Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Antibalas - Hourglass LP (Daptone Records)

With Hourglass, Antibalas returns to its instrumental roots, drawing on compositions written by several current and emeritus members of the group. "Hourglass" begins with a plaintive and ecstatic tenor saxophone solo before digging into an intense 12-8 groove. The group pivots with “Lo-Life” highlighting the groupʼs ability to swing a lá Machito or the 1970s Ghanaian dance band leaders like Gyedu Blay-Ambolley. Others like “Solace,” “Escape” and “La Ceiba,” conjure echoes of the classic Lagos afrobeat sound, albeit spoken with a Brooklyn accent. “Oasis,” the albumʼs finale, is a step into a psychedelic unknown future, with a deep sense of liberatory funk eternally at its core. [Indie exclusive random color vinyl pressing. CD edition due out November 21.]

Avatar - Don't Go In The Forest CD (Black Waltz)

Latest masterpiece from avant metal band Avatar. Strange times call for a strange band. With a life long commitment to the misfit arts, Avatar delves deep into the collective subconscious. They travel beyond the realms of flesh and far past the spiritual barriers broken in past works. No matter how many times they were warned, they keep treading deeper into the woods. They lay a soft gaze upon terrifying, almost shapeless inner landscapes, and they have a damn good time doing it. They hit you over the head with so much frenetic insanity, but all the while keeping it melodic like a great Iron Maiden album.

The Belair Lip Bombs - Again CD/LP (Third Man)

Again is the follow-up to the Melbourne-based four-piece's 2023 debut, Lush Life, a “punchy, hook-laden rock record…straightforward in sound but borderline unassailable in its construction” (The Guardian). Again marks a new chapter for Australia’s best-kept secret, who have been building a loyal local following since they first formed eight years ago with their earnestness and ultra-sticky power-pop song structures. In mapping out what would become Again, the band merged their individual influences more than ever to craft a no-skips collection of DIY indie-rock anthems. Again was produced by the band, Nao Anzai (The Teskey Brothers), and Joe White (Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever), marking the first time the Belair Lip Bombs worked with a producer and adding a fresh coat of polish across 10 rollicking new tracks.

Bloom - The Light We Chase LP (Pure Noise)

Bloom's latest album finds the Australian metalcore outfit expanding their sound like never before, pushing into more melodic and experimental territory without losing their bite. Produced by Sam Bassal (Ocean Grove) and featuring a guest spot from Pat Miranda of Movements, the record captures a band fully in stride after years of building a dedicated following through relentless touring and acclaimed past releases. Written during a period of personal and creative upheaval, The Light We Chase brings together the band's most ambitious ideas with a clarity and force that proves why they're one of the most exciting names in heavy music today. [Split red/black vinyl pressing.]

Cochemea - Vol III: Ancestros Futuros LP (Daptone)

The 3rd and final chapter in Cochemea's epic quest to explore and express the spiritual connection between his art and ancestry. For Vol 3: Ancestros Futuros, Cochemea entrusted his vision to a core group of longtime collaborators—a powerful octet composed of New York-based percussionists and members of Daptone’s famed rhythm section. Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco Mann) reprised his role as producer, recording and mixing the album live to 8-track analog tape. Cochemea continues to push the boundaries of his sound, blending past, present, and future into a ritual offering—an evolving sonic narrative where memory, survival and creativity converge. [Indie exclusive transparent crimson vinyl.]

Carlos Dafé - Jazz is Dead Vol. 25 LP (Jazz is Dead)

Carlos Dafé, born in Vila Isabel, Rio de Janeiro, grew up surrounded by music and poetry. In the 1970s, Dafé became a pillar of Brazil's Black music movement, alongside Tim Maia, Cassiano, Wilson Simonal, and Banda Black Rio. Known as "The Prince of Soul," a title bestowed by Nelson Motta, Dafé brought samba, soul, and funk into harmony. Dafe was introduced to Adrian Younge by Arthur Verocai, leading to their collaboration on Jazz is Dead 025, on which Carlos Dafé reaffirms his legacy while venturing into uncharted musical territory. The album celebrates Dafé's extraordinary ability to bridge the past and present, blending soul, samba, and funk with contemporary experimentation. His story, voice, and artistry continue to inspire, making him not only a cornerstone of Brazilian Black music but a timeless figure in global music history.

