Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

André 3000 – New Blue Sun 2xCD/3xLP (Epic)

"New Blue Sun is the continuation of discovery for me. My entire career has been fueled by this and it is the only thing that keeps me honest. This album is the most honest and interesting offering I can give today. I never could have imagined in high school, when I started rapping and doing music that I would be here right now playing wind instruments. Ha. This life ride always surprises me. I’m here for it.” — Andre 3000

Bright & Black – The Album 2xLP (Versity Rights)

Bright & Black is metal music and orchestral music, two worlds existing in parallel, now clashing together by having metal writers compose directly for the orchestra. Performed by the Baltic Sea Philharmonic conducted by Kristjan Järvi with soloist Eicca Toppinen. Written by Eicca Toppinen (Apocalyptica), Fredrik Åkesson (Opeth), Erik Danielsson (Watain), Nico Elgstrand (Entombed AD), Tomas Haake/Dick Lövgren (Meshuggah) and more. [Limited-edition black w/ white color vinyl.]

Gary Clark Jr. – JPEG RAW CD/LP (WB)

Gary Clark Jr.'s new album JPEG RAW, his fourth studio release, marks a grand step in his musical evolution. While retaining the deep and true resonance of his blues foundations and guitar virtuosity with subtlety yet conviction, he reaches well beyond this time. The emphasis here is on song and studio craft without losing the rawness of his young legend. The music is dense and adventurous with a more cohesive synthesis of his eclectic musical palette. Hip samples, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Boy Williamson decorate flourishes of African, world music, even jazz while merging with blues, rock, R&B, and rap; familiar areas he has ventured before, this time with more unity forging a fresh new style. Clark's lyrics are pointed, deeply personal, outspoken, and socially conscious with occasional forays into rap and spoken word from Clark himself. The sonics are immersive verging on modern groove-oriented psychedelia with hip-hop driven beats in verses giving way to anthemic choruses, rich with power-chording and wide fuzz riffage. [Indie store exclusive bone vinyl and standard black are available.]

Elbow – Audio Vertigo LP (Geffen)

In the wake of 2021's Flying Dream 1, Elbow wanted something different for this new studio album, their tenth. Recorded and mixed in multiple UK studios across 2023, Audio Vertigo was built upon "gnarly, seedy grooves" that the band laid down. As direct as these songs are, the tracks bring a wide range of sonics as you hear the single "Lover's Leap" plus "Things I've Been Telling Myself for Years", "Poker Face", "Knife Fight", "From The River", and more. [Indie store exclusive translucent blue vinyl.]

Hannah Ellis – That Girl LP (Curb)

After more than a decade of writing hits for others, Hannah Ellis is finally keeping some songs for herself. The Kentucky native's highly anticipated debut, That Girl, boasts 13 original tracks all co-penned by the in-demand lyricist. From the clever wordplay of "Wine Country" and "Karma On The Rocks" to the raw vulnerability of "Someone Else's Heartbreak" and "Too Much and Not Enough", Ellis' first full-length record reveals a seasoned songwriter fully embracing her small-town roots, her real-life romance, and her newfound artistic voice on every level.

Sam Evian – Plunge LP (Flying Cloud Recordings)

Plunge is Sam Evian's fourth studio album and the debut on his new imprint Flying Cloud Recordings. Joined by his closest friends and collaborators (including Liam Kazar, Sean Mullins, El Kempner of Palehound and Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief), the album was tracked live to tape in the early winter months of 2023 over a 10-day period at his quaint Flying Cloud Recording studio tucked away in the Catskills Mountains. With a wide-open recording approach, the result is Evian's best album to date: a cathartic rock record that melds power pop, iridescent guitar, raucous psychedelia, and Sam's now sought-after grooves. The music is both fresh and familiar, sonically inspired by his penchant for early ‘70s production and creatively propelled by the free-spirited process depicted in the Beatles documentary Get Back. [Indie store exclusive translucent marble blue vinyl.]

