Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Blondshell - If You Asked for a Picture CD/LP (Partisan)

If You Asked For A Picture, the 2nd album from Sabrina Teitelbaum, aka Blondshell, is a collection of songs from an artist at the peak of her powers. The album is alive with vital nuance both sonically and thematically, gesturing towards a deeper autobiographical story that taps into something painfully universal without being too overt. It's a no-skips, triumphant record that captures the unresolved process of figuring out who you are, too wise to suggest that it has a definitive answer. [Indie exclusive coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Car Seat Headrest - The Scholars CD/2xLP (Matador)

The first studio album from Car Seat Headrest in five years, ‘The Scholars.’ From Shakespeare to Mozart to classical opera, Car Seat Headrest’s Will Toledo pulled from the classics when devising the lyrics and story arc of ‘The Scholars,’ while the music draws, carefully, from classic rock story song cycles such as The Who’s ‘Tommy’ and David Bowie’s ‘Ziggy Stardust.’ “One thing that can be a struggle with rock operas is that the individual songs kind of get sacrificed for the flow of the plot,” Toledo notes. “I didn’t want to sacrifice that to make a very fluid narrative. And so this is sort of a middle ground where each song can be a character and it’s like each one is coming out on center stage and they have their song and dance.” While Car Seat Headrest started as Toledo’s solo project, the four-piece is now fully a band. “What we’ve been doing more of in recent years is just taking the pulses of each other.” says Toledo. “It didn’t really feel to me like things got in sync in an inner feeling way until this record, with that internal communal energy. And it’s become that band feeling for me in a much more realized way. That’s been a big journey.”

Eric Church - Evangeline vs. The Machine CD/LP (EMI Nashville)

Eric Church’s eighth studio album, Evangeline vs. The Machine features 8 new songs, including “Darkest Hour” and “Hands of Time.” A seven-time ACM Award-winner, four-time CMA Award-winner (including the highest honor for Entertainer of the Year) and 10-time GRAMMY-nominee, Church has amassed a passionate fan base around the globe known as the Church Choir, plus a critically acclaimed catalog of music.

Clem Snide - Oh Smokey LP (Foreign Leisure)

“With a slow hand and a tender heart Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman) layed down just about everything you hear on oh smokey. Why I merely stumbled in and sang my lines..like some pre-diabetic Frank Sinatra. Which is all to say, I did it my way...sad slow songs about God and death...and the soft surrender.” [Limited edition random color vinyl.]

Doctor Bionic - The Island of Doctor Bionic LP (Colemine)

The Island of Dr. Bionic is the third installment in Dr. Bionic's Terrestrial Radio series. It's a collection of instrumental fusion for fans of hip-hop, jazz, funk, and beyond. Grimez is the producer, mixer, and mastermind behind Dr. Bionic. He's a Cincinnati-based creator with a deep understanding of 90s hip-hop and DJ culture, and he draws inspiration from music of all kinds.

Dope Lemon - Golden Wolf LP (BMG)

Blending introspective reflection with expansive sonic landscapes, Golden Wolf offers a unique fusion of indie rock and psychedelic soul, showcasing Dope Lemon at his most honest and vulnerable yet. The album invites listeners to ponder the choices they've made, the roads they've left behind, and the ones still waiting ahead. Following four previous studio albums - including the ARIA-nominated Kimosab? - Golden Wolf peels back layers of memory and imagination, creating a rich, evocative experience. [Limited edition picture disc vinyl.]

Forced Down - Liberate LP (Southern Lord)

Forced Down was first created by Amenity vocalist: Mike Down and Pitchfork drummer: Joey Piro. The band was completed by vocalist Rob Base as well as members of other San Diego hardcore alumni including Scott Bartoloni from Heroin. Full of idealism, love and anger the band recorded (2) vinyl 7”s including their swansong double-7”: “Stifle”. The Forced Down mission statement reads: “As the social values in our society becomes more set in stone, the individual is forgotten. When what the individual stands for goes against the ideas of the mass, and is considered a threat to order, be it right or wrong—they are forced down— disciplined to maintain "the order" Some conform, some resist, some fall, and they are forgotten”…. "time to rise from our knees and live on our feet" This essential collection and first ever release of all the bands compiled material on vinyl is housed in a thick cardboard, tip-on style jacket and comes with a beautiful 12"x12" booklet with many photos, liner notes etc. Remixed by Brad Wood (Sunny Day Real Estate, Touche Amore) and mastered by Brad Boatright.

