Hitting The Racks

Here's your weekly rundown of what's hitting the new release racks at Grimey's

New Releases

The Aces – I’ve Loved You For So Long LP (Red Bull)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl (including an indie store exclusive smoke color vinyl pressing). In the years since The Aces released their acclaimed sophomore album, Under My Influence in 2020, the band has been on a journey of self-discovery. Faced with the realities of a global pandemic, sisters Cristal and Alisa Ramirez (lead vocals/guitar and drums, respectively), Katie Henderson (lead guitar/vocals), and McKenna Petty (bass) used quarantine as a time to reflect, confronting personal mental health issues as well as processing experiences they'd had growing up together in Provo, Utah, as part of the Mormon church. When The Aces returned to the studio, their vision - and the honesty and trust between them - felt stronger than ever. The result of this growth period is I've Loved You For So Long, the band's third LP. Written and executive-produced by the group (along with Keith Varon, the sole collaborator on the project), the album is a sparkling indie-rock record that's by far their most personal and self-assured work to date.

Nicolas Allbrook – Manganese LP (Spinning Top)

Orange color vinyl pressing. Nicholas Allbrook is a Western Australian native and a highly accomplished Australian songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, painter and producer. Since the beginning of his artistic career in 2005, Allbrook has brought community and collaboration to the forefront of his artistic method.

The Baseball Project – Grand Salami Time! CD/2xLP (Omnivore)

Fourth release featuring Scott McCaughey (The Minus 5/Young Fresh Fellows), Steve Wynn (The Dream Syndicate), Peter Buck and Mike Mills (R.E.M.) and Linda Pitmon (Filthy Friends). All in all, a fancy pedigree but, as Wynn points out, “this is our only band that plays stadiums”—true story as The Baseball Project has performed full sets along with the National Anthem and “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” at major league parks in Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee, Denver, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and more minor league and spring training fields, as well as having thrown out some exceptional first pitches (nothing but strikes!) as well. Grand Salami Time! was recorded at Mitch Easter’s fabled Fidelitorium Studios in Kernersville, North Carolina, with the entire band performing live together in the same room, a joyous experience that seemed impossible to imagine only one year before. Mitch adds guitar on a few tracks and the record also features appearances by Stephen McCarthy (The Long Ryders) and Steve Berlin (Los Lobos).

Body Of Light – Bitter Reflection LP (Dais)

The latest by Arizona desert brotherhood Alex and Andrew Jarson aka Body of Light further hones their smoldering strain of tempestuous synth-pop into a transformative suite of anthems, reveries, and reckonings. Sampled snippets of voice, noise, synth, and field recordings flicker in the periphery of these 11 tracks, murmuring like nostalgia half-forgotten, or displaced memories. Its music pulled between twin flames of truth and desire, romanticization and reality, catharsis, and control, born of a bond sealed by years, dreams, and blood. [Indie store exclusive translucent light blue vinyl.]

Grian Chatten – Chaos For The Fly CD/LP (Partisan)

Chaos For The Fly is the debut solo album from Grian Chatten, vocalist of Dublin's critically-acclaimed band Fontaines D.C. Rare moments of respite from a relentless touring schedule afforded Chatten the opportunity to start work on something for himself, occupying a completely different headspace from his hugely successful work within Fontaines D.C. Co-produced by the band's longstanding producer Dan Carey, the album is arguably the most poetic from Chatten. Each song has a sweep of color and texture that breathes life into his lucid tales. Over its nine tracks, Chaos For The Fly is a record that takes in all of life's rich emotions, transporting the listener to a place you not only want to visit, but will find yourself returning to again and again. [Limited-edition white vinyl.]

Angelo de Augustine – Toil And Trouble CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)

Toil And Trouble, the fourth solo album from Angelo de Augustine, exists according to its own quixotic logic, inhabiting a psychic landscape as mystifying as a fever dream or fairy tale. The Southern California-based artist spent nearly three years working alone and exploring the expanse of his imagination. [Limited-edition gold vinyl.]