Florence + the Machine - Everybody Scream CD/2xLP (Republic)

Florence Welch wrote and produced Everybody Scream over the past two years with a close-knit circle of collaborators including Mark Bowen of IDLES, Aaron Dessner, and Mitski. After needing lifesaving surgery on the Dance Fever Tour, Florence’s recovery took her down the path of spiritual mysticism, witchcraft and folk horror as she felt the limits of her body and explored what it means to be “healed.” Everybody Scream treads through womanhood, partnership, aging and dying; exposing the murky in the mundane. Available as an indie-exclusive red marble vinyl edition, a translucent turquoise vinyl "Dead Bluebell" edition, and an indie exclusive CD with alternate artwork.

Goon - Dream 3 CD/LP (Born Losers Records)

Step into the surreal world of Dream 3, the latest album from LA-based psych-rock outfit Goon. Blurring the lines between dreams and daylight, Dream 3 is a sonic odyssey that fuses woozy melodies, gritty textures, and haunting lyricism into a landscape both tender and unpredictable. With each track, Goon invites you deeper into their unique brand of lo-fi mysticism—equal parts beauty and distortion, chaos and calm. Whether you're drifting or digging in, Dream 3 is the kind of dream you won’t want to wake up from. [Vinyl re-press due November 7.]

Greensky Bluegrass - XXV CD/2xLP (Big Blue Zoo)

In celebration of the band's 25th anniversary, Greensky Bluegrass release an album of new versions of fan favorites from their celebrated catalog. Special guest artists are featured on some of the tracks, such as Sam Bush on "Can't Stop Now," Billy Strings on "Reverend," and Nathaniel Rateliff on "Past My Prime," among others. Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quintet have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Throughout the years, they've earned critical acclaim from the likes of Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone, who hailed them as "representing the genre for a whole new generation." [Indie exclusive maroon vinyl pressing.]

Guided by Voices - Thick Rich and Delicious CD/LP (GBV Inc)

Robert Pollard: "I'm a student of hooks. That perfect combination of a lyric and a chord pattern that gives you that chill up the back of your spine." Thick Rich And Delicious overflows with hooks. It plays through front-to-back like a power pop classic, but don't misconstrue pop for soft. The basic tracks were cut live and hot to tape and are presented with minimal overdubs. The band recorded in a Brooklyn studio at extreme volumes, conjuring the spontaneity and electric energy of their legendary live show. Complimenting Pollard's lead vocals, harmonies are sung by Grammy-nominated Bobby Bare Jr and Pollard (aka "The Self-Righteous Bros"). The sound delivers on the album's titular promise-thick, rich and delicious. Pollard combines a new batch of songs with a basket of unrecorded gems dating back to the band's nascent years. The chorus of "Oxford Talawanda" contains a never-used hook that Pollard has been singing for nearly his entire life. With Thick Rich And Delicious, you can get that satisfaction.

Her New Knife - chrome is lullaby deluxe LP (Winspear/Julia's War)

Her New Knife is a shoegaze/alternative band based out of Philadelphia, PA. The band released 'chrome is lullaby' last year via tastemaker label Julia's War Recordings. The EP captures a raw, vulnerable allure, offering fans of shoegaze and post-punk a profound connection to their unique sound. After a one-off Björk cover ("Pagan Poetry"), the band now returns with a 6-song remix EP, featuring remixes from TAGABOW, Sword II, Frost Children, and more. The physical version of the release 'chrome is lullaby deluxe' features their 'chrome is lullaby' EP on side A and their corresponding remixes on side B.

