Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

Aesop Rock – Integrated Tech Solutions CD/LP (Rhymesayers)

On Integrated Tech Solutions—a concept album about an organization offering “lifestyle - and industry-specific applications designed to curate a desired multi-experience”—Aesop Rock wields insidious corporate-speak as a tool to pry the parasitic business culture away from the parts of life that truly matter, while picking apart the charlatan language. On “Mindful Solutionism”, as the wheel evolves seamlessly into modern agriculture—and then into atomic bombs, cigarettes, and surveillance cameras, Aes sums the spiral up in just a few words: “We cannot be trusted with the stuff that we come up with.” The album sounds like the past and future at once. [Limited-edition white vinyl.]

AJR – The Maybe Man CD/LP (Republic)

New full-length album by the indie-pop sibling trio. The three brothers born and raised in New York City – have achieved a startling level of success in a short period of time. From the success of their buoyant electro-pop single "I'm Ready" to runaway smash "Weak," AJR is making a splash. Raised on the vinyl of the ‘50s and ‘60s, AJR was initially inspired by the likes of The Beach Boys and Frankie Valli, but the sound they've created has been favorably compared to a modern mix of those classic sounds, with flavors of Imagine Dragons, fun., and even some hip-hop production elements pointing towards Kanye West. [Indie store exclusive ‘iridescent pearlized’ purple vinyl.]

Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff – Magg Tekki LP (Mississippi)

Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff is a sprawling drum collective tearing up Dakar's nightlife scene. Senegalese poet Djiby Ly (Wau Wau Collectif) is backed by 14 different percussive instruments plus horns, winds, marimbas, and the occasional accordion, bringing Count Ossie's spiritually elevated polyrhythms back home to Fela Kuti's orchestra.

Baby Queen – Quarter Life Crisis CD/LP (Island)

Featuring 12 tracks, including the previously released singles “Dream Girl” and “We Can Be Anything”, Quarter Life Crisis was produced by long-time collaborator, King Ed. There’s a Matt Healy, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX-esque quality to Baby Queen’s thoughtful songwriting. Baby Queen is a deeply personal project for Bella, born out of feeling like a misfit as she tried to fit into London life, pulled into a vacuum of fashion parties and Instagram influencers. Exposure to a world of fake personalities and self-obsession brought her back to her first passion and she felt compelled to write songs about her experiences. [Limited-edition clear purple marble vinyl pressing with alternate cover art.]

Bear’s Den – First Loves & White Magnolias CD/LP (Communion)

After an incredibly prolific 2022, which saw them release their highly-praised fourth studio album 'Blue Hours' in May, and their original soundtrack for the Apple TV+ series Trying, on which they collaborated with the likes of Maisie Peters and Jade Bird, folk-pop duo Bear's Den return once again to release a pair of new EPs. [Limited-edition yellow vinyl.]

Beirut – Hadsel CD/LP (Pompeii)

Hadsel is the first new full-length record since Beirut’s 2019 release, Gallipoli. Recorded in the Norwegian island of Hadsel shortly after a physical and mental break forced Condon to cancel his 2019 tour, Condon was looking for a place to recover after being left in a state of shock and self-doubt. Working in isolation, Condon explains, “I was lost in a trance, stumbling blindly through my own mental collapse that I had been pushing aside since I was a teenager. It came and rang me like a bell. I was left agonizing over many things past and present while the beauty of nature, the northern lights and fearsome storms played an awesome show around me. The few hours of light would expose the unfathomable be auty of the mountains and the fjords, and the hours - long twilights would fill me with subdued excitement. I’d like to believe that scenery is somehow present in the music.” The resulting is a collection of songs beautifully reflecting that vulnerability, sense of self-determination and belief that after collapse, one can learn to manage on their own again. [Indie store exclusive ‘ice breaker’ white vinyl.]

Brandy – Christmas With Brandy CD (Motown)

A generational talent who is revered by her peers and fans alike, Brandy brings her wisdom and experience to her new holiday album, Christmas With Brandy. A thoughtful, mixed gift bag, the album features Brandy singing original material and bringing new life to classic holiday standards. When she's not dazzling listeners with a crystalline cover, Brandy is diving deep into the R&B bag that made us fall in love with her from the very beginning. [A limited-edition red color vinyl version due December 1.]

Colbie Caillat – Along The Way LP (BFD)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Along The Way is the seventh studio album by singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. It marks her first solo album in seven years since the release of Malibu Sessions (2016). [Indie store exclusive teal vinyl.]

