Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Taylor Acorn - Poster Child CD/LP (Fearless)

After nine years of releasing her music independently, pop-rocker Taylor Acorn releases her debut album with Fearless. "When people listen to this album, I want them to feel like they're back in a time that makes them feel good" she says. That sense of optimism is evident from the infectious opener "People Pleaser" to the outro closer "Masquerade." She effortlessly expresses both power and vulnerability with her voice, depending on which she's trying to articulate in the moment. [Lemonade color vinyl pressing.]

Adebowale & the Pioneers - Kilofese / Unnecessary Visitor (Bamia Remix) 7" (Colemine)

"Kilofese" is Yoruba for "Do what you want to do" in regards to freedom from political oppression, expressed by Adebowale Osunnibu, his piercing back-up vocalists, and roaring horn section. This full-force Afrobeat tune confronts these struggles of the everyday person in Lagos in a way that is understood globally; for the farmers, the doctors, the teachers, for you. Unnecessary Visitor (Bamia Remix) flips a B-side into a disco-influenced dance tune that fuses frustration with oppression with the inspiration to move forward.

Aerosmith & YUNGBLUD - One More Time CD/LP (Capitol)

Following an iconic tribute performance at the 2025 VMAs, rock legends Aerosmith unite with rising force YUNGBLUD on 'One More Time.' The 5-track EP features vocals from Steven Tyler and YUNGBLUD throughout, including 4 new songs written by Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, YUNGBLUD, and Matt Schwartz, plus a reimagined version of the Aerosmith classic "Back In the Saddle." 12" vinyl edition has an etched B-side.

Ana Frango Elétrico - A Sua Diversão / Não Tem Nada Não 7" (Psychic Hotline)

A new 7" collaboration with Brazilian legend Marcos Valle.

Antibalas - Hourglass CD (Daptone Records)

Recently released on vinyl, now available on CD. With Hourglass, Antibalas returns to its instrumental roots, drawing on compositions written by several current and emeritus members of the group. "Hourglass" begins with a plaintive and ecstatic tenor saxophone solo before digging into an intense 12-8 groove. The group pivots with “Lo-Life” highlighting the groupʼs ability to swing a lá Machito or the 1970s Ghanaian dance band leaders like Gyedu Blay-Ambolley. Others like “Solace,” “Escape” and “La Ceiba,” conjure echoes of the classic Lagos afrobeat sound, albeit spoken with a Brooklyn accent. “Oasis,” the albumʼs finale, is a step into a psychedelic unknown future, with a deep sense of liberatory funk eternally at its core.

Bell Witch & Aerial Ruin - Stygian Bough Volume II CD/2xLP (Profound Lore)

On Stygian Bough Volume II, the collaboration between Bell Witch (Dylan Desmond, Jesse Shreibman) and Aerial Ruin (Erik Moggridge) enlivens its unbodied presence resembling both collaborating projects as a conduit in its own separate entity. The result is a commanding four songs steeped in mysticism, legend, and the examination of the connective threads that shape and influence the culture, mythology, and customs of all human societies throughout time in unique, localized ways.

Chat Pile / Hayden Pedigo - In the Earth Again CD/LP (The Flenser/Computer Students)

A collaboration forged in the heart of the American Midwest, In The Earth Again unites Oklahoma City's noise rock institution Chat Pile with Texas/Oklahoma's visionary guitarist and composer Hayden Pedigo. What began as a casual split release idea spiraled into a thirty-six-minute album that threads their contrasting sensibilities into something entirely new. Pedigo's panoramic, primitive guitar, meets Chat Pile's industrial decay, creating a record that explores unknown emotional registers and atmospheric depth for both. In The Earth Again sounds like a post-apocalyptic transmission from rural nowhere. Instead of making concessions, the five artists work as a single unit, and each decision is made in support of the greater vision. The result is both intimate and expansive, a tribute to the modern wasteland. [Available on indie exclusive oxblood vinyl, cobalt blue vinyl, and standard black vinyl.]

Dijon - Baby CD/LP (Warner)

Dijon's sophomore album, Baby, examines new fatherhood and the mania of domesticity. From song-to-song, Dijon captures the moments of ecstasy and tragedy that inevitably follow life-altering changes. [Indie exclusive silver vinyl pressing.]

