Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

The Bacon Brothers – Ballad Of The Brothers LP (Forty Below)

For The Bacon Brothers, music is all about exploration. The siblings have spent the better part of three decades creating their own mix of folk, rock, soul, and country music. They call that diverse sound "forosoco", and it's taken them around the world, from headlining gigs in Japan to American performances at iconic venues like Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry and Gruene Hall. The exploration continues with the band's twelfth release, The Ballad Of The Brothers.

Boynextdoor – How? (Earth Ver.) CD (Koz Entertainment)
Boynextdoor – How? (Fire Ver.) CD (Koz Entertainment)
Boynextdoor – How? (Sticker Ver.) CD (Koz Entertainment)
Boynextdoor – How? (Wind Ver.) CD (Koz Entertainment)

Brainstory – Sounds Good LP (Big Crown)

Based in L.A. but hailing from the Inland Empire's own Rialto, California, two-thirds of Brainstory, Kevin and Tony Martin are brothers by blood, while Eric Hagstrom is a brother through their music and long-term friendship. Since they started the band, they have constantly faced situations that forced them to rise to the occasion. The path to take their art to the next level is clearer than ever, and once again, they are here for it.

T-Bone Burnett – The Other Side CD/LP (Verve)

T Bone Burnett, the multi-Grammy Award-winner and living legend, returns with a solo project, The Other Side. "Waiting For You" is the lead single released with a visualizer and featuring the angelic harmonies of Lucius as its backdrop. The album promises a sweeping return to folk and form for this formidable guitarist and singer-songwriter.

Chanel Beads – Your Day Will Come CD/LP (Jagjaguwar)

At once a hazy relic and a digital snapshot of the human experience, Your Day Will Come is the debut album from Chanel Beads. The remarkable project announces the arrival of New York-based musician Shane Lavers as a new force in experimental music, capturing the many contradictions of modern existence and the strange infiniteness of the digital world. The songs feel like a memory in which you can't distinguish between what actually happened or what was a false reproduction in your mind-although the burning emotion remains intact. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]

Claraguilar - Figura LP (Lapsus Records)

The scenic artist and multi-instrumentalist Claraguilar moves from performing arts to cinema as a composer and live performer with soundscapes that blend electronics and sampled elements with orchestral arrangements. The starting point of Claraguilar's debut album was born with the concept of an "invisible orchestra," and Figura is a space in which electronica, ambient, and chamber-pop coexist; all under an operatic halo full of drama. The album dives into the melodic landscapes, merged with orchestral samples and chopped voices containing mysterious messages inside. Each track is a pixelated lightshow and a live electronic instrumentation, presented onstage as an elegant performance with an expansive emotional range.

Cloud Nothings – Final Summer CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Over the past 15 years Cloud Nothings have become part of the fabric of modern indie rock with a steady run of reliably fantastic records, and this streak continues unabated with Final Summer–an album that’s so assured, so instantly satisfying, that it forces you to pause and realize you’re listening to one of the great American rock bands in their prime. Cloud Nothings recently shared Final Summer's title track (which garnered attention from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Stereogum, Paste, BrooklynVegan, Uproxx, and more) and now they've released another high voltage new single, "Running Through The Campus". It's a three-minute blast of surging guitars and drums wrapped around the effortless hooks that vocalist/guitarist Dylan Baldi excels at. [Indie store exclusive half clear/half orange w/ black splatter vinyl.]

Coral Morphologic & Nick Leon - Projections of a Coral City LP (Balmat)

This project marks a series of collisions between distant worlds: the organic and the artificial, the Eocene and the Anthropocene, sea and cement -- and even, perhaps, ambient music and activism. Coral Morphologic are the Miami duo of marine biologist Colin Foord and musician J.D. McKay; since 2007, they have used a variety of multimedia projects to generate environmental awareness of marine biodiversity -- most notably Coral City Camera, an underwater webcam streaming live from an urban reef ecosystem in Port Miami. Their city-mate Nick León is a linchpin of South Florida's contemporary leftfield electronic scene, with credits on records by Rosalía and Iceboy Violet, among others. The tones are watery, the mood elegiac, the colors a washed-out pastel. Forms that appear static on the surface gradually open up to reveal hidden depths teeming with microscopic movement. You might detect resonances with other aquatically minded works, such as Jürgen Müller's Science of the Sea or Harold Budd's liquid piano compositions, but ultimately Projections of a Coral City creates the impression of a world unto itself -- a hauntingly beautiful space at the meeting point between sorrow and hope.

Folterkammer – Weibermacht CD/LP (Century Media)

Folterkammer, which translates to ‘Torture Chamber’ in German, offers a sonic experience startlingly unlike anything you’ve ever heard. This New York-Swiss-French ensemble skillfully fuses elements of Baroque music, black metal, opera, jazz, and classical into a captivating, yet unsettling amalgamation. Weibermacht, a term translated with octave - flexing prowess by Andromeda Anarchia as "Bitch Power," immediately delves into the provocative, pushing boundaries from the very first track, "Anno Domina." Sung entirely in German, the song initiates a 45-minute thematic plunge into the depths of BDSM, where pain blurs with pleasure. This venture into the taboo is no surprise, as the band’s lineup also includes Imperial Triumphant guitarist Zachary Ezrin and boasts a truly disturbing cover by renowned artist Eliran Kantor (Immolation, Heaven Shall Burn). Uneasy listening has never felt so good. [Limited edition ‘baby pink’ vinyl.]

