[Indie store exclusive green vinyl.]

Finom – Not God LP (Joyful Noise)

Not God is the new album from Chicago's beloved two-headed monster, Finom (fka Ohmme). You can ask them to go into more detail about the boring reasons why they changed their name, but for now, the answer is going to be polite refusal. No. Co-fronted by Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, Finom's influences are vast and varied, and they put a premium on change. Produced by Jeff Tweedy in the Wilco Loft, Not God is a marvel of growth, a progression from the roots of this collaborative band whose history can be traced back to its improvised conception. This is owed in no small part to their hometown of Chicago, the life raft to so many persisters in musical adventurosity. That energy combined with Finom's dramatic vocal and musical gifts puts them in the peripherals of the legacies cemented by The Roches, Roxy Music, the B52s, Kate Bush, Cate Le Bon, and Wilco. [Limited edition red vinyl.]

Girl & Girl – Call A Doctor CD/LP (Sub Pop)

In one sense, it's easy for artists-songwriters, specifically-to express their feelings in their work. After all, that's what the lyrics are for! But it's much harder to convey emotional energy in how you play, slash at the guitar, and the structure of the music itself. That's precisely why Girl and Girl's Sub Pop debut, Call A Doctor, feels like such a vital, electrifying shock to the senses. Not since the early work of Car Seat Headrest or Conor Oberst's widescreen emotional brutality as Bright Eyes has indie rock managed to come across as this intimate and grandiose, as the Australian quartet led by Kai James lay a lifetime's worth of woes-mental health, the human race's planned obsolescence if you've been living on this cursed rock you know what we're getting at-across a canvas of indie rock that feels both timeless and in-the-moment. [Limited ‘Loser edition’ white vinyl.]

Fred Hersch – Silent, Listening LP (ECM)

Saxophone master Sean Khan presents a brand-new album project - The Modern Folk & Jazz Ensemble. The album explores the sounds of the late '60s and early '70s folk revival, recast and reimagined in a jazz setting with compositions by Pentangle, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, and Nick Drake. Featured guest singers include Pentangle lead singer Jacqui McShee, acclaimed singer-guitarist Rosie Taylor-Frater, and emerging artist Kindelan.

Lenny Kravitz – Blue Electric Light CD/2xLP (BMG)

Timeless. Explosive. Romantic. Inspiring. How else to characterize Blue Electric Light, Lenny Kravitz’s 12th studio album? Kravitz’s mastery of deep-soul rock ‘n’ roll is a long-established fact. As a relentless creative force—musician, writer, producer, actor, author, designer—he continues to be a global dynamic presence throughout music, art, and culture. Blue Electric Light is an impassioned suite of songs, that broadens this distinction and is the latest contribution of a man whose music—not to mention his singular style—continues to inspire millions all over the world. On the album, Kravitz's talents as a writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist resonate as he wrote and played most of the instruments himself, with longtime guitarist Craig Ross. [Indie store exclusive magenta and blue vinyl. Also available: a limited-edition picture disc vinyl version and a deluxe media book CD edition.]

La Luz – News Of The Universe CD/LP (Sub Pop)

"I was in a dream, but now I can see that change is the only law." With a credo adapted from science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, an album title from a collection of metaphysical poetry, and an expansion in consciousness brought on by personal crisis, guitarist and songwriter Shana Cleveland learns to embrace a changing world with unconditional love on News Of The Universe, the new full-length from California rock band La Luz. News Of The Universe is a record born of calamity, a work of dark, beautiful psychedelia reflecting Cleveland's experience of having her world blown apart by a breast cancer diagnosis just two years after the birth of her son. It's also a portrait of a band in flux, marking the first appearance for drummer Audrey Johnson and the final ones from longtime members bassist Lena Simon and keyboardist Alice Sandahl, whose contributions add a bittersweet edge to a record that is both elegy for an old world and cosmic road map to a strange new one. [Limited ‘Luzer edition’ orange crush vinyl.]

