Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Bastards Of Soul – Give It Right Back CD (Eastwood Music Group)

Bastards of Soul return with their third album Give It Right Back, the last chapter in the band's story following the death of their lead singer Chadwick Murray in 2021. The set features "This Love", a song written by Chadwick and although he was never able to record the song, Keite Young (who performed the stunning cover of "Like A Ship" with Leon Bridges) stepped in with a beautiful rendition that Chadwick would be proud of. Also featured on the album are Daptone recording artist The Sha La Das and Colemine recording artist Ghost Funk Orchestra. [An indie store exclusive red color vinyl pressing is due November 24.]

Matt Berry – Simplicity CD/LP (Acid Jazz)

Matt Berry presents a unique collaboration with esteemed Library Music label KPM. KPM is renowned for providing the musical bedrock for so many classics of British TV and international cinema, using the best British composers - such as Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, and Alan Moorhouse - to do so. Simplicity follows in the footsteps of these giants and is a worthy successor to them.

Andrew Bird – Outside Problems CD/LP (Loma Vista)

Andrew Bird on Outside Problems: “I wanted to record Inside Problems outside, but this plan fell apart when it became clear that some dude with a woodchipper could really ruin our day. I did so much casual recording during the pandemic, in my backyard or in Ojai, that I gathered enough outdoor recordings to make Outside Problems. Most of these were made without any intention of making an album, just improvisations on simple themes, some of which make up the musical backbone of Inside Problems.”

Aidan Bissett – Supernova 12” (Capitol)

Aidan Bissett details the twists and turns of romance and heartbreak with raw immediacy on his new EP, Supernova. Released by Capitol Records, the seven-song set demonstrates his remarkable range - vocally, sonically and emotionally.

Car Colors – Old Death 12” (Absolutely Kosher)

Silver vinyl. The first music in 20 years by Charles Bissell, the singer-writer-producer of the Wrens.

Cher – Christmas CD/LP (WB)

Recently released on CD – now available on ruby red vinyl. Christmas, Cher’s first new studio album in five years, includes 13 songs - several holiday classics and four originals. It also has a star-studded list of musical besties including Darlene Love, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé, Cyndi Lauper and Tyga. Recorded primarily in L.A. and London, Christmas was produced by longtime collaborator Mark Taylor (“Believe”). Songs include beloved superstar duet classics “What Christmas Means To Me" with Stevie Wonder and "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" with Darlene Love. (Darlene first recorded the song with Phil Spector and a l7-year-old Cher singing background vocals); in addition to a haunting version of “Home" written and sung with Michael Bublé. “I never say this about my own records but I’m really proud of this one. It is one of the most amazing highlights of my career,” commented Cher.

Vince Clarke – Songs Of Silence CD/LP+MP3 (Mute)

Vince Clarke, the primary composer and musician in Erasure, and previous songwriter and member of Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and The Assembly, presents (unbelievably) his first-ever solo album, Songs Of Silence. As the album title suggests, Songs of Silence is a lyric-less, instrumental album and is hugely evocative for that. Unlike anything you've previously heard from Vince Clarke as an artisan of dynamic electropop, Songs of Silence has about it a more sober ambient electronic beauty; its unique characteristics put it in a category of its own.

Des Rocs – Dream Machine CD/LP (Sumerian)

Des Rocs releases Dream Machine, the sophomore effort from the "This Is Our Life" artist. The album follows Des Rocs' 2021 debut, A Real Good Person In A Real Bad Place. Dream Machine includes the previously released single "Never Ending Moment". “Somewhere in Queens, a musical madman creates compositions in an underground lair. Formerly used as a break room for 1950s MTA tunnel workers, the grit and legacy of the city radiates from the walls, anointing Des Rocs with the authentic soul of NYC. His music builds upon its deep and soulful rock roots and applies a sadistic, frenetic twist.” [Indie store exclusive white & gold galaxy vinyl.]

