Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Em Beihold - Tales Of A Failed Shapeshifter LP (Republic)

The debut album from multiplatinum, critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Em Beihold. "After 'Numb Little Bug'" says Beihold, "I went through an extreme emotional whiplash, from experiencing success beyond my imagination to feeling like I lost my creativity - and therefore my purpose - entirely. This album is a story about coming back to myself in the form of pop." [Limited edition includes autographed insert.]

BLACKPINK - The 3rd Mini Album [Deadline] CD (YG Entertainment)

BLACKPINK makes a triumphant return with their third mini album, [DEADLINE], their first full-group album in approximately four years Featuring the single 'JUMP', which was released this past July, the mini album showcases BLACKPINK's musical evolution and artistic versatility through tracks that span diverse styles and genres. [Pink, Gray, Black, and Silver book editions are available.]

Bill Callahan - My Days of 58 CD/2xLP/cassette (Drag City)

Bill Callahan continues to open uncanny depths of expression, blazing one of the most original singer-songwriter trails out there. Applying the living, breathing energies of his concerts to this album production, he sharpens his slice-of-life portraiture to cut deeper, releasing a stream of singalong consciousness: poetic, cinematic, novelistic, comedic - and above all - musical.

Carpenter Brut - Leather Temple CD (No Quarter)

Leather Temple, the third and final chapter of the Leather trilogy, channels a raw and nervous energy, somewhere between saturated electro, industrial fever, and 90s synthetic pulse. Yet behind this intensity also lies a cinematic and orchestral dimension, with arrangements that expand the horizon and add dramatic scope. A tight format, a constant intensity: Leather Temple goes all in on impact, balancing raw immediacy with the feel of a post-apocalyptic movie soundtrack.

Catbeats - All Cats are Cute LP (Org Music)

An instrumental funk / beats album, from Catbeats aka Shelby Cinca of 90s hardcore band Frodus. This album celebrates not only cats but the spirit of diversity and togetherness among all beings on Earth. Whether oneʼs home is shared with cats, dogs, rodents, birds, humans, or simply a love for all creatures, this record serves as the soundtrack - a ride away from the bustle, cruising on a technicolor catbus past the soul train to the rainbow bridge. Inspired by Furnace Record Pressingʼs resident rescue cats, Tibby and Slippy, this LP benefits cats who need it most. 100% of proceeds will be donated to Brooklyn Animal Action, supporting their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. [Blue vinyl pressing.]

Crooked Fingers - Swet Deth CD/LP (Merge)

Eric Bachmann's first album under his Crooked Fingers moniker after a 15-year hiatus. The songs on Swet Deth are about death, yes, but there's a sweetness to them, a wry sensibility to his lyrics that comes from having experienced many kinds of death and the life that follows in its wake. Hearing parts in these songs that called for instruments he didn't play or vocals that weren't in his register, Bachmann found himself expanding the roster of guest musicians further than he had on any album in his catalog, including Sharon Van Etten ("Haunted"), The National's Matt Berninger ("From All Ways"), and Superchunk's Mac McCaughan ("Cold Waves"). There is a freedom to this collection of songs, a groove to them that would belie their agonies and anxieties were mere death the album's point and not what comes before.

Final Gasp - New Day Symptoms CD (Relapse)

The second studio album from Boston's Final Gasp. Steeped in nocturnal, death rock adventurism, riven with a post-punk anxiety that feels increasingly like the twitching heart of our modern age, and driven by hardcore punk intensity.

Bill Frisell - In My Dreams CD/2xLP (Blue Note)

Bill Frisell's latest project is a family reunion of sorts, which brings some of the acclaimed guitarist's closest friends together into a unique sextet, featuring Jenny Scheinman on violin, Eyvind Kang on viola, Hank Roberts on cello, Thomas Morgan on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. Their deep musical history goes back decades, though never in this configuration, and together they travel wide expanses of American music including Frisell originals as well as jazz and Americana staples. Produced by Lee Townsend, the album is released as part of Frisell's 75th birthday celebrations.

