Hitting The Racks
Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's
New Releases
The Academy Is... - Almost There CD/LP (I Surrender Records)
It's hard to believe twenty years have passed since The Academy Is... released their breakthrough debut Almost Here, a record that quietly shaped an underground era. In the years since, the band grew up, lived full lives, and ultimately found their way back. Almost There serves as a conceptual companion to their debut, reexamining the past from the present with clarity, reflection, and experience. "Almost Here was about leaving home," William Beckett reflects. "This album is about finding your way back." The songs capture the bittersweet truth that time moves fast, carrying a quiet urgency to chase what matters before it slips away. [White vinyl pressing.]
ADULT. - Kissing Luck Goodbye LP (Dais)
ADULT. Is not cooperating. For over 25 years, the dystopian Detroit synth-punk institution founded by Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller has embodied steadfast frustration, distrust, and apprehension. One might expect the edges to soften with time, but ADULT. Is not interested in the comforts of legacy. The duo's music has never sounded as visceral, urgent, and downright angry as it does on the culminating, uncompromising Kissing Luck Goodbye. Built with upgraded gear and a new library of sounds, the material is crushingly dynamic, louder-yet-clearer, with Kuperus' commanding delivery given greater prominence in the mix, outlining an arsenal of vivid, caustic calls, chants, and musings. Laughter, whether in the lyrics or as a possessed presence, serves as a leitmotif that speaks to the menacing absurdity of modern times. [Opaque red vinyl pressing.]
Courtney Barnett - Creature of Habit CD/LP (Mom+Pop)
In the hands of Courtney Barnett, fragments of everyday life become rich and riveting. Following Barnett's 2021's studio album Things Take Time, Take Time and her 2023 instrumental album End of the Day, Creature of Habit features ten tracks including a duet with one-time tour-mate Waxahatchee. [Caramel color vinyl pressing.]
Black Label Society - Engines of Demolition CD (MNRK Heavy)
Black Label Society - the uncompromising, thunder-wielding force led by the one and only Zakk Wylde - roars back to life with their twelfth studio album. The record captures everything fans have come to worship about BLS: crushing riffs, soul-soaked solos, signature vocals, and that unmistakable mix of heaviness and heart that only Zakk can deliver.
Cannons - Everything Glows CD/LP (Columbia)
Everything Glows is a powerful and entrancing fifth album from the beloved band. Written and recorded as lead singer and songwriter Michelle Joy rebuilt her health, the album showcases the sound of a trio of friends reinventing the way they create, collaborate, and sound. The 11 songs of Everything Glows navigate heartbreak and codependence, brokenness and, ultimately, liberation, spotlighting a group that found new ways to move forward and absolute excitement in both the process and its results. [Clear vinyl pressing.]
Chamber - This Is Goodbye... CD/LP (Pure Noise)
The third album from the Nashville-based metalcore outfit finds the band at their most "open and instinctive," produced once again by Randy LeBoeuf. [White, magenta, & blue splatter vinyl pressing.]
Charlotte Cornfield - Hurts Like Hell CD/LP (Merge)
Hurts Like Hell is Charlotte Cornfield's sixth album, the first she's recorded since the birth of her daughter, an inflection point for her as a person and an artist. The album's recurrent themes of personal growth and renewal, of love's perseverance through difficulty and shame and awkwardness, are rooted there. Hurts Like Hell is the most open-hearted, full-voiced album of her career, and also her most collaborative. Decamping to Philip Weinrobe's Sugar Mountain studio in Brooklyn, Cornfield was joined by a full backing band, including Palehound's El Kempner, Lake Street Dive's Bridget Kearney, Adam Brisbin, and Sean Mullins. Cornfield then recruited Feist, Buck Meek, Christian Lee Hutson and Maia Friedman to sing on the album. [Clear yellow vinyl pressing.]
Melissa Etheridge - Rise CD/LP (Sun Records)

The album, solely written by Farley and produced by Sadler Vaden (Jason Isbell) is an extension of his signature sound and evolution as an evocative songwriter. Drayton has toured with Willie Nelson, Dwight Yoakam, and Ryan Bingham, Drayton is shaping up to be one of the great American songwriters of his generation. [Indie exclusive "Cookie Monster" blue vinyl.]
Fcukers - Ö CD/LP (Ninja Tune)
ö is the highly anticipated debut album from New York City’s white-hot duo, Fcukers. Having quickly built a reputation for their electric live shows and irresistibly catchy hooks, Shanny Wise and Jackson Walker Lewis have gone from playing standing-room only shows at Baby’s All Right to packed out stadiums supporting Tame Impala and Justice in just 2 years. After 2024’s Baggy$$ EP, which spawned the band’s biggest hit “Bon Bon," all eyes have been firmly on the pair to find out what happens next, and Fcukers do not disappoint. A brief meeting with Kenneth Blume (FKA Kenny Beats) - fresh off producing Geese’s Getting Killed - turned into a whirlwind session at Blume’s studio, where they recorded the entirety of their new album. With 100 gecs’ Dylan Brady providing additional production on tracks across the album, the result is 11 tracks that make you feel like you’re at the afterparty. [Indie exclusive vinyl edition includes signed insert.]