Luther Dickinson – Magic Music For Family Folk CD/LP (Antone’s)

“As a father and touring musician, I made this album to keep my kids’ company in my absence, hopefully for them to sing along with in their mom’s car. These songs evoke memories of my mother playing her Martin parlor guitar and of my father, at the family turntable, telling stories about Furry Lewis and Gus Cannon or explaining a song’s meaning. I wanted to share these childhood favorites with my kids. This collection of childhood favorites was recorded for fun, at home, with family and friends in the spirit of sharing. Everyone is welcome. I wanted to share these songs with my kids and my friend’s kids as well as expose my daughters to the joy of learning, performing, and recording music that my father shared with me. The recording was largely done in 2017 during dinner parties, sleep overs and play dates, either in a family style social setting or while the kids slept.”

D’Virgilio, Morse & Jennings – Sophomore CD (Inside Out Music)

Three titans of progressive rock, Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, NMB) & Ross Jennings (Haken, Novena) joined forces in 2021 for their Troika album, a record that saw them exploring their love of more acoustic-led music and three-part vocal harmonies. Now the band are extremely pleased to reveal the follow-up, aptly titled Sophomore. The three musicians began trading song ideas in late 2022, before choosing 10 of those to record in January 2023. “I think there was always a plan in the back of everybody’s minds about doing a second one. We just got the conversation started and then started checking out some tunes. There were a lot of songs that were a little less fleshed out than with the first album, but once we got the ball rolling, it kind of went fast”, says Nick D’Virgilio.

Mick Flannery – Goodtime Charlie CD/2xLP (Oh Boy)

Mick Flannery writes songs with fluency, expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty. Mick's latest offering, Goodtime Charlie, marks his eighth studio album and is no exception. The last couple of years saw the release of an album inspired by the world's most famous chess matches, and a duet album with Susan O'Neill that blossomed into In The Game - the biggest selling Irish independent album of 2021. Now, a new collection of songs that summon up characters and scenes and give voice to emotions that have transformed into the album, Goodtime Charlie.

Gatlin – I Sleep Fine Now LP (Many Hats Dist./Gatlin)

Gray colorway. I Sleep Fine Now condenses an emotional rollercoaster into sharply rendered pop songs like "Paris", a plea for a lover to get out of her life, which swells from fluttery synths into a splendidly wounded guitar-pop track, and the wrenching "How Do You Sleep At Night", which resolves desperate wailing in a tumultuous, cathartic coda. The record contains moving depictions of grief and rebirth, feeling the pain, without wallowing.

Ghost Hounds – First Last Time CD (Maple House Music/Gibson)

“In the world of good ol' rock 'n' roll, Pittsburgh's Ghost Hounds stand out from the pack with a new spin on the traditional approach of classic rock. On their new album, First Last Time, the band channels a combination of the blues, Southern rock and Americana flavors that would light up mainstream rock radio at any point in time over the last 50 years. Much like their label, Gibson Records, Ghost Hounds are every bit as timeless as they are fresh and modern. They seamlessly manage to blur the lines between the new and the old, and it's all done with such masterful artistry and storytelling that it's hard to believe that First Last Time is only their fourth full-length album as a band.” – SPIN Magazine

Golden Apples – Bananasugarfire LP (Run For Cover)

A listener might hear echoes of the Velvet Underground, Stereolab, Stone Roses, Yo La Tengo, but there is more going on than just a studied homage to indie rock's progenitors. The themes of doubt and bewilderment found on previous albums are still present, but they are thrown into a kalaedo- scope with beams of positivity, hope, and optimism.

Neil Hamburger - Seasonal Depression Suite LP/CD/cassette (Drag City)

Neil Hamburger presents a new work from the songwriting team of Gregg Turkington and Erik Paparozzi. Seasonal Depression Suite is an album-based musical, sung by an all-star cast whose voices embody various guests stuck in a perfectly average chain-hotel, wallowing in self-pity and paranoia, re-living personal catastrophes both real and imagined, or simply trying to use the hotel vending machine. Expert music played by an all-star band to boot!

