Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Courtney Marie Andrews - Valentine CD/LP (Loose Future)

Courtney Marie Andrews has long been celebrated as an artist who challenges herself, and who finds new interplays of folk and Americana.  Also a vivid poet and accomplished painter, she brings a multidisciplinary richness to her work that shines throughout her 9th studio album, Valentine. Valentine is Andrews's most sonically explorative record - she plays flute, high strung guitars, myriad synths, and draws heavy inspiration from her art outside of music. Co-produced with Jerry Bernhardt and recorded almost entirely to tape, the album features complete in-studio performances that prize raw performance rather than perfection. Andrews' voice is gorgeous and acrobatic always, but on Valentine it finds a new depth, an assertiveness that brings new dimension to its biggest anthems and its softest moments. [Indie exclusive gold vinyl pressing.]

Armor for Sleep - There Is No Memory LP (Equal Vision Records)

Released on CD in November, now available on vinyl. The seminal New Jersey-based post-hardcore band's followup to 2022's The Rain Museum, There Is No Memory was recorded with Sam Guaiana (Silverstein, The Devil Wears Prada, Between You and Me) and is a collection of songs that force the listener to question the very nature of their existence, of what makes us the people we are. While The Rain Museum was a record written in the throes of the dissolution of the Armor For Sleep frontman Ben Jorgensen’s eight-year marriage and his subsequent divorce, its setting was more fictional and metaphorical. By comparison, There Is No Memory is much more literal, much more grounded in the real world, and much closer to the bone. [Indie exclusive opaque red vinyl pressing.]

Cavetown - Running with Scissors CD/LP (Futures)

Cavetown returns with his fourth album, Running With Scissors, a record that pairs his signature lo-fi intimacy with fuller, more expansive indie rock arrangements. Threaded with gentle acoustic textures, shimmering melodies, and moments of raw catharsis, the album captures both the comfort and turbulence of growing into yourself. [Indie exclusive sky blue vinyl pressing.]

Mike Delevante - September Days CD (New Shot Records)

Not since the days of “Roger McGuinn’s Back From Rio” has an album sounded so fresh and captivating, rich in that unmistakable melodic atmosphere, displaying that beautiful Rickenbacker 12 String jingle jangle sound throughout. Mike is a seasoned Nashville Champion, he’s half of the famed duo The Delevantes with albums on Rounder and Capitol and his vocal and writing abilities are top notch. And Garry Tallent’s on bass here!

Gluecifer - Same Drug New High CD/LP (Steamhammer)

At a time when the world's inflationary desire for change seems to stop at nothing and no one, Gluecifer appear to be the proverbial solid rock. The Norwegian band, one of the most successful in their country, who immediately returned to their former strength after their reunion in spring 2018, continue to play their passionate melange of irresistible punk rock, traditional rock 'n' roll and dazzling glam elements just the way their fans want to hear it. The new studio album, 'Same Drug New High', the group's first in more than twenty years, leaves no doubt that founding members Biff Malibu (vocals) and Captain Poon (guitar) plus long-standing bandmates Raldo Useless (guitar), Danny Young (drums), and Peter Larsson (bass) sound not only more mature and skilled, but also more versatile and determined than ever.

Jana Horn - Jana Horn CD/LP (No Quarter)

The 3rd album from Jana Horn was written in New York and recorded in the Texas desert. Horn went to Sonic Ranch studio with her trio (Jade Guterman - bass / Adam Jones - drums) to record her self-titled record, comprised of 10 sonic landscapes which don't quite sound like they're from anywhere. Past comparisons to Yo La Tengo and Phil Elverum are still apt on "Love" and "All in bet", while spare post-punk rhythms drive "Designer" and "Don't Think." In 2023 The New Yorker stated: "Horn's work aligns with a fraternity of the lonely that cuts across genres: traces of Young Marble Giants, Syd Barrett, and Broadcast all waft through her songs."

Hunny - SPIRIT! LP (Epitaph)

SPIRIT!, the third LP from Hunny, is about embracing the weird - an album born from uncertainty and built on instinct. It's a testament to breaking free, starting over, and tuning out the noise. Now the solo project of longtime frontman Jason Yarger, Hunny has shed its past shape to become something more fully itself. SPIRIT! doesn't reinvent the wheel so much as keep it spinning forward. Across 15 tracks, the album-co-produced by Yarger and former bassist Kevin Grimmett with drums by former drummer Joey Anderson-leans into the sounds that have always lit Hunny's fuse: hooky post-punk, gleaming synths, and shout-along choruses. But it also pushes further-into abstraction, playfulness, and freedom.