Asher Gamedze - A Semblance: Of Return LP (Northern Spy)

The new album from South African drummer, composer, and bandleader. Gamedze gathers a close ensemble of longtime collaborators to explore what he calls "practices of assembly" - ways of making sound, and imagining new and old modes of freedom. Based in the independent music scenes of Cape Town and rooted in Pan-Africanism and Black Consciousness, Of Return extends the political and musical commitments that have defined Gamedze's work while opening a newly collective chapter in his practice. The music moves with a grounded, searching energy, shifting between group vocals, groove-heavy ensemble passages, and moments of stark melodic clarity. ["Emulsive Return" clear smoke color vinyl pressing.]

Gorillaz - The Mountain CD/2xLP (Kong Studios)

Gorillaz' 9th studio album, featuring contributions from artists such as Anoushka Shankar, Asha Puthli, Black Thought, Gruff Rhys, Idles, Jalen Ngonda, Johnny Marr, Kara Jackson, Omar Souleyman, Paul Simonon, Sparks, and Yasiin Bey; as well as the voices of Bobby Womack, Dave Jolicoeur, Dennis Hopper, Mark E. Smith, Proof and Tony Allen. Produced by Gorillaz, James Ford, Samuel Egglenton, Remi Kabaka Jr. and Bizarrap (Orange County), The Mountain was recorded in London, Devon, Miami, Jaipur, Mumbai, New Delhi and Rishikesh; and features artists performing in five languages: Arabic, English, Hindi, Spanish and Yoruba. [Indie exclusive yellow vinyl pressing.]

Heavenly - Highway to Heavenly CD/LP (Skep Wax)

The first album from Heavenly in 30 years. As fiercely independent as any punk band, but as sweetly melodic as any chart-topping act, Heavenly combine sharp-edged lyrics with shamelessly joyful pop music. Highway To Heavenly shares this musical recipe with the band's first four albums, all of which were released in the 1990s at a time when sensitive indie types in the UK were sheltering from the prevailing macho-rock storm under the Sarah Records umbrella, and when women in the US were starting to find their Riot Grrrl voices in the small town of Olympia, where labels like K and Kill Rock Stars were designing a new creative space. The new songs are full of anger, of grief, of empathy, of love, and set themselves in opposition to the resurgence of the cold 'masculine energy' that is making the world a miserable, aggressive place today.

Hunx and His Punx - Walk Out on This World LP (Get Better)

The fourth full-length from the queercore/garage rock band, 12 years on from their last album. The record captures both the joy of reunion and the weight of everything the band endured along the way. It is a document of survival, resilience, and enduring friendship, a reminder that even after long silences and brutal setbacks, some bands are simply too vital to stay gone. [Clear with neon green splatter vinyl pressing.]

Iron & Wine - Hen's Teeth CD/LP (Sub Pop)

Hen's Teeth and the previous album from Iron & Wine, 2024's Light Verse, are siblings of a sort. They were recorded during the same sessions after a year-long dry spell, with the same band, at Waystation studio in Laurel Canyon. But while Light Verse is a sweet and airy album, impressionistic, at times even flirting with abstraction, the world of Hen's Teeth is earthier, darker, more robust and more tactile. As for the music, Beam says: "The experiments in this one were more with genre than with form. For the last couple years one of my go-to's has been Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, that style where jazz musicians play folk music and it blossoms in different ways than folk musicians are normally interested in doing." The results nod to everything from Dock Boggs to Simon & Garfunkel to Tropicalia. [Loser Edition transparent white vinyl pressing.]

Kneecap - No Comment 7" (Heavenly)

Riding a hefty drop down bass riff courtesy of the track's producer, acclaimed DJ/artist, Sub Focus, the Belfast / Derry trio, Kneecap, have focused on the British states abuse of power and intimidation following their failed pursuit at charging Mo Chara with terrorism offences. "No Comment" hits back hard, another massive track that will bounce off the walls of clubs and arenas.

Bruno Mars - The Romantic CD/LP/cassette (Atlantic)

The fourth studio album from the global superstar and 16-time Grammy Award-winning artist marks Mars' first solo album release since 2017's 24k Magic and follows chart topping collaborations with Anderson .Paak as Silk Sonic, as well as smash hits with Lady Gaga and ROSÉ. [Indie exclusive red vinyl pressing.]

