Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
Arm’s Length - There’s A Whole World Out There CD/LP (Pure Noise)
Produced by Anton DeLost-who worked with the band on Never Before Seen, Never Again Found and 2021's EP, Everything Nice-There's A Whole World Out There expands the band’s horizons in accordance with lyricist Allen Steinberg's developing frontal lobe, presenting him as more self-reflective contemplative than he was before. He wrote the parts for all the instruments, as well as the vast majority of the lyrics, alone in his room, and then brought those initial sketches, recorded as voice memos, to drummer Jeff Whyte, who added percussion to Steinberg's song skeletons. While the majority of the creative process was in Steinberg's hands, it was only when these songs were recorded as a full band with Jeremy Whyte, who played bass on the record, and Ben Greenblatt that their full potential was realized. The result is that the feelings driving these songs burst and bloom with full force, building on the incredible foundations set by the band's previous recorded output. [Indie exclusive ‘koi pond’ deluxe marble vinyl.]
Blood Monolith - The Calling of Fire LP (Profound Lore)
Blood Monolith is an emerging death metal juggernaut featuring members of Nails, Undeath, Ulthar, and Genocide Pact. Formed by guitarist / vocalist Shelby Lermo (Nails, Ulthar) in 2023 after his exit from Vastum, the goal was to create something even uglier, weirder, and more aggressive operating out of his new home base in the Washington DC / Northern Virginia area. Guitarist Tommy Wall (Undeath) joined Lermo, and the music for Blood Monolith's debut album was soon written. Bassist Nolan (Genocide Pact, Shitstorm) and drummer Aidan Tydings-Lynch (Deliriant Nerve, Brain Tourniquet) rounded out the lineup.
Boynextdoor - Boynextdoor 4th EP CD (Koz Entertainment)
Knock, Knock! It's Boynextdoor with their 4th EP titled [No Genre]! This new album is available in a Board Game ver. Specific to each member: SUNGHO, RIWOO, JAEHYUN, TAESAN, LEEHAN and WOONHAK.
The Callous Daoboys - I Don’t Want to See You in Heaven CD/LP (MNRK Heavy)
A fearlessly free-spirited collective from Atlanta, Georgia, The Callous Daoboys revels in high-strung extremity, careening from furious metal cacophony to unabashed rock 'n roll and back again. The band Kerrang! Hails as "gloriously chaotic" is like a Molotov cocktail combining extreme metal and nü-metal with life-affirming glee, as each song deliriously swerves across stylistic lines. [Indie exclusive white/yellow/black tri-color vinyl.]
Milena Casado - Reflections of Another Self CD/LP (Candid)
On her Candid Records debut "Reflection of Another Self," trumpeter, flugelhornist and composer Milena Casado delivers one of the most auspicious jazz debuts in recent memory. The album is a deeply personal exploration of identity, trauma, and self-discovery, rendered through an innovative blend of dreamlike electronic textures and outstanding organic performances. Co-produced with mentor Terri Lyne Carrington and multi-instrumentalist Morgan Guerin, the album features an all-star lineup including harpist Brandee Younger, flutist Nicole Mitchell, pianist Kris Davis, and bassist Meshell Ndegeocello. The core band showcases pianist Lex Korten, bassist Kanoa Mendenhall, and drummer Jongkuk Kim.
Tanika Charles - Reasons to Stay CD/LP (Record Kicks)
Two Times Juno awards listed and 2 times Polaris price listed, Canadian Soul Star Tanika Charles unleash the new album Reasons To Stay, her fourth full-length album, and her most introspective to date. Where her songs have typically touched on romantic love and heartache, the core love and loss of this record is family-focused.