Juliana Hatfield – Sings ELO CD/LP (American Laundromat)

“ELO songs were always coming on the radio when I was growing up. They were a reliable source of pleasure and fascination (except for ‘Fire On High’ which scared the heck out of me). With this album of covers I wanted to get my hands deep into some of the massive '70s hits but I am also shining a light on some of the later work (‘Ordinary Dream’ from 2001's Zoom album, ‘Secret Messages’ and ‘From The End Of The World’, both from the '80's). Thematically, I identify with the loneliness and alienation and the outerspace-iness in the songs I chose. (I have always felt like I am part alien, not fully belonging to or in this Earth world.). [Limited edition metallic gold vinyl.]

Iron & Wine – Who Can See Forever – Soundtrack CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)

Iron & Wine's Who Can See Forever is an accompanying live record to the film of the same name. Captured at Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, the soundtrack features nineteen songs from the twenty plus year career of singer-songwriter Sam Beam. Having found inventive ways to re-invent his catalog live over the years, Who Can See Forever offers new and fresh versions of Iron & Wine songs including "The Trapeze Swinger", "Boy With a Coin" and "Naked As We Came". The film - initially intended as a live concert film - evolved into a visual portrait capturing Beam during a creative outburst that earned him four Grammy nominations in four years. Like his music, the film touches on universally personal themes as Beam juggles being an artist, husband and father. Taken as one, the soundtrack and film are a fascinating first-time glimpse behind-the-scenes of Iron & Wine. [Limited-edition blue vinyl ‘Loser edition’.]

Kishi Bashi – Music From The Song Film: Omoiyari CD/2xLP (Joyful Noise)

"Omoiyari" means to have empathy and consideration for others, and act on it. Now, the American indie-folk multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Kishi Bashi releases the companion album to his forthcoming documentary song film, titled Music From The Song Film: Omoiyari. [Limited edition sky blue vinyl.]

Robert Joseph Manning Jr. – Radio Daze & Glamping CD/LP (Omnivore)

New music from the Jellyfish co-founder. Radio Daze & Glamping includes the tracks from 2018's Glamping along with four new songs co-written with Glamping’s Chris Price (Emitt Rhodes). Roger Joseph Manning Jr. burst onto the music world's radar as cofounder of Jellyfish in 1990. After two critically acclaimed and now revered releases, the band parted ways, and Roger began a career that saw him in bands including Imperial Drag, The Moog Cookbook, and TV Eyes, as well as contributing to albums from Beck, Morrissey, Lana Del Rey, Blink 182, Johnny Cash, Adele, and more.

M(h)aol – Attachment Styles CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)

This Irish intersectional feminist five piece have gained a reputation for their engaging and invigorating live shows. M(h)aol consists of Róisín Nic Ghearailt (She/Her), Constance Keane (She/Her), Jamie Hyland (She/Her), Zoë Greenway (She/Her), and Sean Nolan (He/Him). Attachment Styles was originally released on TULLE, an independent women-led record label co-founded by Constance Keane. Attachment Styles is a record about social connection, queerness and healing where the listener goes on a journey. When Róisín was writing the lyrics, she used the theory of attachment styles as an overarching theme which is a theory that looks at the impact our inter-familial relationships and society have on how we relate to one another. The album was recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by Jamie Hyland (bassist) and all accompanying artwork and music videos were created by Zoë Greenway. [A limited-edition clear red Peak vinyl.]

Myrkur – Myrkur 12” (Relapse)

Limited blue and white color vinyl pressing. Emerging from the darkness of Scandinavia comes the much-anticipated debut EP by one-woman black metal band Myrkur. Combining the rawness of second wave black metal bands like Ulver and Darkthrone with a natural sonic, ethereal beauty, Myrkur has created a wholly unique perspective on the genre. With a distinct sense of Nordic isolation, Myrkur's debut is a feminine yet definitively brutal record that has burst onto the scene like a Valkyrie into battle.

