Randy Fox Excello Records Book Reading/Signing

  • Grimey's New and Preloved Music 1060 East Trinity Lane Nashville, TN, 37216 United States (map)

There's a killer new series of books called the RPM Series on the history of classic record labels and the first two to be released are books on Sub Pop Records and Shake Your Hips: The Excello Records Story, a history of the Nashville-based label that released the electrifying sounds of groovin' jump blues, Southern-fried rock & roll, fervent black gospel and simmering Louisiana swamp blues straight outta Music City USA in the '50s & '60s. Operating out of Ernie's Record Mart, Excello forged a partnership with 50,000 watt radio station WLAC which broadcast a clear-channel signal from dusk till dawn, captivating millions of teenagers and crossing racial boundary lines. Some of the artists who released records on Excello include Slim Harpo, Arthur Gunther, Lightnin' Slim and Lazy Lester. Some of the artists who covered their songs include Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Eric Clapton and more.

Through extensive research and interviews, author Randy Fox chronicles the tale of one of the most unusual record labels to emerge from the 1950s, while shedding new light on Nashville's rich history as much more than a country music town. Randy Fox will regale us with tales from his book about this inimitable label and Ron Wynn will conduct a Q & A, followed by questions from the audience and a book signing. Local DJ and avid record collector Paul Glavin (host of Eargasm on WXNA) will spin some of his copies of the original Excello records being discussed. This will be fun as all get-out and a wonderful opportunity to find out so much more about our great Music City. Don't miss. Oh yeah, we'll have #FreeBeer for those 21 and over.