Béla Fleck / Edmar Castañeda / Antonio Sánchez - BEATrio CD/LP (Bela Fleck Productions)
Banjo. Drums. Harp. Huh? To be sure, the new all-star trio of Béla Fleck, harpist Edmar Castañeda and drummer Antonio Sánchez features instrumentation that might safely be called uncommon. Unless, of course, you're already familiar with 19-time Grammy-winner Fleck - the genre-blurring virtuoso who has done more to expand the possibilities of the banjo than any other player in the instrument's history. From his bluegrass beginnings through his otherworldly Flecktones, his duo with Chick Corea and his reimagining of Rhapsody in Blue, Fleck's work never fails to surprise. What doesn't surprise is the impeccable caliber of his collaborators - and this new trio includes two of the most gifted musicians of their generation. The harpist, Casteñada, hails from Bogotá, Colombia, and has led his own bands in addition to sharing projects with such masters as Hiromi, Paquito D'Rivera and Grégoire Maret. 5-time Grammy-winner Sánchez grew up in Mexico City and built a reputation as one of the great jazz drummers through his work with guitarist Pat Metheny. He's also been a visionary bandleader, helming progressive groups like Bad Hombre, and collaborated with Chick Corea, Gary Burton, Charlie Haden, Michael Brecker and other giants. His Golden Globe nominated drum-set score for Alejandro González Iñárritu's 2014 film Birdman earned him renown far outside the jazz world. Playing original repertoire, much of it collaboratively written, this trio embarks nightly on fearless explorations that audiences will find irresistible - rich with strong melodies, gorgeous harmony and grooves that twist and turn while feeling fantastic. [Limited edition red vinyl.]
Friendship - Caveman Wakes Up CD/LP (Merge)
An album for sleeping and waking, walking and driving, hunting and fishing, for loitering outside a roadhouse on the haunted tundra. Okay in elevators, not great for dinner. On Caveman Wakes Up, Friendship's new album and second for Merge Records, the band's historically capacious definition of country music grows wider still. Shambolic guitars are offset by flute pads, bleary poetry is set against a Motown rhythm section, a song about Jerry Garcia and First Lady Betty Ford fades out with a drum solo, like if Talk Talk came from a dingy Philadelphia basement and was fronted by James Tate. Songwriter Dan Wriggins' ragged baritone cuts through eleven murky, swirling country-rock songs with profound lyrical substance and sincerity. Like an alarm clock incorporated into the edge of a dream, Caveman Wakes Up belongs equally to the conscious and subconscious mind, fraught with background, steeped in reference and experimentation, delivered casually and as a dire warning, dedicated, above all, to music's creative soul.
Ezra Furman - Goodbye Small Head CD/LP (Bella Union)
Goodbye Small Head is the name of the new record from Ezra Furman. Twelve songs, twelve variations on the experience of completely losing control, whether by weakness, illness, mysticism, BDSM, drugs, heartbreak or just living in a sick society with one's eyes open. These songs are vivid with overwhelm. They're not about someone going off the rails, they are inside that person's heart. The songwriting here is a revision to William Wordsworth's famous proclamation that "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes it's origin from emotion recollected in tranquility." [Limited edition sea blue vinyl.]
John Galm - River of Blood LP (Run For Cover)
It's harder to begin again when everyone already knows who you were. John Galm is best known for fronting one of the most popular emo-revival bands Snowing in the early 2010's, whose punk-rock ethos and chaotic melodies had kids crammed into DIY venues and basements all across the country. Since then, he has tried his hand in several bands, ranging in genres from stripped down acoustic to psychedelic and shoegaze. The latter band, Mt. Worry stalled as they were just getting started when other members moved out of state. Finding himself having to start again amid a sudden surplus of time, Galm holed up in his mother's Lehigh Valley home and began working on what would become "River of Blood"- his first solo LP since 2014. [Limited edition red vinyl.]
