldo Domino for his new 45. The A-track 'Keep Me In Mind' is a catchy, straight-down-the-middle soul tune in the classic dual male duo style of Sam & Dave, Eddie & Ernie, and Bob & Gene. Featuring organ and classic horn stabs, Kelly and Renaldo's voices blend harmoniously and make for a killer cut. The B-side, 'Let Me Count The Reasons,' is a track from Kelly's critically acclaimed new LP 'A Lover Was Born.' Slower in tempo and full of love and heart, the tune is a masterclass in romantic soulful sounds.
Florry - Sounds Like… LP (Dear Life)
On the winkingly titled Sounds Like... , the band's second full-length release via Dear Life, Florry is picking up right where they left off in 2023. Again upping the ante with a bigger, brighter, more abrasive sound that resembles something closer to Rolling Thunder Revue-era Bob Dylan than their humble DIY roots. Across ten tracks, the band wear their influences on their sleeve while carving out a space that is distinctly their own, blending raw honky-tonk grit and rich instrumental textures with the disarming sincerity and intimacy of the group's lo-fi beginnings. It's a record about searching searching for home, for love, for meaning, and for a sound that captures it all. [Limited edition apple red color vinyl.]
Joe Jonas - Music for People Who Believe in Love CD/LP (Republic)
New solo album from Joe Jonas, on limited edition white vinyl.
Taj Mahal & Keb Mo - Room on the Porch CD/LP (Concord)
Taj Mahal and Keb' Mo', two generations of American blues masters, reunite to release their second album together, Room On The Porch, following their GRAMMY Award winning album, TajMo (2017). This historic collaboration between two blues giants, converges their extraordinary talents for an album of original songs and covers. In this 10-song set, the title track features award-winning singer-songwriter Ruby Amanfu.
Adam Melchor - The Diary of Living LP (R&R)
Adam Melchor is a LA based singer-singer songwriter. A New Jersey opera student whose road trip to Los Angeles on a whim led to his success, Melchor plays both the soothing off-the-cusp folksinger and sonic tapestry-weaver on record.
Pachyman - Another Place LP (ATO)
Over four albums, Pachyman has proven himself a dedicated craftsman working in the lineage of dub reggae while mastering the methodology of masters like King Tubby and Scientist, using vintage gear, constructing glorious walls of sound, and developing an intuitive understanding of the power of repetition. With 'Another Place,' he synthesizes the myriad scenes that have recontextualized dub, from the synth-pop of William Onyeabor and Yellow Magic Orchestra to Basic Channel's amniotic dub techno. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]
Pan Amsterdam - Confines LP (Heavenly)
Having studied Jazz and Contemporary Music at the New School in New York City and subsequently collaborated with artists like Iggy Pop and Metronomy, Pan Amsterdam blends experimental hip hop, jazz, funk, and electronic influences, resulting in shapeshifting, genre-defying tracks. Confines, reflects Pan Amsterdam's refusal to be confined by genre. The music channels influences from hip hop's golden age, alongside nods to artists like Kool Keith, Busta Rhymes, and MF Doom.
Phi-Psonics - Expanding to One LP (Gondwana Records)
“Phi-Psonics is a spiritual exploration of being together and connecting,” says acoustic bassist Seth Ford-Young of the immersive project he initiated in East Los Angeles in 2016. For his third long-player under the Phi-Psonics banner, Ford-Young marshalled a series of live recordings at Healing Force Of The Universe records in Pasadena, sculpting fourteen tracks, largely composed in the moment with a fluctuating cast of players, which wonderfully transmit his ideals of community and inner peace.
Pinback - Information Retrieved LP (Temporary Residence)
On one hand, their fifth album, Information Retrieved, is the logical and accessible realization of a sound Pinback have been developing and refining for over a decade. However, that consistency that we've taken for granted is what makes Information Retrieved such a euphoric surprise; their finest and most fully realized album, a dozen years deep into a career that includes bona fide modern classics like "Good To Sea" and Summer In Abaddon. Simply put, this is better than we ever could have expected. They could have coasted on automatic pilot to another lauded album that likely would have made it onto plenty of year-end lists, but instead they shot the moon, and the result is a major triumph. The touchstones are still there: Zach Smith's stunningly unique bass guitar acrobatics driving both rhythm and melody in lock-step unison; the incredible immediacy of Rob Crow's voice that could make a phone book sound compelling; and the musical and lyrical interplay between the two of them that made Pinback so special in the first place. The difference now is their exquisite control over dynamics and a greater emotional resonance throughout. It's the most complete and soulful Pinback album by a fair distance, the finest moment in the career of a band whose unfettered brilliance we've come to count on, but will never again take for granted. [Limited edition blue vinyl.]