Sierra Ferrell – Trail Of Flowers CD/LP (Rounder)

One of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today, Sierra Ferrell brings a dose of beautifully strange magic to everything she touches. On her new album Trail Of Flowers, brought to life with producer Eddie Spear (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Chris Stapleton) and additional production by Gary Paczosa (Alison Krauss, Dwight Yoakam, Gillian Welch), she expands her sound while deepening the urgency of her songs, often revealing a wealth of wisdom within her wildly imaginative storytelling. [Indie store exclusive ‘candyland’ blue vinyl.]

Fletcher – In Search Of The Antidote CD/LP (Capitol)

Through singles like "Eras Of Us", "Lead Me On" and more, Fletcher shares the different realizations, ego deaths, personal rebirths and more, that encompass what it means to be on a true soul search. She shows both the beauty and brutality of what it means to be a human being on an ever-evolving quest back to one's own heart. [Indie store exclusive light blue vinyl.]

Good Morning – Good Morning CD/2xLP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

After signing with Polyvinyl in 2021 and releasing the critically acclaimed album Barnyard (as well as the two double singles “Mollyduker / Keep It & Out to Pasture / Misery”), Australian duo Good Morning return with their aptly titled seventh album, Good Morning Seven. On Good Morning Seven, Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons share some of their most beautifully complex and ambitious work to date - a double album that invites the listener into a world of unwavering tonal depth and sonic masterpieces. Produced & engineered by the band in their Melbourne studio and mixed in Joshua Tree, CA by the band with help from Tyler Karmen (My Morning Jacket, Sharon Van Etten, Devendra Banhart), the album features stand-out tracks such as the breezy "Excalibur" and the lush and sweeping "Toy". [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]

Julia Holter – Something In The Room She Moves CD/2xLP+MP3 (Domino)

After a string of dream pop albums that established her searching voice in independent music—from 2012 breakthrough Ekstasis to Loud City Song and Have You in My Wilderness—Holter released the sprawling and thrillingly experimental Aviary in 2018. Since then, she has scored films like Never Rarely Sometimes Always, performed a commissioned live score for The Passion of Joan of Arc with the Chorus of Opera North, and collaborated with her partner, the musician Tashi Wada, who plays synth and bagpipes on her new album. Something In The Room She Moves is a remarkable progression in Holter’s oeuvre, synthesizing her free, improvisatory energy with her signature eloquence. [Indie store exclusive ‘calder red’ vinyl.]

Boldy James – 1LB LP (Near Mint)

Clear w/ orange galaxy effect vinyl. Boldy James and Belgian producer Your Boy Posca join forces to create a new sound within Boldy's world of countless, yet quality, projects. With a classy, laid-back approach of grimy soul samples and spooky 1980's aesthetic, the tape flows flawlessly top to bottom as Boldy paints a unique portrait of a Midwest drug dealer.

The Jesus And Mary Chain – Glasgow Eyes CD/LP/2xLP (Cooking Vinyl)

Marking 40 years of The Jesus And Mary Chain, Glasgow Eyes was recorded at Mogwai's Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, where Jim and William continued the creative process that resulted in their previous album, 2017's Damage And Joy, becoming their highest charting album in over 20 years. What emerged is a record that finds one of the UK's most influential groups embracing a productive second chapter, their maelstrom of melody, feedback and controlled chaos now informed more audibly by their love for Suicide and Kraftwerk and a fresh appreciation of the less disciplined attitudes found in jazz. [Two color vinyl pressings are available: single-disc translucent red and double-disc clear.]

Six years have passed since Swiss-based duo Klaus Johann Grobe's last long player Du Bist So Symmetrisch (2018) and you'll hear they've come a long way. Admirers of Adrianne’s solo music and Big Thief will find on Bright Future her reliable talent captured in stunning, magnetic clarity. In the company of parlor instruments, Adrianne’s modern melodic and lyrical inventions create new traditions. Her vocal flights at times outwit gravity, then land, guiding along an earthly path. [Indie store exclusive recycled ‘eco-mix’ vinyl.]