The James Hunter Six - Off the Fence CD/LP (Easy Eye Sound)

The James Hunter Six delivers another dose of timeless rhythm & soul. British singer, songwriter and Grammy-nominated James Hunter has been a legendary fixture in the scene for over three decades with his gritty voice and sharp songwriting earning him acclaim around the world. Off The Fence features a duet with longtime collaborator Van Morrison ("Ain't That A Trip"), marking a full-circle moment for the artist hailed by MOJO magazine as "The United Kingdom's Greatest Soul Singer." [Teal color vinyl pressing.]

Imarhan - Essam LP (City Slang)

From the heart of Tamanrasset in South Algeria, Imarhan transcend Tuareg tradition, weaving hypnotic synths into desert blues. The result is a timeless work—deeply respectful of their roots, yet alive with a stirring sense of modernity. [Blue "Petrol" color vinyl pressing.]

Langhorne Slim - The Dreamin' Kind CD/LP (Dualtone)

Leave it to Langhorne Slim - a pioneer of raw, rule-breaking Americana for more than two decades - to reach far beyond the genre he helped inspire. The Dreamin' Kind finds the Nashville transplant strapping on an electric guitar and embracing his longtime love of larger-than-life rock & roll. With its chugging power chords, 1970s-sized riffs, and richly layered arrangements, The Dreamin' Kind is fueled not only by sheer amplification, but by the soul-baring songwriting that's become Slim's calling card, too. The result is the more explorative and expansive album of Slim's career: a record made for rock clubs, campfires, and garages alike, produced by Greta Van Fleet's Sam Kiszka, and anchored by a lifelong desire to break down new walls. [While supplies last, all vinyl copies at Grimey's are signed by Langhorne!]

Richard Marx - After Hours CD/LP (Richard Marx, Inc.)

Richard Marx's "After Hours" reimagines the Great American Songbook for a new generation. Recorded entirely live with a 24-piece orchestra, the album features Marx's original compositions alongside classic standards-all performed in complete takes, just as Sinatra and Martin once did. Featuring collaborations with Rod Stewart, Kenny G, and Chris Botti, "After Hours" showcases Marx's timeless vocal prowess in a bold creative departure from his four-decade pop/rock legacy.

Moor Mother - Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes LP (MDG)

The primal force of the spoken word collides with evocative music that pierces the heart: the irrepressible power of Moor Mother's apocalyptic album is visceral. This spellbinding symphonic version created for the Beethoven Orchestra Bonn and the string quintet Wooden Elephant by Ian Anderson, the impassioned opus by the radical American poet becomes a grandiose Gesamtkunstwerk that touches the soul.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Night After Night LP (NGDB Records)

Recently released on vinyl, now available on vinyl. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band formed in 1966 as a Long Beach, California jug band that scored its first charting single in 1967 and embarked on a very successful self-propelled ride through folk, country, rock 'n' roll, pop, bluegrass, and Americana. Released digitally in October 2025, the Night After Night EP was recorded at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville, Tennessee, and The Tractor Shed Studio in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and was mixed by Sean Sullivan alongside the band's cofounder Jeff Hanna and Jerry Douglas. The new EP is a family affair for Hanna who co-wrote three of the new songs.

Tyler Ramsey & Carl Broemel - Celestun CD/LP (Duo Quest Records)

Having been friends and occasional touring partners for well over a decade, Asheville, NC-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Tyler Ramsey and My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel have at long last made their full-length recorded debut with Celestun. The album encapsulates the two veteran guitarist-songwriters' mutual admiration and effortless compatibility as they swap and share nine new songs of dazzling dexterity and grace recorded almost entirely on acoustic guitars. Stark yet intricately arranged songs such as the cinematic tracks "Nevermind" and "Flying Things" (featuring additional vocals from singing siblings The Secret Sisters), and an incandescent version of Neil Young's "Sail Away" are rich with dazzling dexterity and grace, Ramsey's nimble fingerstyle picking and Broemel's classically trained virtuosity aligning to create a predominantly instrumental song cycle of rustic beauty and atmospheric power. [Indie exclusive gold vinyl pressing.]

Sha La Das - Your Picture LP (Diamond West)

The Sha La Das are Bill Schalda and his talented sons Paul, Will and Carmine, originating from Staten Island, NY. Your Picture, the Sha La Das' second album and the first release on producer Tom Brenneck's own label, Diamond West Records, is yet another singular testament to the stirring power of blood harmony and a celebration of the enduring love story between Bill and the family matriarch, Linda. Traces of old memories flicker through Your Picture. Bill's classic songwriting and lush vocal arrangements get whirled into new territory, updating doo-wop with the bottom-heavy groove and swirling pop of Brenneck's lean, spacious production. "We brought in some psychedelic sounds and drew inspiration from deep soul records to the Beatles and Beach Boys alike," Brenneck says.