The legendary Cave In perform a ferocious live set at BBC Studios in Maida Vale. The session was recorded on October 24, 2022, on The Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. Carter, and features tracks from their critically acclaimed album, Heavy Pendulum.

Zooey Celeste – Restless Thoughts LP (ATO)

Restless Thoughts, the full-length debut from Zooey Celeste was produced in Brooklyn by Nick Hakim. Centered on Zooey's hypnotic baritone vocals and set against a backdrop of sparse drum-machine beats and droney guitar tones, the album drifts between avant-punk, chamber-pop and lo-fi psychedelia, drawing the listener into a sustained dream state. Colombian Canadian singer/songwriter Tei Shi (aka Valerie Teicher Barbosa) joins Zooey on "Big Trouble" for a sublime piece of surrealist dance-pop. [Limited edition turquoise vinyl.]

Daneshevskaya – Long Is The Tunnel 12”/Cassette (Winspear)

Daneshevskaya - the creative alias of Brooklyn musician Anna Beckerman - is an ode to the singer's Lithuanian familial roots, and while her music can be delicate and dreamy, it's underpinned by a sense of great ambition. Long Is The Tunnel features notable contributions from Lewis Evans of Black Country, New Road, and production work by members of the critically-praised art-rock band Model/Actriz. Over the course of the seven-track project, Daneshevskaya shares standout tracks like the delicately disorienting "Big Bird" and "Somewhere In The Middle" - an oblique folk/rock track with compelling dynamic shifts. [Indie store exclusive blood red vinyl.]

Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country – Reflector LP (Retrace)

When people first meet Daniel Donato, they’re not fully braced for this walking tornado of creative energy. “They think there’s something that tips the scale in ways they don’t understand,” says Donato about his over-the-top, slightly manic vibe. “But what actually tips the scale is the amount of thought and analysis I put into my work and art, all of which is taken from the lessons of my life.” Reflector's 15 songs offer 66 minutes of ecstatic musical immersion. It's an album in the classic sense of the word, tracks that are individually memorable but sound even better coming one after the other and make the sum greater than the total of its parts. ''We're touching on a lot with this record, which is also why there's so many songs on it,'' acknowledges Donato, whose stinging Fender Telecaster tone is the strongest glue of continuity throughout. ''If you're the kind of person who wants to listen to a record and have a record be a companion with you, then Reflector is going to vibrate in your frequency.'' [Indie store exclusive blue vinyl. All copies at Grimey’s are signed by Daniel and available for in-store purchase only.]

Dos Senoritas – Classic Banjo Duets LP (Deko Music)

Champion fiddler Aaron Jonah Lewis has been elbow-deep in traditional American fiddle and banjo music since their first lessons at the age of five with Kentucky native Robert Oppelt. Lewis has taken blue ribbons at the Appalachian String Band Festival in Clifftop, WV, and at the Old Fiddlers Convention in Galax, VA, the oldest and largest fiddlers convention in the country. This may be the first collection of exclusively classic banjo duets ever recorded, including three pieces by the Mozart of the Banjo himself, Joe Morley, two by another great UK banjo composer, Emile Grimshaw, and a monstrous Grand Polka de Concert by composer, Paul Eno, entitled “Cupid's Arrow”.

Vincent Neil Emerson – The Golden Crystal Kingdom LP (RCA)

The Golden Crystal Kingdom is the new album from Texas troubadour and singer-songwriter Vincent Neil Emerson. This 12-track collection is produced by Shooter Jennings and expands the artist's repertoire into classic rock and ‘70s AM territory, tapping into the storied sounds of legends like Neil Young and Tom Petty. [Indie store exclusive gold color vinyl.]

Art Feynman – Be Good The Crazy Boys LP (Western Vinyl)

Until now, Art Feynman - the eccentric alter ego of accomplished producer Luke Temple - has strictly been a solo act, a way for the artist to explore surprising sonic landscapes without the burdens of identity. Slightly twisted takes on Kosmische musik, worldbeat, and art pop can all be found scattered across the Art Feynman discography, but with his new album Be Good The Crazy Boys, Feynman fully immerses himself into pools of collective madness. [Limited edition leaf green vinyl.]

Michael Franti & Spearhead – Big Big Love CD (Boo Boo Wax)

Michael Franti is a globally recognized musician, humanitarian, activist, and award-winning filmmaker revered for his high-energy live shows, inspiring music, devotion to health and wellness, worldwide philanthropic efforts and the power of optimism. Michael Franti & Spearhead continue to foster their community both on and off stage with a wish granting non-profit, Do It For The Love, founded by Franti and his wife, Sara. Do It For The Love brings those with life threatening illnesses, veterans, and children with severe challenges to concerts worldwide, fulfilling over 3,300 wishes and touching the lives of over 12,000 people to date.