Hannah Frances - Nested in Tangles LP (Fire Talk)

Following her critically acclaimed 2024 album 'Keeper of the Shepherd,' Hannah Frances rises from the elegy of her decaying roots to reach through the tangled canopy of limbs toward a life and love beyond rupture on her new album 'Nested in Tangles.' Weaving avant-folk, progressive rock, and jazz—composer, vocalist, guitarist, and poet Frances cascades between the deft intimacy and the expansive magnificence of her interior world with the lucidity and incisiveness of both fire and water. Anchored with her signature vocal prowess and percussive polyrhythmic fingerpicking that she established on Keeper of the Shepherd, Frances evolves and challenges her own narratives and musicality opening with the titular instrumental piece that veers into spoken word poetry leading into “Life’s Work” which was co-produced and arranged by Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear, along with “The Space Between.”

The Garden - Six Desperate Ballads LP (Vada Vada)

The Garden's Six Desperate Ballads EP, originally released digitally in October 2024, makes its vinyl debut with an exclusive limited-edition pink marble variant. This first pressing also includes an eight-page lyric booklet insert.

Haley Heynderickx & Max Garcia Conover - What of Our Nature LP (Fat Possum)

Audrey Hobert - Who's the Clown? LP (RCA)

Debut album from the singer-songwriter also known for co-writing several songs on Gracie Abrams' 2024 album 'The Secret of Us.' 'Who's the Clown?' features breakout hit "Sue me," among 11 other bona fide pop tracks. It was brought to life with close collaborator and producer, Ricky Gourmet.

Amy Jay - Mnemonics LP (Mother West)

Recently released on CD, now available on vinyl. Throughout Mnemonics, Amy Jay explores what makes the vulnerable acceptable, as well as the Joycean concept of what makes the universal specific: How do you love yourself when you don't feel likable? How do you face pieces of your hidden self courageously? Jay assembled a crew of stellar local musicians with national track records to help take her sketches of folk songs into fully formed indie rock panoramas. With long-time producer/engineer Jon Seale (Mason Jar Music) at the helm and guitarist Sam Skinner (Pinegrove, Fenne Lily), keyboardist Andrew Freedman (Michael Mayo, Ryan Beatty), Jay also enlisted bassists Jeremy McDonald and Margaux (Katy Kirby) and drummers Jason Burger (Big Thief) and Jordan Rose (Maggie Rogers) to round out her sound.

Magic Fig - Valerian Tea LP (Exploding in Sound)

On the swift follow-up to their 2024 EP, San Francisco’s Magic Fig take that blueprint of their sound and add a little more of everything: colour and creativity, scope and sonic exploration. Formed of ten exuberant new songs, Valerian Tea sees the psych-pop supergroup (ft. members of The Umbrellas, Healing Potpourri, Almond Joy, Whitney's Playland, and Blades of Joy) dive even further into the lush and layered sound that defined last year’s breakthrough, opening up a whole new realm to be explored. Built from a swirling mass of instrumentation, which includes piano, synthesizers, glockenspiel, organ, 12-string acoustic and electric guitar, Valerian Tea is the sound of a band making for themselves a bold new world; a tumbling place of dizzying dynamics and overwhelmingly colorful vision.

Marauder - Flaschentrager LP (Feel It)

With its twirling surrealist melodies, bricolage song structure, and adroit rhythmic changes, Leipzig's Maraudeur have made an album suffused with the spontaneity of an art school party that somehow by the end of the night evolved into making a record. The trilling laughs and clinking glasses are transformed into bright synth lines and guitar riffs that are at times wiry and then, sometimes with little warning, hard and angular. Underneath this is the roiling chatter of Devo-funk infused bass and skittish bap-bap-boom drums. Shouty, echo-y vocals, covering a range of topics-some deadly serious, others less so-cap the 4am anything-can-happen-so-what-will-happen-next feel to the entire record.

Moms with Bangs - Do What's Delicious 7" (Alternative Tentacles)

Born out of the Northern California DIY scene, Moms With Bangs started as a ragtag group of high schoolers looking to build a musical community filled with loud, chaotic, unfiltered energy. Quickly becoming known for their loud experimental sound and unhinged live shows. Moms With Bangs become legendary for being high-volume, high-energy, and having zero barrier between them and their audience. It was these qualities that caught the attention of Jello Biafra himself, who was so impressed he signed them to his label Alternative Tentacles Records, making Moms With Bangs the youngest signing in the history of the label. The two tracks on “Do What’s Delicious” capture the throttling high energy rhythms of bands like Thee Oh Sees, while also showcasing an affinity for the off-kilter groove of bands like Deerhoof or Black Midi.