"I felt so much love and inspiration entering into motherhood that I just needed to create something really powerful," explains Samantha Poulter, the Berlin-based DJ and producer, who grew up in the Sydney suburbs and better known to fans as Logic1000. That vitality and renewed sense of purpose is captured on her debut album Mother. The 12-track set is a laser-focused "love letter to house music," written in collaboration with her husband and long-time creative partner Thom McAlister.

Junior Marvin – Happy Family CD (Flatiron)

Junior Marvin is widely recognized as an all-time great reggae musician and musical director and guitarist of Bob Marley's iconic band, The Wailers. Junior's new album, Happy Family, conincides with the theatrical release of One Love, the Bob Marley Paramount biopic feature film. In the film, the role of Junior is played by his real-life son, Davo, who is also a musical artist. The first single from Happy Family is Junior's new recording of "One Love". Junior Marvin was born in Jamaica and grew up in London and met the late Tuff Gong icon on Valentine's Day in 1977 (ironically the same day the film will be released) who touted him as the "young Jimi Hendrix of London". Marley immediately asked Junior to join his band as lead guitarist and became one of Marley's closest friends and influencers up until his death. [Vinyl version due April 12.]

This record is a brotherly and collaborative follow-up to Kramer's 2022 ambient excursions, Music For Films Edited By Moths. Clear vinyl pressing.

Charlie Parr – Little Sun LP (Smithsonian Folkways)

Over the last couple of decades, Charlie Parr has crisscrossed the world on tour more times than one can count. The remarkable backing band here includes Marisa Anderson, Victor Krummenacher, Andrew Borger, and Asher Fulero. Masterfully channeling the philosophical and transcendental qualities of the blues, Parr takes us on a journey through the winding streets of his imagination.

Rosali – Bite Down LP+MP3 (Merge)

Bite Down finds acclaimed songwriter and guitarist Rosali Middleman amid transition. Written after moving to North Carolina from her longtime home of Philadelphia, Bite Down is a searching, hungry record by an artist who is resolved to bite down on life, in all its horror and joy. She is joined here by Mowed Sound - David Nance (bass, guitar), James Schroeder (guitar, synth), Kevin Donahue (drums, percussion) - and in studio by Destroyer collaborator Ted Bois (keys). Bite Down is Rosali's second album working with Mowed Sound, and there is urgency and ambition in their collaboration - a band pushing each other not just to expand on what they've already done together, but to break through into altogether new territory. [Indie store exclusive pink ‘peak vinyl’ pressing.]

The Staves – All Now LP (Nonesuch)

All Now emerges from a period of chaos for the band that was followed by a period of enforced quiet. The Staves released their third album, Good Woman, in February 2021; it was an album of love and loss, written during a disconcerting period of turmoil and pain. Struggling after two years of deep solitude and pain following the release of Good Woman, The Staves did what they know how to do best: they got back to writing with the idea of going back to basics and focusing almost solely on each other and their guitars as a starting point.

Sylvaine – Eg Er Framand CD/LP (Season Of Mist)

A strong duality between worlds. A balance between the beautiful and the harsh, light and darkness, serenity and chaos, the outside world, and the inner realm; a juxtaposition between our human life and the spiritual origins. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Sylvaine's music deals with the extreme range of emotions human existence has to offer, as a result of existing in this world as a being not from here. In constant conflict with oneself and struggling to adapt to this place we call our own, Eg Er Framand serves as an emotional catharsis for the artist, revealing the eternal longing for something else residing within its melodies.

Thee Sinseers – Sinseerly Yours LP (Colemine)

To say that The Sinseers play oldies would be a misnomer. Fronted by bandleader and son of East Los Angeles Joey Quiniones, the group has quietly chipped away at the sounds of R&B and soul for the last half-decade. Quinones and his crew have continuously created a distinctive vibe that explores all aspects of a timeless genre, bringing together their interpretation of music through an unmistakable modern lens.

The Wandering Hearts intimately explore this maternal transformation on their aptly titled third full-length offering and Chrysalis Records debut, Mother. The UK trio - Tara Wilcox [vocals], A.J. Dean [vocals, acoustic guitar], and Francesca "Chess"Whiffin [vocals, mandolin] - chronicle this season of growth and change across eleven tracks.