Buck Meek - The Mirror CD/LP (4AD)

A gleaner of the forgotten, singer-songwriter Buck Meek tips over the familiar and turns the unknown into a companion. On his fourth solo record, there's a tender power, countered by immutable vulnerability. With an uncanny curiosity, Meek conjures twin worlds to reveal the uniqueness in the mundane. Inviting in reflection as collaborator and demon as friend, The Mirror doesn't seek to know but to ask, looking to the shape of a question rather than the illusion of its answer. Conceptually, The Mirror emerged from the idea to combine Meek's band's live, kinetic energy with an oblique electronic world with the help of producer (and Big Thief bandmate) James Krivchenia. New creative partners and longtime friends like composer and ambient musician Alex Somers joined in on synthesizer, toy microphone, and piano, and Mary Lattimore brought in the sounds of her prismatic harp. [Clear vinyl pressing.]

Mitski - Nothing's About to Happen to Me CD/LP/cassette (Dead Oceans)

The eighth studio album by Mitski. The album was produced and engineered by Patrick Hyland and mastered by Bob Weston, with assistance on drums and logistics from Kris Bulakowski. Continuing the musical through line established with The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, the album features live instrumentation by The Land touring band and ensemble arrangements. The orchestra was recorded at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios, arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson, engineered by Michael Harris, with additional engineering by Isaac Diskin and assistance from Alex Miller. [Indie exclusive tansy yellow vinyl pressing.]

Neal Morse Band - L.I.F.T. CD (Inside Out)

The fifth studio album from the Neal Morse Band, featuring Neal Morse, Mike Portnoy, Eric Gillette, Bill Hubauer, and Randy George, continuing their tradition of spiritually themed progressive rock with a concept album about a journey of finding belonging.

Nondi_ - Nondi... LP (Planet Mu)

Nondi… has a hazy, nostalgic atmosphere, pushing her sound in bold new directions. Some moments stay closer to genre, like Broken Future 175, a drum&bass tear-out that dissolves into lush, blurred chords, or Just Hanging Out, a beautiful take on 2-step. Lead single Tree Festival feels like a blown-out fusion of rave energy and sped-up new-age bliss, while Death Juke drifts through off-beat vocal samples, pulsing drums and 8-bit FX, reminiscent of early Steve Reich reimagined through a Game Boy.

Nothing - A Short History of Decay CD/LP/cassette (Run for Cover)

Nothing have always been rule-breakers. Shoegaze renegades who've rebuilt the stereotypically lightweight genre in their own bloody-knuckled American image. Their fifth album, A Short History of Decay is the most evolved musical statement in Nothing's catalog. Songs like "Cannibal World" and "Toothless Coal" are cataclysmic lashings of mechanized industrial-gaze that sound like a more extreme My Bloody Valentine. On the other end of the spectrum, the ornately morose "Purple Strings" boasts a beautiful string arrangement that includes harpist and two-time Nothing contributor Mary Lattimore. [Available as a gray marble vinyl pressing and an indie exclusive "First Run Club" orange, yellow, & white vinyl pressing.]

Stephen O'Malley - Spheres Collapser LP (XKatedral)

Brand new album release from Stephen O'Malley, co-founder of SUNN O))), with new unreleased music for pipe organ. This record contains two long-form compositions for pipe organ by Stephen O'Malley, which he performs on these recordings alongside the celebrated organist Kali Malone and Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary). The album was recorded on Les Grandes Orgues (Scherrer (1777), Walker (1867), Kuhn (1995)) at Église Saint-François, Lausanne, Switzerland, on Christmas 2021.

Together, they merge their distinct styles to deliver an album that feels both familiar and unexpected, pushing creative boundaries while staying rooted in classic hip-hop sensibilities. The album was fully produced by RJD2, with Supastition delivering all vocals. Guest appearances include J-Live, STS, and E. Smitty. [Green marble vinyl pressing.]

Surgeons Girl - A Moment to Machine 12" (Livity Sound)

Five years on from her debut on the label, Surgeons Girl returns to Livity Sound with an EP of explorative, synth-rich techno. On A Moment To Machine, McMillan showcases a widescreen strain of techno that leans into the expressive, emotional weight of powerful synth composition while maintaining a fierce physicality tuned up for the club.