Eliana Glass - E LP (Shelter Press)

There's no mistaking the sultry lilt of Eliana Glass-alternating between an offbeat, searching quality and her poignant, awe-inspiring range. Her piano playing also possesses this stirring push and pull between the otherworldly and painfully human-each melody it's own unique, aching realm. Glass' sparse, meditative music often captures, in her words, the "condensation of everyday life," an image that suits the bittersweet, ephemeral, and abstract nature of her work. Glass' debut album, E, arrives via Shelter Press, and not only is it a tender portrait of her lifelong relationship with the piano, it's also a distillation of entire lifetimes into song.

Glixen - She Only Said LP (Julia’s War)

Arriving as a standout group in the current American shoegaze renaissance, Phoenix four-piece Glixen transcend all expectations of what the genre should currently look and sound like. The band creates a profoundly heavy sonic experience with their music, paying respects to their predecessors but resulting in something completely modern. An amalgamation of influences like Björk, My Bloody Valentine, Godflesh, t.A.T.u, and Hum, their sound crawls with intensity and introspection to contrast lead singer Aislinn Ritchie's lulling vocals. [Limited edition fruit punch color vinyl.]

Hate - Bellum Regiis LP (Metal Blade)

Hate, who formed in Warsaw in 1990, have been hailed as a "hallmark of consistency," and praised as a "sleek and tight death metal monster." Since 2017's Tremendum, Hate has focused on nature and it's mysteries as a main source of inspiration. For instance, 2019's Auric Gates of Veles focused on death, the Slavic perception of death in particular. Six years later, Bellum Regiis finds Hate delving into "humanity and why are we, as creatures, so deeply motivated by concepts like power, wealth, glory and faith. The main theme is a struggle for power and everything that comes with it." Hence the album title Bellum Regiis, which translates to "A War of Royalty" or "A War of Kings." Limited white splatter color vinyl LP pressing.

Jenny Hval - Iris Silver Mist CD/LP (4AD)

Iris Silver Mist is the new album by Norwegian musician, writer and artist Jenny Hval. Named after the fragrance by Serge Lutens with the same name, the album too moves like a perfume—between flower and smoke, ghostly yet alive. The album didn’t start with music, but with its absence. When live music disappeared during the pandemic, Jenny Hval was left with a void that was hard to pinpoint until she found herself drawn to perfume. Smelling and collecting, reading and writing: she put away the music, and surrounded herself with the notes and accords of fragrances instead. It was only later that she understood why: she was searching for another way to sense presence, to fill the emptiness music had left behind. When she eventually returned to making music, each song was infused with smells. Many of the songs on Iris Silver Mist were created as a mixtape, as one continuous flow of ideas. Before the songs were recorded, they were performed like this, as long, shapeshifting pieces, as part of the interdisciplinary piece I want to be a Machine. The album has kept this feeling of one song seeping into the next. “It is about moving,” Jenny says about the album, but she means it in a more symbiotic way. Moving into the sound, as one song turns into the next, as she turns into the music, and her perfume does so, too. Iris Silver Mist is a record about the stage, the music and how it can change us. About the things that touch us, change us, and settle on or under our skin. [Indie exclusive white vinyl.]