Waxahatchee – Tigers Blood CD/LP (ANTI-)

One of the hardest working singer-songwriters in the game is named Katie Crutchfield. She was born in Alabama, grew up near Waxahatchee Creek. Skipped town and struck out on her own as Waxahatchee. That was over a decade ago. Crutchfield says she never knew the road would lead her here, but after six critically acclaimed albums, she's never felt more confident in herself as an artist. While her sound has evolved from lo-fi folk to lush alt-tinged country, her voice has always remained the same. Honest and close, poetic with Southern lilting. Much like Carson McCullers's Mick Kelly, determined in her desires and convictions, ready to tell whoever will listen. And after years of being sober and stable in Kansas City-after years of sacrificing herself to her work and the road-Crutchfield has arrived at her most potent songwriting yet. On her new album, Tigers Blood, Crutchfield emerges as a powerhouse-an ethnologist of the self-forever dedicated to revisiting her wins and losses. But now she's arriving at revelations and she ain't holding them back. [Indie store exclusive translucent red vinyl.]

Chris Young – Young Love & Saturday Nights 2xLP (SME Nashville)

New full-length album by the critically acclaimed country artist.

Zombi – Direct Inject CD/LP (Relapse)

Zombi make their long-awaited return with their new album, Direct Inject. Capturing the spirit of previous albums like Escape Velocity and Surface To Air, while expanding the band's sonic palette into territory, ranging from ‘80s synth rock ("Direct Inject") to saxophone-heavy slow jams ("Sessuale II"). Direct Inject is essential Zombi, and quite possibly their most diverse and engaging record yet. You can't help but get carried up in the slipstream of tracks like "Bodies In The Flotsam", the hard rock/synth strut of "Kamichi & Sandy", the guttural dirge of "The Post-Atomic Horror", or the heady sonic touches of "Insurmountable Odds". [Indie store exclusive black ice vinyl.]

Chick Corea – Sardinia 2xLP (Candid)

Released last October on CD – now available on vinyl. Jazz master Chick Corea's unconventional vision of a classical performance shines through in his interaction with the Orchestra da Camera Della Sardegna, turning the acclaimed chamber orchestra into a large-scale jazz ensemble. His joyous fusion sets the tone for the musicians and the audience, creating a truly captivating and boundary- pushing experience. Guided By Voices – Same Place The Fly Got Smashed [Reissue/1990] LP (Scat)

Originally released in 1990, Same Place The Fly Got Smashed was Guided by Voices' fourth album in as many years. Roughly a concept album about an alcoholic named Joker Bob who goes on a bender, someone dies, and Bob gets the chair ("the electrifying conclusion"). From the moment the needle drops, the listener is served notice that this isn't going to be an easy listen, as an argument taped off of a TV cuts to a basement recording of a lone, blaring electric guitar with someone yelling over the top. But for those brave enough to pass the opening hazards, there are wonders within. [Limited edition translucent red vinyl.]

This is an archeology of ourselves; you can exhume our collective and individual experiences and influences from within its fabric. We exorcised guitars for their solos, laid bare confessions directly from diary pages, and summoned an orchestra to bring our vision to life. It is our greatest honor and pride to present this offering to the world, it is everything we are."

Liars – Mess [Reissue/2014] 2xLP (Mute)

Mess is the next instalment of the Liars' recycled color vinyl reissue series, released alongside the album's 10th anniversary. Mom Jeans. – Puppy Love [Reissue/2018] LP (Counter Intuitive)

Green vinyl. This indie-emo group from California is certainly not the first to write an album about their ex, but they nailed it like only a few do. The instrumentation is flawless, and the production could not be better for the style of indie. Honestly, just listen to the record and stop reading some dumb description that's supposed to entice you into checking it out. It's worth it.

Motörhead – Overkill [Reissue/1979] CD (Sanctuary)

Tycho – Awake [Reissue/2014] LP (Ghostly International)

10th Anniversary Edition blue/beige colorway. For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake - his second LP for Ghostly International - the solo project evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record. Following 2011's Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole.
