Colby Acuff – Western White Pines LP (SME Nashville)
Working with acclaimed producer/engineer Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Cody Jinks), Acuff's first major label project is in motion, recorded with a new team of top-flight talent at Nashville's Sound Emporium. Another batch of gritty, solo-written songs - plus the first ever co-writes of a promising career - it will help introduce a country talent as wild and free as the Idaho Mountains themselves.
Herb Alpert – Wish Upon A Star CD (Herb Alpert Presents)
What happens when you wish upon a star? You get new music from Herb Alpert, of course! The prolific trumpet player returns at age 88 with his new studio album (his 49th) Wish Upon A Star. Filled to the brim with new takes on classic songs we've known and loved for decades, this set of music continues to serve up the unmistakable trumpet playing of the Tijuana Brass master. Herb covers everything from Jerry Reed's "East Bound And Down" to Elvis' "(Marie's The Name) His Latest Flame" and the Beatles' "And I Love Her". Other hits include "Father And Son", "We've Only Just Begun" and the titular song "When You Wish Upon A Star".
Bahamas – Bootcut CD/LP (Republic)
Bahamas’ sixth full-length album, Bootcut, sees Afie Jurvanen lean into his (alt and old-time) country music influences. Produced by Grammy-nominated Robbie Lackritz (Jack Johnson, Peach Pit) and Dan Knobler (Allison Russell), the album features country legend (and current Eagle) Vince Gill, pedal-steel maestro Russ Pahl (Kenny Rogers), bassist Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), harmonica player Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) and many more. Baroness – Stone CD/2xCD/LP/Cassette (Abraxan Hymns)
The origins of Stone go back to 2020. It is not a pandemic record, but the core of it was written during its darkest days. Anxiety, relief, and resolve are stitched deeply throughout. When the foursome was isolated in Pennsylvania and New York, turning stems of music into full-fledged songs felt insurmountable. Barones toiled as the world roiled. Creativity fully flourished only when they escaped to an Airbnb in Barryville, a quaint hamlet on the New York/Pennsylvania border. The undulating "Beneath The Rose", the energetic drive of "Anodyne", the trad-metal burlof "Last Word", and the dynamic introspection of “Shine” rushed out, as did the motorik of “Choir” and the emotional heft of “Magnolia”. Stone was a sort of catharsis, a turning of the page, a middle finger to the suffocating insincerity of expectation. [The deluxe double-CD edition features six live tracks recorded in 2022. A variety of color vinyl variants themed after each song – including and indie store exclusive red pressing – were pressed.]
Madison Beer – Silence Between Songs CD/LP (Epic)
Silence Between Songs is Madison Beer's second major label full length release and a sonic departure from her previous efforts. In the artist's own words, "this album is more of a memoir. It's not really about one specific event, but more about specific things that have shaped me into the person that I am today." Featuring the singles "Home To Another One", "Dangerous", "Reckless", and "Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)", a beautiful interpretation of the Turtles classic "You Showed Me".

Bombino – Sahel CD/LP (Partisan)
Guitar luminary and Tuareg folk hero Omara “Bombino” Moctar knows the nomadic life well. Being constantly on the road for his music while also perpetually on the move throughout the Sahel region of Africa is the norm. So when the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt, Bombino found himself in an unfamiliar space: being in one place. What resulted was Sahel, the follow-up to 2018’s Deran, a record that turned Bombino into the first-ever Grammy-nominated artist from Niger. This new collection of songs, named after the African region spanning East-West from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, is Bombino’s most personal, powerful, and politically minded work to date. It’s also his most sonically diverse, a quality he set out to achieve from the start, and one that is meant to directly mirror the complex tapestry of cultures and people that make up the Sahel region itself. Briscoe – West Of It All CD/LP (ATO)
West Of It All, the debut album from Americana folk-rock band Briscoe, is a coming-of-age soundtrack set against the backdrop of the Texas Hill Country. Written in the Lone Star State and recorded in North Carolina, it's an album that charts its own musical geography, with production from Grammy-nominee Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Caamp, Nathaniel Rateliff) and adventurous songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation. Brothers Osborne – Brothers Osborne CD/LP (EMI Nashville)
The current CMA and ACM Duo Of The Year, Brothers Osborne release their fourth studio album. T.J. Osborne and John Osborne are back with their fourth full-length album, expanding their sound to incorporate synthesizers and a piano ballad! Brothers Osborne was produced by Mike Elizondo, known for his work with a wide range of talented artists including Sheryl Crow, Turnstile, Dr. Dre, Twenty One Pilots, and Lin-Manual Miranda, among others. Elizondo put together an A-list band of studio musicians to contribute to the record, including Paul McCartney’s drummer, Abe Laboriel Jr. Country music star Miranda Lambert serves as the only guest vocalist on the album, performing on “We Ain’t Good at Breaking Up,” which she co-wrote with Brothers Osborne and Jesse Frasure. Every song on Brothers Osborne was co-written by the brothers, including the single “Nobody’s Nobody,” (written with Elizondo and Kendell Marvel). [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