Cash Langdon - Dogs LP (Well Kept Secret)

"Dogs" is Cash Langdon's second record under his own name, but the first joined by his band Meadow Dust (bassist Matt Whitson and drummer Reagan Bruce). Mostly recorded at Portside Studios (the former location of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound) in just two days, engineer Brad Timko (Dan Sartain, St. Paul and The Broken Bones) captured the trio sounding fierce and tight. Their fuzzy take on heavy country rock recalls Neil Young & Crazy Horse and gives off the heat of Langdon's native Birmingham. Like Young, his voice is simultaneously earnest and world-weary, but there's a sense of humor too, and a resignation to keeping on ("Dogs"). These songs are beautiful, searing, southern-gothic testaments to the ongoing violence of being awake to the world around you ("Lilac Whiskey Noise") and the resolve to stay awake anyway ("Magic Again"). [Limited edition school notebook yellow vinyl.]

Lights - A6 LP (Virgin)

Lights' A6 is exactly what it says it is: Album Six. A testament to years of crafting beautiful, affirming and transportive art, A6 draws from a rich well of Lights' experiences - grief, growth, love, and self-discovery. Sonically, it blends Midwest emo, nostalgic new wave, and immersive synth-wave. Written and produced by Lights from her home in British Columba and inspired by sights and sounds of Berlin, A6 captures life's fleeting moments - like notes kept in a journal, too personal to say aloud. [Limited edition orange vinyl.]

Lucius - Lucius CD/LP (Fantasy)

"Our fourth studio album is the four of us, just as we first started recording together as a band. It's raw and honest and feels like coming home; something that resonates deeply in this moment of our lives. We are home in so many senses of the word; in the last couple of years we've started setting roots, finding life partners, building families, growing gardens. We got dogs (you can hear them in the background if you listen close). We wrote songs about life and relationships. We recorded them in our home studios. We saw the beginnings and endings of life cycles while making this record, the beauty and fragility of the human experience. So, it's only fitting that this album is self-titled, it's our story, who we are now and how we got here. Welcome to our living room." - Lucius. [Indie store exclusive opaque pink vinyl.]

Maddie & Tae - Love & Light LP (Mercury Nashville)

Maddie & Tae will be releasing their 3rd studio album with 16 brand new songs. Together as longtime friends and music collaborators, Maddie Font and Taylor Kerr previously drew praise for their 1-2 punch project Through The Madness Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and their No. 1 debuting The Way It Feels album.

Marco with Love - Silver Boy LP (Outright Rock Records)

Marco With Love is a cosmic blend of American Rock 'N' Roll, drawing inspiration from iconic artists like The Byrds, Little Richard, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Led by Marco Argiro—a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, producer, and label owner—Marco With Love’s music is full of emotion, honesty, and flair, with sounds that feel timeless yet contemporary. Marco With Love’s debut full-length is called Silver Boy. The album offers a vibrant mix of introspective storytelling, emotional depth, and musical craftsmanship. Drawing from his Italian roots and a deep connection to personal experiences, Silver Boy feels both like a journey through life’s complexities and a celebration of growth and self-discovery. Each of the album’s 10 tracks showcases Marco’s ability to blend nostalgia with modern sounds, creating a record that speaks to anyone who has ever grappled with the pressures of life, love, and identity.

Briston Maroney - JIMMY LP (Atlantic)

Briston Maroney's highly anticipated third album, JIMMY, is a raw, explosive exploration of self-discovery and acceptance, born from the artist's complex journey between two contrasting worlds-his upbringing in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the free-spirited energy of Florida. Inspired by a figure from his past-a Florida man who embodied the carefree, rugged spirit Maroney admired-the album follows the artist as he navigates the chaos of youth, mental turmoil, and existential questions. Tracks like "Real Good Swimmer" and "Better Than You" capture the struggle of finding your true self, while the album's title reflects Maroney's own search for authenticity. Blending grunge rock with moments of introspective balladry, JIMMY is both a personal reflection and a universal anthem for anyone wrestling with identity, expectations, and the quest for meaning. With a mix of humor, vulnerability, and defiant spirit, Maroney invites listeners on an unforgettable journey of personal revelation and liberation. [Indie store exclusive hot pink vinyl.]