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

William Basinski - The Disintegration Loops (Arcadia Archive Edition) 4xCD/8xLP (Temporary Residence)

Since the turn of this century, perhaps no other modern composition has had a more resonant healing effect than The Disintegration Loops. Composer William Basinski's deteriorating analog tape loops evolved from melodic symphonies to melancholic silence over a span of time that uncannily turned passing minutes into pensive lifetimes. In her foreword for the new box set reissue of The Disintegration Loops, the pioneering multimedia storyteller Laurie Anderson describes the impact of this transformation in poetic detail: "These dissolving sounds, this emptying space, has gained my complete confidence. They are taking me somewhere. I am willingly following these sounds, becoming more and more transparent." The Disintegration Loops - Arcadia Archive Edition is an expansive new box set that includes the entire 5-hour suite of iconic work. Newly remastered from the original recordings by Josh Bonati.

Andrew Bird - The Mysterious Production of Eggs LP (Wegawam Music)

20th anniversary reissue. In 2003 Andrew Bird removed himself from the noise of city life in Chicago to work on his music in a barn in rural Illinois. The result was a career-defining record exploring childhood, creativity, and science with wit, precision, and ambition. The Mysterious Production of Eggs crystallized Bird's signature style and introduced the live-looping ingenuity that would define his performances for decades. Reissued with deluxe reimagined artwork by longtime collaborator Jay Ryan.

Circle X - Prehistory LP (Drag City)

The music of these Louisville-NYC art-punk-rockers continues to exist bafflingly outside of time - so when better than 42 years after initial release to reissue their album debut on vinyl? New listeners will find, in addition to the roiling compulsion of its odd, dance-damaged clockwork and synthesis of feral and aestheticized values, a refined understanding of the width and breadth of "post-punk" music, from any era, known or unknown.

Gal Costa - Gal Costa LP (Vampisoul)

Released in 1969, Gal Costa is the album that cemented Gal as one of the boldest voices of Brazil's Tropicalia movement - and it still sounds thrillingly alive today. Coming right after the genre-shaking Tropicália ou Panis et Circencis, this LP captures a moment when Brazilian music was breaking rules, blending psychedelia, rock, samba, and poetic experimentation into something totally new.

Jacques Coursil - Black Suite LP (BYG)

First released in 1971, Jacques Coursil's Black Suite remains one of the boldest expressions of the Black Diaspora's creative and political awakening. Recorded in Paris in 1969, this visionary work now returns in a newly restored and remastered edition. Featuring a transatlantic ensemble - Jacques Coursil, Anthony Braxton, Arthur Jones, Burton Greene, Beb Guérin, and Claude Delcloo - Black Suite bridges the radical spirit of the American avant-garde and the intellectual fire of postcolonial Europe. Across two long, meditative movements, Coursil transforms jazz into a language of liberation, evoking the writings of Frantz Fanon, Léopold Sédar Senghor, and Aimé Césaire as well as the fierce energy of the Civil Rights era.

The Damned - Strawberries CD (BMG)

Strawberries For Pigs, as the album was originally entitled, was The Damned's fifth studio album, and was released in 1982 by Bronze Records. Describing the album, Trouser Press wrote, "Eclectic and inconsistent but well-produced and boasting some fine tunes, Strawberries shows Sensible's increasing pop prominence and Vanian's willingness to explore a stylistic palette with no debt to punk."

Disclosure - Caracal 2xLP (Capitol)

Following the success of their first album Settle, Disclosure expanded their sound on Caracal with a smoother, more R&B influenced approach. This 10th Anniversary Edition is available for the first time as a limited edition Zoetrope 2LP, housed in a gatefold die-cut sleeve. Each side is inspired by the original album artwork and campaign poster from the time, using the caracal cat and the featured vocalists' illustrations to create animated movement across the discs as they spin.

Geese - Live at Third Man Records LP (Third Man)

Just weeks before unveiling their highly anticipated third studio album Getting Killed, NYC's Geese took the stage at The Blue Room at Third Man Records in Nashville to debut the record in full. The special performance - recorded live, direct-to-acetate - captured the band's raw intensity and the electricity of a sold-out crowd hanging on every note. This one-of-a-kind live recording bottles the energy, urgency, and excitement surrounding one of the most talked-about bands of the moment.

Various Artists - JUNGLIST! Old Skool Ragga, D&B, Jungle CD/2xLP (Soul Jazz)

A heavyweight new selection of classic and rare original jungle and features Krome & Time, Cutty Ranks, M-Beat, Bizzy B, Lemon D, Top Cat and more. Junglist! tells the story of how jungle and reggae came together to produce some of the heaviest tunes ever made. All these tracks date from 1993-95, at the height of jungle. Rarities include Bizzy B & TDK's 'Big Things' (currently £350 on discogs) only ever released on white label.