Dengue Fever – Ting Mong CD/LP (MRI)
Ting Mong is the sixth full-length album of new material from Cambodian/American band Dengue Fever, and their first album in more than eight years. In Khmer folklore, a Ting Mong is a decoy or mannequin, similar to a scarecrow, used to fight away evil spirits and plagues. On Ting Mong, Dengue Fever’s unmistakable amalgam of styles and musical traditions is at its most cohesive and prismatic. There’s Chhmon Nimol’s Cambodian identity, of course, in constant dialogue with the discursive playing of a tight band that has always proudly contained multitudes. Whether they’re evoking psychedelia or surf rock, Afro grooves or vintage soundtracks, there’s a dense, profound curiosity characterizing these musicians playing one solidly built on life experience.
Kurt Elling – SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree LP (Edition)
SuperBlue: The Iridescent Spree, the follow-up to the 2021 Grammy-nominated album SuperBlue by genre-bending trailblazers Kurt Elling & Charlie Hunter, sees the pair reunited with Corey Fonville and DJ Harrison for a kaleidoscopic collection of new songs, surprising covers, and dynamic reinvention.
Explosions In The Sky – End CD/LP/Cassette (Temporary Residence)
End, the enigmatic new album by Explosions In The Sky, was inspired by darkness, but became a loud, dramatic, wild rumination on life and death. “Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship. Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next,” says the band about the album. End is perhaps the “grandest” Explosions In The Sky album – melding the quiet restraint and crushing feel of their early recordings with the aural exploration and ornate experimentation of their later works (while incorporating their increasingly deep film and television scoring catalog). Fabricant – Drudge To The Thicket LP (Profound Lore)
Bay Area technical death metal entity Fabricant leverages any musical tool for their riff and song fabrication. Speed, stillness, technicality, simplicity, consonance, dissonance-are all at play for the express purpose of telling the stories of humanity's hubris, madness, and frailty. Fabricant glimpsed into this black vortex, extracted the raw materials of inspiration, and refined the chaos into the ten fully actualized death metal songs on their debut album Drudge To The Thicket.
Chilly Gonzales – French Kiss CD/LP (Gentle Threat)
Chilly Gonzales is as well known for his intimate approach to the piano through his Solo Piano album trilogy, for his talent as a showman performing in the philharmonic halls of Europe in slippers and robe, and for his collaborations with internationally renowned artists such as Feist, Drake, Jarvis Cocker and Daft Punk. He takes a new artistic turn with French Kiss, his first album written and performed in French.
Alex Hall – Side Effects Of The Heart LP (Monument)
Walking the line of modern and classic with his outlaw spirit and his heart of gold, Alex Hall brings a fresh sound to country music that transcends generational barriers. Raised on a horse farm in North Georgia, Hall's inspiration was born from country music legends Kris Kristofferson and Vince Gill, among others.
Chihei Hatakeyama - Hachirogata Lake LP (Field Records)
Matching expansive ambience with environmental sound, Chihei Hatakeyama's new album continues Field Records' exploration of Japan and the Netherland's shared approach to water management. Previously the second largest body of water in Japan, the government ordered extensive drainage work of Hachirogata Lake after the second world war. As a result, a new ecosystem was established as plants spread from surrounding areas, bringing with them a wider variety of birds and other wildlife. Combining field recordings from various locations around the lake with glacial expanses of droning synthesis and languid guitar, Hatakeyama creates a tangible environment which at once reflects the settings around the lake, while offering the listener any number of imagined scenes to observe in their mind's eye.
Will Johnson – No Ordinary Crown CD/LP (Keeled Scales)
Will Johnson's ninth solo album, No Ordinary Crown, hums with palpable motion. Travelers, runners, and conductors fill its lyrics, and gesticulating storms and emotional highs and lows seep through the instinctual quality of its rock 'n' roll performances. K. Flay – Mono CD/LP (Fuga)
K. Flay (full name Kristine Flaherty) returns with her latest studio album Mono. The album features 15 all new songs including "Raw Raw", "Shy" and "Punisher", as well as "Irish Goodbye", her collaboration with Vic Fuentes from Pierce The Veil. The album title Mono carries a special significance for K.Flay. It reflects her new sensory reality, as she experienced a sudden and complete hearing loss in her right ear due to a rare condition called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) and Labyrinthitis. Lusine – Long Light LP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)