Kat Hasty - The Time of Your Life LP (Jackie Java)
Raised, and still rooted in West Texas, Kat Hasty's songs have been shaped by the desolation of the desert, the rough and rowdy crowd that comes through these small oil towns, and early signs of depression and an ever present sense of melancholy. Kat Hasty is stepping into a bold new era with her sophomore project, The Time of Your Life, set to arrive this May. The album marks her first full-band project and a significant departure from the stripped-down acoustic style that introduced her to the world. [Limited edition maroon with black swirl vinyl.]
Hooveriii Manhunter LP (Reverberation Appreciation)
After four albums of extra-dimensional exploration, Hooveriii delivered "Manhunter" with the controls set directly for the heart of the cosmic groove. Expertly synthesizing their influences and still managing to bring even more to the party, from spiky post punk to beautiful new age excursions and mammoth 70's arena rock hooks, "Manhunter" delivers not only their best album yet but an instant classic for all the psych-heads, stoners and dimensionauts. [Indie exclusive neon pink vinyl.]
José James - 1978: Revenge of the Dragon CD/LP (Rainbow Blonde)
Internationally acclaimed jazz vocalist José James returns with his most adventurous project to date, 1978: Revenge of The Dragon. Inspired by the trailblazing fighting spirit of Bruce Lee, James cements his reputation as a genre-defying innovator a la heroes Miles Davis, Erykah Badu and David Bowie. Produced by James and featuring an all-star lineup including Ben Wendel, Takuya Kuroda and BIG YUKI, "Revenge of The Dragon" searches through the streets of New York, LA and Tokyo to find the perfect gritty slice of late 70's jazz.
Femi Kuti - Journey Through Life LP (Partisan)
Femi Kuti's Journey Through Life marks a deeply personal chapter in the Afrobeat legend's career. Known for his sharp critiques of political corruption and social injustice, Femi balances his signature "sweet music with a bitter message" with introspective reflections on family, life, and personal growth. Revisiting old tracks with fresh perspectives and producing entirely on his own for the first time, the album captures his journey as an artist, activist, and father. [Limited edition orange vinyl.]
Lisa - Alter Ego LP (RCA)
World renowned rapper, singer, dancer and style icon, Lisa, will releases her debut solo album. With "Alter Ego", Lisa emulates five unique characters, showcasing her versatility and edge.
M(h)aol - Something Soft CD/LP (Merge)
Something Soft, the second full-length album by Irish post-punk firebrands M(h)aol, is anything but. From the first note of it's propulsive opening track to the distorted cries of it's last, Something Soft feels antagonistic to the very concept of softness, sonically and thematically, taking an unapologetic approach to intersectional feminism, animal welfare, consumerism, and the struggle to find a place in a world lacking in empathy. What M(h)aol offers is catharsis, in two forms: the kind you get from being open with others, and the kind you get from righteously smashing some shit up.
The Mayflies USA - Kickless Kids CD/LP (YepRoc)
The Mayflies USA make a triumphant return, after a 20+ year hiatus, with their album, Kickless Kids. The band has not lost any of the ingredients that gained them their initial notoriety - the glorious harmonies, the ear worm choruses, and the edgy guitars are all present on this new batch of songs.
Memotone - Pruning LP (Discrepant)
On his Discrepant debut, memotone aka Bristolian Will Yates collects some unreleased recordings under a most aptly titled name -- Pruning -- following a healthy stream of releases for such esteemed labels as Black Acre, The Trilogy Tapes or Soda Gong. Considering the process of pruning as a practice of selective removal, the album takes its name at face value never falling into a mere collection of tossed off material or random B-side assemblage, making it a cohesive listen throughout its disparate timeframe and evasions. Pruning veers closer to his Fourth World/ECM/Exotica meets Sci-fi transmutations in alignment with what would be expected from a memotone release on Discrepant. "Moss Zone" briefly sets the tone with a warm but queasy synth bedsheet that flows into the "Weird Figures" cyberjungle, all small twinkling percussions and rainforest pads slowly rising. "Riders" brings the synth-flute to an early Warp meets John Hassell's City: Works of Fiction scenario that pops up again in more disrupted form on "Wisdom [MOTHER]."