Puma Blue - Antichamber LP (Blue Flowers)
Written in the winter of 2024, antichamber marks a sonic shift for Puma Blue with Allen writing away from the full band setup focusing on obscure electronic textures and acoustic instrumentation. Whereas Puma Blue's previous material has honed in on the centre point between trip-hop, Jazz and electronica, antichamber showcases a different angle to Allen's songwriting demonstrating something more stripped-back and vulnerable. Antichamber follows Puma Blue's 2023 release, Holy Waters - an album that achieved widespread acclaim from NPR All Songs Considered, The FADER, Paste Magazine, Office Magazine, Document Journal and more - and 2021's In Praise of Shadows.
Resavoir & Matt Gold - Horizon CD/LP (International Anthem)
Imagine it’s late afternoon, you’re outside by the lake, and there’s sunlight on the water. This is the peaceful and contemplative scene that Matt Gold and Resavoir set on their collaborative LP Horizon. Across 10 lush and exploratory tracks, it’s the product of two Chicago-based musicians—Will Miller, the acclaimed trumpeter, composer, and producer who’s worked with SZA, Whitney, and more, and Gold, a seasoned multi-instrumentalist and accomplished guitarist—effortlessly combining their distinct sensibilities for something hypnotic and tangibly inviting. What started as a love letter to their shared admiration for ‘60s and ‘70s Brazilian music evolved into a dynamic and sprawling body of work. These sunny and expansive tunes are as immersive as they are endlessly replayable.
Marc Ribot - Map of a Blue City CD/LP (New West)
While it's not a singer-songwriter album, it is his first to center Marc Ribot’s plaintive, wise voice quite so prominently. Map of a Blue City bears the weight of its history gracefully, incorporating recordings made over nearly half of Ribot's life and reflecting on how he got to this particular moment. "Working on this album for so long, I've seen the world change dramatically and not really change at all. Some of the issues today are the same ones I thought about when I was just starting the album, but some are things I couldn't have dreamt of at the time. But I think that's why I was so determined to get the production values right. Recording production is really complicated, but it all boils down to what kind of room the listener feels they're standing in. There are some hard truths and cold observations in these songs. I wanted the room to be small enough so that we couldn't turn away: but warm enough to feel like you're hearing it from a friend." [Indie exclusive blue vinyl.]
Sparks - MAD CD/LP (Transgressive)
Sparks, brothers Ron and Russell Mael, are back with their 28th album 'MAD!', their first release with Transgressive Records. Most acts, by their seventh decade in the biz, would have slowed to a crawl, creakily playing their past hits on the heritage circuit and releasing nothing more than the occasional Greatest Hits collection. This is not the case for Sparks, who have triumphantly returned yet again, proving their resilience and relevance in a modern world with a fresh record and summer world tour to accompany it. [Limited edition light blue vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with lenticular cover.]
The SteelDrivers - Outrun CD/LP (Sun Records)
The SteelDrivers celebrate their 20th anniversary with their seventh studio album, Outrun. The Nashville-based bluegrass band simultaneously defies the traditions of the bluegrass genre and redefines it for generations to come, expertly weaving in rock, soul, blues, and Americana. "We wanted to create a record that felt timeless and musically connected to our past, and honor our founding member, Mike Henderson who passed away in 2023."