The song "Traffic Lights, " co-written with Thom Yorke and Josh Johnson, accompanies the album announcement. [Red vinyl pressing. Vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]
Free Throw - Moments Before the Wind CD/LP (Wax Bodega)
Since forming in 2012, Free Throw's story has been simple: keep going. New records, longer tours, bigger rooms - it's always been another step upward for the Nashville-based quintet, whose 2014 debut, Those Days Are Gone, has become an era-defining classic in the emo-punk genre, launching them onto global tours with Hot Mulligan and New Found Glory. Their sixth album, recorded with longtime producer Brett Romnes, chronicles a surrealist descent into liminality: a period of intense personal upheaval colored by loss, renewal, reflection, and, ultimately, life-altering joy through the impending birth of a child. The 11-song set is disarmingly real, colored by sonic spontaneity - a swirl of Midwest emo, sweat-soaked punk fervor, and crashing alternative rock - but also the sort of achingly vulnerable lyricism fans and critics have come to expect from the band. [Indie exclusive yellow vinyl pressing. Vinyl shipped late and will arrive next week.]
José González - Against the Dying of the Light CD/LP (Mute)
Where José González's previous record Local Valley turned inward toward place, language, and personal reflection, Against the Dying of the Light widens its gaze, becoming an urgent call to preserve the light of humanity with all its flaws, at a moment when technology increasingly shapes how we think, feel, and relate to one another. González works within a deliberately minimal framework, pushing his familiar palette to new heights through subtle variation, restraint, and detail. Written in English, Swedish, and Spanish, the record reflects his Swedish-Argentine roots and frames its humanist message as a global one rather than a purely personal or political statement. [White vinyl pressing.]
David Gray - Nightjar 2xLP (iht records)
David Gray's 'Nightjar' arrives as a companion piece to the 20th anniversary edition of 'Life in Slow Motion'; a 19-track collection of never-before-heard songs. Born from the same writing sessions that lead to 'Life in Slow Motion', 'Nightjar' is a trove of classic David Gray, alongside more experimental pieces and unexpected twists
Hellripper - Coronach CD/LP (Century Media)
From the moment that Hellripper burst into the metal world’s simmering consciousness back in 2014, the speed metal throne was destined to be conquered. Containing 8 new songs across 44 minutes, their highly anticipated 4th album reaches new levels of incisive, metallic intensity for the Scottish blackened speed metal threat. Bolder, braver and more adventurous than ever before, Hellripper are built for speed and ablaze with infernal glory! [Indie exclusive turquoise & black vinyl pressing.]
Rafael Anton Irisarri - Points of Inaccessibility LP (Black Knoll Editions)
For his latest album, Ibero-American composer Rafael Anton Irisarri coaxed long bowed-guitar tones through a network of pedals and looping systems, the raw gestures thickening into a vaporous and architectural field of sound, before shaping the recordings by carving pathways through the improvisations and mapping selected passages into MIDI. This process allowed him to build outward from the bowed-guitar material with minimal overdubs, adding Prophet 5 textures, Moog bass and strings that expanded the harmonic field while keeping the original performances at the center. Abul Mogard provided editorial input, working with Irisarri's stems to guide transitions and strengthen the overall pacing. What emerges is a work that examines the tension between technological systems and human presence. Points of Inaccessibility asks whether connection is still possible within environments shaped by mediation and delay, or whether we have become isolated points within the very networks that promise proximity.
Boldy James - Criminally Attached LP (Near Mint)
Boldy James & Nicholas Craven's 4th album and 2nd of the 2025 calendar year. This time around their artistic chemistry is sharper than ever, continuing to pave their lane as one of the most innovative rapper & producer combos this decade. [Orange vinyl pressing.]
Kekht Arakh - Morning Star CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
Morning Star finds Këkht Aräkh arriving at a truer, more refined version of himself. Recorded between Berlin and Stockholm, the album emerges from a period of intense personal and artistic growth, blending aggressive black metal passages with immersive, textured soundscapes that feel both intimate and vast. Created at a point of artistic clarity, the album explores a rawer, more personal emotional palette, shaped by stress, anxiety, and long stretches of writer's block, giving it rare immediacy and vulnerability. With Morning Star, Këkht Aräkh synthesizes past explorations with new collaborative energy, producing a record that honors 90s black metal tradition while embracing lo-fi warmth, melancholic melodies, sonic experimentation, and emotional candor. [Black ice vinyl pressing. This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]