Elina Duni, Rob Luft, Fred Thomas, Matthieu Michel – A Time To Remember CD (ECM)

A Time To Remember is a continuation of the special synergy that inhabited Elina Duni's acclaimed Lost Ships and finds her regrouping with that album's quartet of guitarist Rob Luft, Matthieu Michel on flugelhorn and Fred Thomas on percussion and piano. The notion of 'time' pulls through the program like a theme, connecting music from different parts of the world - traditionals, popular songs and original compositions - in performances of deep lyricism but also fleet-footed folklore.

The Heavy – Amen LP+MP3 (Bad Son Recording Co.)

The Heavy return with their sixth album, Amen; an exhilarating maelstrom of ‘60s R&B riffs, horns, and gospel harmonies.

Kieran Hebden/William Tyler – Darkness, Darkness / No Services 12” (Psychic Hotline)

The Japanese House – In The End It Always Does CD/LP (Dirty Hit)

Critically acclaimed artist The Japanese House has announced details of her long-awaited sophomore album, In The End It Always Does. Featuring the recent single "Boyhood", much of the album lives in the contradictory: beginnings and endings, obsession, and mundanity, falling in love and falling apart. Four years after her widely celebrated debut, Good At Falling, this album sees Amber Bain lean even further into the pop realm whilst elevating her signature sound. [Limited-edition blue vinyl.]

Kesha – Gag Order LP (RCA)

Now available on vinyl. Gag Order finds the Grammy-nominated pop star Kesha excavating the deepest recesses of her soul. The record, which Kesha has labeled "post-pop" and was produced by Rick Rubin, is a full-bodied collection that flows like a stream of conscious journey through the psychedelic dark depths of the human psyche followed by basking in the cleansing light when finally reaching the surface.

Khanate – To Be Cruel LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)

The highly influential avant-garde supergroup Khanate return with their first new album in 14 years, taking their signature improvisational doom to new levels of sadistic extreme. Khanate are Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Burning Witch and Thorr's Hammer), James Plotkin and Alan Dubin (OLD) and Tim Wyskida (Blind Idiot God, Manbyrd). [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

John Carroll Kirby – Blowout 2xLP (Stones Throw)

John Carroll Kirby is a Grammy Award-nominated producer, composer, and keyboardist from Los Angeles. Blowout was inspired by the local people, music, and nature of Costa Rica.

Acantha Lang – Beautiful Dreams CD/LP (Magnolia Blue)

With Acantha's takes on Stax-inspired funk with Southern blues, she tells highly personal tales atop spirited, shimmering grooves. Acantha's storytelling style harkens to age-old blues traditions while grounding itself in contemporary themes, delivering head-on lyrical attacks on fake news (the tell-all "He Said/She Said"), odes to motherly love in the wake of Katrina's disaster (the gripping "Lois Lang"), and celebrations of Black strength and womanhood with confidence and pride.

Loma Prieta – Last LP (Deathwish Inc.)

Loma Prieta is a punk band from San Francisco, CA. Last is comprised of eleven songs which took shape amid the turbulence the world has collectively faced over the last number of years. The emotional tension within each is palatable. At times, unfurling contemplatively with delicate melody while at others, exploding with sonic violence. [Indie store exclusive black w/ white vinyl.]

[Indie store exclusive ‘radioactive’ green vinyl.]

The Pink Stones – You Know Who CD/LP (Normaltown)

You Know Who is the sophomore album from Athens, GA's own, The Pink Stones. Created In the heart of Athens, GA with their trusty producer, Henry Barbe (Deerhunter, Drive By Truckers) You Know Who is an 11-song record that pushes the boundaries of modern country and rock 'n' roll music. The Pink Stones sound takes influence from recordings of George and Tammy, as well as J.J. Cale's self-produced Tulsa sound. The record is also just as inspired by the windy city cuts of Curtis Mayfield, all styles that cover the band's sound in cigarette smoke and whiskey spills. The six-piece band has utilized their performing chops to make a tight but soulful album with featured guests such as Nikki Lane, Jack Quiggins and Ryan Jennings (Teddy & The Rough Riders), John James Tourville (Deslondes), and Annie Leeth (Faye Webster). [Indie store exclusive autographed color vinyl.]

Pool Kids – Pool Kids LP (Skeletal Lightning)

Limited-edition green/bone white galaxy color vinyl pressing. Pool Kids are energy. Raw, sporadic, and indisputably authentic, the four piece's latest self-titled album fuses math-rock familiarities with a wave of indie rock angst. The record explores regeneration from trauma, heartbreak, and culture.