Machinedrum – 3FOR82 LP+MP3 (Ninja Tune)

Following last year's formidable 4#TRAX EP- a love letter to the TRAX community that helped shape a young Travis Stewart into the phenomenal producer we know today- Machinedrum returns with his first studio album since 2020, 3FOR82. 3FOR82 features an incredible cast of collaborators including the likes of Tinashe, Tanerélle, Duckwrth, Mick Jenkins, AKTHESAVIOR, KUČKA, deem spencer, Jesse Boykins III, Deniro Farrar & Topaz Jones. The record builds on the themes of reflection, this time a letter to his teenage self as he set out making music. John Mulaney – Baby J CD/2xLP (Drag City)

The Emmy-winning Comeback Kid himself comes back yet again with a blunt, brilliantly quotable stand-up special. Baby J takes the form of a wide-ranging conversation between John Mulaney, a kid in the balcony named Henry, and the rest of the sold-out crowd at Boston's Symphony Hall. John dominates the chat, of course - nobody would want it otherwise - but his cautionary tales might be a little TOO hilarious.

Municipal Waste – Tango & Thrash CDEP/12” (Nuclear Blast)

Municipal Waste made a name for themselves as a leading band of the thrash metal revival of the 2000s. Formed in 2001, the band is known for their energetic and humorous approach to crossover thrash.

[Limited edition coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Rotting Christ – Pro Xristoy CD/LP (Season Of Mist)

For over three decades, Tolis brothers Sakis and Themis have carved a blackened path through the metal world. Architects of the Hellenic black metal, Rotting Christ has been blending histrionic atmospheres, mesmerizing choirs, and neo-classical arrangements for 35 years. Now, the Greek metal legends present their 14th studio album: Pro Xristou. Translating to "Before Christ" in Greek, this album is a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who stood resilient against the Christian tide, safeguarding ancient values and knowledge. Dive deep into the legacies of figures like Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings through tracks such as "The Apostate" and "Ygdrassil". Pro Xristou encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ's signature style - a melodic symphony with moments of unyielding harshness.

El Michels Affair – Enter The 37th Chamber [Reissue/2009] LP (Fat Beats)

Originally released on Fat Beats Records in 2009, El Michels Affair's landmark album Enter the 37th Chamber is celebrating its 15th Anniversary in 2024. Featuring reinterpretations of hip-hop anthems from the Wu-Tang Clan, the album took stripped-down, raw hip hop bangers and flipped them into richly arranged instrumentals. Cover versions of tracks such as "C.R.E.A.M." and "Can It All Be So Simple" instantly sounded as vintage as the records that RZA had sampled to create the originals, with the familiar melodies and driving rhythms elevated by expertly arranged horns and strings. The gritty and bottom-heavy style of these analog recordings-dubbed "Cinematic Soul" - has been both widely celebrated and often imitated. Now 15 years on from its initial release, Enter the 37th Chamber has proven to be one of the true classic instrumental albums of its era, every bit as enduring as the music it had meant to pay homage to. Limited edition black & yellow pressing.

Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges – Play The Blues [Reissue/1959] LP (Verve)

Several times in his career, star alto-saxophone soloist Johnny Hodges struck out on his own, only to return each time to Duke Ellington's band. Critic Michael Ullman suggested that the blues classics chosen for this program may have been neutral ground, where Ellington's playing could come to the fore and Hodges' irrepressible sensuality could have free rein. This is one of the very best small-group records Ellington ever made - a perfectly integrated set of music that truly swings the blues.

Khanate – Capture & Release [Reissue/2006] CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
Khanate – Clean Hands Go Foul [Reissue/2009] CD/LP (Sacred Bones)

Largely recognized as their breakthrough album, Khanate was confident enough by the two-song, forty-minute Capture & Release (2005) to peel back its layers of thick mossy drone and reveal the minimalist underpinnings, a change either interpreted as maturity or an implied threat. "It's a grim, avant-garde exercise in tension and paranoia. Dense, leaden drones fill up the spaces between O'Malley's sparse, deeply sustained guitar chords. Vocalist Alan Dubin's anguished vocals seem to convey the tortures of the damned as if there were not a shred of hope left for existence in this world. Clean Hands Go Foul (2009) generously offers more of everything: voluminous drones, clashing dissonance, mysterious subharmonic swells, escalating terror, and environments drenched in heavy anticipatory dread. The final hour of the band's first decade sees Khanate, as always, making "music that, even in the realm of extreme music, is dark and distorted" (Pitchfork). Clean Hands Go Foul would be followed by the ultimate minimalism, as the Khanate entity sat shrouded in silence until the release of 2023's To Be Cruel. [Limited edition color vinyl: green; and gold nugget, respectively.]

The Opus song became the German language "Leben heißt Leben" and the English language "Opus Dei".