Charlie Musselwhite - Look Out Highway CD/LP (Forty Below)
Charlie Musselwhite is an American Blues icon. His story is entangled in the story of America, and he's been tracing it's highways and entertaining it's audiences, and those abroad, for nearly six decades. So, it's fitting that his new record, is entitled Look Out Highway, and it's remarkable that a man who has spent more days on the road than off still brings such spirit and passion to the music and the lifestyle. Charlie has collaborated with an eclectic list of incredible artists over the years, including Ben Harper (with whom he won a Grammy in 2014), Cyndi Lauper, Eddie Vedder, Tom Waits, Bonnie Raitt, Gov't Mule, INXS, George Thorogood, Eliades Ochoa, Cat Stevens, Elvin Bishop and John Lee Hooker. More than any other harmonica player of his generation, Charlie Musselwhite can rightfully lay claim to inheriting the mantle of many of the great harp players that came before him with music as dark as Mississippi mud and as uplifting as the blue skies of California.
Anthony Naples - Scanners 2LP (ANS Recordings)
After a two-year hiatus following his critically acclaimed fifth album Orbs, NYC-based techno/house producer and DJ Anthony Naples returns with his sixth album, Scanners, featuring ten new songs.
Pelican - Flickering Resonance CD/2xLP (Run For Cover)
Pelican has always been a band that's not just from Chicago, but distinctly of Chicago. Formed in 2000 by guitarists Trevor Shelley de Brauw and Laurent Schroeder-Lebec alongside brothers Bryan and Larry Herweg on bass and drums respectively, Pelican's foundation was built upon the rule-free, genre-agnostic scene synonymous with the Fireside Bowl. "The '90s in Chicago was a free-for-all. While longtime Pelican fans will recognize the album as an update to the band's ethos-one that's been constantly evolving since their very first EP, these songs take as much inspiration from titanic '90s post-hardcore, space-rock, and emo as they do traditional metal, showing that though Godflesh and Goatsnake records occupied the shelves of Pelican's songwriters, so too did Quicksand, Christie Front Drive, and Hum. [Limited edition orange vinyl.]
Ken Pomeroy - Cruel Joke CD/LP (Rounder)
Ken Pomeroy exists in the intersection of past, present and future; effortlessly channeling the ancestral wisdom of her elders and her lived experience through her lyrical and instrumental composition. Writing as a cathartic release has culminated in Pomeroy's highly anticipated album, Cruel Joke. The 12-track contemporary folk collection creates a wild but safe space of Pomeroy's own - a space that, like 22-year-old Pomeroy, is brutally honest, proudly Native American, and undeniably brilliant. [Limited edition forest green vinyl.]
Rico Nasty - Lethal LP (Fueled By Ramen)
Rico's third studio album arrives as the grown-up evolution of the "sugar trap" sound. But where her early work was girly, the 15-track LETHAL is all woman, presenting her signature hard/soft duality at it's sexiest, coolest, and most confident. Executive produced by Imad Royal, the Grammy-nominated producer known for his work with The Chainsmokers and Panic! At the Disco, the album balances playfully sophisticated songs that draw from the divine feminine ("Pink," "Butterfly Kisses") with tracks like "Teethsucker" and "Soul Snatcher" that channel monster truck show energy and establish Rico as a true originator of the rap-rock revival. [Indie exclusive clear vinyl.]
Sleep Theory - Afterglow CD/LP (Epitaph)
Sleep Theory's meteoric rise since bursting onto the scene in 2023 has been nothing short of extraordinary. Their breakout single "Numb" smashed into the Top 10 on Active Rock Radio, introducing a sound that feels as polished as it is powerful-something most bands take years to master. Following that initial strike, tracks like "Fallout" and "Stuck in My Head" cemented their place as chart-topping heavyweights. Their highly anticipated debut album, Afterglow, is packed with razor-sharp songwriting, impeccable musicianship, and vocals that will leave you breathless, this is the record fans have been waiting for. [Limited edition clear with orange swirl vinyl.]