Sleaford Mods - The Demise of Planet X CD/LP (Rough Trade)

The Demise of Planet X is Andrew Fearn and Jason Williamson's most expansive and ambitious release to date as Sleaford Mods. Boasting the duo's most varied and expressive musical approach so far, it charts, critiques and satirises our times, while offering a universal cry of anger and release of energy that pushes against the encroaching cultural darkness. [Indie exclusive neon green & black marble vinyl pressing.]

Together Pangea - Eat Myself LP (Nettwerk)

Los Angeles-based indie rock trio Together Pangea's highly-anticipated sixth studio album 'Eat Myself' follows a long gap since their stellar 2021 effort 'DYE'. Sonically, it's a far cry from the band's earlier garage rock and surf roots. Instead, it offers a sharp distillation of their artistic range, including an emphasis on their heavier, grunge-leaning tendencies. Songs such as "Sunkin" and the title track "Eat Myself" could easily be mistaken for lost relics from Seattle's grunge era of the nineties. Together Pangea also explores new territory: wall-of-sound shoegaze ("Little Demon," "Molly Said"), mid-2000s indie rock ("Like Your Father"), and infectious synth pop ("Burn the Hillside").

μ-Ziq - 1979 2xLP (Balmat)

Two years after he first appeared on Balmat with 1977, Mike Paradinas returns with 1979. Both capture the Planet Mu head venturing into the wilderness, seeking something -- half-formed memories, thoughts caught in midair -- in some of the most abstract, searching music he has released. Just like 1977, 1979 surveys a synth-heavy array of ethereal soundscapes, ominous crevasses, and strange, psychedelic fugues. It's not strictly an ambient record, but it's close, as close as this famously mutable artist ever comes to inhabiting a particular genre. There are echoes of classic braindance and isolationist ambient and golden-age IDM; there are easter eggs and recurring themes and hidden symmetries. Despite what the title might suggest, it's less a trip back in time than a portal to another universe, a destination for (to?) which only Mike Paradinas knows the exact coordinates.

Xiu Xiu - Xiu Mutha F***in' Xiu Vol. 1 CD/LP (Polyvinyl)

On Xiu Xiu's new covers album, Jamie Stewart and Angela Seo pay homage to songs that have profoundly influenced them as music lovers and songwriters. This collection, taken from the band's ongoing Bandcamp subscription series, features tracks previously exclusive to Bandcamp, now available on vinyl and streaming for the first time. The album showcases Xiu Xiu's unique interpretations of iconic songs such as "Psycho Killer" (Talking Heads), "In Dreams" (Roy Orbison), "Some Things Last A Long Time" (Daniel Johnston), "I Put a Spell on You" (Screamin' Jay Hawkins) and many more. These renditions are a heartfelt "thank you" to the original compositions, while simultaneously serving as a deep dive into the musicality and greatness of these influential works. [Red ripple color vinyl pressing.]

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

Barry Adamson - Scala!!! O.S.T. LP (Mute)

Barry Adamson, original member of Magazine and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and a celebrated solo artist and composer, returns with the soundtrack to Scala!!!, the acclaimed documentary chronicling the history of London's most infamous independent cinema. Known for his film work, including collaborations with David Lynch, Adamson brings his trademark blend of noir, jazz, funk and atmosphere to a score that's as evocative as the Scala itself. The album captures the cinema's spirit: late nights, sticky floors, sleazy underground screenings, and the intoxicating world of subversive art. Adamson conjures moods that shift from brooding and cinematic to playful and chaotic, echoing the wild programming and cultural rebellion the Scala embodied.

Shye Ben Tzur, Jonny Greenwood, & the Rajasthan Express - Junun 2xLP (World Circuit)

Released in 2015, Junun was recorded in a makeshift studio within the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India. Radiohead's longtime producer Nigel Godrich worked on the album. Junun (meaning "mania" or "the madness of love") received widespread critical acclaim. The group also supported Radiohead's 2018 Moon Shaped Pool tour, performing as Junun. The album features Ben Tzur's compositions, which incorporate devotional Sufi qawwal musicians singing in Urdu and Hebrew. Jonny Greenwood contributed guitar, bass, keyboards, ondes Martenot, and programming, using chords sparingly and focusing on North Indian ragas. The recording sought to capture the "roughness" of Indian music, avoiding the high fidelity often found in world music.

Kelan Phil Cohran - African Skies CD/LP (Listening Position)

Stones Throw Records debuts new imprint Listening Position with the long-awaited reissue of Kelan Phil Cohran & Legacy’s spiritual jazz masterpiece African Skies. Kelan Phil Cohran was a member of the pioneering afro-futurist Sun Ra Arkestra and appears on several of their most acclaimed recordings. He released several albums of his own compositions in the 1960s with his band The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, including a revelatory tribute to Malcom X – a well-known collectible for jazz aficionados. Cohran was a mentor to artists such as Earth, Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan and The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, a Chicago-based brass band whose members included 8 of his sons. A holy grail for jazz collectors, African Skies has been out of print since its initial pressing of 1000 vinyl copies in 2010.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Radio Transmissions 6xCD (Blue-Line)

This 6 CD box set contains legendary radio recordings.