Kali Malone + Leila Bordreuil - Music for Intersecting Planes CD/LP (Ideologic Organ)
Music for Intersecting Planes marks the first collaborative release between cellist Leila Bordreuil and organist Kali Malone. Minimal in means yet expansive in effect, the music unfolds like beads on a thread, punctuated by silence and deep breaths. Shifting currents of air pressure emerge from the manually pumped organ, enriched by the cello's finely drawn harmonics to form a microscopic and granular perspective of timbre. Interference patterns spin the sound mass as Malone and Bordreuil play against the stillness of sine waves. Recorded by candlelight at the Temple de Saint Théodule in La Tour-de-Peilz in Switzerland, the music balances patience and intensity, composition and chance, severity and tenderness.

The album finds bandleader A.C. Newman, Neko Case, Kathryn Calder, John Collins, and Todd Fancey-expanding their already rich catalog in surprising fashion. I've always said that, and I guess I'm in the process of making medicine for myself that I can share with the world. I want us all to say to ourselves that it's going to be all right, and I'm going to have faith in the seeds that I've planted beneath the snow. I wanted to create something that is a hug or bed or soft place for that person who needs it.'" [Indie exclusive clear mint vinyl pressing.]

Robyn - Sexistential CD/LP (Young)
Sexistential is the most ecstatic record that Robyn has ever made, the sound of one of contemporary music's most influential artists coming home. After the club music meditations of 2018's Honey, the album features nine playful pop songs that tie back to her era-defining Body Talk trilogy, designed to feel "like a spaceship coming through the atmosphere at a really high speed and crash landing", she says. "That's how I felt, like I'd had all these experiences searching too far out into space, and now I'm crashing back into myself." Co-produced with longtime collaborator Klas Åhlund, and featuring Max Martin among the writing credits, Sexistential heralds one of the decade's most celebrated comebacks. Featuring singles "Dopamine", "Talk To Me" and "Sexistential", it's emphatic and punchy, defiant about emotional and biological pleasure, need and softness. [Indie exclusive white vinyl pressing.]
Rotting Christ - Aealo 2xLP (Season of Mist)
Re-recorded version of the Greek black metal band's 2010 album. Completely revitalised with modern production and a far stronger mix, Aealo emerges more cinematic than ever: female lamentation choirs, martial percussion, folkloric melodies, and commanding riff-work collide in a sweeping vision of war, tragedy, and pagan spirituality. Guest appearances by Diamanda Galás and Alan A. Nemtheanga (Primordial) heighten the album’s mythic presence, while the enhanced dynamics reveal layers previously buried in the original recording.
Shabaka - Of the Earth CD/LP (Shabaka Records)
The third solo album from multi-instrumentalist, producer, and artist Shabaka (a.k.a Shabaka Hutchings) and his first solo album to be released via his own label was entirely written and produced by Hutchings himself. Of The Earth sees Shabaka return to his signature saxophone sound, alongside accomplished electronics and production, as well as traditional woodwind and percussion instruments from around the world, a combination indicative of Hutchings' diverse talents and the overall sound on Of The Earth. Hutchings is highly regarded for his work with The Comet Is Coming, Sons of Kemet, and Shabaka and the Ancestors. As a musician he has also worked with a wealth of prestigious artists such as Andre 3000, Floating Points, Mulatu Astatke, The Sun Ra Arkestra, Lianne La Havas, Saul Williams, and more. Snail Mail - Ricochet CD/LP (Matador)
On Ricochet, the third album from Snail Mail, Lindsey Jordan returns to assert herself as a generational songwriter, clear-eyed and honest as ever. Time has passed, but she remains a sensitive soul, and here her incisive introspection is tethered to newly expansive and hypnotic melodies and ornate string arrangements. When it came time to record the songs bouncing around in her head, Jordan turned to a friend, Aron Kobayashi Ritch, the bassist and producer of the fuzzy indie rock band Momma. Jordan describes the process as refreshing, trusting, and comfortable. These 11 songs are colored by the anxiety of watching life slip through your fingers, as well as the vulnerability of loving deeply rather than frenetically. [Indie exclusive red vinyl pressing.]
Soulive - Flowers LP (Color Red)
The pioneering modern organ trio's first full-length album in 15 years. For more than twenty-five years, the Woodstock, New York-formed trio Soulive have carried the flame of the Hammond-organ format for a new generation. Guitarist Eric Krasno, organist Neal Evans, and drummer-producer Alan Evans built their language on feel and economy - three voices locked in, sweat and telepathy with no wasted motion. Tracked at Flóki Studios - a century-old former grocery store on Iceland's north coast - the sessions pulled the trio out of routine and back into focus.
Stuck - Optimizer LP (Exploding in Sound)
Have you ever felt like you were trapped riding shotgun in a car spinning out of control? Stuck, the Chicago post-punk group comprised of Greg Obis (vocals, guitar), David Algrim (bass), and Tim Green (drums, keys) know the feeling well. This nightmarish joyride with a malicious stranger at the wheel comes straight from the lyrics of "gg", the closing track on their latest full length album Optimizer. The feeling of being unable to stop a machine hurtling toward danger by its own momentum pervades across the whole record. Turning his eye for political lyrics instead to more directly social subjects, Obis sees the world as one big commercial gym packed to the gills with debt-ridden and desperate marks who only tear their gaze away from the mirror to watch the latest pitch from the latest digital huckster promising a better you at a reasonable fee. [Royal blue vinyl pressing.]
Tigers Jaw - Lost on You CD/LP (Hopeless)
Influential rock band Tigers Jaw returns with Lost on You, a riveting seventh studio album produced by longtime collaborator Will Yip (Turnstile, Scowl). The record builds upon the critical success of 2021's I Won't Care How You Remember Me, refining their vulnerable yet self-assured style with newfound dynamics, textures, and tones. Through their chemistry and forthrightness with one another, Tigers Jaw have reached a new apex of creativity, a peak from which the band processes the life changes that eventually come for everyone. Lost On You electrifyingly captures the beauty of simply letting go, remembering that you've survived what you've already experienced, and knowing that you'll get through life's latest transitions. [Indie exclusive pink vinyl pressing. This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]