The National – Laugh Track CD/2xLP (4AD)

The surprise companion to The National's April release First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, Laugh Track is the band's most freewheeling, all-hands-on-deck album in years. If Frankenstein represented a rebuilding of trust between group members after 20+ years together, the vibrant, exploratory Laugh Track is both the product of that faith and a new statement of intent. Reveling in the license to radically upend its creative process, The National honed most of this material in live performances on tour and captured those invigorated versions in impromptu sessions at producer Tucker Martine’s Portland studio. Two nights later in Vancouver, the nearly eight-minute album closer “Smoke Detector” was recorded during soundcheck, completing a body of work bristling with spontaneity and vintage rock energy that makes a perfect complement to the songs found on its more introspective predecessor. [Indie store exclusive translucent pink vinyl.]

Orbiting Human Circus – Quartet Plus Two CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)

Orbiting Human Circus is the continuing evolution of the imagination of Julian Koster (Neutral Milk Hotel, The Music Tapes, Elephant 6), whose music and storytelling under this moniker have encompassed immersive theater and podcasts as well as more traditional EPs and singles. Quartet Plus Two is the group's debut album. [Indie store exclusive pink & natural swirl Peak vinyl.]

Dolly Parton – Rockstar 2xCD/4xLP (Big Machine)

Global icon and recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Dolly Parton has joined forces with some of rock music's most legendary artists along with today's biggest stars for her first-ever rock album, Rockstar. The ever-evolving Parton teamed up with an all-star roster of musicians for the 30-song collection, which includes nine original tracks, and 21 covers of iconic rock anthems. Includes collaborations with Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, Steve Perry, Ann Wilson, John Fogerty, Steven Tyler, Kid Rock, Stevie Nicks, Peter Frampton, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Debbie Harry, Kevin Cronin, Rob Halford, Sting, and many others. [Indie store exclusive purple vinyl pressing with alternate cover art.]

Jai Paul –Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones) 12” (XL Recordings)

Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones) is the stolen and leaked album now officially released on vinyl. It is without doubt, one of the most joyous, shape shifting pop albums of the last 30 years. It's an album that twists and turns and radiates colors and hooks. Every listen reveals another layer, and the unfinished nature just adds to the texture and excellence.

The Polyphonic Spree – Salvage Enterprise LP (Good)

The Phoenix symbolizes a new beginning. The fire burns off the last vestiges of the past as the bird spreads its wings and takes flight into the future. The Polyphonic Spree harness the flames of rebirth on their 2023 full-length offering, Salvage Enterprise. Led by frontman, founder, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and visionary Tim DeLaughter, the group embark on their next season. They're reverent of their history, yet they're also ready for an even brighter tomorrow. [An indie store exclusive lemon-yellow colorway is available. CD and cassette versions due December 1.]

Emeli Sandé – How Were We To Know LP (Chrysalis)

A singer/songwriter with a highly resonant voice and musical influences across adult pop, R&B, and jazz, Emeli Sandé regularly provided guest vocals for several of the U.K.'s most successful grime artists before she embarked on a successful solo career in 2010. Her new album, How Were We To Know, features production from Jonny Coffer (Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus), Jim Jonsin (ASAP Rocky, Usher, Eminem), DI Genius (Drake, Raye, Sean Paul), Rxwntree, Chris Loco and Mac & Phil. This latest pop record is reminiscent of Emeli's debut in 2012, when she had her first breakout hit.