Spill Tab - Angie CD/LP (Because Music)
Spill Tab is an LA-based artist, French-Korean songwriter and producer. Since 2019, Spill Tab has evolved her project through three EPs. Writing and recording while touring with Sabrina Carpenter and Wallows, Spill Tab road-tested her new songs to see what might land best with an audience who had never heard her music before. "The best songs come from writing the main idea in a day, as it's so instinctual," she says. "That's what I put on the record." Her debut album, ANGIE, available on transparent green-blue petrol color vinyl.
Surprise Chef - Superb CD/LP/Cassette (Big Crown)
Australia's world-renowned cinematic soul outfit Surprise Chef return with new album Superb. A record that represents a change in their creative approach and turns up the heat in their music. Trading in their meticulous writing and recording techniques for a looser and less planned approach with the intentions of bringing more levity to the process, and it comes through in spades. The high caliber musicianship is still front and center, but they push their sound into a more energetic and fun place on this album. [Limited edition translucent tangerine vinyl.]
Robin Trower - Come & Find Me CD/LP (Provogue)
Even now, as he reaches his eighth decade, with a lifetime of accolades and a seminal body of music behind him, Robin Trower is still chasing the biggest high he knows. It always starts the same way, with a road-scuffed Fender Stratocaster and a revved-up Marshall amplifier, those skilful fingers exploring the fretboard until a riff sticks and a new song ignites. And from the cultural flashpoint of Sixties London with Procol Harum, through 1974's stadiumfilling Bridge Of Sighs, right up to this year's acclaimed Come And Find Me, it's these addictive moments of creation that have kept the guitarist vital, relevant and contemporary while his peers trade on past glories.
Tune-Yards - Better Dreaming CD/LP (4AD)
Distraction, depression, and heartbreak reign supreme in 2025. "Making art in this day and age for me is a battle for focus; we're in an age of interruption," says Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs on sixth album Better Dreaming. Proudly waving an anti-fascist, liberation, freak flag, Better Dreaming contains some of tUnE-yArDs smoothest, funkiest, and most direct pop music to date, and yes, you can dance to it. [Indie exclusive blue vinyl.]
Yuno - Blest LP (Sub Pop)
Yuno's full-length debut, Blest, finds the enigmatic indie-pop visionary transforming the emo-tinged suburban malaise of his 2018 Moodie EP into more expansive, widescreen pop drama - suited for big moves and bigger stages. The kaleidoscopic sound he devised as a millennial hermit in his childhood bedroom in Florida has since broadened his horizons, taking him on tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Superorganism, and soundtracking various series for Netflix and HBO. Imbued with elements of dream-pop, rock, trap, and psychedelia, his eclectic songs serve as bids for love and connection, which especially in the fractured era of social media, have resonated with many listeners who find solace in his vulnerability. [Limited edition white vinyl “Loser edition”]
Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...
Afro-American Ensemble - Free the Black Man’s Chains LP (Charly)
The first ever reissue of the sought-after, cult, New York, gospel street opera, Free The Black Man's Chains. The most intriguing, and certainly the most ambitious project on the city's GSF label (see more stunning titles on GSF exclusively from Charly). The project had it's roots in a trio of singles released by the mysterious Broad Street Gang in 1971. The first, on the Cougar label called "Fair Skin Man" and it's two follow-ups "L-o-v-e Love" and the title track from the album "Free The Black Man's Chains". Celebrated musicians on the sessions were Mitchell Rowe, Bobby Eli, Len Pakula, Daryl Hall, Ron Baker, Norman Harris, The Raelettes and strings arranged by Richie Rome. A project like Free The Black Man's Chains should have been perfect for the multi-media nature of GSF. The album could have led to a film in the way that it had for Jesus Christ Superstar, but instead like so many of the label's releases, the album failed to make it's mark due to a lack of promotion. GSF would barely reach it's second birthday before it - and it's parent company - shut down. [Limited edition black & white marbled vinyl.]