Model/Actriz - Pirouette LP (True Panther Records)

Following the release of their critically acclaimed debut, 'Dogsbody,' (Pitchfork Best New Music, Rolling Stone Future 25, NME The Cover), Brooklyn-based quartet Model/Actriz's sophomore album 'Pirouette' lands sexually commanding and righteously diva-esque. 'Pirouette' takes inspiration everywhere from Lady Gaga and Grace Jones to classical ballet and dissonant dance music. Like a well-oiled machine, Model/Actriz's punk aggression surrenders to queer pop, arriving at stunning new ways to be free. Available on baby pink vinyl, gatefold jacket, printed inner sleeves. [Indie store exclusive pink vinyl.]

Lael Neale - Altogether Stranger LP (Sub Pop)

Lael Neale's minimalist drone pop draws inspiration from the Transcendentalists, the alienation of modern life, and a rich array of musical influences-ranging from Dionne Warwick and John Lennon to primitive American gospel and Spacemen 3. Her expansive new record, Altogether Stranger was written and recorded in the early morning quiet of Los Angeles. Clocking in at just 32 minutes, the 9-song LP covers an unexpected breadth of musical and lyrical terrain-from garage rock nursery rhymes and creation myths to Motorik dance dirges and solitary Omnichord meditations. A brilliant lyricist, Neale has a unique ability to uncover the extraordinary within the mundane, tackling themes of polarity that recur throughout her work-country vs. City, humanity vs. #technology, isolation vs. #society. This album is her third collaboration with producer Guy Blakeslee who helps expand the tonal palette while staying true to Neale's commitment to the raw immediacy and hand-made intimacy of home recording. [Indie exclusive lavender ‘loser edition’ vinyl.]

Owl John - Owl John LP (Atlantic)

OWL JOHN aka Scott Hutchison of critically acclaimed Scottish group Frightened Rabbit, releases his self-titled debut solo album. The OWL JOHN album, which showcases Scott's trademark brutal honesty, sees a different direction from the music of Frightened Rabbit. Raw, powerful and often heart-breaking, 'OWL JOHN' will see Scott step out of Frightened Rabbit's shadow.

M Ross Perkins - What’s the Matter, M Ross? CD/LP (Karma Chief)

What's the Matter, M Ross?, the third installment from the idiosyncratic M Ross Perkins, finds our boy on an inward journey, exploring the transcendental and existential with his most lyrically confessional album to date. It's a record that serves notice that multi-instrumentalist Perkins belongs amongst the singer/songwriter zeitgeist that has swooned over MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee while serving as a conduit to optimism. Composed, performed, and recorded completely by Perkins in his Dayton, OH studio, What's the Matter is both the most stripped down and expansive within his tryptic of albums. The touchstones of psych pop remain: flourishes of Nilsson are still here, but so are Gram Parsons and Jonathan Richman. [Limited edition purple & pink vinyl.]

Propagandhi - At Peace CD/LP (Epitaph)

Canadian punk stalwarts Propagandhi unleash their latest opus, At Peace. Known for their incisive political commentary and genre-blurring soundscapes, the band continues to challenge both the status quo and their own musical boundaries. At Peace promises a fusion of their signature punk ethos with progressive elements, delivering a sonic assault that's as thought-provoking as it is relentless. As the follow-up to 2017's Victory Lap, this album is poised to reaffirm Propagandhi's place at the forefront of politically charged punk rock.

Pup - Who Will Look After the Dogs? CD/LP (Rise Records)

Toronto alt-rock weirdos Pup return with their brand-new album, Who Will Look After The Dogs? Hot off touring in Europe supporting Jimmy Eat World, and Canada supporting Sum 41, the band deliver their strongest record to date. Featuring singles, "Paranoid," "Hallways," and "Get Dumber," the album sees Pup deliver their classic anthemic yet raw sound across 12 killer tracks. [Indie store exclusive purple smoke with black, orange and pink splatter vinyl.]