keiyaA - hooke's law CD/LP (XL Recordings)

After five years of navigating loss, grief, and anger, Chicago-born, NYC-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer keiyaA emerges in the light of reinvention and healing, shaped by years of solitude spent in the unending tide of mess and renewal, returning to share her findings with unapologetic clarity on her long-awaited sophomore album hooke’s law. Known for her genre-defying blend of jazz, R&B, hip-hop, and experimental music and penetrating explorations of Black womanhood and liberation, rich harmonies, and fearless experimentation, keiyaA reintroduces her artistry with the same emotional intensity and sonic innovation that defined her 2020 debut Forever, Ya Girl, arriving in the wake of her first theatrical stage play, milk thot.

Kneecap - Sayonara / The Recap 12" (Heavenly)

When it came to following up "sound of the summer so far" single "The Recap" Ft. Mozey, Kneecap had it in their heads that they wanted to make a proper 100% rave festival banger. A few days in the studio with one of the masters of that art form - Orbital's Paul Hartnoll - and the Belfast (and Derry) three piece emerge with "Sayonara," an absolute classic of the genre - a mind pounding, drum heavy, relentless club monster of a single. "Having worked on the Orbital track Belfast for the fantastic KNEECAP film, I was delighted to be asked by the lads to help them make a rave festival banger. They loved the track and did it proud with their lyrics - it was all so easy and natural, just as a good collaboration should be."

Mark William Lewis - Mark William Lewis CD (A24 Music)

Recently released on vinyl, now available on CD. Already deemed one of the best releases of 2025 (Vulture), Mark William Lewis' timeless self-titled album moves between nostalgic, deep-rooted poems and upbeat, indie rock grooves. Presented as A24 Music's first independent artist release.

Jamie Lidell & Luke Schneider - A Companion For The Spaces Between Dreams LP (Northern Spy Records)

A rare ambient record that moves you from the inside out. Luke Schneider and Jamie Lidell conjure a tactile, slow-motion sound bath from processed pedal steel, composed to accompany psychedelic-assisted journeys but resonant far beyond. Each tone blooms like a breath held too long, then released into the ether. For fans of Kali Malone, Steve Roach, or the sensation of your body dissolving into light.

One of Nine - Dawn of the Iron Shadow CD/LP (Profound Lore)

North Carolina's One of Nine play JRR Tolkien-inspired majestic black metal and are the most prominent Tolkien / Lord of the Rings black metal band since the legendary Summoning. Their sophomore album Dawn of the Iron Shadow follows their 2023 debut Eternal Sorcery which laid the foundation for One of Nine trodding their way to the forefront of the new breed of US black metal. With Dawn of the Iron Shadow (which is graced by cover art courtesy of legendary Tolkien artist Ted Nasmith), One of Nine elevate their black metal sorcery to a more epic and glorious plateau-one that is more expanded in its vision of grandeur and scope through its symphonic and grandiloquent magnificence.

Charlie Overman - Charlie Overman LP (Soul Step Records)

Kentucky-grown indie country tunes for fans of Sturgill Simpson, Hayes Carll, and Tyler Childers. Charlie Overman is Kentucky to his core. Charlie's detail in his songwriting has strong John Prine influences and showcases skills that far outpace his age, and he's backed up by some of Kentucky's best pickers on this LP. Come on and take a trip from Pikeville to Paducah as you fall in love with Charlie's new and emerging voice in the country music scene.

Jeremy Pinnell - Decades LP (Sofaburn)

Years before releasing OH/KY - a debut album built on the borderline between Rust Belt roots music and raw, unflinching country - Jeremy Pinnell grew up within reach of the Ohio River, listening to a musical soundtrack as broad as midwestern skies. Merle Haggard. Concrete Blonde. Tom Petty. AC/DC. Pinnell digs deep into those hook-heavy beginnings with Decades, his fourth full length release. It's the most melodic album of his acclaimed career, produced by two-time GRAMMY winner Shooter Jennings and influenced by the radio-friendly choruses he heard as a teenager. "I love hooks," Pinnell says unapologetically. "I love big, melodic songs that talk about serious things. That's what I wanted to do with Decades: share intimate observations about myself and others in a hooky, positive way."