SDEM - Vortices 2xLP (Skam Records)

SDEM's debut album for Mancunian electronic music imprint Skam Records, following releases on labels like CPU and Opal Tapes. Informed by hip-hop and computer music and steeped in Northern England's post bleep+bass mutations, Vortices operates in its own lane, rooted as much in the by-hand manipulations of musique concrete and free improv as the studio-as-an-instrument innovations of electro, hip-hop, dub, and bass-weighted electronica. Evolved out of hardware jams, the pieces showcased here crackle with emotion and color; repeated plays reveal suggested and subliminal depths. Neither shackled to the grid nor beholden to linearity, the album expands and finesses SDEM's dynamic and forward-facing approach.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd – Dirt On My Diamonds Volume 1 CD/LP (Provogue)

Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed 2022 reissue, Trouble Is...25, Shepherd returns with a new project that builds upon his already legendary repertoire. Three decades since the release of his debut album, 1995's Ledbetter Heights, this Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum bandleader still sounds like the future of the blues. If you approach Dirt On My Diamonds Vol 1 expecting autopilot twelve bars then you'll be thrown a volley of curveballs in the best way possible. With material this strong, no polish was needed. As on any KWS album, songs are the currency, and the seven originals from Dirt On My Diamonds Vol 1 demand to be heard, lifting listeners above their circumstances at a time when life often feels bleak and bone-raw. [Limited-edition translucent ‘natural’ vinyl.]

Sparkling – We Are Here To Make You Feel CD/LP (Moshi Moshi)

The irresistible rush that comes from listening to Sparkling's music is intoxicating. The Cologne-formed trio's second album We Are Here To Make You Feel is a glimmering widescreen world where emotions are writ large, the group dealing in rousing choruses, twinkling synth toplines and an incessant desire to keep things propelling forward at pace. "We Are Here To Make You Feel is an album about the importance of expressing your emotions" the group say. "It's about love in every kind of way. Love for your friends, lovers, and family. It's a reminder to tell your loved ones that you love them. On this record, we wanted to say that in the most honest and straightforward way possible." [Limited-edition clear vinyl.]

Kurt Vile – Back To Moon Beach CDEP/12” (Verve)

Back To Moon Beach is an EP by no one’s definition but Kurt Vile’s. For Kurt, this collection is an expression of just how deep his well of non-album material runs. This includes six tracks culled from various sessions over the last four years and represents a wide swath of the inspirational musical community Kurt surrounds himself with. [Indie store exclusive Coke bottle clear vinyl.]

Flora Yin Wong - Cold Reading LP (Modern Love)

Flora Yin Wong's ravishing interiority finds lucid expression on an absorbing second album for Modern Love, manifesting her instrumental storytelling in a syncretic bind of supernatural themes with hyperrealist, concrète sound design. Through ten parts, Flora crystallizes the ennui that followed an uncanny, disorienting trip to East and Southeast Asia, also taking inspiration from Giuseppe Tartini's Violin Sonata in G Minor, aka the "Devil's Trill Sonata," a notoriously tricky c.18th composition which attempted to transcribe music heard in a dream. It's this soporific motif that binds and underpins Cold Reading, finding Flora chasing the dragon of fleeting fantasy through passages of etched melancholy, pinched with hypnagogic jerks that linger in the memory. From evocations of subtropical humidity in the Bryn Jones-esque, resonant hand-played percussion of "Konna" and "Banjar", to a breathtaking dreampop denouement "Nectar Dripping" and the Enya-like lush of "Beautiful Crisis", Flora blooms her ideas with an open-ended ambiguity so often missing from so called ambient music, ushering the listener into a sound world that disturbs and displaces just as much as it calms.

New evergreen vinyl. The third LP from the New Zealand quartet houses 12 jewels of tight, guitar-heavy songs that worm their way into your head, an incandescent collision of power-pop and skuzz. With Expert, The Beths wanted to make an album meant to be experienced live, for both the listeners and themselves. They wanted it to be fun - to hear, to play - in spite of the prickling anxiety throughout the lyrics, the fear of change and struggle to cope.

Malian guitar hero Bounaly (the stage name of Ali "Bounaly" Traore) makes his full-length debut with Dimanche à Bamako ("Sunday in Bamako"). Recorded live on location, the music on Dimanche à Bamako is a mix of regional favorites, traditional standards, and originals. Long songs with looping rhythms, pounding kick, and electric shredding guitar, punctuated by shout outs to the guests of honor. A raw and frenetic take on Northern Mali desert sound, playing for the diaspora at a Bamako wedding.