Featuring the legendary (and self-proclaimed The Twilight Sad fan) Robert Smith, "It's the Long Goodbye" marks the next evolution of The Twilight Sad following 2019's critically acclaimed "It Won/t Be Like This All the Time". [Indie exclusive yellow vinyl pressing.]

[Clear lime color vinyl pressing.]
Yonder Mountain String Band - Good as True LP (Frog Pad)
The 12th studio album from Yonder Mountain String Band leans into a warm, expressive sound - bluegrass shaped with an indie edge, rock undertones, and a hint of country. Recorded live in the studio, its eight original tracks trace romantic, personal, and societal relationships and the work it takes to stay connected. Across Good As True, Yonder moves between high-tempo runs, layered harmonies, and moments that breathe - a reminder that nearly three decades in, they're still charting new ground.

Grand Theft - Grand Theft LP (Ancient Grease)
Grand Theft was a one-shot explosion of heavy rock madness out of Seattle in 1972. What began as a tongue-in-cheek jab at the bombast of bands like Grand Funk Railroad quickly spiraled into something raw, real, and entirely their own. Dave Baroh's snarling guitar riffs, Kevin Marin's thunderous bass, and Phil Klitgaard's primal yet sharp drumming cut through like a cracking whip on a stormy night. What began as a fleeting joke became a proto-metal curiosity, a wild card in the deck of early '70s rock. Grand Theft remains a testament to rock's untamed spirit and a primal scream in the face of convention.

Knocked Loose - You Won't Go Before You're Supposed To LP (Pure Noise)
As Knocked Loose chipped away at what would become their third album, they felt the pressure from all sides. Internally, there was the need to challenge themselves as songwriters while retaining the merciless intensity and unflinching honesty that have always been their calling cards. Externally, there was a whole new set of eyes on the hard-touring Louisville quintet, following a banner year in which they'd brought their underground-seasoned sound to some of the world's biggest stages. But in the end, vocalist Bryan Garris, guitarists Isaac Hale and Nicko Calderon, bassist Kevin Otten, and drummer Kevin "Pac Sun" Kaine honed a diverse, cohesive, and savagely intense album that both sums up the massive strides they've taken during their decade as a band, and asserts their boundless potential going forward. Third Angle New Music - Philip Glass: 1000 Airplanes on the Roof 2xCD (Orange Mountain)
Philip Glass's science fiction music drama, 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, premiered in 1988 at the Vienna International Airport (Hangar No.3). This one-act melodrama contains a text by renowned playwright and frequent Glass collaborator, David Henry Hwang. When Virgin records released the piece in 1989, the very curious decision was made to totally omit the Hwang text. The original score by Glass, was presented without the context of the drama. As the original recording was largely misunderstood, it is presented here for the first time with both the music and drama as one would hear it in the theater, alongside an additional music-only experience. Volume 1 includes the complete music drama with Hwang's text performed by Ithica Tell as M, and the sound design used in their staged production. Volume 2 presents the entire musical experience including vocals, but without the text and theatrical elements.