Primitive Man - Observance CD/2xLP (Relapse)

Primitive Man return with their most crushing album to date, Observance. After twelve years at the forefront of underground music, doom metal outfit Primitive Man takes merciless aim at the plentiful ills that besiege the world around them, and in the process of doing so do not spare themselves from their flagellating tongue-lashings. With motifs and symbols recurring throughout the lyrics and artwork (also created by McCarthy), and drawing influence from the work of Tongo Eisen-Martin - specifically Blood on the Fog - McCarthy doesn't offer answers, he only seeks to share his experiences. Personal and professional pitfalls are explored against the backdrop of a broken social contract that is decimating the lives of working class citizens. While party politics dominate the media, a more insidious divide preoccupies McCarthy as he is haunted by techno feudalism and the future of human rights and social unrest. [Indie exclusive gold and black marble vinyl.]

Pulse Emitter - Tide Pools LP (Hausu Mountain)

Portland based producer / synthesist Daryl Groetsch composes music under the moniker Pulse Emitter. Channeling his love and mastery of styles ranging from new age to Berlin school kosmische to drone to progressive electronic music to noise akin to junk floating through deep space, Groetsch crafts emotionally resonant synth pieces teeming with diverse melodic architectures and textural details. A mainstay of the American experimental underground for over two decades, he has released dozens of albums of his exploratory and ever-evolving output as Pulse Emitter. Tide Pools, Groetsch’s new LP on Hausu Mountain, follows the relatively more languid ambient strains of his work found on Swirlings with a dizzying excursion into kinetic rhythms and fast-morphing song structures. Groetsch himself describes the album as an attempt “to explore the deep emotions possible from jazz harmony, manifest the rhythmic complexity always chattering around in my head, and push my music somewhere I haven’t.” [Clear blue vinyl pressing.]

Quintron & Miss Pussycat - Chrystal Crunchy 12" (Rhinestone)

Chrystal Crunchy is a 12-inch 45rpm clubhouse slammer featuring “I’ve Got a Guy 4 That”, Quintron’s ode to America’s secret but necessary cash-only sub-economy. The title track sees Miss Pussycat step out from behind the puppet theater with a barrage of Casio keyboards to play and sing the theme song from her latest puppet show, Party Planning for Animals. Side two opens with a homo-psychotic remix by New Orleans native (NYC dipped) musician Rhodes Murphy, morphing Quintron’s worker-tribute into some 90s Manhattan ketamine sex club. “Rotten Egg” is House music about not wanting to have children. Jake Orrall (Jeff The Brotherhood) closes out the EP with a goopy fat knob remix.

claire rousay - A Little Death LP (Thrill Jockey)

A prolific multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer, rousay gracefully crafts boundaryless music, collaging a wealth of found sounds and field recordings with earthy strings, stately piano, and processed instrumentation. Her music has evolved from confessional to conversational and excavates the rich emotional essence of each passage. Her work as both archivist and adept arranger and orchestrator merge sublimely into deeply honest and engrossing music. On a little death, rousay’s blend of pop sensibility and compositional acumen turn abstracted sounds into tangible feelings, its warm, glimmering glow coalescing sensually with the darkness. The process of composing a little death felt like a homecoming for rousay after the more pop-oriented song forms of 2024’s sentiment.

Saintseneca - Highwallow & Supermoon Songs 2xLP (Lame-O/Run for Cover)

Saintseneca's triumphant return-and their most expansive album to date. A 21-track double LP brimming with emotional depth and sonic adventure, this marks the band's first release with Lame-O Records and a defining chapter in their evolution. Bandleader Zac Little, long praised for his poetic lyricism and inventive arrangements, emerged from a period of creative burnout with renewed purpose. Inspired by a rediscovered joy in visual art and color, the songs on Highwallow... feel more found than written - organic, dreamlike, and alive. Recorded at Little's home studio and produced with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Rilo Kiley), the album bridges folk, shoegaze, and experimental pop. This is a major moment for the band and a collector's dream -rich in mythology, sound, and story. [Green and orange color vinyl pressing.]