Tina Brooks – True Blue [Reissue/1960] LP (Blue Note)

In addition to appearing as a sideman on dates led by Kenny Burrell, Freddie Hubbard, and Jackie McLean, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks recorded several of his own Blue Note sessions as a leader between 1958-61. However, only one would be released during Brooks' too-brief lifetime, the hard bop masterpiece True Blue. A jewel of the Blue Note catalog, the album was recorded in June 1960 just one week after Brooks appeared on Hubbard's own Blue Note debut Open Sesame. Once again Brooks and Hubbard joined forces on the frontline with Duke Jordan on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. [This title shipped late and will arrive next week.]

David Byrne – Live From Austin TX [Reissue/2017] 2xLP (New West)

Clear splatter vinyl. This show, captured on November 28, 2001, came on the heels of his hit single, “Like Humans Do” and the release of the album Look Into The Eyeball, which was another typically eclectic musical stew reflecting a variety of styles and influences, from Philly soul to a D.C. Go-Go inspired groove and his first-ever Spanish composition, “Desconocido Soy.” Critics at the time called it his best work in years, and his performance on the Austin City Limits stage shows why.

The Chills reissue their celebrated early singles compilation, this 24-track expanded version of Kaleidoscope World gathers together tracks from the Dunedin Double compilation, live recordings, “Doledrums” single and the band’s seminal “Pink Frost”. The collection also contains The Lost EP, with early takes on their groundbreaking Submarine Bells album, alongside the aching “I Love My Leather Jacket”, perfectly illustrating the rollercoaster ride of Martin Phillipps and The Chills as portrayed in the award film The Triumph And The Tragedy Of Martin Phillipps. “Singer/guitarist Martin Phillipps’ group was at the forefront of the extraordinary little guitar-pop scene in New Zealand in the early ’80s. Kaleidoscope World is the major document of their early era.” - Pitchfork

The Counts – What’s Up Front That-Counts CD/LP (Org Music)

In 1971, after dropping "Fabulous" from their moniker, The Counts delivered their first full-length platter for Westbound Records. The conga-led grooves, impassioned vocals and strutting in-the-pocket arrangements are as infectious as they are groovy. The release of this funk classic marks the second installment in Org Music's Westbound Records reissue series, complete with three previously unissued tracks. [Limited edition purple vinyl.]

Fred Davis – Cleveland Blues CD/LP (Remined)

“Fred really COULD sing like J.B. Lenoir and play like T-Bone Walker. He really DID have his own style. And that style had now been passed on to me. Without even realizing it, I had learned to play like Fred Davis. Even now, when I sit down to play the guitar or write a song and I wrap my thumb around the neck, I'm playing like he did. With this music now professionally transferred and remastered, I can only hope that Fred Davis can finally receive the acclaim that he deserves; that he never received in his lifetime. The legend can finally go behind the confines of my living room and, with any luck, to the whole world." – Eli Paperboy Reed, Fall 2022

" - Allmusic.

Duster – Remote Echoes CD/LP/Cassette (Numero)

Culled from half a decade of home four-tracking, Remote Echoes is a hissy, crumbly, and ungrounded expression of Clay Parton and Canaan Amber's ongoing Duster project. A mix of cassette only demos released under the banners Christmas Dust and On The Dodge, this 14 track album also includes a bevy of previously unissued stragglers. Duster's unique blend of fuzzy guitars, bargain synths, muffled percussion, and hushed vocals anticipated chillwave, mumblecore, and corecore, elegantly illustrating the holy trinity of slacker vices: cigarettes, coffee, and the weed supreme. [Limited edition clear w/ sea blue & ruby splatter vinyl.]