Cat Ridgeway - Sprinter LP (Cen)

Departing from her Americana roots, Orlando, FL based singer/songwriter Cat Ridgeway lets loose with her latest album Sprinter. Ridgeway embraces psychobilly and rock sounds and shows she’s suited for the tongue-in-cheek genre. The in-your-face punk rock explosion of “Epilogue” and fiery garage rock sounds of “Forced Actors” showcase Ridgeway’s strengths. The tracks are filled with interesting guitar riffs, banjo strings, and melodies.

Esther Rose - Want CD/LP (New West)

Esther Rose was on a long solo drive when she started writing the opening title track of Want, her stunning fifth album. At first, the words seemed almost like a joke, something to keep herself amused as the miles passed. “I want a puppy, but I don't want a mess. I want to know where I’m going without GPS,” she sang from behind the wheel. Soon, the idea snowballed into a list of desires that spanned existential, spiritual, and mundane; romantic to platonic to familial; at once wildly ambitious yet piercingly relatable; all set to a catchy melody that blends her pop instincts with country storytelling and the raw immediacy of a basement punk show. In other words, she was on her way to another classic Esther Rose song. This precise blend has made the Santa Fe-based artist one of her generation’s most beloved songwriters: someone whose live shows are known to conclude in mass tears and group hugs. Still, something was different this time. “For me, these songs felt like revelations,” she explains, comparing the 11-song record to a memoir, alive with kinetic storytelling and personal insight. In its newly direct and stirringly nuanced writing, you’ll hear about rock bottom encounters, shifting relationships with substances, evolving perspectives on adult partnership, and, as evidenced by those early lines in “Want,” a few jokes along the way. Vivid and bracing, Want places you in the passenger seat while each of these feelings arrive. [Indie store exclusive yellow vinyl signed by the artist.]

Mei Semones - Animaru CD/LP (Bayonet)

"No second-guessing, no overthinking. The way I want to live my life is by doing the things that are important to me, and I think everyone should live that way," says Mei Semones of her strengthened self-assurance. Through continuously honing in on her signature fusion of indie rock, bossa nova, jazz and chamber pop in a way that highlights her technical prowess on guitar, the 24-year-old Brooklyn-based songwriter and guitarist is quickly establishing herself as an innovative musical force. Since the release of her acclaimed 2024 Kabutomushi EP, a series of lushly orchestrated reflections on love in it's many stages, Mei has gone on to tour extensively across the US, cultivate a dedicated following, and write and record her highly anticipated debut album, Animaru. Meaning "animal" in Japanese, Animaru is the embodiment of Mei's deeper trust in her instincts - a collection of musically impressive tracks that see Mei sounding more adventurous, more vulnerable and more confident than ever before. [Limited edition pink vinyl.]

Sextile - Yes, Please LP (Sacred Bones)

Some bands find their groove and stick to it; others reinvent themselves constantly. Sextile belongs to the latter camp, embracing the thrill of an ever-changing road map. The LA duo of Melissa Scaduto and Brady Keehn craft music with a lust for life, drawing inspiration from no wave to hardstyle. Their latest album, yes, please, pushes their sound into bold new territory, fusing anarchic electro fire with raw personal recollections-and enough beefed-up bass to bust a speaker or two. [Limited edition yellow vinyl.]

Travelin’ McCourys - One Chord That Rings True LP (McCoury Music)

The Travelin' McCourys hit a grand slam with their first album, aptly named The Travelin' McCourys. This first album won the Grammy Award for the Best Bluegrass Album of The Year. How do you follow up such a shockingly successful start? Well, in the case of the Travelin' McCourys, you take your time, record new songs when you are not on the road, and surprise your fans with an unannounced album release seven years later! One Chord That Rings True is that long-awaited album.

Suzanne Vega - Flying With Angels LP (Cooking Vinyl)

Flying With Angels is Suzanne Vega's first studio album of new songs in eleven years. Bearing the stamp of a masterful storyteller who "observes the world with a clinically poetic eye" (The New York Times), Vega's new songs find her returning to observations on city life, ordinary people, and real-world subjects.

