Greetings From Grimey's - Week of March 24th

Let's talk Record Store Day. You know, that glorious day where we celebrate all things great and holy about the culture of record stores, especially independent record stores. It's kind of our thing. This year the big day goes down on Saturday, April 18th, and we'll be celebrating in our usual style - throwing the biggest dang party we can muster!

We've ordered up on all the releases, peep the list here and check out RecordStoreDay.com for more info on the releases and a downloadable pdf. There are over 450 titles, almost all of them on vinyl, and we'll have as many as we can get. Personally I'm jazzed about the Sly & The Family Stone Live at Fillmore East '68, St Paul & The Broken Bones Live From the Alabama Theatre, The Tomorrow LP reissue, Trojan Records Rude Boy Rumble (curated by man Papa Ray from Vintage Vinyl), the Kinks & Shocking Blue 7"s, Jerry Garcia's 2nd solo LP and The Grateful Dead set, the Basement Tapes bootleg, the Lord Sitar (I freakin' love groovy sitar records), the Replacements "Alex Chilton" 10" and the Justin Townes Earle live at Grimey's 10" (natch). But that's just me. I'm old so I mostly like the old stuff. There's plenty of tight new music and across every genre so check out the list and make plans to join us for Record Store Day!

But Record Store Day is about more than just selling records. It's about the community that coalesces around these vibrant pop culture emporiums. Tastes are shared, neophytes are mentored, bands are formed, life-long friends are made, all around a shared passion for music, both on record and in live performance. So in addition to a store packed with amazing recordings, we also put on an all-day concert in the back lot of Grimey's and The Basement. This year we have one of the best lineups ever, in my opinion.

I'm ready to announce that performing at Grimey's for Record Store Day this year are Halestorm, Self, Turbo Fruits, Those Darlins, Kitty Daisy & Lewis, The Lees Of Memory and two more special acts to be announced! Also joining us for the afternoon are Jonathan Jackson and his brother Richard, also known as the band Enation. You may also know Jonathan as the actor who plays Avery on the Nashville TV series on ABC. They'll be here at 2pm and will hang out for a few hours helping MC the event and I'm sure we can get them to do a couple of songs for us while they're here.

We're still working on the food trucks and DJs to spin between bands. We're also putting together a nice selection of craft brews and hopefully will have something from Dogfish Head, who are the official RSD beer sponsor this year. We'll definitely have the poster they designed and the record they curated. I'll have more details for you, including set times for our live performers, in the next couple of weeks but go ahead and make your plans to join us at Grimey's on Record Store Day this year, Saturday, April 18th.

If you still haven't made plans this weekend but are a fan of music that is all over the map, and often left-of-center, consider making a trip to Knoxville for the Big Ears Festival. This year's line up includes Kronos Quartet, Nels Cline, Laurie Anderson, William Tyler, Max Richter, tUnE-yArDs,Grouper, Harold Budd, Ben Frost, Ryley Walker, Terry Riley, Bad Plus, Steve Gunn, Clark, Jamie XX, Rhiannon Giddens, Bill Frisell and, Silver Apples (!), In addition to those exciting, challenging artists and many more, Coupler, fronted by Grimey's staffer Ryan Norris (Lambchop, Hands Off Cuba, Character) and flanked by his co-workers Rollum Haas (The Features, The Privates) and Rodrigo Avendano (Bows & Arrows). performs on Saturday, March 28th at 4:15 at The Standard. Don't miss out!