Kishi Bashi - Sonderlust 2xCD/2xLP (Joyful Noise)

10th anniversary reissue. A decade ago, Kishi Bashi found himself creatively and emotionally depleted after years of touring behind his acclaimed albums 151a and Lighght. The orchestral exuberance that once defined his sound had begun to fade, leading him to question his artistic purpose. Out of that exhaustion came Sonderlust (2016), a deeply personal reinvention marked by vulnerability, analog warmth, and spiritual honesty. Stepping away from ornate violin loops, Ishibashi embraced vintage synths and stripped-down textures, creating a record that shimmered with soulful, human energy. 2-disc reissue includes a disc of demo versions. [Gold and white vinyl pressing.]

Lights - A6EXTENDED 2xLP (Lights Music)

This new edition of the album is released as part of the Original Jazz Classics Series on 180-gram vinyl pressed at RTI with all-analog mastering from the original tapes at Cohearent Audio and presented in a Stoughton tip-on jacket.

Van Morrison - Moondance LP (Rhino)

Moondance is the brighter, more accessible counterpart to Astral Weeks: Van Morrison's first major commercial success that keeps the earlier album's spiritual depth while shifting from bleak intensity to themes of renewal and redemption. Light, soulful, and jazz-inflected, it celebrates nature and possibility-from the nostalgic "And It Stoned Me" to the nocturnal title track and the optimism of "Brand New Day." Highlights include the incantatory "Caravan" and the transcendent "Into the Mystic," often seen as the defining moment of Morrison's artistry. Lacquers cut by Matthew Lutthans at Sterling Sound from the best available sources. 180 gram Rhino Reserve pressing.

Willie Nelson - Country Music 2xLP (Hightone Records)

Country Music sees the legendary Willie Nelson interpret traditional country standards for an album The Washington Post hails "a calm, contemplative, and remarkably consistent album." Oscar Peterson - Affinity LP (Verve)

Affinity captures a studio session from September 1962 in Chicago, featuring Peterson on piano alongside his long-time trio partners Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums). The album offers a refined selection of standards delivered with the assured interplay that defined the Peterson/Brown/Thigpen trio. Peterson's first recorded take on the Bill Evans classic "Waltz For Debby" is a lyrical, nuanced performance - and "Gravy Waltz," (co-written by Ray Brown,) showcases the trio's rhythmic drive and subtle groove. As a whole, Affinity is a tasteful, well-crafted example of Peterson's work in the early 1960s - a strong trio recording that reflects his continued commitment to swing, subtlety, and ensemble balance. Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Oscar Peterson - Oscar Peterson Trio Plus One LP (Verve)

An August 1964 New York session that pairs Peterson's established trio - Ray Brown (bass) and Ed Thigpen (drums) - with guest Clark Terry (trumpet/flugelhorn). It marks a clear moment in Peterson's shift from constant trio touring to more focused studio work with outside collaborators. The trio plays with its usual cohesion, giving Terry space to add horn, and occasional "mumbles" phrasing. Key tracks include "Brotherhood of Man," noted for its tight structure and balanced solos, and "Jim," highlighting the blend of Terry's tone with Peterson's understated approach. The album stands as a concise document of two major jazz figures working in a small group setting during a period when studio sessions were becoming more polished and deliberate. Verve Acoustic Sounds Series features transfers from analog tapes and remastered 180-gram vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

The album also featured contributions from Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Doris Troy. Presented on limited edition purple vinyl through Dark Horse Records.

Billy Preston - Encouraging Words LP (Dark Horse)

Billy Preston's fifth studio album, Encouraging Words, was released in September 1970 through Apple Records. It marked his second and final project for the Beatles' label before signing with A&M Records. Co-produced by Preston and George Harrison, the album featured the first released versions of Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" and "My Sweet Lord," appearing two months ahead of Harrison's own recordings on his landmark triple album, All Things Must Pass. Preston's take on "My Sweet Lord" was issued as a single and reached #90 on the Billboard Hot 100 in early 1971, though the album itself did not chart in the US or UK. While commercially overlooked, Encouraging Words has since been praised by some critics as one of Apple's strongest non-Beatles releases. Presented on limited edition gold vinyl through Dark Horse Records.