Old Crow Medicine Show - OCMS XMAS CD/LP (Hartland Records)

"We're in the joy business," says frontman Ketch Secor, who launched the Grammy-winning band in 1998. "From the very start, a lot of the virtues of Christmas - the revelry, the singalongs, the happiness - have been present in our show." Nowhere is that more apparent than OCMS XMAS, the group's first holiday album. Decorated with seasonal spirit and string-band stomp, it's the rare breed of Christmas record that packs a punch all year long, shining new light on the band's chart-topping version of American roots music. Old Crow Medicine Show aren't just reinterpreting their favorite yuletide standards; they're adding new songs to the canon, too, from "Jolly Man" - a country-blues number inspired by Mississippi John Hurt and laced with harmonica, sleigh bells, and resonator guitar - to the Zydeco-flavored "All About A Baby." A real legacy, indeed. [Indie exclusive green vinyl pressing. Don't miss our holiday event with OCMS on Tuesday December 2nd!]

Oneohtrix Point Never - Tranquilizer CD/2xLP (Warp)

Tranquilizer isn’t the sound of sedation but resurfacing. Daniel Lopatin isn’t condemning our need for escape, but exploring what happens after. The record maps a movement from weightless calm into something more grounded, the necessary cycle of withdrawal and return that keeps us sane in a world both overwhelming and mundane. We plummet from the watery bliss of “Lifeworld” into the mournful melancholy of “Cherry Blue” and spastic grooves of “Rodl Glide.” As always with OPN, the real collides with the unreal. Listen closely and you will hear the scrape of fingers on a fretboard, a stone sliding across a dungeon floor, the squeak of a door opening. His music has never been an abstract color field; it has weight, edges, shadows. Tranquilizer feels like falling out of a dream you can still touch. [Available on indie exclusive clear vinyl and standard black vinyl.]

Racing Mount Pleasant - Racing Mount Pleasant 2xLP (R&R)

Sophomore, self-titled album from Michigan based seven piece band, Racing Mount Pleasant, formerly known as Kingfisher. Emotional, transcendental, lush.

The Reds, Pinks and Purples - The Past is a Garden I Never Fed LP (Fire Records)

Having penned over 200 songs in the last six years, The Reds, Pinks and Purples release a collection of tracks previously unreleased on physical format that continues to romanticise the wonders and woes of the world. Set to a soundtrack that swerves between the dark days of Television Personalities and Byrdsian twang to the Jarvis Cocker-styled rhetoric and vocal tenderness of 'Richard In the Age Of The Corporation' with hints of everything from Husker Du's fuzzed splendour to the chiming majesty of The Chameleons, it's an empowering listen.

Jonathan Richman - Only Frozen Sky Anyway CD (Blue Arrow)

18th studio album from legendary singer of The Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman. Produced by Talking Heads member Jerry Harrison.

John Scofield - Memories of Home CD (ECM Records)

Guitarist John Scofield and bassist Dave Holland, two of jazz's contemporary masters, have played together over the years in contexts including projects with Herbie Hancock and Joe Henderson and a spirited co-led band with Joe Lovano and Al Foster. Memories of Home is their first duo album. The album includes Scofield's "Icons at the Fair," "Meant to Be," "Mine Are Blues," "Memorette," and "Easy for You," and Holland's "Mr. B," "Not for Nothin'," "You I Love" and "Memories of Home."

Umphrey's McGee - Blueprints 2xLP (Diggers Factory)

With over 2,800 live shows, 14 studio albums, and more than 27 years of musical evolution, Umphrey's McGee continues to defy classification and expectation. Genre lines blur as progressive rock, funk, jazz, metal, electronic, and beyond converge into something unmistakably Umphrey's. Their latest project, Blueprints, offers a rare glimpse into the band's creative DNA. Revisiting early demos, reimagined ideas, and unreleased material, the album bridges past and present, inviting listeners to trace the evolution of songs from their raw inception to their fully realized form. Blueprints stands as both a celebration of Umphrey's history and a testament to their relentless drive to explore new musical terrain.