Andrzej Korzynski - Possession original score LP (Finders Keepers)

Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski's complete electro/orchestral/experimental score for Andrzej Zulawski's surrealist '80s horror classic Possession. These 25 cues were written and recorded exclusively for the 1981 award-winning film starring Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neil, but due to the progressive, stark and modernist nature of the finished film, less than half of them made it onto the actual director's cut. The intended Possession score in its entirety marks an important axis in Korzynski's career where his various musical disciplines overlap. In one respect, it marks his first forays into to synth driven electronics and disco drum machines, while other tracks epitomize the well-honed techniques used in previous Zulawski scores, such as Third Part Of The Night and The Devil, which rely on his inimitable orchestral arrangements and combination of clavinet, Rhodes, piano and electric guitar. Duplicated and carefully remastered directly from Korzynski's original master tapes, this album boasts the uninhibited studio experiments and retains the pre-cut ambience.

The Rapture – Echoes [Reissue/2003] LP (DFA)

The Rapture's Echoes was and is a clear-eyed kick in the teeth, a band at the peak of their powers and producers with an ambitious vision making. The whole "indie crowd finally learns to dance" narrative is overwrought and irrelevant in 2023 - perhaps context is no longer king - but what remains clear is that this album, made by a San Diego punk band who had moved to New York via Seattle, and produced by the DFA in their own studio, where time and gear and ideas both good and bad were aplenty, maintains an energy and search for catharsis that could bulldoze even the most uptight. For whatever reason, it's remained out-of-print on vinyl since its initial run. And now, with minimal pageantry, it's back. Recut by Bob Weston, loud and clear.

Scritti Politti – White Bread, Black Beer [Reissue/2006] LP (Rough Trade US)

Fittingly, for the release of White Bread, Black Beer, which was a beautiful expression of the creative energy Gartside had sustained over two decades at that point, Scritti Politti returned to Rough Trade for the first time since the mid-1980s. Humbly described by Green on release as "an album of me playing around in the back room... just me alone at home", White Bread, Black Beer was universally acclaimed. Described as "a return to the top" by The Guardian, "the best record of this restlessly self-critical career" by Uncut and "a sophisticated, gloriously gentle thing" by Pitchfork, the record was duly nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize (and was only pipped by Arctic Monkeys' debut).

Secret Sisters – You Don’t Own Me Anymore [Reissue/2017] LP (New West)

Wayne Shorter – Night Dreamer [Reissue/1964] LP (Blue Note)

1964 was a pivotal year in the musical life of Wayne Shorter. Early in the year, the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, appearing on classic Blue Note albums like Free For All and Indestructible. That summer he would join the Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a lineup that became one of the seminal bands in jazz history. But before that he stepped out confidently as a Blue Note artist when he entered Van Gelder Studio in April to record his masterful label debut as a leader, Night Dreamer. The sublime six-song set signaled the arrival of one of the most important new voices in jazz, a visionary composer and thrilling improviser with a wholly distinctive sound.

Susan Tedeschi – Live From Austin TX [Reissue/2012] 2xLP (New West)

Purple colorway. Susan is the essence of what Austin City Limits is all about. Obviously she draws from the best of blues, rock, soul and funk, but what she does best comes from deep within her heart and soul. You'd never know it if you ran into her on the street, but once she gets up on that stage with her band and a guitar in hand, she can burn down the house! It takes a lot of courage to take a classic like Dylan's "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" and breathe new life into it, but Susan has a way of putting her own stamp on everything she does.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – II – 10 Year Anniversary Expanded Edition 2xLP (Jagjaguwar)

Unknown Mortal Orchestra came to life in basements and bedrooms, the musical vision of Portlander-via-New Zealand Ruban Nielson that fused guitar-god riffs, choppy percussion, soul and funk. II, the sophomore album from UMO, emerged in an era rampant hedonism and isolationism and became the blueprint for everything Nielson has become renowned for. It was, and is, the solidification of Unknown Mortal Orchestra as an endlessly intriguing, brave and addictive band. Ten years on, 2013’s II is back with an expanded edition. Written during a punishing, debauched touring schedule during which Nielson feared for both his sanity and health, II illustrates the emotional turmoil of life on the road, painting surrealist, cartoonish portraits of loneliness, love and despair.