Nick Shoulders - Refugia Blues CD/LP (Gar Hole Records)

Refugia Blues, the fifth album from Nick Shoulders, is a record of big ideas and small, intimate moments. These nine songs are rooted in the stylings of Southern traditional music. Sparse, timeless, and unamplified, they're older than the sounds Shoulders saluted on albums like 2023's All Bad, with its loud, whooping anthems for roadhouses and sweaty dancehalls. Here, Shoulders isn't shouting over a band. Rather, he's exploring another side of his craft by stepping up to a ribbon microphone as a solo performer, delivering each song with acoustic instruments and a voice that's equal parts country croon, Appalachian yodel, and high-lonesome field holler. As he explains it, Refugia Blues isn't just a call to action; it's a call to rest, too. [Indie exclusive bronze color vinyl.]

TX2 - The Ghost of LA CD/LP (Hopeless Records)

Rising out of the shadows of Fort Collins, Colorado, TX2 brings an unmatchable intensity in his music through the form of powerful raw lyrics and explosive performances. After struggling for so many years as an artist, TX2 used his pain as fuel and finally found his sound. 'Ghost of LA' is the story of a closeted gay man who moves to LA with his girlfriend and watches his dreams slowly shatter. For Fans Of: Ice Nine Kills, Falling in Reverse, Lorna Shore. [Ghost white vinyl pressing.]

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Curse LP (Jagjaguwar)

UMO's 'Curse' EP reflects these cursed times we find ourselves in. Taking inspiration from Italian horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, the six songs on the release are as cathartic a listen as the band has ever recorded. Featuring both abrasive, Black Sabbath inspired riffs on "Boys with the Characteristics of Wolves" as well as the laid back, intricate guitar playing UMO is maybe most famous for on "Death Comes from the Sky", the Curse EP is the perfect soundtrack to your next confrontation with the void.

Verses GT - Verses GT LP (LuckyMe)

The debut album from the duo of electronic producers Jacques Greene + Nosaj Thing. Verses GT is the project, the group, the album, the live show, and the moving image—an all encompassing banner for a new collaborative world. There's a hazy, meditative weight to Verses GT, not in an overtly emotional way, but as the result of intention and purpose. The album is coupled with an understated confidence to strip things back, while the intrinsic duality of both artists as Verses GT means the album also surges with the energy of empathetic, connected body-music. Features guest spots from George Riley, Kučka, and TYSON. [Transparent vinyl pressing.]

Coil - Live One 2xLP (Retractor)

Live One is the legendary recording of Coil's much anticipated performance in April of 2000 at London's Royal Festival Hall (as part of Julian Cope's “Cornucopea“ mini festival). With a line-up of John Balance, Peter “Sleazy“ Christopherson, Thighpaulsandra and Ossian Brown, COIL took the RFH stage decked out in their custom designed fluffy polar Teletubby suits to perform a supremely hypnotic set, somewhat reminiscent of their seminal Time Machines release but adding variation and tension largely absent from that drone masterpiece. Balance's vocal delivery on “Queens of the Circulating Library“ is still a very controlled but effective affair and quite different from his later manic outbursts.

Bootsy Collins - Fresh Outta 'P' University CD/2xLP (Rhino)

Fresh Outta 'P' University is Bootsy Collins' fourth solo album, released in 1997, and it celebrates his unmistakable P-Funk sound. The album is a funky journey through humorous lyrics and groovy basslines, all marked by Bootsy's unique style. The album solidified Bootsy's reputation as one of funk's most important figures, and his creative energy is palpable in every song. Fresh Outta 'P' University is a must-listen for any funk enthusiast looking to get swept away by good vibes and danceable rhythms. After being out of print for 20 years, this essential funk masterpiece is now available as a 2x180g LP and CD reissue, ready to get the party started once again.