Various Artists - Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! Vol. 4 2xLP (Vampisoul)

The historical origins of cumbia are nebulous and imprecise. The mythology surrounding it suggests an ancient past when Amerindian, African and European musical sounds were mixed together. After digging deep into the overwhelming archives of Discos Fuentes, Codiscos and Discos MAG in previous volumes, this fourth instalment in the series Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! comprises 28 Colombian cumbia bangers for the dance floor from the deep vaults of Discos Tropical, all of them originally released between 1960 and 1984. Discos Tropical was a Barranquilla-based label founded in the mid-1940s by Luis Emilio Fortou Pereira, a visionary who helped define Colombian dancing habits and tastes from the previous century. Until the late '50s, most cumbias were orchestral-based. After the mid-'60s, the big bands gradually fell into decline, but the popular demand for tropical music did not. Facing this situation, the major record companies created smaller-format groups with one particular feature: they mixed accordion music with brass bands. This new volume of Cumbia Cumbia Cumbia!!! combines well-known classics and rarities that are difficult to find in their original formats.

Death Cult - Paradise Live CD/2xLP (Beggars Banquet)

[Translucent ruby color vinyl pressing.]

Stan Hubbs - Crystal LP (Numero)

Epically torched psychedelia from deep in the private mind garden. Tracked in a remote cabin in the California redwoods, Stan Hubbs's middle aged, 1982 brain-fryer Crystal is the missing link between In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and homegrown harpsichord hallucinogens. For the 10th anniversary of the original album, Archy Marshall (a.k.a. King Krule) releases a brand-new instrumental edition of the cult favorite A New Place 2 Drown. Upon its original release in 2015, the album accompanied a wider collaborative art exhibition between Archy and his brother Jack Marshall. A New Place 2 Down mines the deep creative connection between the two brothers, drawing from Jack's visual art discipline and Archy's musical work under the moniker King Krule to create something inimitable and entirely unique as a result.

Mndsgn - Body Wash 2xLP (Stones Throw)

Producer Mndsgn's second album for Stones Throw, Body Wash was originally released in September 2016. Influences here include the likes of early SOLAR records material, Leon Sylvers III, Kashif, and Dave Grusin. These artists, Mndsgn says, "embodied that potent feeling in the early 80s boogie/funk/soul/jazz/fusion wave." He adds, "I was also digging back into some early 90s R&B sounds and started really imagining what it would be like if I had mashed the two eras together." He explains Body Wash as "a soul record that plays with nostalgic elements in a very dynamic & positive way. Think about it as a box of crayons for you to draw emotions with." [Limited edition lavender vinyl pressing.]

William Onyeabor - Atomic Bomb LP (Luaka Bop)

Reissue of the Nigerian artist's second studio album, originally released in 1978. [Neutron orange vinyl pressing.]

Gary Peacock - Oracle LP (ECM)

With so much virtuosity living inside bassist Gary Peacock and guitarist Ralph Towner, one might expect from this duo a showcase of lively showmanship. And while this is most certainly at its heart, on the whole we are given an understated album recorded out of deepest respect for its listeners. The improv is robust yet tender and marked by a distinct patina around the edges. Oracle is like the ocean: we know its overall shape, but the movement of every wave is at the whim of something unseen that flows through all of us. ECM Luminesscence series release.

Toni Tornado - Toni Tornado LP (Vampisoul)
Originally released in 1972, Toni Tornado's self-titled debut is a landmark in Brazilian soul and funk -- a gritty, groovy record that helped define the sound of the Black Rio movement. Blending deep soul, psychedelic funk, and bold orchestration, this album channels the revolutionary energy of James Brown with the tropical swagger of Rio's streets. From the urgent rhythms of "Torniente" to the undeniable strut of "Mané Beleza" and "Tornado," Toni's music pulses with a fierce sense of pride and liberation. It's the sound of a new cultural identity taking shape -- where African-American soul met Afro-Brazilian reality.

Frank Zappa - Radio Transmissions 8xCD (Blue-Line)

On December 4, 1993, the world lost one of the most creative minds of the 20th century, not to mention a passionate activist. Arch surrealist and prog satirist, virtuoso and give-a-dream iconoclast, Frank Zappa blazed his own trail across genres and eras like no-one else. Manically driven, extravagantly gifted, utterly unique. This 8 disc box set contains radio broadcast recordings from 1969 - 1980, capture a sonic mass of creative genius, awash with ideas that could help shape the future of mankind.