Seattle-based producer Jeff McIlwain, aka Lusine, returns with his ninth full-length record, Long Light. A cited influence for myriad electronic artists including London's Loraine James and others, Lusine is known for visceral, kinetically-curious music that fuses techno, pop, and experimental composition. In recent years, McIlwain has pushed his craft skyward with more collaborative, song-forward work. Buffalo Nichols – The Fatalist LP (Fat Possum)
On his second album, The Fatalist, Carl "Buffalo" Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There's 808 programming, chopped up Charley Patton samples, washes of synth. There's a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols' vision for the blues is of a form of music that's intimately tied to everyday life in 2023, something that's reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present, and as such, it's a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today.
Carlos Niño and Friends – I’m Just Chillin’, On Fire 2xCD/2xLP (International Anthem)
Prolific percussionist/producer Carlos Niño's most singular, intentional work ever, featuring a vibrant and abundant gathering of ‘friends’. Featured artists across 80+ minutes of music include Kamasi Washington, Nate Mercereau, bubbling violinist/vocalist V.C.R, Photay, Deantoni Parks, Laraaji, Jamael Dean, and more, including André 3000, who makes an appearance on flutes. Alan Palomo – World Of Hassle 2xLP (Mom + Pop Music)
Alan Palomo (fka Neon Indian) is making his return this year with the brand new album World Of Hassle. As Neon Indian, Alan most recently released VEGA INTL. Night School in 2015 and Era Extraña in 2013. His 2009 debut record Psychic Chasms not only earned the musician a spot on numerous year-end lists, but assisted the forming of a genre that, though known by a few names now (hypnagogic pop, glo-fi, chillwave), summoned a very unique and specific electro-mangled sound. Palomo’s World Of Hassle is a Pynchonesque place, packed with characters and situations rendered in dreamily absurdist strokes.
Pretenders – Relentless CD/LP (Parlophone)
Arriving with the impulsiveness and attitude that at once defines the band's eternal spirit, Relentless is a clearly defined snapshot of where the Pretenders are in 2023. It's the second consecutive Pretenders album to be written as a collaboration between Chrissie Hynde and the band's resident guitar hero, James Walbourne. Especially sought after in his own right, having recorded with Dave Gahan, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Rails amongst many more. The album's 12 tracks feature what Chrissie describes as "The Pretenders Collective." This extended band features Walbourne (guitars), Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass) and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars). Relentless also features a long hoped-for collaboration with the esteemed composer Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead, The Smile), who provides the string arrangement and conducted the 12 Ensemble for the album's beautiful closing track, "I Think About You Daily". Corinne Bailey Rae – Black Rainbows CD/2xLP (Black Rainbows Music)
Black Rainbows is a musical project inspired by the objects and artworks collected by Theaster Gates at the Stoney Island Arts Bank in Chicago. Situated at the Great Grand Crossing neighborhoods of Chicago's South Side, Stoney Island Arts Bank is a cathedral to Black Art, a curated collection of Black archives comprising books, sculpture, records, furniture, and problematic objects from America's past. As well as being a site for archive, the Arts bank is also a place for convening. Bailey Rae attended The Black Artists Retreat there in 2017 and performed in the space. Wide ranging in its themes, Black Rainbows' subjects are drawn from encounters with objects in the Arts Bank. Sonically, the album is a multi-genre mix of the progressive R&B, neo soul sound that will be familiar to fans, but it also contains rock, jazz and electronic elements. Joshua Redman – Where Are We CD/LP (Blue Note)
Acclaimed saxophonist Joshua Redman makes his Blue Note debut with Where Are We, his first-ever vocal project which features vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Brian Blade plus special guests Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Joel Ross on vibraphone. At its core the album is both a celebration and critique of America—each song is about a specific geographical location in the United States—but it is also, to varying degrees, a ballads album, a standards album, an album of romantic longing, an album of social reflection, an album of melodic invention, and an album of improvisational adventure.