The Reds, Pinks, & Purples – The Town That Cursed Your Name LP+MP3 (Slumberland)

Indie store exclusive seaglass blue vinyl. Dedicated "to everyone who ever tried to start a band in the Bay," The Reds, Pinks & Purples' The Town That Cursed Your Name is at once achingly local and heartrendingly universal. Over the last few years, The RPPs' Glenn Donaldson has attracted a lot of attention with his gorgeous, lyrical pop. The Town That Cursed Your Name gathers twelve perfectly constructed pop gems. Everyone from The Go-Betweens to Felt to Magnetic Fields echo through his songs, informed by an extreme dedication to detail and no small amount of outright fandom.

Tyshawn Sorey Trio – Continuing 2xLP (Pi Recordings)

Continuing is Tyshawn Sorey's highly anticipated follow-up to Mesmerism and The Off-Off Broadway Guide To Synergism, his two critically acclaimed 2022 releases that were voted #4 and #5 best albums of the year, respectively, in the annual Francis Davis Jazz Poll of over 150 jazz critics. Continuing features the same musicians as on Mesmerism - Sorey on drums, pianist Aaron Diehl and bassist Matt Brewer - with four long tracks allowing the musicians to explore crevices and possibilities while keeping the emphasis on melody, groove, swing, and the blues.

Steady Hands – Cheap Fiction LP (Lame-O)

Electric blue vinyl. Sean Huber, best known as the drummer of the beloved & defunct band Modern Baseball, has been releasing music with his band Steady Hands since 2013. Back for the first time since 2018 with new album "Cheap Fiction," Huber pays homage to all the deities you'd expect someone with a New Jersey birth certificate and a dog named Bruce to worship, with rollicking saxophone and piano over tales of hard-on-their-luck neighborhoods, and stadium-rock-ready guitar zaps over odes to the misrepresented people of Florida.

Lucinda Williams – Stories From A Rock N Roll Heart CD/LP (Thirty Tigers)

Lucinda Williams' music has gotten her through her darkest days. Over the past two years, it's been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17, 2020, at age 67. Her masterful, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To wit, her stunning, sixteenth studio album, Stories From A Rock N Roll Heart, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever. In addition to Williams' longtime touring guitarist Stuart Mathis, contributors include drummer Steve Ferrone (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers), keyboardist Reese Wynans (the Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble vet who appeared on Essence), bassist Steve Mackey (Dolly Parton), and pedal steel/guitarist Doug Pettibone, who played with Williams earlier in her career. [Indie store exclusive cobalt blue vinyl.]

Mitchum Yacoub – Living High In The Brass Empire LP (All-Town Sound)

A showcase in unique stylings of tropical funk, afrobeat, cumbia, and soul; a musical patchwork threaded by a heavy, hypnotic rhythm section and powerfully vibrant horn lines. [Limited-edition orange vinyl.]

Housed inside book-shelf style slipcase with silver-foil detail.

The Body – I Shall Die Here / Earth Triumphant [Reissue/2014] 2xLP (RVNG Int’l)

On I Shall Die Here, The Body sonically serrates the remains of metal's already unidentifiable corpse and splays it amid tormented voices in shadow. Sharing their heathen vision with The Haxan Cloak, The Body's tried, true, and absorbingly tragic sound is mutilated by process and re-animated in a spectral state. This double-LP set is expanded with the previously unreleased Earth Triumphant, a full-length companion album that would become I Shall Die Here, showcasing The Body's brutality in its most primal form. [Indie store exclusive white vinyl.]

Neko Case – Wild Creatures 2xLP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Wild Creatures pulls together some high points of feral joy from 21 years of solo work by Neko Case. The Virginian marked Neko's debut as a solo artist in 1997. She delved into darkness in 2000 with Furnace Room Lullaby, scrawled Blacklisted in 2004 and recorded The Tigers Have Spoken live the same year. In 2006, she dreamed Fox Confessor Brings The Flood, and in 2009 unleashed Middle Cyclone. She plumbed her own life in 2013 for The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, and raised hell in 2018 with Hell-On. Now in her third decade of recording under her own name, she's just getting started. The career retrospective Wild Creatures contains 23 of Neko's most impactful tracks from her discography as well as the new song "Oh, Shadowless". [Indie store exclusive eco-mix color vinyl.]