Converge / Coalesce - Live at CBGBs 2xLP (Deathwish)

Proceeds from this release will be donated to the Hall family in perpetuity." [Limited edition lime green vinyl pressing.]

Cowboy Junkies - One Soul Now CD (Cooking Vinyl)

Recently reissued on vinyl, now available on CD. Originally released in 2004, Cowboy Junkies' ninth studio album One Soul Now draws together all the wisdom, passion, skill and insight collected during almost 20 years of playing, writing, touring, recording and living together as a band. Following the group’s acclaimed 2001 release Open, the 10 songs that make up One Soul Now marked an ambitious departure for the group; it was the first time Cowboy Junkies had recorded entirely on their own, without the mediation of an outside producer or engineer.

Demian - Demian LP (Riding Easy)

The lone album under the name Demian from the San Antonio, Texas-based heavy psych band, first known as Bubble Puppy. The album was recorded live in studio in one late-night session and found the band aiming for pop hit success, using proto hard rock skills in a radio friendly way without compromising the heavy guitar moves. The vocals have echoes of the earlier Bubble Puppy style in spots but are more melodic with vibrant harmonies reminiscent of Moby Grape, Buffalo Springfield, or James Gang. Demian is deadly hard rock, a perfectly organized vibe straddling live energy and crafted itinerary, amongst the first obscure major label killers that commanded premium $$ with collectors even way back in the late ‘70s.

Depeche Mode - Some Great Reward CD/LP (Sony Legacy)

In 1985 the Effigies released their post-punk debut "Fly On A Wire". Departing from their punk roots to experiment with new rhythms and expanded guitar complexities, the record brought the band to a wider audience, out of the mosh pit and onto the dance floor, featuring a cover of Joy Division's "No Love Lost" long before others attempted it. The band is now proud to release the remastered 40th Anniversary Edition originally recorded and mixed by the lauded British sound engineer Ian Burgess.

Faces - Early Steps CD/LP (Rhino)

Mick Giacchino - The Penguin O.S.T. 2xLP (Mutant)

Mutant, in partnership with WaterTower Music are proud to present the premiere physical release of Mick Giacchino's score to the critically acclaimed and Award-winning limited series The Penguin. Following the events of the 2022 feature film The Batman, The Penguin has the unenviable task of bringing a prestige television elevation to one of the most iconic comic-book villains of all time. Thankfully Mick Giacchino (Star Wars: Skeleton Crew), who did additional music for the film as well, found a way to bridge the gap from the more heightened comic-book elements of the previous chapter, and grounds them in the grimy lived in character study that showrunner Lauren LeFranc and executive producer Matt Reeves have crafted for this series. Frantic, chaotic like the titular character itself, Mick's score brings together elevated string quartets and percussion made from literal trash-cans, waltzing and occasionally crashing between worlds of high society and low-level crime. It's a brilliantly designed score that rests comfortably in the cannon of great Batman-music, while playing with the conventions of what these types of stories can be.

Mick Giacchino - Star Wars: Skeleton Crew 2xCD (Mutant)

Jon Watts and Christopher Ford (Spider-Man: Homecoming) have meticulously crafted a tale of four kids on the adventure of a lifetime through a far, far away world of grown-ups. It's a winning and clever homage to the 80's Amblin era style of family adventures, that feels at times like what it was like to play Star Warsin your backyard, or living room as a child. Mick Giacchino (The Penguin) knows this better than anyone - giving weight and sincerity to a story that is equal parts joyful, scary and fun. The score is full of life, and bombast and a swashbuckling energy that one of the best collection of modern Star Wars themes to date.

JJ Grey & Mofro - Orange Blossoms 2xLP (Alligator Records)