Thalia Zedek Band - The Boat Outside Your Window CD/LP (Thrill Jockey)
Thalia Zedek’s considerable body of work demonstrates a clarity of vision, a singular performance style, and an expansive range. Her ability to deliver raw emotions through her vivid stories of loss and hope, strife and triumph is unmatched. Zedek has long been a melodic songwriter in a series of heavy bands. That contrast, alongside her distinct blend of both direct and poetic lyrics, allows her to sing of the most difficult of life’s moments in ways that are both elevating and devastating. Out and proud her entire career, Zedek never hesitates to speak truth to power. The Boat Outside Your Window finds Zedek contemplating absence and distance, with songs as spirited as they are profoundly moving. The band is guitarist and vocalist Zedek, bassist Winston Braman, and drummer Gavin McCarthy (Karate), now joined by newest member, pedal steel guitarist Karen Sarkisian. On The Boat Outside Your Window, Sarkisian’s counter melodies and oblique augmentations created with non-traditional tools like an ebow, add an otherworldly quality to songs. The grit of Zedek’s guitar and drive of Braman and McCarthy are met with synth-like swells and more harmonic density. The album features guests Nancy Asch (percussion) and Beth Heinberg (piano) whose subtle touches are added to “Shoes” and “Aliyah”. The record was recorded with Andy Hong, mixed by Seth Manchester, and mastered by Sarah Register.

Headphones - Headphones 20th Anniversary Edition CD/2xLP (Suicide Squeeze)
In 2005, Headphones arrived as a seismic shift in David Bazan's already formidable canon a collection of synth-driven confessions that push the boundaries of narrative songwriting. Stripped down to it's barest essentials, the album finds Bazan and collaborators Tim Walsh and Frank Lenz constructing an audaciously raw soundscape: no guitars, just synthesizers, live drums, and Bazan's unmistakable vocals. Twenty years later, it remains a masterwork of emotional excavation and geopolitical reckoning, as relevant today as the day it was released. This 20th Anniversary edition, remastered by Christopher Colbert at National Freedom (The Walkmen, Richard Swift, Pedro the Lion), is housed in a gatefold jacket with expanded artwork by Grammy-nominated designer Jesse LeDoux, plus liner notes by writer and Belmont University Associate Professor David Dark. The self-titled album threads a delicate needle, simultaneously personal and prophetic. [Limited edition opaque yellow vinyl.]
Billie Holiday - All or Nothing at All LP (Verve)
Recorded in five sessions over 1956/1957 and released in 1958, this 12-track affair is loaded with the classic standards from Berlin, Ellington, Gershwin and more. Though some claimed Billie Holiday was beyond her peak at this point, it was Miles Davis who countered that this was her most effective time with her "deepest understanding and control" of the repertoire she was performing. Her supporting cast on this album contributes to that as well, which included Barney Kessel (Guitar), Ben Webster (Tenor Sax), "Sweets" Edison (Trumpet), and Jimmy Rowles (Piano). Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.
Thelonious Monk - Thelonious Himself LP (Craft Recordings)

Housed in a reproduction of the album's original tip-on jacket from Riverside Records and protected by an archival-quality inner sleeve. New liner notes from Ashley Kahn completes the package.
Moskito - Idolar LP (Awesome Tapes)
In the vibrant streets of Tembisa, South Africa, amidst the sprawling urbanity connecting Johannesburg and Pretoria, the story of Moskito began. Formed in 2001 by Mahlubi "Shadow" Radebe and the late Zwelakhe "Malemon" Mtshali, the group first emerged as a powerhouse of pantsula dancers. However, their undeniable passion for music soon led them down a new path one that would cement their place in kwaito history. Spending countless hours on the street corners of their township, where they were born and raised, Shadow and Malemon danced and sang with an infectious energy that attracted crowds. It wasn't long before the duo decided to channel their talents into a kwaito group, and after adding friends Petrick Iwane and Menzi Dlodlo, Moskito was born. Pantsula dancing emerged in the 1950s among Black South Africans in townships and continually evolved until it became intertwined with kwaito music culture. The stylized, rapid foot movements and characteristic low-dancing became associated with kwaito as it took over South African urban culture into the early 2000s. With limited resources, Moskito displayed immense creativity, recording demos using two cassette decks and instrumental tracks from other artists. They would rap and sing over an instrumental playing on one deck while the second deck records their performance. Their determination paid off when they submitted their demo to Tammy Music Publishers, who were captivated by Moskito's style. "Kwaito was the thing 'in' at the time. If you did music you did kwaito. We wanted to fit in and actually it was easy," says Radebe. "We didn't have engineers in the group, so the first time in a real studio was with Percy and Thami to record Idolar." That same year, the group released their debut album, Idolar, under Tammy Music. The album was an undeniable success reaching gold status selling over 25,000 units and earning them a devoted fan base across South Africa and neighboring countries like Botswana, Swaziland, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