Sam Gendel – Audiobook LP/Cassette (Psychic Hotline)

Audiobook, the new project from multi-instrumentalist Sam Gendel and visual artist/filmmaker Marcella Cytrynowicz, consists of 13 tracks in conversation with 26 corresponding illustrations. Both a visual work and instrumental album whose vivid colors are woven into a soundscape that could be a ‘90s sci-fi soundtrack.

Goat – Medicine LP (Rocket Recordings)

It is hard to know how many times the mythology and mystery of Goat's backstory can be written about, but new release Medicine does away with any need to dwell on the past, returning with a more introspective, slightly mellower psych-folk sound that remains recognizably them. There is a consistently restrained, warm feel across the whole work, and the band suggest that the overall theme of the album is about "the impermanence of life in different ways: sickness, relationships, love, death and how our time is finite." At times the album's sound has nods to classic Swedish ‘70s psych/prog/folk acts such as Arbete & Fritid, Charlie & Esdor and Träd, Gräs & Stenar. [Limited edition ‘wavy cap’ color vinyl.]

Helmet – Left LP (earMUSIC)

Helmet, the iconic alternative metal band from New York that has left an indelible mark on the scene and shaped generations of rock artists, returns with Left, the first album in seven years. "Holiday" is the first single from this album, which can rightly be called the most elegant and articulate sonic assault of the year. [Indie store exclusive clear vinyl.]

Kevin Morby – More Photographs (A Continuum) LP (Dead Oceans)

Kevin Morby writes (and records, and imagines) at an almost incomparable clip, and his most recent album, This Is A Photograph, studies life, time and mortality through myriad lenses. It's a dynamic, buoyant record on big, heavy themes, so it only makes sense that Morby found he wasn't quite done with it on it's completion. More Photographs (A Continuum) finds new nooks, corners, and vantage points. "If This Is A Photograph is a house that you have been living inside of," says Morby, "then More Photographs is, perhaps, the same home just experienced differently. As if you, its inhabitant, have taken a tab of something psychedelic and now, suddenly, you've replaced your eyeglasses with kaleidoscopes." Here, Morby returns to his landmark album's bottomless themes with new wisdom, new imagination, and the winking, looping callbacks that tie his full body of work together in uniquely special ways. [Limited-edition Coke bottle clear vinyl.]

David Morris – Bored In The USA CD (Grey Area)

David Morris has a gift for fusing traditional country music with modern pop and hip-hop, to create an entirely unique vehicle for storytelling. Bored In The USA tells stories that reflect the realities of living in a small town in Appalachia in a raw and honest way. Featuring hit singles "Dutton Ranch Freestyle" and "Carrying Your Love", Morris has created a well-rounded album that offers both celebration and reflection.

The Native Cats – The Way On Is The Way Off LP (Chapter Music)

Spiritual forebears to the current wave of speak-singing post-punk a la Dry Cleaning and Sleaford Mods, The Native Cats have grown a sizeable cult following from their home in Tasmania (Australia's remote and chilly island state) since the late 2000s. Their minimal bass and drums rumble is offset by Chloe's lyrics which twist, confound and linger.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – King Of Cowards LP (Rocket Recordings)

Limited splatter color vinyl pressing. Seven is the magic number. Indeed, not only do psychologists theorize that the human brain can only memorize a sequence of this length, but Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - the Newcastle-based maximalists whose riffs, raw power and rancor have blazed a trail across the darker quarters of the underground in the last five years - have made a second album in King Of Cowards which does its damnedest to take consciousness to its very limits.

PinkPantheress – Heaven Knows CD/LP (300 Entertainment)

Debut album by English musician PinkPantheress (real name Victoria Beverley Walker). Heaven Knows is the follow-up to her 2021 mixtape To Hell With It and includes the singles "Boy's A Liar Pt. 2" (with Ice Spice), "Mosquito", and "Capable Of Love". The album reveals PinkPantheress' inner self-reflection as she explores various types of relationships, including romantic, parasocial, materialistic pursuits, grief, and finding contentment within loneliness. "The record is about grief for a loss but being at peace with yourself in your aloneness. Journeying from hell into purgatory, but I'm ok with being there."