Shakey Graves, the brainchild of musician, actor, and artist Alejandro Rose-Garcia, returns with his fourth studio album Movie Of The Week, featuring the bona fide streaming hit "Ready Or Not (feat. Sierra Ferrell)".
Teddy Swims – I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) CD (WB)
Reigning from Atlanta, GA, vocal powerhouse Teddy Swims masterfully blends genres from pop, soul, hip-hop, to R&B. Corey Taylor – CMF2 CD/2xLP (BMG)

Beck, Bogert & Appice – Live In Japan 1973, Live In London 1974 4xCD/4xLP (Rhino)
Before his death in January, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck revisited concert recordings made by Beck, Bogert and Appice, the power trio he formed in 1972 with drummer/singer Carmine Appice and bassist/singer Tim Bogert. The live music captures the band at the beginning and end of its short-but-influential partnership, with two shows in Japan in 1973 and one of the group’s final performances in London a year later. All three band members were involved in creating Live In Japan 1973, Live In London 1974, and this collection is dedicated to Beck and Bogert, who died in 2023 and 2021, respectively. The set includes an expansive booklet with extended liner notes detailing the group’s history by music journalist/manager Bruce Pilato, along with memorabilia, archival photos, and a replica poster.

A 1962 set from the Roy Haynes Quartet which, at the time, consisted of the drummer, Henry Grimes on bass, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Roland Kirk on saxes, manzello, stritch and flutes. The album is a delightful mix of technique in arrangement and performance, with all the musicians delivering terrific work. Haynes' drumming is absolutely wonderful here, lightly dancing around the other instruments, Flanagan's piano playing is equally light and delicate, Grimes' bass work is outstanding, and Kirk's sax and flute work is as excellent as ever.

The Surrealists were formed by the Scientists' singer-songwriter-guitarist Kim Salmon in 1987, betwixt the last two tours by the original incarnation of that pathfinding Perth-bred band. The Surrealists had been dormant in recent years, as the bandleader focused his energy on recording and touring with a reunited lineup of the Scientists. In 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown settled around the globe, Salmon reconvened with bassist/baritone guitarist Stu Thomas and drummer Phil Collings, who had appeared on the Surrealists' 2010 release Grand Unifying Theory, the group's most recent record. As with that work, the new material was created live on the studio floor, and emphasized improvisation in both its structure and content.

Jimmy Smith – Midnight Special [Reissue/1961] LP (Blue Note)
It's a testament to Jimmy Smith's volcanic creativity that the Hammond B3 organ firebrand recorded not one but two soul jazz classics - Midnight Special and Back At The Chicken Shack - in a single day when he entered Van Gelder Studio on April 25, 1960, with Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums. Smith had been a self-taught pianist before abandoning the instrument in 1954 in favor of the organ, renting a Philadelphia warehouse, and woodshedding for a year until he emerged with a revolutionary style that immediately caught the ear Alfred Lion. The Blue Note boss dubbed him The Incredible Jimmy Smith and recorded the B3 innovator as frequently as he could between 1956-1963. Midnight Special opens with the soulful title track which chugs along at a laid-back pace giving ample space for Smith, Turrentine, and Burrell to state their case.