Scrapper Blackwell - Mr. Scrapper’s Blues LP (Blues Joint)
An overlooked blues master, "Scrapper" Blackwell was a contemporary of Robert Johnson and other early Delta blues artists. A truly remarkable guitarist, he is best known for his work with pianist Leroy Carr during the late '20s and mid-'30s. After Carr's death, he retired and didn't record again until being rediscovered in the '50s. An inspiration for Muddy Waters and T-Bone Walker, Blackwell seemed a prime candidate for stardom when, soon after finishing his work on Mr. Scrapper's Blues, he was shot to death in a back alley in Indianapolis, the victim of a mugging. 180-gram VIRGIN VINYL LIMITED EDITION. The Complete Album + 1 Bonus Track.

Michael Hurley - Back Home with Drifting Woods LP (Mississippi Records)
"The recordings Contained herein are contained here after many years on the shelf... " So begin Michael Hurley's notes to these unbelievably great recordings from 1964... never before heard. Recorded by Fred Ramsey as part of the same sessions that resulted in Michael's First Songs LP on Folkways. Side A starts with What'llya Do, What'llya Say?, a pretty psychedelic classic that can very well put you into some kinda trance. After that we hear The Blues Had Gone Away - a sad drifty little tune, then Pretty Girl On rollerskates, with a rare Hurley harmonica solo & hallucinatory lyrics worthy of some examination, and then a beautiful alternate take on one of Michael's all time greats - The Tea Song. Side B starts up with yet more alternate takes of songs from the Folkways LP - this time of Intersoular Blues & I Like My Wine. After that we get to hear two great compositions for the first time, & man oh man are they pretty - Hey Hey Hey Hey & I Love You Babe. Real great stuff all around that we recommend for deep into it Hurley fans & newcomers to his art alike. Michael Hurley is a great American song writer with his own unique way of seeing the world & this LP is a great testament to his vision.
Michael Hurley - Fatboy Spring LP (Mississippi Records)
A full LP of never before released Hurley recordings from 1972-73! Great early versions of classic Hurley songs such as Automatic Slim & The Fatboys, Drivin' Wheel, Ghost Woman Blues, Watchin' The Show and The Portland Water that come off for the most part better than later releases of these songs. Hurley is backed up by 'The Fatboys' - not the rotund hip hop crew from the film 'Disorderlies' but rather a bunch of not so fat nice guys in Vermont who played mostly for the local dairy farmers (Later they were known as 'Sheriff Mocus & the Deranged Cowboys'). A laid back countryish album sure to please the hard core Hurley fan & casual listener too. Deep & breezy. Cover painting by Michael.

William Tyler - Future Myths LP (Watusi)
William Tyler is a Nashville guitarist and composer. He spent years woodshedding and touring with Nashville groups like Lambchop and Silver Jews before breaking away to focus on his own version of instrumental guitar music. In the summer of 2022, he was fortunate to have an artist residency at Epicenter in Green River, Utah, a tiny high desert town three hours from anything. One of the other non-profit friends of Epicenter was The Tank in Rangely, Colorado. The Tank itself is a giant and tall disused water tower from the high days of train travel and used to store water to cool train engines and such. Empty for decades, it is now an internationally recognized destination for sound art and almost unparalleled echo/acoustics. William Tyler decided to book recording time there and chose to re-interpret all of the songs of his 2019 album Goes West in a sparse yet cavernous solo acoustic setting: "Something about the frailty and space I wanted the songs to imply was lost in the production of the studio record, This felt like a reclamation of the songs and also a symbolic tribute to the stunning, haunted and vast possibilities of the American West, especially at the twilight of American Empire."