Young Gun Silver Fox - Pleasure LP (Blue Elan Records)

Young Gun Silver Fox's fifth album, Pleasure, sees the West Coast Yacht Rock duo of British singer songwriter Andy Platts and American multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee continuing to mine their love for the breezy, sunny, roof-down strains of '70s California pop-rock-soul, channeling the likes of the Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pablo Cruise, Ned Doheny and others. After four releases with both members laying down ideas in their own studios and emailing files back and forth, this time Shawn traveled to Andy's studio in Norfolk, England where they wrote and recorded ideas from scratch, with half of the album's 10 songs coming from these in-person sessions.

Reissues, Comps, Live Recordings, Vault Excavations...

The American Analog Set - The Fun of Watching Fireworks LP (Numero)

The dreamy debut album from Texas's new wave of American krautrock. Recorded at home in 1996, The Fun Of Watching Fireworks straddles the aerodynamic drag between lo-fi and Living Stereo, huffing hypnotic chem trails, Ampex 456 polyfibre dust, and subtropical ozone while the Farfisa warms up. Remastered from the original analog tapes as a reminder of what life was like in the before times. Trespassers encouraged. [Limited edition cloudy clear ‘too tired to shine’ color vinyl.]

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band - Big Crown Vaults Vol. 4 LP (Big Crown)

Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, the mysterious steel pan outfit hailing from Hamburg, Germany made significant noise in 2024 when French film Anatomy of a Fall won an Academy Award for best original screenplay. Bacao's cover of 50 Cent's "PIMP" was featured so heavily in the film and plays such a huge role in the storyline that it became synonymous with its success. All accolades aside, "PIMP" is literally just the tip of the Bacao iceberg. With four full length albums and a tall stack of 7" singles that have become staples to DJs around the world, they have been prolific since signing with Big Crown in 2014. Despite the constant releases and elaborate catalog, every recording session has borne more fruit than could fit on an album, leaving a handful of tunes in the recording vault. Here on Big Crown Vaults Vol. 4 we open up that vault and give all (well, most of) those tunes a proper pressing and release.

The Clinger Sisters - Havin’ A Good Time LP (Sundazed)

In the mid ‘60s, rock ‘n’ roll was almost exclusively a man’s world. The Clingers, four Mormon sisters, dared to challenge the pre-conceived notion that rock music was a dark and dangerous place that had little space for women. The Clingers' angelic beauty, shining harmonies, uncompromising virtue and ferocious ambition were a light in the often-tumultuous Los Angeles music industry. They attracted top music producers excited about the possibility of something new and unheard. It also attracted those who sought to exploit their talent and take advantage of their naivete. “Church girls with guitars daring to play the Devil’s music”- Kim Fowley

Colleen Green - I Want to Grow Up LP (Hardly Art)

Hardly Art is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Colleen Green's acclaimed album, I Want to Grow Up, which was initially released in February, 2015. This new pressing of the album is on limited-edition clear pink vinyl. I Want to Grow Up was recorded at Sputnik Sound in Nashville, TN and was Green's first album professionally recorded in a studio. It features Jake Orrall of JEFF The Brotherhood on guitar and Diarrhea Planet's Casey Weissbuch on drums. The album received accolades from publications such as Pitchfork, Stereogum, Rolling Stone, LA Times and The New York Times, whose Ben Ratliff wrote: "Around her songs, there is a basic air of competence, toughness, self-reliance - she's organized her sound, has identified her neuroses and doesn't need your help." " her songs have an aggressively dreamy sound, one that toes the line of sincerity. As seriously as she addresses adulthood, one can't help but wonder if she isn't winking a little bit too." - LA Times "If this perfect pop-punk sugar rush had been released in 1995, it would have been on MTV nonstop." - Rolling Stone " armed with a lo-fi approach to songwriting reminiscent of Waxahatchee and early Liz Phair, Green digs into what it means to be an adult (or not)." - BUST