Bill Frisell – Orchestras CD/2xLP (Blue Note)

Bill Frisell's expansive double album Orchestras documents two inspired concert-hall engagements arranged by Michael Gibbs for the guitarist's trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston. Sweeping orchestration evoking landmark film scores and Gil Evans alike move nimbly within and around the trio's telepathic rapport, and Frisell's shimmering trademark tone melds gorgeously with symphonic strings and brass.

Gustaf – Package Pt. 2 CD/LP (Royal Mountain)

Gustaf, the Brooklyn no wave/post-punk band helmed by Lydia Gammill, presents their sophomore album. Swedish synth-pop phenomenon Kite's second 7” since signing with Dais in 2023 finds the duo of Nicklas Stenemo and Christian Hutchinson Berg swinging for new heights of romantic desolation and baroque grandeur.

Stephanie Lambring – Hypocrite CD/LP (Almost Autonomous)

“I’m not afraid of the uncomfortable,” says Stephanie Lambring. “Oddly enough, I think you can actually find a lot of comfort in exploring it, in facing it head on and seeing it for what it really is.” It’s that paradox that lies at the heart of Lambring’s stunning new record, Hypocrite. Recorded in Nashville with producer Teddy Morgan (Carl Broemel, Elise Davis), the collection is a remarkable work of self-reflection from an artist determined to know her truest self (and to help us find our own true selves in the process). The arrangements are lush and hypnotic here, with Lambring’s breathy vocals floating atop a sea of dreamy synthesizers and shimmering guitars, and the writing is as raw and vulnerable as it gets, confronting everything from religion and trauma to body image and motherhood with unflinching honesty. The result is a record that lands somewhere between Phoebe Bridgers and Alanis Morrissette as it looks for the best by reckoning with the worst, an album full of love and grace and compassion that aims to remind us that imperfection and humanity go hand in hand.

Writing and recording in a burst of inspiration, Dark Matter was born in just three weeks. As a result, Dark Matter channels the shared spirit of a group of lifelong creative confidants and brothers in one room playing as if their very lives depended on it. The album’s packaging features light painting art by Alexandr Gnezdilov. The album cover art was crafted using a large self-made kaleidoscope. Rampue - Bubblebath Trance LP (A Tribe Called Kotori)

A Tribe Called Kotori's first foray into full-length territories, as the immensely talented Rampue takes us on a melancholy-riddled ride across his phantasmatic mindscapes. A true sound explorer, deftly steering his ship down the junction of electronica, abstract and balearic-infused prog house, the Berlin-based vibist has us transfixed and elevated throughout the twelve cuts that form the backbone to this lushly textured promenade in sound -- at times understatedly euphoric, at others rivetingly exotic. Distantly emulating the "euphonious strains" of iconic PS1 video games soundtracks from his youth days, Bubblebath Trance has us surfing a constant paradox of emotions, wistful but not abandoning itself to sorrow, dynamic yet suspended in some sort of mind-expanding stasis. A crystal-pure object that shall not reveal its secrets, even after a thousand listens and just as many wowing moments.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy – Coup De Grâce CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Every single song SeeYouSpaceCowboy have released since forming in 2016 has been deeply rooted in the life experience and trauma of frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. It’s one of the things that makes the San Diego band’s music so compelling and visceral, because those oftentimes harrowing experiences flow through its veins. Whether that’s existential anguish, substance addiction or suicidal ideation (and attempts), Sgarbossa has never been afraid to detail her pain and torment in excruciating detail. She holds nothing back and combined with the band’s intensely dark (and darkly intense) blend of sasscore, punk, mathcore and metalcore, it’s always made for profound and devastating listening. Coup De Grâce is no exception to that rule.

The CD begins with a rare private performance of Zorn alone in the church exploring and stretching the organ's capabilities. For the evening performance, A Pilgrimage Through Hell, Zorn's dear friend and colleague of over thirty years John Medeski joins as his organ assistant, and the two of them literally pull out all the stops.

As a member of the great Mississippi Shieks band, he encountered a wide range of traditional and pop styles and employed many of them in his innovative performances. One part of his repertoire was the sexually suggestive double entendre blues that are featured here on this album. The Flesheaters – Minute To Pray A Second To Die [Reissue/1981] LP (Jackpot)

Red colorway. Jackpot Records is proud to re-reissue what many call arguably the greatest album of the punk rock era: The Flesh Eaters' 1981 punk-noir masterpiece, A Minute To Pray A Second To Die. Once referred to as an all-star roots/voodoo combo, The Flesh Eaters could only have crawled out of the myst of the late L.A. ‘70s punk scene. Fronted by punk poet/composer Chris D. (Desjardins), the band was a satellite for exquisite collaborators that allowed him to bring the full force of his dark, messed-up lyrical nightmares. Members of X, Wall Of Voodoo, Los Lobos, The Blasters, and The Plugz all hopped into his unmarked car to take a drive with Chris D. It's grabbed-by-the-throat vocals are powerfully buoyed by the tight melodicism emanating from the players on this record (John Doe and DJ Bonebrake from X, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, Dave Alvin & Bill Bateman of The Blasters). Hell, we even get the perfectly executed John Doe original, "Cyrano de Berger's Back", which was re-recorded by X in 1987.