Rufus Wainwright With The Pacific Jazz Orchestra - I'm A Stranger Here Myself: Wainwright Does Weill - CD/2xLP (Rock & Roll Credit)

Rufus Wainwright's I'm a Stranger Here Myself - Wainwright Does Weill is a compelling tribute album that delves into the rich and complex songbook of German-American composer Kurt Weill. Known for his theatrical flair and vocal prowess, Wainwright brings a unique interpretation to Weill's compositions, which are celebrated for their fusion of classical, cabaret, and jazz elements. Premiering in May 2023 at New York City's Café Carlyle, "Wainwright Does Weill" marked Wainwright's first extensive exploration of Weill's repertoire.

Lainey Wilson - Peace, Love & Cowboys (Holiday Edition) CD/7"/12"

A reigning CMA Entertainer of the Year and GRAMMY Award-winner, Lainey Wilson has carved out her own lane with a sound that fuses country, rock and soul - anchored in raw storytelling and unshakable truth. Her rise has been powered by #1 singles, sold-out tours across the U.S. and abroad, and a breakout role on Paramount's Yellowstone, cementing her as both a cultural force and a fan favorite. Now, Wilson brings her signature spirit to the holiday season with Peace Love & Cowboys (Holiday Edition), a festive spin on her trademark style, and a very special duet of "Let It Snow" alongside the legendary Bing Crosby. The collaboration highlights her ability to honor tradition while pushing country music into new spaces - bridging generations and creating music that feels both timeless and fresh. In late 1964, ABC-Paramount prepared to release Ray Charles Sings For You. The album was assigned catalog number ABC-500, with liner notes and artwork completed. However, the release was shelved in favor of issuing Ray Charles Live in Concert in January 1965. As a result, Ray Charles Sings For You remained unreleased, and its tracks were scattered across various compilations over the years. Now, for the first time ever, this lost album is officially restored and released as the artist originally intended. The Descendents - I Don't Want to Grow Up CD/LP/cassette (Org Music)

Arriving three years after they burst on to the scene with their iconic debut, Descendents' I Don't Want To Grow Up was originally released on D. Boon and Mike Watt's New Alliance Records. The album was recorded after vocalist Milo Aukerman returned from college, and is the first of two Descendents releases to feature guitarist Ray Cooper. It found the band leaning even harder into their penchant for irresistible melodies, often with a much brighter sound than what could be found on Milo Goes To College. This sonic evolution helped the band evade falling into a sophomore slump, and only strengthened their already-cemented legacy. [Two vinyl editions are available: a yellow vinyl pressing with the original artwork, and a "Punk Note" edition with alternate artwork.]

Paris 1942 - Paris 1942 CD/2xLP (Superior Viaduct)

Difficult as it may be to imagine, there was a time when Sun City Girls did not exist. Prior to the Bishop brothers teaming up with drummer/shaman Charlie Gocher to form SCG's classic trio lineup, there were various ad-hoc assemblages of local Phoenix-area freaks and weirdos-groups which existed only long enough to play a single gig, open mic or house party before disbanding without a trace. Hatched from this milieu was Paris 1942, a short-lived band formed by guitarist Jesse Srogoncik that included Alan Bishop, Richard Bishop and former Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker. While those expecting P42's music to sound like a tantalizing combination of Sun City Girls' iconoclastic hoodoo havoc and the Velvets' primal drug-chug certainly won't be disappointed, Paris 1942 more often than not transcends even these nearly impossible expectations. Srogoncik's songs, in particular, are a revelation, displaying as much in common with the exuberant raunch of The Gun Club and the chapbook punk of Peter Laughner as they do any of the more obvious touchstones.

Zion I - Mind Over Matter 2xLP (Coalmine Records)

Mind Over Matter by Zion I stands as a powerful testament to the group’s innovation in hip-hop, but it carries a deeper weight following the untimely passing of Baba Zumbi in 2021. The 2000 release of Mind Over Matter combined Zumbi's socially conscious rhymes with producer Amp Live’s futuristic beats, creating a sound that was both ahead of its time and deeply rooted in the traditions of hip-hop. Tracks like the Planet Asia assisted “Critical” and “Inner Light” are emblematic of this balance, where complex lyricism meets genre - bending production. The album’s themes of self - awareness, community, and resilience resonate just as strongly today, showcasing Zion I’s unique ability to fuse the personal with the political in a way that feels both intimate and revolutionary.