Sunwatchers – Music Is Victory Over Time CD/LP (Trouble In Mind)

In the decade or so that hard-working New York quartet Sunwatchers has operated, the group has steadily and subtly refined their sound - a brain-blasting mixture of jazz, psychedelia, krautrock, punk, noise, and Saharan blues - into something that is avant-leaning enough to appeal to the discerning jazz and experimental music fan and weird and wooly enough to get the true heads' toes tapping. Music Is Victory Over Time is the band's fifth album, seeing the long-running lineup of Peter Kerlin (bass guitar), Jim McHugh (guitars), Jason Robira (drums), and Jeff Tobias (alto saxophone and keyboards) in prime form. [Limited-edition ‘Kool-Aid sunflar’ color vinyl.]

The Third Mind – 2 2xLP (Yep Roc)

The psychedelic trip continues with covers of "Sally Go Round The Roses", "Groovin' is Easy", "Why Not Your Baby", and more. The six-song set includes one original, "Tall Grass", and runs the length of three LP sides. The fourth side of the LP includes an etching of the Third Mind mandala by Tony Fitzpatrick. The album cover includes artwork from Lou Beach.

Youth Fountain – Together In Lonesome CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Since forming Youth Fountain in 2017, the Vancouver BC-based Tyler Zanon has been a prolific writer, ascending on the shoulders of a cutting, introspective sound Kerrang hailed as “so raw and young that one can't help but wonder if [Youth Fountain] were peers of Taking Back Sunday and Saves The Day back in the early 2000s.” As he revisited lyric notebooks and hard drives from Youth Fountain early days and previous bands, Zanon amassed a collection of demos he brought to producer Anton DeLost (State Champs, Mayday Parade). Together, the pair worked to transform them into Together In Lonesome standouts – like the skate-punk pit-starting “Clarity”, angular “A Few Notes For Orpheus”, and skyscraping “Twin Flame” – while crafting songs like “Identical Days” and first single “Fallen Short”, the anthemic encapsulation of Youth Fountain’s unbridled, nostalgic blend of emo, pop-punk, and alternative rock, from the ground up. [Indie store exclusive ‘swamp green’ vinyl.]

Bright Eyes – A Christmas Album [Reissue/2002] LP (Dead Oceans)

Bright Eyes' A Christmas Album begins with a piano, flute, ambient noise, and musical saw-driven version of "Away In A Manger", helping weed out casual Christmas music enjoyers, but all too tempting for the most devout of Conor Oberst's disciples, who originally learned that the warmth of the holiday season is trumped only by it's potential for melancholy back in 2002 with the original Saddle Creek release. Held at the Manchester FreeTrade Hall in May 1966—but long known as the Royal Albert Hall Concert due to a mislabeled bootleg—the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock ‘n’ roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Todd Snider – Crank It, We’re Doomed CD/2xLP (Aimless)

Todd Snider was amid one of the most creative periods of his career when he recorded Crank It, We’re Doomed in 2007. He was writing at a frenetic pace and experimenting with musical ideas he would develop more fully on later releases. He not only finished and recorded the 15 songs on Crank It that year, but he also wrote and recorded the seven songs that appeared on Shit Sandwich, the digital-only EP released in 2010 by his alter ego Elmo Buzz & The Eastside Bulldogs. The tracks on Shit Sandwich made up the bulk of Snider’s 2016 full-length release, Eastside Bulldog. At some point after Snider decided to put Crank It, We’re Doomed on the shelf, the stereo masters were lost. Over the years, both Snider and McCullough made efforts to locate the masters with no luck. The subject came up again recently when they met to discuss making another record together. After hearing the record for the first time in more than a decade, Snider was no longer bothered by it being “all over the map.” So he shared it with a few friends and advisors, who recognized its historical importance and encouraged him to release it. Various Artists - Nashville Gold LP (Omni Recording Corporation)

Subtitled “Hayseed Delirium from the Boob Tube Golden Age 1956-1975” and brought to you by the same people who brought you the “Hillbillies In Hell” series. In the late 1960s, Nashville prime time television was dominated by country music. Viewers were treated to the lysergic hayseed-isms of THE PORTER WAGONER SHOW, the pastel psychedelia of THOSE SINGIN' SWINGIN' STOMPIN' SENSATIONAL STONEMANS, and the beer and laxative commercials that erupted in between It was possible to channel surf between the multitude of country stars. Snake oil and lube. Primate and convict. While hick salesmen peddled their wares, hillbillies sang laments of heartbreak and tax slave revolt, saloon booze ups and death row f***ups. This disc can be played in lip-sync (with standardized applause) or live in the studio to hear some of your favorite country music stars of yesteryear, broadcast from Music City U.S.A.