Ragnar Johnson – Spirit Cry Flutes & Bamboo Jews Harps from Papua New Guinea: Eastern Highlands And Madang 2xLP (Ideologic Organ)

Sourced by Ragnar Johnson and Jessica Mayer, this recording of a male initiation ceremony with sacred flutes, bullroarers and 'crying baby' leaves was only possible after fifteen months residence during anthropological research. From the same Ommura villages in the Eastern Highlands there are bamboo jews harps, yam fertility flutes and singing. Nama ('bird') sacred flutes were recorded in a Gahuku Gama village in the town of Goroka. There are Mo-mo bamboo resonating tubes and singing from the Finisterre Range of Madang. From the Ramu Coast region of Madang there are: Waudang flutes, garamut slit gongs and singing from Manam Island, Maner flutes from Awar village and Siam and Guna flutes and garamuts from Nubia Sissimungum Village. These previously unreleased recordings were made in 1976 and 1979.

Khruangbin / Nubya Garcia – Live At Radio City Music Hall LP (Dead Oceans)

It's only fitting that Khruangbin's first-ever official live releases would be albums paired with their tourmates: artists whose music they love and admire, friends who've become family along the way. Khruangbin's series of live LPs traces just one small slice of the band's flight plan through the years: it's a taste of some of their most beloved cities, stages, and nights. Each release comes with a limited-edition unique album cover exclusive for the recording's home turf, just a little something extra for the fans that bring a little something extra. Most of all, this series ignites both sides of the band's magic: the warm, prismatic feeling of their albums and the bewitching energy of their performances.

Jim Lauderdale – Wait ‘Til Spring [Reissue/2003] LP (Missing Piece)

20th Anniversary edition. It's difficult to pigeonhole musicians like Jim Lauderdale. He's been called "country," but that seems more of a convenient label than an accurate description of his talent. Lauderdale, after all, recorded an album with Ralph Stanley in 2000, and joined up with Donna The Buffalo in 2003 for Wait 'Til Spring. Country singers, after all, don't make a habit of associating with jam bands (imagine Merle Haggard recording with the Grateful Dead). The combination, however, works remarkably well here. Lauderdale obviously wanted a sonic twist to his homegrown songs, and Donna the Buffalo obliges. The six-piece band, in fact, has a bewildering arsenal of instruments, ranging from fiddle, accordion, electric guitars, an organ, and vocals.

Janelle Monáe – The Electric Lady [Reissue/2013] 2xLP (Atlantic)

Janelle Monáe's The Electric Lady album is pressed on two clear LPs (a one-time pressing). A part of Atlantic Records' 75th Anniversary vinyl collection.

Neu! – Neu! 2 [Reissue/1973] LP (Goenland)

Limited picture disc vinyl pressing. After the considerable success of their self-titled debut album, Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother set out ambitiously to record a follow-up. Virtually everything went wrong. The first of the artistic and personal differences that existed between them not only began to surface, but to flourish in the face of a nearly impossible studio deadline and overly tight budget. While the basic Neu! Sound was not an issue, how to augment it was. Over time, this great big middle finger to the music biz weathered the storm very well. In fact, it now sounds as if it were recorded this way based on aesthetics rather than anger. But at the time it merely showed a duo that had worn each other out and had been dissed by their record company. This is essential Krautrock.

Paris, Texas – Boy Anonymous LP (Paris Texas LLC)

Vinyl reissue of the 2021 debut album from the hip-hop duo.

Portugal. The Man – Evil Friends [Reissue/2013] LP (Atlantic)

10th Anniversary limited edition vinyl features new cover art and a 12”x24” bonus poster designed by The Fantastic The. [Limited edition clear vinyl.]

Queen – Greatest Hits [Reissue/1980] CD (Hollywood)

Greatest Hits is Queen's best-selling album to date, with total sales of over 25 million copies, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. It reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, spending four weeks at the top and sold consistently well throughout the 1980s, becoming the fourth-biggest selling album of the decade. The single "Under Pressure", which was released the same week as Greatest Hits, also topped the UK Singles Chart.

Six Finger Satellite – The Pigeon Is The Most Popular Bird [Reissue/1993] CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)

Formed in 1990 in Providence, Rhode Island by J. Ryan (singer/keyboards), John MacLean (guitar), Peter Phillips (guitar), Chris Dixon (bass), and Rick Pelletier (drums), Six Finger Satellite quickly signed to Sub Pop and released the band's first demo tape as the Weapon EP. Following Weapon, Dixon left the group and was replaced by Kurt Niemand, and the band quickly jumped into making their debut full-length with Bob Weston (of Shellac, who later named a single "The Bird Is the Most Popular Finger" in honor of Six Finger Satellite). Released in 1993, The Pigeon Is The Most Popular Bird was the first release to truly capture the adventurous, biting spirit and sound of Six Finger Satellite. The album is a landmark of noisy, distressing post-punk, drawing influence from Gang Of Four, The Birthday Party, and Wire while adding a healthy dose of the band's own, unique sonic antagonism. [Limited-edition red & blue ‘Loser Edition’ vinyl.]

Something Weird – Greatest Hits 2xLP (Modern Harmonic)

Limited go-go pink colored vinyl pressing. Take an auditory trip through a wacky world of oddball and obscure "classick" exploitation cinema soundtracks from the 1960s and early 1970s, presented by one of the most beloved genre film video companies of all time... Something Weird. Two LPs chock-full of oddities and earworms with great sets of liners and track by track factoids.

Sun Ra and His Interplanetary Vocal Arkestra – The Space Age Is Here To Stay [Reissue/2016] 2xLP (Modern Harmonic)

‘Lunar blue’ color vinyl pressing. Across the history of jazz, there is no wilder, more future-forward composer and performer than Herman Poole Blount, aka Sun Ra. Known as much for his wild on-stage persona as his innovative compositions, Sun Ra was the avant-garde bleeding edge of the jazz genre, introducing modal composition and electronic instrumentation before almost anyone else - not to mention bringing the space age to life with his obsession with all things extraterrestrial. Across more than 100 LPs released in his lifetime, Sun Ra charted a course to space and far, far beyond.

Various Artists – L80s: So Unusual LP (Numero)

The tenth volume of Numero's elaborately packaged Cabinet Of Curiosities series, L80s finds the group exploring the far-flung corners of the global downtempo underground. This 12-song mix tape weaves icy hot coldwave, Sausalito seafood jazz, Glaswegian goth, makeshift Madonna, Sade spoofs, and Brat Pack balearic into a high-waisted, party-ready pair of danceable denim. [Limited-edition red vinyl.]

Various Artists – The Rough Guide To Slide Guitar Blues LP+MP3 (World Music Network)

Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. From the very start, blues guitarists forged an irresistible partnership with the slide, the sound of which epitomizes the very essence of the genre. This Rough Guide highlights the revolutionary players who pioneered this most captivating of styles during the early recorded heyday of the blues.

Volbeat – Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood [Reissue/2008] LP (Mascot)

Glow in the dark color vinyl pressing of the Danish rock band’s third album

Charlie Watts – Anthology 2xCD/2xLP (BMG)

Charlie Watts Anthology is an affectionate retrospective and a reflection of just how frequently Watts was able to exercise his jazz muscles between Rolling Stones commitments to create a bespoke discography of his own. The names of Charlie's jazz heroes fell from his lips like a superfan turning the pages of a personal scrapbook. Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Chico Hamilton, Dave Green, Stan Tracey, Peter King, Courtney Pine, Gail Thompson, Brian Lemon, Gerard Presencer, the Red Rodney group and collaborator Jim Keltner. Anthology includes three unreleased tracks.

Frank Zappa – Funky Nothingness 3xCD/2xLP (Zappa Records)

Funky Nothingness is the "lost album" sequel to the iconic Hot Rats (1969). Primarily recorded at The Record Plant studio in 1970, it contains mostly unreleased compositions and jams featuring Don "Sugarcane" Harris and newcomer Aynsley Dunbar. Titled by Zappa himself, this compilation contains vintage FZ mixes with modern mixes by Craig Parker Adams. The expanded 3xCD set is mastered by John Polito, includes a 28-page booklet and features audio not found on the double LP vinyl edition.
